comment promotion

I liked Bjørn Stærk’s nifty new comments feature so much that I ripped it off was inspired to hack out a similar feature today. You may have noticed weblogs (like Daily Pundit) where the comments are included directly on the main page beneath the entry to which they belong. The problem with a system like that on LGF, though, is that we get dozens (sometimes hundreds) of comments per entry, and showing them all on the front page would slow things down enormously for everyone, and greatly increase our bandwidth usage.

Bjørn’s idea is a nice compromise; if I see a comment I think deserves wider attention, I can “promote” it so that the first 20-odd words are shown on the front page, with the author’s name as a link that goes directly to his/her/its comment. I started working on it about noon, and it seems pretty ready to release … so here it is! Ta daa.

Thanks for the idea, Bjørn; hope you don’t mind me stealing it being inspired by it.
