Run! It's the Pink Tank!

Wed, Nov 19, 2003 at 8:26:04 am PST

Nothing says “thoughtful, committed peace activist” like a pink cardboard tank decorated with skulls, and a frowning little girl sitting inside.

More pictures from the London Moonbat Extravaganza. The giant puppet with the “Hands Off Cuba!” slogan is also a keeper.

The first was "If you think that Blair's a poodle, shout woof woof". However, of the hundred or so people lining this part of the barriers only two joined in with him.

Just for amusement, folks might want to look at the Volokh Conspiracy website today. There is a description of what is really going on in the "massive" protests in the UK. Their person is in Trafalgar today, a couple of hours ago UK time, and says there were never more than a few hundred people at a time in the square, considerably less than were there last week to protest hikes in university fees. Looks like the "massive" protest didn't happen. Not to say it won't later, but it looks like it might turn out to be a bust. Awwwwwww.

OT Hey, they finally found a tv program that Jack Valenti thinks should not have been shown on to the public, "The Men who Killed Kennedy" on the History Channel. He called it "garbage". This from the man who has facilitated tons of real garbage reaching the big screen. So very funny.
The program was actually very good. JFK had many enemies. LBJ was clearly one of them and apparently he did something about it. The list of everyone who participated is very long but clearly it HAD to be in order to organise a major coverup that has lasted forty years. I highly recommend this program to all conspiracty buffs. To those whose minds are closed, just pass on by and save your energy and comments.
LBJ died in disgrace under the care of a psychiatrist for depression. One of the founding liberals of the present, lunatic generation of liberals, he almost bankrupted the country and sent thousands of young men and women to die in a war he didn't have the guts to win. Apparently, he couldn't handle a fight unless he could shoot someone in the back. Coward. What an evil man.

OT: French Chief Rabbi: Don't wear yarmulkes

Worried about a surge in anti-Semitic attacks, France's chief rabbi has cautioned Jewish men against wearing yarmulkes in public, suggesting they wear baseball caps instead.

After a weekend arson attack on a Jewish school, Rabbi Joseph Sitruk urged young men to be extra cautious, saying they could become targets of violence if they wear the yarmulke, or skullcap.

"I ask young Jews to be alert, to avoid walking alone, to avoid wearing the yarmulke in the street or in the subway and consequently becoming targets for potential assailants," Sitruk told Radio J this weekend.

If I wanted to sound jingoistic I could say that after WWII the British should be grateful that the origional americans rebelled successfully against the British monarchy. Halloween is derived from 'Hallowed Eve' a festival of the saints. It's another festival that was lifted by the church from pre-christian beginnings.

You're getting Halloween mixed up with All Saints Day.

Halloween was not originally a festival of saints. It was Samhain (pronounced "sow-in"), the most important festival in the Gaelic world up until relatively recently. It marked the end of the agricultural year and it was also the festival of the ancestors (hence the modern associations with ghosts, etc.) The activities associated with Samhain took place at the hill of Tlachtga, now known as the Hill of Ward in Co. Meath, about 10 miles from Tara, and centered around the ceremonial re-enactment of the death of the god Lugh.

There's a fascinating little book on all this called "Tlachtga: Celtic Fire Festival" by John Gilroy, if you care to educate yourself about your own people's history.

In 1845, the Irish brought Halloween to the U.S. On this “Day to the Dead” – Samhain - Muck Olla, the sun god, was in danger of becoming overpowered by the Grim Reaper. Samhain assembled the dead spirits from the previous year, confined in animals' bodies as punishment for their evil deeds. On October 31st, they were allowed to visit the living.
As protection from them, Druid priests led worship ceremonies in which powerless human beings and animals (especially cats) were burned alive in wicker cages.

Tom Sanguinet, former high priest of Wicca said, "Halloween is purely and absolutely evil, and there is nothing we ever have or will do that would make it acceptable."

A little knowledge will do you more harm than good Ann.

