Barrett Brown Gets the Collateral Smear

Blogosphere • Views: 3,315

In the ongoing smear campaign against yours truly, the waterheads of the wingnut blogosphere are constantly trying to find some way to accuse me of having stopped supporting Israel, or even better from their warped perspective, to accuse me of being an antisemite.

Sure, it’s completely disconnected from reality, but what else is new?

The latest smear initiative appears to be to attack Barrett Brown, since I’ve been linking to him and am involved in his “Project PM.” Barrett has an amusing post about it: BREAKING: I am a ‘Jew Hater,’ Apparently.

Does this in anyway correlate to the hate mail you earlier alluded to?

Barrett manages to amuse on a consistent basis, even when soliciting for funds. I was just reading about Project PM.

You’ll also get a lot of bang for your buck in terms of the marginal utility of your patronage, as I am extraordinarily frugal, even Spartan insomuch as that I spend a lot of time sitting around without a shirt on, or pants, or more than one sock. I smoke Top rolling tobacco, which goes for around $3 a package and is sold in many prison commissaries. I eat oatmeal for breakfast rather than endangered condor eggs dipped in wasabi-infused veal compote like Christopher Hitchens does. Anyway, the tobacco is necessary for my work.

...(H)e (RSM) also criticized the media for playing up the perils of teen pregnancy, weirdly noting that Henry Tudor was the result of a teen pregnancy by Margaret Beaufort while ignoring that most teenage girls do not have such resources as one receives by virtue of being among the ruling family that controls a large portion of the British Isles.

4 SanFranciscoZionist  Thu, Apr 8, 2010 1:20:43pm

(T)herein, he suggests that teen pregnancy reduction programs be targeted only at blacks and Hispanics, who of course have never managed to produce a Henry Tudor.

As a Jew, I'm sick of having accusations of antisemitism thrown around this lightly. Even besides the point that the charge against Charles and Barrett is completely false, people seem to use "anti-Semite" as a general term of abuse.

Given that hard-right parties are arising in Europe right now, even though they're pretending to be quite pro-Jewish, I don't think we should be watering down the term right now.

Speaking of degrees of separation from Justin Raimondo, Raimondo writes for Taki’s Magazine. You know who else writes for Taki’s Magazine? Robert Stacy McCain!

And do you know what Taki is? A frenzied batshit Jew-hater.

The anti-Charles people have been gleefully predicting that he will turn on Israel at any moment for well over a year. I don't totally understand what this signifies to them, but it's important for them to make it happen.

Would Henry Tudor have amounted to anything more than a serial pedophile if he hadn't been born into the royal family?

Has anyone here read Phillipa Gregory's Boleyn series? The Boleyn, Seymour and other "noble" families were nothing but a bunch of hardcore pimps.

Hard right parties in Europe; ongoing real and tangible anti-Semitism here in the US, and a UN that is predisposed to anti-Israel/anti-Semitism on a regular basis.

Well, I'm a Richard III gal, so my sympathy for Henry Tudor is reasonably low.

RSM is correct in that teenage (and pre-teen) young women got married and had babies all the time in days of yore, however, this is totally irrelevent to a modern society trying to keep down its teenage pregnancy rate.

I'm not even talking about that. I'm talking about the antisemite charge being thrown around, as it is here, completely divorced from any reason except "This guy talked to a guy who is antisemitic".

It's like people are trying to make an equivalence between having an antagonistic relationship with someone and having a friendly relationship with someone. That's a pretty important distinction

I don't think it's even that nuanced. Most of these yahoos know little about actual Israeli policy, and favor policy that's well to the right of what any Israeli government is actually willing to consider. For most of these folks, Israel is simply a surrogate U.S., another nation to derive a sense of self-worth from supporting, and a proxy 'good guy' in the fight against the Muslim world.

hehe No. Of the 5 lines that did, that wasn't one of them. My husband calls me a purist. I hated the movie.

Anyhoo, I get a little pissy when someone criticizes Israeli policy and is called an anti-Semite (or worse if that's possible). It's happened here to a few posters who still post. You absolutely can criticize Israeli policy and not be a Jew hater and it's not all that nuanced either. You don't think Jews in Israel argue among themselves about poilcy? Give me a break.

