Senate GOP Posts Fake Tweets Pretending to Be From Democratic Leaders

Clueless, crass, and clumsy
Politics • Views: 47,264

The National Republican Senatorial Committee has hit on a creative way to use Twitter for political purposes — by posting fake retweets pretending to be from Democrats, along with a link to a website called “demsplanforamerica.com” that is nothing but a blank page. Get it?

The GOP: always finding new ways to be crass.

It took them two and a half years to come up with this? Man, the GOP really is on the short bus to nowhere.

The problem some will believe these are 100% genuine Democratic Tweets, and no amount of technical explanation will change their minds. They’ll get forwarded and re-tweeted and gain provenance with each retelling.

(I spend about an hour explaining to my current Piano teacher that the email she received from YouTube stating that her latest submission to YouTube violated their decency policy didn’t actually come from YouTube, and that the whole thing was a ruse to get her to click on a link. I think she still believes her account was “hacked.”)

22 allegro  Mon, Jun 20, 2011 9:20:36am

What I find the most annoying is that it so very juvenile. Amanda Marcotte talked about this in her post about Netroots Nation and the conservative Right Online Conference that was held at the same time about next door:

because there’s something about being conservative that requires being childish and petulant.

That sums up so much of the wingnut attitude right there. How many times do we hear “I love it! It pisses off the left!” regardless of the importance of the topic. This childishness has been increasingly devolving the discussion, making it impossible to communicate on any realistic level. These little Nyah! Nyah! games are stupid anything but adorable.

Me neither, I’m 42 and prefer slippahs and Hawaiian shirts. But if I wanted to I could be so much more immature than that.

I could be much more crass as well. The difference is my crassness is meant to entertain, not a serious method of communicating or advocating for a particular party or candidate.

But that’s why I’m me, and Breitbart is Breitbart. This just reeks of Breitbart.

How states are rigging the 2012 election

…In Texas, for example, the law allows concealed handgun licenses as identification but not student IDs. And guess what? Nationwide exit polls show that John McCain carried households in which someone owned a gun by 25 percentage points but lost voters in households without a gun by 32 points.

Besides Texas, states that enacted voter ID laws this year include Kansas, Wisconsin, South Carolina and Tennessee. Indiana and Georgia already had such requirements. The Maine Legislature voted to end same-day voter registration. Florida seems determined to go back to the chaos of the 2000 election. It shortened the early voting period, effectively ended the ability of registered voters to correct their address at the polls and imposed onerous restrictions on organized voter-registration drives.

I started watching a C-SPAN this morning. The head of the National Chamber of Commerces gave a wonderful speech to open a governors conference on what the States are doing about jobs.

Fox News sticking to Q’Daffy propaganda….
Libya: NATO Airstrike Kills 15 West of Tripoli

NATO, which has a mandate to protect Libyan civilians, has rejected the Libyan government’s allegations that it targets civilians. However, mistakes have occurred.

The alliance acknowledged that one of its airstrikes on Sunday accidentally struck a residential neighborhood in the capital, killing civilians.

Meanwhile in the real world,,,,
Libyan regime: 15 dead in airstrike on compound

A NATO spokesman confirmed to CBS News that the alliance did strike a “command and control node” in the area but only after “rigorous analysis and conducted persistent information surveillance reconnaissance over a prolonged time in that area” had shown it be a government structure.

“I cannot comment on the reports of civilian casualties,” the spokesman told CBS News. “We watched it for a very long time. Based on this surveillance, we knew it was being used as a command and control center.”

GOP too extreme for the Tea Party….
Florida Tea Party Leader: GOP Medicare Plan A ‘Public Policy Nightmare’

In an email to fellow Tea Partiers last week, obtained by The Palm Beach Post, Wilkinson called the GOP plan a “public policy nightmare” that could trigger “huge Democratic wins in 2012,” and prompt Republicans to blame the Tea Party for their losses.

“Republicans will lose if they support the Ryan Medicare plan. Americans do not support the [Paul] Ryan plan,” he wrote. “Expect the GOP to then blame the Tea Party for losses.”

Some of the dingbats on the boat:

AMY GOODMAN: Kathy Kelly, can you talk about who’s on your ship alone, about 50 people—Alice Walker, the well-known writer, author of Color Purple, Ray McGovern, former CIA top briefer for President George H.W. Bush when he was vice president at the time—who else?