By the 800s, the influence of Christianity had spread into Celtic lands. In the seventh century, Pope Boniface IV designated November 1 All Saints' Day, a time to honor saints and martyrs. It is widely believed today that the pope was attempting to replace the Celtic festival of the dead with a related, but church-sanctioned holiday. The celebration was also called All-hallows or All-hallowmas (from Middle English Alholowmesse meaning All Saints' Day) and the night before it, the night of Samhain, began to be called All-hallows Eve and, eventually, Halloween. Even later, in A.D. 1000, the church would make November 2 All Souls' Day, a day to honor the dead. It was celebrated similarly to Samhain, with big bonfires, parades, and dressing up in costumes as saints, angels, and devils. Together, the three celebrations, the eve of All Saints', All Saints', and All Souls', were called Hallowmas

78 Frank IBC, Abu Feh  Wed, Nov 19, 2003 7:29:05am

Yes, Christmas originates in the Winter Solistice celebration.

Previously I assumed that the reason that Christmas is on December 25, instead of December 22, the actual date of the Solstice, was due to calendar error. But it turns out that when the sun "bottoms out" during the Solstice, it stays in more or less the same position, in terms of height in the sky at noon, from about December 20 through 24. For you engineers and mathematicians, it's like a sine wave - minimum change at the extremes, maximum change at the extremes.

December 25 is the first day in which the sun is noticeably higher at noon following the Solstice - thus it is (re)"born" on that day.

Halloween/All Saints Day is on or about the midpoint between the Autumnal Equinox and the Winter Solstice; Candlemas/Groundhog Day is on the midpoint between the Winter Solstice and the Vernal Equinox; May Day is on the midpoint between the Vernal Equinox and the Summer Solstice. There used to be a festival on the midpoint between the Summer Solstice and the Autumnal Equinox, on or about August 1, but that has passed into insignificance.

This is the biggest load of crap I've yet to see about Samhain. Read some real Celtic history, sir, and get away from Chick tracts.

The Gaels never worhsipped any deity called "Muck Olla." The Gaelic sun god was named Lugh. The Grim Reaper is a comparatively recent Christian invention and had nothing to do with the pre-Christian (or post-Christian) celebration of Samhain. Where you got your "animal's bodies" thing is beyond me, and the thing about burning people alive in wicker cages comes from a fourth-hand report passed along by Julius Caesar and referred to practices in Gaul (now France), not Ireland. Tom Sanguinet is an ignorant liar who was never a Wiccan priest, and even if he was, Wicca has absolutely nothing to do with northern European native religions. Wicca is a 20th-century development based in 19th-century romanticism.

If you want to feel good, stay in this thread. The one below with the Robert Spencer interview, and the one above about the latest anti-Semitic outrage in France, aren't quite so mood-enhancing.

98 Occasional Reader  Wed, Nov 19, 2003 7:41:20am

Idea I'm batting around: we need to encourage emigration of the "peace protester" types. I, personally, would happily help to fund their emigration to the socialist or islamist utopia of their choice. I'd even be in favor of identifying some large, unoccupied tract of land somewhere on the globe, and letting them set up their own country. True, it would collapse in a matter of weeks, but that would no longer be our problem.

I'm trying to laugh at the pink tanks and giant puppets, but my usually durable sense of humor is just deserting me today. I'm sick to death of these useful idiots and the evil puppetmasters, both islamist and communist, who are manipulating them. I'm sick to death of the extent to which their imbecilic, whining "ideology" (if it can be called that) has infected even normally reasonable people that I know.

100 Ann Northcutt Gray  Wed, Nov 19, 2003 7:42:13am

A little knowledge will do you more harm than good Ann.

And you should know ... ;)

By the 800s, the influence of Christianity had spread into Celtic lands.

Much earlier than that, actually. Roman-style dedications to Christ are recorded in Northern England in the second century AD, and Christianity began making a serious impact in Ireland by the fourth century.

In the seventh century, Pope Boniface IV designated November 1 All Saints' Day, a time to honor saints and martyrs. It is widely believed today that the pope was attempting to replace the Celtic festival of the dead with a related, but church-sanctioned holiday.

Did I say otherwise? Samhain and All Saints Day are not the same. Do you disagree?

The celebration was also called All-hallows or All-hallowmas (from Middle English Alholowmesse meaning All Saints' Day) and the night before it, the night of Samhain, began to be called All-hallows Eve and, eventually, Halloween.

These are Christian developments, which I was not addressing. The festival of Samhain was not a Christian festival. All Saints Day is a Catholic festival.

