the siege of kala-i janghi
The Times of London has a detailed account of the battle in the ancient mudbrick fortress near Mazar Sharif: CIA blunder sparked Taleban revolt that became a mass suicide.
Update: that headline has bugged me ever since I blogged it. Who decided that a “CIA blunder” was responsible for the prison uprising? (A Times editor, that’s who.) Seems to me the Northern Alliance’s sloppy management of prisoners was more to blame; apparently they didn’t even search two of the trucks transporting prisoners to the fort, and it’s a fact that some of the prisoners had concealed weapons.
