Biased British Writer Denied
Finally, Israel is getting wise to the tricks of the International Solidarity Movement and their comrades, and denying entry to (or deporting) the worst of them—like Ewa Jasiewicz: Biased British writer denied entry. (Hat tip: zulubaby.)
According to the lawyer representing 26-year-old Ewa Jasiewicz, security officials barred her from entering the country Wednesday because they said she is biased in her reporting and likely to come in contact with violent Palestinian organizations.
Jasiewicz has written critically of Israeli policy and is affiliated with the pro-Palestinian International Solidarity Movement (ISM).
She told her lawyer, Yael Berda, that her interrogators said “she is not a journalist, but a journalist-activist” and that “they didn’t think she was a security threat but it was probable that she would meet violent Palestinians.”
Interior Ministry spokeswoman Tova Ellinson would say only that the detention was based on “security reasons” and declined to answer further questions on the basis that they were not within the scope of the ministry.
Jasiewicz has visited Israel and the territories twice previously and done activist work including observing checkpoints and riding in ambulances in Palestinian towns under curfew. She’s written about left-wing causes, including pieces critical of the American-led occupation in Iraq and in support of trade unions. Her stories have appeared in a variety of on-line and print publications, including the British Labour Party’s internal magazine and Red Pepper, which describes itself as an “independent magazine of the green and radical left” on its Web site.
Berda said that the fact that Jasiewicz legally changed her name to visit Israel last year and then changed back to her original name for this trip was also raised as an issue by security officials.
Here’s a Google search on Ewa Jasiewicz. Wow. Pretty deep. I advise hip boots (maybe even a full CBW suit) before wading in.
