What a brilliantly deadpan headline: Israel Seeks UN Agency’s Help to Stop Bombings.
WASHINGTON (Reuters) - In a clear bid to embarrass an institution Israel has long seen as biased, Israel mounted a campaign Wednesday to get U.N. officials who aid Palestinians in refugee camps to help stop suicide bombings.
The effort could prompt some U.S. lawmakers to reconsider aid to the U.N. Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East, a step the Reagan administration took in 1982 after arms were found in an UNRWA school in Lebanon.
Israel says UNRWA turns a blind eye to militant activities and was incensed at remarks by U.N. Middle East envoy Terje Roed-Larsen in April that the Israeli army used “morally repugnant” tactics in its assault on Jenin refugee camp.
“One of the things that we would like is for UNRWA to alert the United Nations if the U.N. becomes aware of any misuse of refugee camps,” the Israeli foreign ministry’s legal advisor Alan Baker told reporters at a briefing in Washington.
“They can’t be perceived as being Israeli spies. What we expect is that … they do whatever they can within their powers so that these camps fulfill the humanitarian function that they’re supposed to fulfill and not the opposite.”
Yes. It is definitely past time to put the spotlight on the UN, and the corrupt, terrorist-enabling UNRWA. (Via Laurence Simon.)