When you start saying things that the Jews don't belong there or they stole the land or whatnot, THAT is anti-Semitsm.

re: #30 Alouette

There are people who criticize the Israeli government and mean exactly what they say-- the object to the Israeli government's policies or methods. And a lot of these people are actually Israeli, as well.

It is entirely true that lots of people cover for antisemitism by claiming they're only attacking Israel-- normally while holding Israel to a special standard no European country is asked to meet-- but there are honest, legitimate critics of Israeli policy.

41 What, me worry?  Thu, Apr 8, 2010 1:56:38pm

One thing that fascinates me is when people who oppose pretty much all 'entitlement programs' in the U.S. will get huffy if I say that I believe the extreme haredi communities in Israel have become too dependent on government handouts. Some of these folks aren't even Jewish, but they'll hang in there insisting that there can't be anything bad about the government supporting families where no one works--as long as they're Jews in the Middle East.

Probably not anti-Semitic, just really, really naive.

Those borders ceased to be operative when the Arabs crossed them to try and destroy Israel. Israel won. Spoils of war. It's one thing I still agree with Donald Rumsfeld on.

Can you imagine if the Germans were still whining about Poles and Russians building houses in East Prussia after losing that territory 65 years ago in a war of aggression?

But as always, one rule for the rest of the world, another for Israel.

Heh. And he compares me to "that Russell Crowe" character from "A Beautiful Mind," apparently failing to understand that this character was based on a Nobel Prize-winning mathematician, John Nash, who was renowned for his math genius and his ability to solve problems no one else could.

What this fool took away from the movie was that the character was nuts, and missed the fact that Nash suffered from schizophrenia, as many true geniuses have. Pathetic.

Well, I guess it comes back to Barak's point. If they continue to take land, which includes the Arab populations then they either have to allow them full citizenship and voting rights or effectively have a form of apartheid. If they are given full rights then sooner or later Arabs will outnumber Jews and it will cease to be a Jewish state. I believe a two state solution is the least worst solution, so continuing to expand the '67 borders will make that harder if not impossible.

What this fool took away from the movie was that the character was nuts, and missed the fact that Nash suffered from schizophrenia, as many true geniuses have. Pathetic.

Curious as to your view of Andrew Sullivan on the matter. He's been getting the antisemite label thrown at him a lot lately.

And as per my own views... Is it antisemitic to believe that there should be a settlement freeze outside of '67 borders? I'm pretty much of the views of Ehud Barak. Besides that they are their own sovereign country and can do what they please. The middle east and the world is better off with their continued existence and prosperity.

That part of Israeli policy gets a little stickier. Why would someone not support Israel building on their own land? Actually I think it comes from a lot of ignorance. People don't know which areas they're talking about.

Settlement is the wrong word. These are not settlements. They are Jewish towns with schools and groceries, houses and industry. They number about 200,000 people total. They are not even disputed territories. They were never on the negotiating table. They were never offered to the Arabs.

Here's a good article showing the Arab and Jewish neighborhoods in Jerusalem and a few debunking of myths regarding "settlements."

If only I could give you more updings for that one! The White Supremacists constantly say that they are not anti-Semites (some of their best friends ARE Jewish). I have been fighting against these people blinded by hate on gold chat boards for years. They pound away that The Rothschilds control almost all of the wealth in the world and Jews have started all the wars, etc. ARRRRRGH!!! It is unfortunate that Goldman Sachs has turned itself into a sociopathic organization with underhanded banking practices and outright fraud. This story will continue to surface as time goes on. The heavy Jewish presence of Jews on the Board of the Federal Reserve drives the wingnuts into a frenzy of Jew hatred. So, a few Jews making huge amounts of money on Wall Street has fueled radical rightwing hatred of all things Jewish and Israeli. These opinions are WORLD wide, not just North American.

Moreover, the press doesn't bother to find out, either. This strikes me as being for two main reasons:

1. The news agency sees 'the story' as the tensions in negotiating and in 'the violence'. Trying to explain things is seen as not needed to draw in viewers.