Even later, in A.D. 1000, the church would make November 2 All Souls' Day, a day to honor the dead. It was celebrated similarly to Samhain, with big bonfires, parades, and dressing up in costumes as saints, angels, and devils. Together, the three celebrations, the eve of All Saints', All Saints', and All Souls', were called Hallowmas.

Yes, and this reflects the fact that the Church was able to take hold in Gaelic lands because it adapted to the culture rather than crushing it - in most cases.

If only Islam was the same, eh? ;)

My 5 year old asked, "Is that a Baathist Church?" in all innocence.

Seems she had gotten the discussion where we were talking about the Pastor of the church being married to a friend's mother and Saddam Hussein mixed up.

I still wonder what was running through her head. Maybe she thought that was the church where they arranged mortar fire or something.

I said:

Halloween is derived from 'Hallowed Eve' a festival of the saints. It's another festival that was lifted by the church from pre-christian beginnings.

You said:

You're getting Halloween mixed up with All Saints Day.

Halloween was not originally a festival of saints.

I'm not sure what you are arguing now, but since Halloween is derived from Hallows Eve; a catholic festival of the saints, and it was originally from Ireland, and supplanting a pre-christain festival (just like Christmas and the Harvest Festival), I'd say that I'd proved my point.

I got it in an email long, long ago... #82 says it's "the biggest load of crap I've yet to see about Samhain." VFI has her own take. But here's some links to Sanguinet articles:

Steve, I'm sorry I was rude. But I am pagan, and it hurts me to see these lies perpetuated. And lies they are. Tom Sanguinet is a con man who has been in and out of trouble with the law. He knows as much about real Wicca as, well, you do. Despite its continued abuse from fundamentalist Christianity, Wicca is actually a very benign religion that has its roots in 19th century romanticism. It is pantheistic rather than polytheistic and people who practice it really just want to be left alone. They're not out to sacrifice your children, in fact sacrifice is not allowed in Wicca. Now, I am not Wiccan, but I know many Wiccans and I have been a part of many Wiccan rituals. Wicca is not a threat to Christianity or any other religion, Wiccans are not violent, abnormal people, Wiccans have no concept similar to jihad, and Tom Sanguinet tells lies that are quite frankly on the level of some of the kind of anti-Jewish hysteria Charles posts here.

Neither does Wicca have ancient origins, and any Wiccan (including fake Wiccans, like Tom Sanguinet) that expounds on early European religions without citing appropriate scholarly sources is generally not to be taken as anything serious. There are plenty of competent Celtic scholars out there, including Proinsas MacCana, Damian MacManus, Miranda Green, Barry Cunliffe, and Anne Ross.

Tom Sanguinet is a holy roller carnival barker who makes a quick buck from people who are frightened of the unknown - namely, a new and misunderstood pantheistic religion called Wicca.

As for the Buckingham picture, who knows when that image was actually taken? During midday? Dawn? Dusk? The sky is uniformly gloomy so there's no cue there. If the picture was taken early in the morning or late in the afternoon, it could account for the lack of crowds. Also, it does appear that the picture is underexposed. There's also no baseline to normal crowds here either.

It's as though someone could take a picture of Times Square at dawn of an overcast day and say that NYC is empty, when in fact just a few hours later it's full-up with people.

Also, note that there aren't any crowds of anti-Bush protestors present; where are the huge crowds of protestors? If the anti-war/anti-Bush crowds are so huge, where are they? Everyone is anti-Bush, but there's no one to say so? How can that be?

Cardboard cruiser with a kewl skull mask
For my luv mission it's up to the task
Gotta chicky-babe gunner with a chrome helmet on

Got a handmade, tie-dyed hippie peace flag
The fuel it costs a "nickle" a bag,
The main barrel 's made of shippin' tubes
Blastin' 88mm shots of good vibes at uptight dudes
Got machine guns made of empty bog rolls
With happy paper flowers sticking out of the holes

Trucking down the road in my peaceful pink tank
Gonna scare the hate out of that Bushitler yank
Scare him all the way back to the US of A
And we will then have, forevermore, happy daze!

My li'l pink tanky brings mental pain

You'll see my pink tanky again and again
Unless it gets caught in the pouring rain...

