Clown Attack!

World • Views: 2,929

The United Nations “anti-racism” conference opened today in Geneva, Switzerland, on the birthday of Adolf Hitler, appropriately enough — featuring a speech by Iran’s Holocaust denying president Mahmoud Ahmadinejad.

And then, the clowns attacked with soft red objects.

Youtube Video

Iran’s president slams Israel, sparking Western walkout at UN racism conference.

GENEVA (AP) — Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad accused Israel of being the “most cruel and racist regime,” sparking a walkout Monday by angry Western diplomats at a U.N. racism conference. …

Protesters dressed with clown wigs and holding placards repeatedly interrupted Ahmadinejad’s speech with shouts of “Shame! shame!” and “Racist! racist!” throwing soft red objects on the podium. Later, about 100 members of mainly pro-Israel and Jewish groups blocked Ahmadinejad’s entrance to a scheduled news conference.

Ahmadinejad, in a rambling speech, accused Israel of being the “most cruel and racist regime” and pointed the finger at the United States and Europe for helping to establish the country after World War II “under the pretext of Jewish suffering.”

That prompted a walkout by some 40 diplomats from European countries such as Britain and France, which had threatened to leave the conference if it descended into anti-Semitic or other rhetoric harshly critical of Israel, which marred the U.N.’s last racism gathering.

Send in the clowns.....

Of course the biggest clown was the one on the podium, and those supporting him.

Gonna head to bed a bit early tonight, been up since 5:30 AM.

I leave you all with some complimentary Sun Tzu.

One who speaks deferentially but increases his preparations will advance. One who speaks belligerently and advances hastily will retreat.

One who seeks peace without setting any prior conditions is executing a stratagem.

One whose troops half advance and half retreat is enticing you.

Make of it what you will, and good night. Cheers.

33 MJ  Mon, Apr 20, 2009 8:47:03am

According to the JTA:

When it was finally over, the prime minister of Norway took the stage. He said Ahmadinejad's speech threatened the conference, was "incitment to hatred" and one of "intolerance." He said it had made Iran the "odd man out" (I wonder how that translates to Farsi). "Norway will not accept that the odd man out hijacks the collective efforts of the many," he said, to applause. He also vowed that Norway would not surrender the rostrum of the United Nations to extremism -- a swipe at Iran, sure, but also against the United States and others who elected to boycott the conference.

There is a new tradition in Europe of protesters dressing like clowns. They've done it every year at the G8/G20/G-whatever conferences. As far as UN protests go, here is a gay rights group who protested:

GAYS DISRUPT UN SECRETARY GENERAL BAN KI-MOON
AT MEETING IN SAN FRANCISCO

BAN SAYS: "GAY RIGHTS ISSUE IS VERY SENSITIVE"

SAN FRANCISCO (July 26) -- A group of activists staged a protest at an evening meeting at the Fairmont Hotel featuring the United Nations Secretary General Ban Ki-Moon, in order to protest the unconscionable, murderous silence of the United Nations concerning continued violence and executions globally which specifically target gays and lesbians. Ban was speaking before the World Affairs Council of Northern California, as San Francisco is considered the birthplace of the UN.
...
“The UN has been silent for far too long, as our gay brothers and lesbian sisters are aggressively selected for human rights violations, torture and execution across the globe, simply due to their sexual orientation,” said [Michael] Petrelis, who organized the protest.

“In the last year alone, our brothers and sisters have been maimed and slaughtered in too many incidents around the world,” said Hank Wilson. “This includes the violent attacks on gays in Eastern European pride marches; the killings of Jamaican gays; and the ongoing executions of gays in Iran. The United Nations never fails to speak out against injustice and human rights violations as they happen, but they are criminally silent when it comes to the murders of lesbians and gay men.”

re: #173 sarah

According to some it's being boycotted by 10 nations (some news reports allege that it's eight) -- see my previous post for a list of nations boycotting. However, the delegates who walked out today, after the farsi clown's speech, returned. From a UK Reuter's report about the "UN Racism Summit" (i'm assuming that even Reuters now recognizes that this is a summit for racists), writes: "The walk-out was temporary, and most diplomats returned to the plenary after Ahmadinejad finished speaking, but the Czech delegation said it would not return to the conference." Thus, I'm assuming that now there are 11 states withdrawn from the Summit for Racists.

No, no...Sarkozy didn't attend either -- from that Reuters UK article -- argh-- it was quoting comments made by Harper and Sarkozy (but both were in their respective home countries -- Canada and France.) The highest level diplomat at this event was Iran's President (that's why he delivered the opening address)...no other country sent in so high a level person (no presidents from any country, other than Iran.) France, did, however send in an ambassador (Britain sent in lower level diplomats, no ambassadors.) Also, note that Italy is boycotting (no delegates there), but the Vatican (considered a "state") is there? (?) I've also read some comments at major European "news" sites (France one, etc.) and the "comments" by the "ordinary citizens" (?)-- omg -- absolutely beyond belief (all raging antisemites, imo -- yet all carefully worded and no profanities, yet clearly haters of Israel/Jews of the first order...ironically because the "posters/commenters" making the comments are all so seemingly "level-headed" you couldn't even flag a moderator...it's very, very troublesome.)

Irony indeed. As dinner jacket was waxing anti-Semitic, I was watching a film from the liberation of Bergen Belsen in a program (History television) chronicling the last few months before the Nazi regime was stuffed into the trash bin of history. Alex Colville one of Canada's most respected artists was a War Illustrator in uniform who was there.

Interviewed for the program when he was in his sixties (about) he, with halting voice tried to describe the sight of an open grave pit into which the (captured ) guards were throwing the remains of those they had gassed, starved to death and shot.

Six thousand dead Jews were in that one pit. Colville said that it was impossible to come to grips with the enormity of what he saw.

Never again.

As history tells us, those who bless Israel will be blessed, and those who curse Israel will be cursed. And so, when Ahmadinejad says "Death to Israel (Marg bar Israel)" he is really asking for "Death to Iran."

Hmm...not the best video available of this protest. The protestors screamed "racist" at him, which is missing from this video version. See my post for more dramatic version.

Here's an interesting aspect to the story: "Upon hearing his opening barbs against Israel, the French delegation stood up and walked out. Some 40 diplomats from more than 20 countries, mostly Europeans but including Morocco, followed suit, as did several nongovernmental organizations, including B'nai B'rith International.