2. The news agency wants to focus on pressuring Israel. If they actually explain the situation truthfully, the Arabs often become angry and will cut the agency off from access. At worst the might target the agency's members for terror. Israel can be pushed at safely. This is a kind of Stockholm Syndrome.

On that topic - There are 7 6 "Millennium Problems" with a prize of $1,000,000 each for solving them. Recently, the Poincare conjecture was solved/proven but the Russian who proved it, Grigori Perelman turned down the million dollars that was officially offered to him just two weeks ago because he is, to paraphrase, unhappy and bothered by fame and his disillusionment with the lack of ethics in the professional world of mathematics and has quit mathematics entirely. He is said to live at home with his mother and plays ping pong in his basement. I picked up the book The Millennium Problems on a whim at an airport and was very excited to hear of Perelman's accomplishment. My current avatar is the complex plane of one of the other Millennium Problems.

re: #40 Obdicut

There are people who criticize the Israeli government and mean exactly what they say-- the object to the Israeli government's policies or methods. And a lot of these people are actually Israeli, as well.

It is entirely true that lots of people cover for antisemitism by claiming they're only attacking Israel-- normally while holding Israel to a special standard no European country is asked to meet-- but there are honest, legitimate critics of Israeli policy.

Of course you're absolutely correct. I don't think there is a Zionist alive who hasn't criticized some Israeli policy or other. But genuine criticism of Israeli policy is always specific about which particular policy they disagree with.

My point is, that anti-Semites will hide behind "criticism of Israeli policy" as an excuse, but when you ask them to name a policy, they will likely say "Israeli apartheid" or "Israel committing genocide" or "settlements" (as though "settlements" are the equivalent of "Apartheid" and "genocide").

The college kids in Athens keep supporting and generating good rock bands. The ATL (please don't call it hotlanta) has a very vibrant R&B and Rap scene. It is a good place to be if you are in a pop/rock/R&B kind of groove. We're also ramping up our Hollywood East status with lots of new films. The latest Miley Cyrus film was shot in Savannah. I don't know who came up with the meme that the 1949 cease-fire lines are holy borders and that peace will erupt once Israel retreats behind them.

Using the 1949 ceasefire lines to split Jerusalem and prevent normal population expansion like every other city in the world, just because the Jordanian Legion had the city surrounded and there was only one road, the western road, going in and out of Jerusalem, may or may not be anti-Semitism but it is freaking delusional, and will not bring peace.

Can you imagine if the Germans were still whining about Poles and Russians building houses in East Prussia after losing that territory 65 years ago in a war of aggression?

But as always, one rule for the rest of the world, another for Israel.

I green-hearted your post. Nana will have a seizure.

New Study: Race plays large role in Tea Party anger

The University of Washington completed a survery of the tea party movement and came up with some interesting findings.

"The tea party is not just about politics and size of government. The data suggests it may also be about race,"said Christopher Parker, a UW assistant professor of political science who directed the survey.
...
It found that those who are racially resentful, who believe the U.S. government has done too much to support blacks, are 36 percent more likely to support the tea party than those who are not.

Indeed, strong support for the tea party movement results in a 45 percent decline in support for health care reform compared with those who oppose the tea party. "While it's clear that the tea party in one sense is about limited government, it's also clear from the data that people who want limited government don't want certain services for certain kinds of people. Those services include health care," Parker said.

New Study: Race plays large role in Tea Party anger

New study : Religion plays Role in Racial Prejudice

WACO, Texas (ABP) -- More than 50 years after Martin Luther King Jr. lamented that 11 o'clock Sunday morning is the most segregated hour in America, a Baylor University study suggests that religion itself may be a contributing factor in racial prejudice.

The study, published in the journal Social Psychological and Personality Science, found that people subliminally "primed" with Christian words reported more negative attitudes about African-Americans than those primed with neutral words.
Wade Rowatt

"What's interesting about this study is that it shows some component of religion does lead to some negative evaluations of people based on race," said Wade Rowatt, associate professor of psychology and neuroscience at Baylor, who led the study. "We just don't know why."