I don't know why I'm getting into this, may be because VFI is successfully hijacking the thread, but:

Halloween isn't an American holiday, It's originally an Irish festival. The British don't really have a history of Halloween since it's essentially a catholic festival.

What in this world is Catholic about the winter equinox? Halloween is just so obviously PAGAN. VFI, once again, you have no idea what you are talking about.

Holy Lug Samildananch and Angus Mac Og, Séamus! I agree with #58:

Don't forget that we are here to mock the idiots, not talk to idiots.

But, if you all must know, here is what Britannica has to say about Halloween.

HALLOWEEN, also called ALL HALLOWS' EVE or ALL HALLOWS' EVENING a holy or hallowed evening observed on October 31, the eve of All Saints' Day. In modern times, it is the occasion for pranks and for children requesting treats or threatening tricks.

In ancient Britain and Ireland, the Celtic festival of Samhain eve was observed on October 31, at the end of summer. This date was also the eve of the new year in both Celtic and Anglo-Saxon times and was the occasion for one of the ancient fire festivals when huge bonfires were set on hilltops to frighten away evil spirits. The date was connected with the return of herds from pasture, and laws and land tenures were renewed. The souls of the dead were supposed to revisit their homes on this day, and the autumnal festival acquired sinister significance, with ghosts, witches, hobgoblins, black cats, fairies, and demons of all kinds said to be roaming about. It was the time to placate the supernatural powers controlling the processes of nature. In addition, Halloween was thought to be the most favourable time for divinations concerning marriage, luck, health, and death. It was the only day on which the help of the devil was invoked for such purposes.

The pagan observances influenced the Christian festival of All Hallows' Eve, celebrated on the same date. Gradually, Halloween became a secular observance, and many customs and practices developed. In Scotland young people assembled for games to ascertain which of them would marry during the year and in what order the marriages would occur. Many Halloween customs have become games played by children.

Immigrants to the U.S., particularly the Irish, introduced secular Halloween customs that became popular in the late 19th century. Mischief-making on this occasion by boys and young men included overturning sheds and outhouses and breaking windows, and damage to property was sometimes severe. In later years, the occasion has come to be observed mainly by small children, who go from house to house, often in costume, demanding "trick or treat" (the treat, often candy, is generally given and the trick rarely played). Since 1965, Unicef, an agency of the United Nations, has attempted to incorporate into the Halloween observance the collection of money for the United Nations Children's Fund.

So enough of this, and if anyone keeps this up, go salaí na gráinneoga cealgrúnacha do chuid calóga arbhair! Aye, laddie.

If I had only this ridiculous attempt at retro-60s street theater as the basis for a conclusion, I would have to say that it is still about 1972 in Europe.
This is important only because such techniques depend on their freshness and originality for effect.
By American standards, they are almost quaint, reminiscent of gonzo journalism and the other trappings of pop-culture's absolutist era.
Yet, as our favorite authority tells us, we must not ridicule and mock the Left's moth-eaten display of ridicule and mockery, lest we reveal our ignorance of the hallowed traditions of political humor and satire.
What would Jonathan Swift make of a pink tank? I cannot say, since I do not believe in spiritualism or other forms of clairvoyance.
I ask, though, because we can infer from many sources that the presumption of European cultural-elitist sycophants is almost boundless. Consequently, they may be willing to speak for Mr. Swift.
(BTW, did you know that the presumption of clairvoyance is a clinical symptom of alcoholism?)
Even so, according to the opposition, it is important that we not dismiss and demonize our opponents as mentally ill simply because they, for example, misuse the authority of professional privelege to lampoon GWB as mentally ill. After all, we are not invoking coercive authority.
Could that be the real test of a protest's validity for the Left?

160 Jonny  Wed, Nov 19, 2003 12:09:12pm

Didn't look like there were too many people protesting.

Re: the discussion of the origins of Halloween: you people all have it wrong. On Halloween, the Great Pumpkin arises from a pumpkin patch, and delivers toys to children all around the world.

Well, okay, so he didn't quite show up this year, but next year I just know he will.

Well said.

Too many set ups, so little bandwidth-

"The Fire Island Junior Militia on Parade"

"Neverland Ranch Security Force unleashed on public"

"Willy Wonka finally says ENOUGH, and sends out the Oompa Army"

"That's the last time I drop a hit before a May Day Parade"

"ANSWER and ISM send crack reinforcements to the Muhajadeen ALLAHOOO SNACKBAR!!!"

