Tech Note: Bottlenecks Caused By Bottom Feeders

Running a site like LGF with a custom-designed content management system is a constant process of finding and opening bottlenecks. If you’re lucky, the bottlenecks result from an easily addressed database design problem.

Tonight I discovered a bandwidth bottleneck that negatively affected every page served by the hamsters in our web server: our “blacklist” of spammer websites that try to insert their URL’s into our logs. These spammers are the true bottom feeders of the Internet spam world, but their bone-headed persistence makes them just enough of a significant pain in the ass that special measures are called for.

When the MySQL table for our blacklist was originally designed, we accessed it with a query that used the LIKE operator to search for matches to the spammer list, like this:

SELECT badref FROM badrefs WHERE badref LIKE '$searchterm' LIMIT 1

Today Stinky Beaumont and I realized that this check for a blacklisted spammer was beginning to take way too much time, because the LIKE operator doesn’t scale well when the table gets larger. Thankfully, MySQL provides a much better option: a FULLTEXT lookup. So I re-indexed the blacklist table, and changed the code that checks for blacklisted referrers to this:

SELECT badref FROM badrefs WHERE MATCH(badref) AGAINST('$searchterm') LIMIT 1

Bam. Things are noticeably snappier. MySQL’s generic “LIKE” operator is fine for smaller searches, but once you have thousands of possible search targets, the FULLTEXT features of MySQL are a much better option.

We now return you to our regularly scheduled Incomprehensible Techie Open Thread.

I get "comment spam" on my blog, which consists of posting like "I love this blog! Keep up the good work!" and signed "Prada Bags" "Cheap Viagra" etc. etc.

I delete and block these bogus comments and report them to Typepad.

Referrer log spammers are just {bad word}

Speaking of technology... I have a hard time buying the validity of this:

Teens Now Getting High Off 'Digital Drugs'

MUSTANG, Oklahoma – I-dosing on "digital drugs" is becoming an alarming new trend amongst teens.

Web sites are luring kids with free downloads of "digital drugs," which are audio files designed to induce drug-like effects. The sites claim it is a safe and legal way to get high, but parents fear it could lead to illegal drug use.

Videos of teenagers trying digital drugs are all over YouTube, leaving parents, educators and law enforcement officials with the Oklahoma Bureau of Narcotics and Dangerous Drugs concerned.

I can not believe that calls into Databases in the next couple of years will not just explode..Oracle owns effen javascript..In a few years 16 yr old's will create table views into complex databases with simple Javascript calls..Cause you know..Oracle owns it..Plus MySQL.. mmmm.. Who owns the code..*cough*
I'd like to bring PL/SQL to the javascript level..

Somewhere, a pastor is banging his head on his desk, and wondering how this all went so very wrong.

ABBEY: He feels the homily lacked panache.

BARTLET: It did lack panache.

ABBEY: It was a perfectly lovely homily on Ephesians 5:21. "Husbands, love your wives, as Christ loved the church and gave himself up for her."

BARTLET: Yeah. She's skipping over the part that says, "Wives, be subject to your husbands as to the Lord, for a husband is the head of a wife as Christ is the head of the church."

ABBEY: I do skip over that part.

CHARLIE: Why?

ABBEY: Because it's stupid!

CHARLIE: Okay.

ABBEY : "Husbands, love your wives as Christ loved the church and gave himself up for her, that he might sanctify her, having cleansed her by washing of water with the word that he might present the Church to himself in..." something.

BARTLET: [behind his desk, puts on glasses] "In splendor." And I have no problem with Ephesians. And any time you want me to cleanse you with the washing of water, you know I'm up for it.

ABBEY: Then what is your problem?

I realize there is very little incentive for you to deal with the inevitable headaches that this would entail, but if you were to spin out LGF's codebase as an open source project I think it would be immediately competitive with wordpress and drupal. You may have noticed that Dave Winer is building a new CMS from scratch (scripting2.com) and the debate raging over the GPL between @photomatt and @pearsonified (which may lead to the first real lawsuit test of the GPL in court). There's clearly room on the field for a new CMS system to compete with the old bioys, which is exactly how wordpress got started.

Again, I fully realize that this would be a gigantic commitment with very little (short term) reward. But there's a potential future where LGF code becomes pluggable, themeable, and extensible. It would be great to see that future realized.

It's hard to think of weird food that's kosher. Sheep's head, and boiled fish head.

It's actually a tradition to eat a sheep's head or a fish head on Rosh Hashanah. The least gross option is to put a smoked chub on the table.

Wait'll you see the real wedding pictures, speaking of cute.

