I don't even care if they do it legally or not, as long as it's non-violently.

A little civil disobedience can be a good thing. Attacking police with a homemade mace is just stupid. I hope that dickwad gets charged with a felony.

Exactly right. There was no suffragette or civil rights movement without civil disobedience, which is to say, breaking the law. Frankly, both of those movements also contained "violent" dimensions too, and I'm not talking about violence against people. Property damage (and window smashing) featured centrally in the suffragette movement. This kind of thing is easier to understand in retrospect.

I'm a big fan of civil disobedience. However, a protest against ALEC is not comparable with the civil rights movement nor the women's suffrage movement. It is not time to damage property in the name of this cause. ALEC is just one organization. The first step is to get more people to realize what it is and what it is doing. How much do you know about it? Do you think breaking windows would help get the word out?