From Bush in England:

"Israel should freeze settlement construction, dismantle unauthorized outposts, end the daily humiliation of the Palestinian people and not prejudice final negotiations with the placement of walls and fences," Bush said in the keynote speech of his three-day state visit to Britain.

He must be scared by the pink tank.

British media reacts to visit with hysteria

Not since the Spice Girls broke up has so much hyperbole been lavished on so little news.

Typical trype in the British press regarding the Americans.

Hey, haven't I seen that pink tank somewhere before? Oh, right, that's the Palestinian tank from earlier this year!

168 Tony Sousa  Wed, Nov 19, 2003 12:38:39pm

The beautiful child being used as a prop in the front of the pink tank is 6-year-old Juan Stone from Daventry.
The balloons are bio-degradable, naturally.

176 Jackal  Wed, Nov 19, 2003 3:43:55pm

In the town where I was born
Lived a girl who was a hippy
And she told us of her life
In the lands of Stalin and Mao

So we rode up to the Thames
Till we found the tank of fools
And we lived without bathing
In our pink cardboard tank

We all live in our pink cardboard tank,
Pink cardboard tank, pink cardboard tank
We all live in our pink cardboard tank,
Pink cardboard tank, pink cardboard tank

And our friends are all on board
Dozens more of them march along
And ANSWER begins to scream

We all live in our pink cardboard tank,
Pink cardboard tank, pink cardboard tank
We all live in our pink cardboard tank,
Pink cardboard tank, pink cardboard tank

As we live a life of ease
Everyone of us has all we need
Who needs jobs when you have the dole
In our pink cardboard tank

We all live in our pink cardboard tank,
Pink cardboard tank, pink cardboard tank
We all live in our pink cardboard tank,
Pink cardboard tank, pink cardboard tank

We all live in our pink cardboard tank,
Pink cardboard tank, pink cardboard tank
We all live in our pink cardboard tank,
Pink cardboard tank, pink cardboard tank

Someone ought to tell those bozos that their balloons (in the picture) are made of Mylar, which isn't really all that biodegradeable. What a bunch of balloons, errr, buffoons! They will believe anything...

#190 zulubaby -- "Here are a couple of lovelies from Scotland . . ."

I can't help but notice these things. Even though it's only a toy shotgun, one would expect the LLL to be sensitive to demonstrating at least some awareness of safe firearms handling. If the LLL ever really armed themselves they'd be responsible for the greater part of their own casualties.

Rule 3: "Finger OFF the trigger until ready to fire". The only other person I've seen handle a firearm that way is in a photo Diane Feinstein. Hmmmm. Where was she today?

Back from Wichita Falls.

I had a Halloween costume once, when I was about 5, that had a plastic mask ( Batman? Spiderman?), I don't remember. But I do remember my face got kind of sweaty, I think partly from the recycled breath.

The Balsers, the people that lived next door, had a weathervane on their house, and when I was about 3 years old I thought it was a witch, and it used to scare me. I think I had seen "The Wizard of Oz" not to long before then.

That giant white thing behind the carriage w/ the faux Bush, was that supposed to be a dildo or something?

200 Ed Moran:P'd at the Exxon in Decatur, TX  Wed, Nov 19, 2003 6:21:34pm

Does anybody know why the shower heads in the La Quinta in Wichita Falls is about 4' above tub floor level, such that one needs to either bend over or squat to rinse hair?

Interesting, the local CBS morning news for the Texoma region had a two minute weather report, thirty seconds of news headlines, and the rest of the half hour was the farm report. It was a real farmer looking guy, with a bottle of what I think was some kind of cattle pharmaceutical, talking about how he thought the new tax breaks for ethanol fuel from corn would help Texoma farmers, even though they don't grow much corn. Also, will a looming trade war with China hurt wheat exports?. Enquiring farmers want to know.

I also didn't know there were so many varieties of cattle that could be auctioned.

I did some channel surfing, and every local affiliate had the farm & ranch report. I never realized how deprived people in Dallas, Austin and Houston are not to be able to watch thirty minutes of the farm report every morning.

