Video: Trump Has ‘Kept His Eyes Closed for Most of the Day’ as Michael Cohen’s Testimony Resumes

Law • Views: 14,086

Here’s the latest from the Orange Trial, where our criminal ex-president has been, uh, meditating quite a bit with his eyes closed.

Lawfare Legal Fellow and Courts Correspondent Anna Bower was inside the courthouse this morning as Michael Cohen’s cross-examination continues and shares more on former President Trump’s reaction.

I gotta wonder how a jury reads something like this. It’s just odd behavior, and one not likely to make me feel sympathy for a guy.

I imagine it’s up to the individuals on the jury, but if I was on that jury, it’s a guy who cares so little about the process or the evidence being presented against him that he can’t be bothered to stay focused and attentive.

Or he thinks he’s got the appellate process bought and paid for that he’s not sweating any of this.

Whether that is actually the case is going to be tested here in short order.

There’s got to be at least one juror who’s just seeing him as an old man being put through the wringer and is actually feeling bad for that motherfucker.

That’s the shit I worry about with this trial. That, and if there are any undercover MAGAts on the jury.

If that were the case, I’d think they would feel assuaged by the cavalcade of GOP fanbois clapping for him every time he farts in the courtroom. It’s hard to feel sorry for a guy running for President who has the support of his party having to sit in the same dingy courtroom you are while you serve on a jury.

Amal Clooney has been named among the experts who advised the International Criminal Court on seeking arrest warrants for Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Hamas leader Yahya Sinwar.

The ICC’s chief prosecutor, Karim Khan, confirmed to CNN’s Christiane Amanpour on Monday that the court is seeking warrants on charges of war crimes and crimes against humanity surrounding the ongoing conflict in Gaza.

We have some roundabouts in NJ and plenty of jughandles, and I always use signal for any lane change, because that’s how my dad taught me - always signal your intentions, even if no one else is on the road, because there might be someone else on the road that you don’t see (like in blind spots). It’s served me well, and I was taught roundabouts have the right of way, and that vehicles entering the roundabout have to yield to traffic already in the roundabout. My sense is they work better at lower speeds than higher speeds, and that single lane roundabouts are easier to figure that multilane ones.

Wyoming is planting roundabouts all over the place.

The state is cheap though, so the centre islands are really tiny. In Cheyenne where they have multi-lane and five or six streets coming into a roundabout, they are downright dangerous. (More pedestrians and bicyclists are killed in them now than when they had traffic lights.) Except for Interstate 25 (where you can’t avoid roundabouts on the ramps), I plan routes through the city to explicitly avoid their roundabouts.

The United Nations’ humanitarian chief has warned of “apocalyptic” consequences due to aid shortages in Gaza, where Israel’s military offensive in the southern city of Rafah has blocked desperately needed food.

“If fuel runs out, aid doesn’t get to the people where they need it. That famine, which we have talked about for so long, and which is looming, will not be looming any more. It will be present,” the UN under-secretary general for humanitarian affairs and emergency relief coordinator, Martin Griffiths, told AFP on the sidelines of meetings with Qatari officials in Doha.

“And I think our worry, as citizens of the international community, is that the consequence is going to be really, really hard. Hard, difficult, and apocalyptic.”

Griffith said 50 trucks of aid a day could reach the hardest-hit people north of Gaza through the reopened Erez crossing on the northern frontier. However, he added, the battles near the Rafah and Kerem Shalom crossings in Gaza’s south meant the vital routes were effectively blocked.

“So aid getting in through land routes to the south and for Rafah, and the people dislodged by Rafah is almost nil,” Griffiths added. “And we all said that very clearly, that a Rafah operation is a disaster in humanitarian terms, a disaster for the people already displaced to Rafah. This is now their fourth or fifth displacement,” he said.

With key land crossings closed, some relief supplies began flowing in this week via a temporary floating pier constructed by the US. Griffiths said the maritime operation was beginning to bring in truckloads of aid, but he cautioned: “It’s not a replacement for the land routes.”

Roundabouts: Note that people like the mayor in Indiana and the State of Wyoming argue that roundabouts save money (then they make tax cuts).

Highway engineering is supposed to be about safety and efficient traffic flow, not saving money.

They are quite willing to sacrifice bicyclists, pedestrians, and motorcyclists (and other cars) to “save money.”

If you’re the defendant, you have the right to testify in court on your behalf. Some do. Some wont, because they can only implicate themselves further.

Trump’s in the latter group.

We know what really happened. His lawyers know that putting him on the stand is an absolute disaster (both in this case, and potentially exposing him to additional charges, including perjury, witness tampering, etc.), so they wont call him. Rather, expect they’ll rest and go to closing arguments.

Regarding traffic circles/roundabouts:

As a long time NJ resident, I do not miss them in the slightest. As with much of the roadways in this state, they were a good idea when car ownership and the population were much lower.

That said, NJ traffic circles were great at 2AM. You could get home much faster because there were no traffic lights to slow you down.

Trying to figure out why my iMac hangs after a while, especially after napping… and I am wondering if the external boot Mojave is causing me problems.

I want to keep Mojave because that is the last version of OSX on which Photoshop CS6 will run. Adobe’s Creative Cloud strikes me as exploitive.

Looking at the spindump from the last hang, seems like Mac disk software caused the problem.

I suspect the warning I get from Mojave upon boot, that it can’t read a certain disk because it uses a format that Mojave can’t read, is part of the problem.

We have a great roundabout near us that has won all sorts of awards.

