Such an incredible photographer.

Thanks for all you do Mr. Yon and as always, stay safe.

4 Sharmuta  Mon, Sep 14, 2009 2:59:39pm

Some of the photos of the landscape remind me of the Nile River- how the agriculture follows the river. Which only makes sense- water is life.

The Pedro commander, Major Mathew Wenthe, said that Secretary of Defense Robert Gates had issued a directive that all casualties be evacuated and arrive at the hospital within one hour of the call. Pedros intend to fulfill that directive.

Pedros for President!

I guess not.

great pics, but I agree with the comment about the red cross heli. Is that required by Geneva Conv.?To paint a red cross on white background, the symbol of the Crusaders, on a heli with limited miniguns and fly over the Talis and alQueda, is insane.

I'm more concerned with their defense. Lots of leadership gone in the last 6 months.
They may score 45 points a game, but I hope they don't give up 46

IF (big if there) they have any defensive presence, they may avenge the one loss season in the Super Bowl with a 0 loss championship one

(they owe me one!!)!!!

Obama Clarifies Position on Tort Reform on "60 Minutes"

In his speech before Congress last week, President Obama attempted to win Republican support for his health care overhaul by agreeing to consider including medical malpractice reform in his plan. In an interview that aired on CBS' "60 Minutes" on Sunday the president shed some more light on what he meant -- and in which form he will not accept tort reform. (Read the transcript of the president's interview here.)

Mr. Obama on Sunday clarified that he is so far not willing to consider capping malpractice judgments, a reform proposal consistently put forward by Republicans.

/in other words, he's not really serious about tort reform, it was just lip service

Today's WSJ editorial is on point. It's important to win this war, and that will take more troops. Winning is possible though not a cinch, and the recipe for winning is to keep in mind that it's a bad idea to bring a knife to a gunfight.
Yon is going to earn a Pullitzer. Whether the powers that be award it or not, that's another question. We'll see.

As to the war itself:

The Taliban aren't going to give us the luxury of fighting a technological war. They can read, at least, some of them can, and Ho Chi Minh, Mao Zedong, Vassily Chuikov, and so on have evidently been on their reading list.

There is much to know about counterinsurgency warfare, as well. The main goal is to bring security to the people living in zones you more or less control, and then extend that to where everybody who is halfway inclined to take your side or to go with the flow, can safely cooperate.

A handful of extremely well equipped warriors can wreak enormous destruction on an identifiable enemy. But to get to know people, get good at reading the local mood, put patrols out everywhere so that the other side cannot maneuver safely, yet permit civilians to move their goats from field to field, this takes manpower.