KATHY KELLY: Well, I’ve certainly been impressed with the work of Ann Wright. She’s criss-crossed the country since having been involved with previous efforts to enter Gaza, and has entered Gaza in the past, along with Medea Benjamin. And there’s been a tremendous effort on the part of many organizers.

AMY GOODMAN: Ann Wright, the colonel, who quit over the wars, and Medea Benjamin, co-founder of CodePink.

KATHY KELLY: That’s right. And then, from Illinois, where I’m from, Robert Naiman, who coordinates Just Foreign Policy. Hedy Epstein, who has repeatedly gone over to Gaza, and her parents had been killed during the Holocaust. I think the makeup of people on the ship represents a broad sector of the U.S. peace movement. One of my close friends, just graduated from Beloit College, Max Suchan, he’ll also be on the boat. But we want the focus to be on people in Gaza. We’re very, very conscious of how people in Gaza have been subjected to privation, to an inability to move on with their lives. You’ve got a younger generation that’s never known anything other than being trapped inside of a punitive situation. So the focus should most especially be on our Gazan friends.

Amish kids using mobile phones to get their Facebook fix, the elders are not amused

For IntoMobile readers the idea of living a life without a top of the line smartphone connected to a 4G network is about as welcoming as poking one’s eyes out. For Amish people however, they’ve made a lifestyle choice to not only live without mobile phones, but also without cars, electricity, and other such technologies that all of us associate with a modern way of living. Kids will be kids however, and some Amish youths are breaking the rules of their communities by not only getting a mobile phone, but using them to interact on social networks. There are an estimated “several hundred” Amish kids on Facebook from Lancaster County, which equates to between 1% and 2% of the population; they’re obviously the rebels.

The U.S. should certainly prosecute them if they violate any laws.

And if they do any stunts like burning the American Flag (a la R*chel C*rrie) on a foreign nation’s soil, they should be tried for treason. (I always thought C*rrie should have been tried posthumously.)

I’m pretty sure that isn’t treason. I don’t like seeing folks burning the flag, but I’m glad they have the freedom to burn it.

Megan Fox Fired From ‘Transformers’ for Comparing Director to Hitler

It’s never a good idea to compare your boss to Hitler — even more so when his boss is Steven Spielberg.

Actress Megan Fox apparently learned this lesson the hard way, getting fired from one of Hollywood’s most popular film franchises after likening the series’ director, Michael Bay, to the Nazi dictator.

In an interview with England’s Daily Mail, Bay — currently ramping up publicity for the third “Transformers” movie — claims that Spielberg reacted furiously to Fox’s comments, in which she said, “[Bay] wants to be like Hitler on his sets, and he is.”

According to Bay, Spielberg, an executive producer of the “Transformers” movies, directed him to “fire her right now” — a move that was initially portrayed as a decision by Fox to leave the series. She has been replaced in the third “Transformers” movie by Rosie Huntington-Whitley, best known previously for her work as a Victoria’s Secret model.

Actually, yes, I’d rather receive nothing at all. $2.50 is an insult.

In my case, I wouldn’t have sued. The company had a rogue employee. No new law was needed; a jail term was needed.

An insult compared to what - being right and never proving it, or having anything to show for it? People can be right all damned day in the sanctity of their own homes, but proving it in court is a whole ‘nother ball of wax. It takes money. It takes good legal representation. After that, it takes the right judge and jury, and a whole lot of luck. Being right is the smallest part of the equation.

This shit doesn’t get decided on its own by truthseekers and young idealists out of law school. It takes hard core representation, a lot of fact-finding and negotiation, expert witnesses, interrogatories, and a whole bunch of other stuff that costs bales and piles and stacks of money (most individuals don’t have) to accomplish.

Blame the ref: Gladiator’s 1800 year old epitaph revealed

A Roman gladiator’s tombstone blames the ref for his fatal battle, according to a historian who decoded the 1,800-year-old epitaph.

“After breaking my opponent Demetrius I did not kill him immediately,” reads the epitaph of a fighter named Diodorus. “Fate and the cunning treachery of the summa rudis [referee] killed me.”

The tombstone, which depicts a gladiator holding two swords, standing above a surrendering opponent, was decoded by Michael Carter, a professor at Brock University in St. Catharines, Canada. Carter said that, unlike popular conception, gladiator fights had intricate rules and did not always result in one combatant’s death.