For example, when I broke the glass-- my non-Jewish friends who chose the glass didn't realize it's supposed to be a lightbulb or something thin like that. They put a damn lowball glass in the bag! So I could feel my first stomp didn't get it, so, overachiever I am, I smashed it with like four more huge stamping wallops. The photographer assured me she got good pictures of that.

LOL.
Can't wait to see 'em.

Charles, I just closed Chrome, as it had become unresponsive (had several tabs open) and opened Firefox (3.6.6) on my laptop (Vista).

I have 2 tabs open right now. One is my router, other is LGF. Just refreshed, and TCPView is reporting:
Endpoints: 201
Established: 20
Listening: 17
Time Wait: 117
Close Wait: 4

Those numbers seem kinda high. After a few minutes:
Endpoints: 64
Established: 6
Listening: 17
Time Wait: 0
Close Wait: 3

The numbers go way high again on refresh. Admittedly, I've been having significant connectivity issues in last month or so; very few before. (Had about 8 reconnects in the course of posting this; 58 since rebooting router a few hours ago.)

Verizon has been pushing FIOS in this area for several months, and I have DSL. Hmm.

We had a proper breaking glass, but my husband's first stomp didn't quite get it--it cracked, and sort of shot out of its envelope.

Later, during the reception, we snuck back into the room where the ceremony was held, and he stomped that sucker flat.

Write a function to strip the numbers from this string of text and numbers.

I'd had him write a function for me on something he claimed to be expert on before her, and he said he usually copies from a list of functions he uses and pastes...so he wasn't going to get hired anyway. After 12 years working with a product, you should be able to write simple functions off the top of your head.

Okay...but for the record, live ales are unpasteurized, not pressurized, and called 'live' because they use isinglass (which comes from fish bladders) to capture the yeast and drag it to the bottom of the barrel. Usually it's hand-pumped...and oh so delicious.

A glass is now placed on the floor, and the chatan shatters it with his foot. This serves as an expression of sadness at the destruction of the Temple in Jerusalem, and identifies the couple with the spiritual and national destiny of the Jewish people. A Jew, even at the moment of greatest rejoicing, is mindful of the Psalmist's injunction to "set Jerusalem above my highest joy."

The main elements of the lagering method used by Sedlmayr and Groll are still used today, and depend on a slow acting yeast that ferments at a low temperature while being stored.

Sedlmayr is from Spaten in Munich. Groll copied him and made Pilsner Urquell.

SM Police Officer Recovering After Horrific Crash

Dayam. Check out the car:

Image: after-horrific-crash.jpg

Cops, God bless 'em. We just had a police fatality here in Chicago. Some dick grabbed the cop's gun and shot him. They got the perp, but the cop sounded like a stand-up guy. He did a lot of training for new 5-0.

1,600 gather to celebrate life of fallen cop

Some 1,600 people — including Gov. Pat Quinn and Mayor Richard Daley — filed into the University of Chicago's Rockefeller Memorial Chapel on Thursday to celebrate the life of the officer who was shot to death in a police parking lot July 7.

A few years ago, Soderberg received a call about a kid who had tried to steal a belt from a Target store, Loudon recalled.

Soderberg sat the boy down and asked him why he did it. When he replied he needed it to hold up his pants, Soderberg bought the kid the belt, convinced the store manager not to press charges and then gave him a ride home.

"He knew that we change the world every day that we live in it," said Loudon, who wore her husband's favorite dress to the service. "And he knew that our choices meant we changed it for better or we changed it for worse."

Luck may be a major component, but you don't keep the attention of a woman like that by being a shitty husband. You're obviously doing something right.

I try...it takes a sense of humor...but fortunately, she's got a strong one of those herself.

Just recently in a nearby town, someone defaced a memorial for local officers who died in the line of duty. It apparently was motivated by a recent trial verdict in Oakland, a town more that two hundred miles from here.

I hope they catch the bastard.

It's easy to hate on cops, cowardly even in some cases. Hell, I'll hate on the ones that fuck up. But they are no different than any other human demographic, with good and bad in their ranks.

A blanket bias against cops is just as wrong and stupid as a blanket bias against races, religions, etc.

Well, I wouldn't go that far. But the craven bastard(s) should answer for his/her/their crime of vandalism.

OK, so I exaggerated a bit. Still, I agree that the vandal should be caught and prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law.

S'all good. It was a stupid, pointless crime. They are reviewing surveillance footage for evidence. They'll get the fucker eventually.

Though late to the party, I want to add a sincere thank you to Charles. I use an older computer. The change in speed of operation is very obvious. As a result I'll check in more often instead of just leaving in frustration.