Back from Wichita Falls.

Howdy, Ed!

That giant white thing behind the carriage w/ the faux Bush, was that supposed to be a

Missile - a deadly, scary, *lethal* missile. And its not even pink--RUN AWWAYYYYYYYYY!!!!!!!!!!!!

(Sound of coconut shells clapping together)

/Monty Python and the Holy Grail sound effects

I cheated - saw it from a different view. There was another pic with a group of females in um--um-- clown/ballet/cat suits with optional face paint and mandatory giant-crayon-of-death missles that walked alongside the carriage (unless they were posing in a group w/it - gotta hand it to 'em. Must be hard to "pose sexy" outdoors with a 2-meter crayon missile).

It is really truly sad - to imagine this would make a "difference" in the world.

Comes the shari'a, the druggie/boozie guys get gunned down and the wenches get divvied up. The little boy goes to a high-ranking officer, of course. (Wonder if they'll be using modern medicine if they get to start making eunuchs?)

And the lefties play on with their cardboard WMDs....

Thanks! I particularly like your use of the Cat in the Hat-- I have three of the furry critters, and I sometimes get evil fantasies of turning the Arafish into cat food. Unfortunately he's probably poisonous, and feeding him to cats would bring down the wrath of PETA on me. Not to mention that my cats would take their own revenge outside the box.

205 Frank IBC, Abu Dead Celtic Witch  Thu, Nov 20, 2003 5:06:42am

207 Stupid White Man  Thu, Nov 20, 2003 10:09:30am

Many made the association with carnaval, and I think it's a correct observation. It's the world upside- down. 'Bush is the greatest terrorist, etc.' It's a carnavalisation of the world. James Ensor made a very profetic painting about this [Link: www.getty.edu...]

Take notice of the skull on the left, and the slogan on the red flag: vive la sociale! Long live socialism.

208 Old Patriot  Thu, Nov 20, 2003 6:17:32pm

I spent two years in England, and loved it - the people, the countryside, the history, the foreign food... At the same time, the Brits have a patent on "lunatic fringe", as that pathetic pink tank demonstrates. That small child, in one photo, was obviously thinking "This is the dumbest thing my parents have ever forced me to do." That should be labeled child abuse, and the poor kid sent to a farm in the Lake District for a few years to compensate.

The comentary is excellent! Any day I can laugh is a good day, and some of you have definitely made this a good day!

209 veebee  Thu, Nov 20, 2003 9:16:15pm

Think of what this girl will experience at school tomorrow... if her parents bother to take her to school, that is.

210 Roger  Sat, Nov 22, 2003 1:01:16pm

Firstly, a few hundred protestors? check your dates. There were a few hundred on wednesday. On thursday, the police estimated 70,000. The organisers estimated 400,000. It is traditional in Britain that the organisers overestimate and the police underestimate, so it's probably somewhere in the middle. I helped push that pink tank and it recieved a great amount of attention. I got to know the girl and she loved being at the centre of attention, as she was talking into the microphone a lot.

Did Bush's visit recieve much attention in the US? All those who went on the march did so to stop Bush from using it as an election tool. The people of Britain are for the most part opposed to Bush, whether they supported the war or not. The supporters tend to be patriots and right wingers, who object to the amount of control Dubya seems to have. The anti-war movement tend to be left wingers so obviously dislike the American foreign policy.

DO NOT THINK THAT WE HATE AMERICA!!! Americans marched under their flag on the demo, and recieved support from all. Many of us have a love of America which will outlast this president and many more to come.
A fine example of this is the way the American way of celebrating Hallowe'en has become popular in Britain in a way it never was before.

Roger

211 Dom  Sat, Nov 22, 2003 4:19:52pm

OK. Only a lot of you really seem to hate America but it's good to beware the guy behind the pink tank's more devious.

212 Dom  Sat, Nov 22, 2003 4:23:59pm

Or deeply vapid.

213 Katie  Mon, Nov 24, 2003 7:17:17am

actually the kid in the tank is a boy. Popular movements need people with a sense of fun and street theatre as well as serious talkers and writers. And if you give up a day to come to London and protest you appreciate someone like the tank -maker who has gone to much trouble to transform an emblem of aggression, through colour, into one of peace.
