IPhone 3.0 Released

Technology • Views: 1,438

The latest version of the iPhone operating system is now available with some big enhancements. To install the latest version connect your iPhone to the computer, launch iTunes, click on your iPhone in the Devices menu in the sidebar, and use the “Check for Update” button in the iPhone’s “Summary” tab. I did the update about 30 minutes ago and had no trouble downloading or installing, although some people were reporting server jams earlier today.

One of the niftier new features: iPhone 3.0 Finds Your Lost iPhone and iPod touch.

I had a chance to mess around with a lady's iPhone the other night. She was showing me the various flashy things you can do with it. It was pretty cool. Now that they've slashed the prices on them, it might be my next phone when my current one craps out.

I think I just heard a pin drop in here.

I hope it has "Get around dictator blocks" feature.

Released? It's not locked anymore? (only half-joking)

I looked at the update for the iTouch, but it isn't worth $10. They really didn't put much effort into the upgrade for the Touch. I will have to get an iPhone at some point.

I want one - but I don't have AT&T for my personal cell phone. I have a yucky blackberry for my work cell.

Anyone watch Democracy Now? (er... I mean... Communism Now). Amy Goodwin and co. don't like Obama. He's not left-wing enough for them. They don't like Obama's "state secrets". In fact the Communism Now crowd/crew thinks that they have a right to know each and every military secret, CIA secret and drug bust, and and and...
I suppose they don't appreciate that Obama has top secret meetings and they are not invited. (flippin idjits)
But they love Cuba. They love a country that has had the same dictator for over 50 years. They love a nation where you must risk your life if you would prefer to leave. I think the Communism Now freaks should relinquish their US citizenship and move to Cuba. Please. NOW.

I have one of those still. I also have one of those "bag phones" still. Of course those were both analog and there are no service providers for them anymore, but I kept them, welll ,, just because

(btw,, I also have an 8 track deck)

don't leave that anywhere, it will probably be blown up as suspicious :)

Too bad the "find my phone" feature requires MobileMe. I cancelled MM because of marginal utility (it couldn't even sync al my calendars properly!), and it's not worth $99 a year for just this feature. They should offer it through iTunes, if they want to be customer-friendly.

22 Crashnburn  Wed, Jun 17, 2009 6:19:24pm

*ONLY* if you upgrade to the 3GS do you get voice commands... you have got to be freaking joking me! I have a seven year old Sony Ericsson that does that with a 50th of the processor power/RAM. Come on Apple, you can do better than that!

23 Chip Designer  Wed, Jun 17, 2009 6:28:23pm

I just upgraded to 3.0, and it is really nice.

For those who have not made up their minds, the I-Phone is much more than a phone. It quickly becomes an essential tool. I just took a Boy Scout troop of 15 scouts to summer camp in Colorado.

During camp, one scout injured his elbow, and I had to drive him into Colorado Springs for X-Rays. The map in the I-Phone showed me the way.

At the clinic, they declined to take the scout's insurance. I pulled up Safari, and showed them that the insurance plan was listed on their website. They relented and treated the scout.

A car wreck blocked the way back, and again the I-Phone map showed me an alternate route.

On Friday night, we were warned about tornadoes and severe thunderstorms. The I-Phone color radar showed me that the storms would pass us by, so I sent everyone to bed.

Driving back to Texas, we used the I-Phone to find a Pizza Hut in Clayton, NM, and to phone our order in while we were 30 miles out. It was ready when we arrived.

All I can say is to don't leave home without it.

24 astronmr20  Wed, Jun 17, 2009 6:30:13pm

Anyone using 3.0 with the regular 3g phone yet?

I'm concerned about speed issues.

25 Dar ul Harb  Wed, Jun 17, 2009 6:31:01pm

My favorite features so far of iPhone 3.0 are that my iPhone has now acquired some of the cutting edge features that my old Palm OS Handspring Treo had years ago, like cut and paste, and the ability to sync notes to the desktop software.

some /sarc

Of course, the other features that it had before the upgrade, like Google Maps, Safari, and the huge variety of third-party apps (in addition to being a slick iPod with a gestural interface) made it an outstanding product despite those limitations.

Now if only AT&T would put as much effort into getting their services (tethering!) up to speed...

Going to bed now, and as I do, I reflect on "Roosevelt the Radio" a 3ft. tall woodie "Thomas" reproduction that I listen to Talk Radio on in Real Time. Quite a conversation piece. Tomorrow I will try out my Sansui P-M7 linear tracking turntable, found last night in a trash pile in Asbury Park, NJ. Vintage Stuff or close approximations can be fun.