Roundabout

It is at a major intersection in the wine district that always backed up at rush hour. And with several shopping centers that got backed up as people tried to turn left into backed up traffic.

No longer. It is well marked on which lanes do what and traffic moves really well now. It is two laned on one side and one lane on the other. SO it does not really have much of a merging problem or a tendency to get trapped.

The cool thing here are the 2 extra circles, one to the south east and one to the west. These allow people in the shopping centers to turn right then loop the smaller circle instead of turning left. In short, you can always turn right and get to any direction you want.

The city liked it so much that it has added a handful more around the city.

One of the big problems with trying to keep a digital asset working for multiple decades is that the corporations (such as Apple and Adobe) do not want you to do that.

They want you to buy new things every couple of years, or at least pay them a monthly rental.

For my purposes I doubt I need anything more in my life than the original OSX port of the Next Step version of the multi-user version of UNIX.

I hear there are still a great many Windows 10 users who are going to be hung out on the line when Microsoft deep sixes it in the near future.

The talking heads blather these days about “sustainability” but never seem to mention that the global economy of interlinked multinational corporations is a framework for civilization that cannot be sustained on this planet.

I think it’s Rudy’s self-importance coming to the fore. He wants the service of process to be about him - dignified, quiet, respecting his status as the Hero of 9/11 and (former) Lawyer to the Savior of America. He doesn’t get that service of process is about the service, and however the process server can get it done, that’s how it gets done.

while I understand that Michael Cohen is a long way from being a “good guy”, he’s also a guy who has been proper fooked by his old employer; in that his former living is no longer available to him and he can only find payment by being a reliable observer of things in the past. Rather limited in outlook and no guarantees of future recidivism, yet in the parlance, he’s a stand up guy. Owning what he did, remorseful about it to a degree (i.e. that he got caught and it cost him just about everything) but happy to be pragmatic about what he was responsible for and under whose direction.

He’s a terrible witness for the defense because he has no fucks left to give and they can’t threaten him any further because he’s already been run over by the judicial bus.

I don’t know who is still out there trying to hide from this fact, but Trump courting the former head of Hells Angels is a pretty clear signal that we’re headed for more violence this election.

NYT:
Chuck Zito, who was a former leader of the Hells Angels motorcycle gang, was among the crowd of Donald Trump’s supporters at his hush-money trial in Manhattan on Monday. He was joined by several other allies who have been charged with crimes.

Given how many people seem to complain about Windows 11, I’m wondering if Microsoft sticking with “CoPilot” as the brand for their fancy smart-y interface is a good thing.

If only the US will allow Huawei to compete in this country then there’d be some real pressure on both Microsoft and Apple to not do the preserve-our-ground-at-all-costs strategy.

And I suspect that the masses of PCs out there which are used only to run some retail terminal or user-accounts (such as at your local doctor’s office) really need anything else as far as software.

What is needed is lower operating costs by reducing energy demand, and longevity.

I still have not found a need for the desktop Spotlight, Apple’s text prompt on the desktop, or even LaunchPad, which they introduced years ago as a desktop selector for apps. It’s easier to just open the Applications folder.

I don’t think defendants typically get to sit out for the appeals, do they? I know trump isn’t exactly typical, but if I were the judge, I’d weigh defendant’s complete lack of remorse and potential damage he could do from his giant pulpit and I’d remand him into custody.

Captain Underpants gets pissed at Norm Eisen…

Alan Dershowitz, a prominent lawyer and cable news legal analyst known for representing O.J. Simpson during his murder trial and Donald Trump during his first impeachment proceedings, got into a courtroom tiff with his counterpart at CNN, Norm Eisen, during Trump’s New York City trial on Monday, according to NBC News, which witnessed the tense exchange. The two have been rivals for years—Eisen also worked for House Democrats during Trump’s first impeachment. NBC News reported that Dershowitz could be heard telling Eisen that he did not show up at the courthouse for political reasons—though security quickly shut down the exchange and asked Dershowitz, a Fox News regular, to return to his seat, which just so happened to be in a section reserved for friends and family of the former president. The prosecution rested its case on Monday after hearing testimony from Trump’s former lawyer and fixer Michael Cohen.

Sa-weet!

Today, I was watching a YouTube video on the Lehto’s Law channel (Steve Lehto is a lawyer in Michigan) where he reported on a story out of a casino (it was in the US) somewhere. He didn’t mention the name. Apparently, a 72 year old woman thought she’d won a $1.3M jackpot at a slot machine, only to be told that there was a fault in the machine and that she didn’t actually win. No further explanation was provided. Further, the attendant then asked that she leave the casino! She says that the machine was behaving normally and that there was no indication that it was broken.

As you might expect, a lawsuit has been filed.

Can you even imagine something like that happening here in the US? Some bloke is hired to bring down a brick chimney with a huge fire at its base while people in town gather 100 feet or so away to watch with some small boys helping by throwing lumber and rubber tires onto the bonfire. No cops, no OSHA, no EPA, no sirens (he did blow a tin whistle, however), no perimeters keeping people a half mile or more away. Probably didn’t even have insurance.

By Monday night, The Apprentice still didn’t have a U.S. distributor in place, although it sold earlier in the Cannes festival to StudioCanal for the U.K. and Ireland, where it will be released theatrically later this year.

Part of me hopes that a US distribution deal is being worked on, but the cynical part of me thinks the major US studios and streaming services are trying to avoid The Apprentice like the plague, because they’re being chickenshits trying to avoid raising Hair Furor’s ire in case he gets elected again.