Newer study: water still wet.

Interesting figures... do the math

He directed the Multi-State Survey of Race and Politics, a broad look at race relations and politics in contemporary America. The survey reached 1,015 residents of Nevada, Michigan, Missouri, Ohio, North Carolina, Georgia and California. All were battleground states in the 2008 presidential election with the exception of California, which was included in the survey to represent the West Coast.

The survey found that 30 percent of respondents had never heard of the tea party, but among those who had, 32 percent strongly approved of it. In that group, 56 percent of Republicans strongly approved, 31 percent of independents strongly approved and 5 percent of Democrats strongly approved.

Among whites who approved, 35 percent said they believe blacks to be hardworking, 45 percent said they believe them intelligent and 41 percent said they believe them trustworthy.

Whites who disapprove of President Barack Obama, the survey found, are 55 percent more likely to support the tea party than those who say they approve of him.

"Are we in a post-racial society? Our survey indicates a resounding no,"Parker said.

Lots of polite but obviously racist concern trolling guys pop up here to give cover to confederacy wackos, and they still get dinged down 20 times.

Touche...but trolls don't count as "people" in my book! ;)

Ha.
I did follow you back!
Then we somehow got disconnected.
anyhoo- I use FB to keep up with folks, all my peeps from HS are there, plus there are photos and, well, you can sort of have a "conversation".
Much more satisfactory, IMO.

I am a FB whore so you don't have to sell me on which is better.

I got a notice that this person was following me - I assumed it was Cato.
My very very big mistake. Now it is blocked. I am truly the most gullible damned person on the face of the earth.

Someone did the same thing to me, twitter account using my real name, and mynameLizard, posting really vile things about Charles and many others. Gus 802 found it.

Honestly, I find it bizarre, weird, strange... makes no sense... to follow you. They don't like the cookbook?

No! No!! Noooooo!!!!!!

I mean for real. Reine is great. She's more a conservative than a liberal, I would think. We've certainly gone a few rounds! But she's always debated smartly and honestly and she's a genuinely nice person. I guess I just see someone more controversial as a target for their ire.

Believe it or not:
I've gotten a few nasty comments at the cookbook blog. They have to go thru me before they're posted, so they never get posted.

Weird, eh?

That free-floating anger makes about as much sense as road rage. There are lots of people who have to take their anger out on any random target.

lol Now this sounds like a good story I missed.

I have a Cuban g/f who despises cilantro. I told her how much it perplexes me.

This is like being back in middle school (Jr. High to you Northerners) with the He said/She said controversies and petty scandals.

I guess I cannot be trusted to make up my own mind as to what is relevant or not, I'm just a poor brainwashed lizardbot now who has been completely brainwashed by Charle's forceful charisma.

To the haters I just want to say:

1.) I post here because I want to, I do not agree with everything that is said here but I am also aware that I am required to reply like an adult when I disagree.

2.) "goodbye cruel site" posts burning your bridges are for children or Ideologues, and I cannot see any reason to trust either one's judgment or statements.

3.) Political partisanship at the expense of the overall welfare of the country is a bad thing Mmmkay?

4.) If you have some (even small) amount of discernment and intelligence it is not necessary for you to believe in every single word that is posted on a site in order to post there and argue the issues there.

5.) You are actively confining yourself to live in an "echo chamber" by ignoring the above points. You will only ever hear from people who agree with you 100%, and people who always respond just as you do to every conceived affront.

6.) Isn't this exactly what you accuse Charles of creating here at LGF? Well isn't it? Yet you voluntarily consign yourself to live within the narrow and censored view that you falsely accuse Charles of creating here.

7.) WTF are you thinking? Really, I mean that in the nicest and least judgemental way, but doesn't reality have to trump partisanship at some point?

234 Our Precious Bodily Fluids  Thu, Apr 8, 2010 5:00:27pm

Having read some of Barrett Brown's material via links from LGF, I added his blog to my (ever-expanding, completely unmanageable at this point) RSS library.

Mission accomplished, wingnuts. You've won him another reader. Or is that not what you intended?