Has the iPhone 3.0 OS been PWNed yet? Because I don't want to update to it unless I can then re-PWN the phone -- otherwise, I'll have a "brick" since I don't want to have an AT&T plan, and one must if one is using the full un-PWNed OS.

I haven't even gotten up the nerve to update to iPhone 2.0, much less 3.0.

Excited to try this - I love my iPhone and it really is a tiny mac computer and has replaced my laptop in my life for many things - like surfing the web at 2AM in bed, if I feel like it.

I've bought WAY TOO MANY Apps - but my favorite remains the Tower Defense game "Fieldrunners".

What is yours?

My favorite iPhone game app is hands-down the NYT crossword puzzle delivered by a company called Magmic. New puzzle around midnight every day, embargoed (i.e. locked, no hints) for 24 hours, after that you can unlock it and get letters, words, or if it's driving you mad, the whole puzzle. The puzzles get harder as the week progresses. I can usually do Mondays and Tuesdays in 15 minutes to half an hour, respectively, and then we start talking real time sink. But you can also go back for years and access thousands of older puzzles to keep you happy while fuming over Saturday or Sunday.

Cost: $10/calendar year. Beats subscribing to the Times if all you want's the puzzle. They're still the best in the game. Will Shortz is a god.

I was having memory issues after some health problems and being able to use the puzzles as a form of mental gymnastics has been a godsend.

Um... except there are voice command apps that are either free or cheap (.99) available even for my humble 1st Gen iPhone. (I have Vlingo... works great.)

Good stuff!

Trying to keep this thread alive, where are the other iPhone app addicts?

Some other favorite apps of mine are...

News:
-Bloomberg (great UI, easy on eyes, low 'drag' vis-a-vis ads, free)
-Emer. Radio (emergency fire / police scanner)

Audio:
-Tuner (streaming radio, good for gym)
-WunderRadio (another streaming radio station jukebox)
-iStroboSoft (strobe chromatic tuner from Peterson, amazing resolution/speed... easy UI... still not as good as Boss pedal tuner :)
-Bloom (Brian Eno collaboration for generative / interactive music and graphics creation)

Other:
-iChing (perspective generator for extended ponderings)
-GPS Kit (cool tracking software, fun to watch on trips and bike rides, has maps inc. topo, tracks, waypoints)

I have an embarassing number of shitty apps I bought that sucked. Is there a way to sell used iPhone apps? Just kidding.

You can't. It's a web app, we couldn't solve some tech problem and also needed it to be out at a specific date. Apple has a long winded approval system.
The 2.0 version will be in the store, though.

43 Danny  Thu, Jun 18, 2009 6:08:36am

I ran into a server jam. After the software installed and the phone tried to reinitialize via iTunes, I got a "server connection busy, try again later" message and was left staring at a white screen with "iPhone 3.0" in the center. No retry or cancel button to push, and the iPhone just showed a "slide for emergency" slider. For the heck of it, I tried clicking on the iTunes store icon, then clicked back on the iPhone icon, after which it then proceeded to complete the initialization. Not exactly intuitive.

44 NYC_Mike  Thu, Jun 18, 2009 7:23:27am

Had no problems installing OS3 last night. One of the best features is something I don't hear a lot of talk about - the auto wifi log on feature. Now I don't have to spend time waiting for a text message every morning to log onto the free wifi at Starbucks. If you've signed on to a wifi network before Iphone OS 3 now will automatically log you on when that wifi network is detected.

Also although it's a small thing - thanks for the voice record feature. I was using "You Note Lite" to do that because I tend to drop quick voice notes to myself all the time.

And the cut/copy/paste is long overdue but a much appreciated upgrade.

And it may just be my imagination, but the phone seems quicker, especially SMS, email and safari. When ATT (ugh) finally turns on MMS later this summer, THEN I'll be really happy.

Favorite apps:

Bloomberg - great info, great interface,
The Weather Channel - love the video forecasts
Stanza book reader ( I haven't been "Kindel-ized" yet)
TwitterFon (if you Tweet)
AOL Radio (free stations from all over the country)
FlyCast (it's almost like free satellite radio for the iphone)
iShred/ iShredLE - THE guitar playing app if you can play guitar

CannonGame
iBowl
Snooth (wine info)
Yelp
Now PLaying

45 infopimp  Thu, Jun 18, 2009 10:02:42am

OK... thanks a LOT astronmr20 - I stayed up until 3AM playing that game, its like Fieldrunners on steroids!

Thanks again.

46 spankerfish  Thu, Jun 18, 2009 11:36:24am

i'm really looking forward the the iPhone stepping into 1999 "sometime this summer" by allowing MMS.
