Mitt Romney Supports the GOP’s War on Women

Romney shows who’s boss
Politics • Views: 36,579

In case you had any remaining doubt about how much Mitt Romney will pander to the social conservative right wing in order to get the Republican nomination, tonight he’s coming out in support of the anti-contraception Blunt amendment.

One day before a critical Senate vote that could loom large as a 2012 election issue, Mitt Romney came out for a congressional Republican measure designed to roll back the Obama administration’s requirement that employer health plans cover birth control.

“Governor Romney supports the Blunt Bill because he believes in a conscience exemption in health care for religious institutions and people of faith,” Romney spokesperson Andrea Saul told TPM.

The Blunt amendment, which is scheduled for a Senate vote on Thursday, would permit employers to deny coverage of birth control or other services they deem morally objectionable.

Can I support an exemption that keeps Mitt Romney far away from the White House as possible?

2 Mocking Jay  Wed, Feb 29, 2012 7:20:31pm

He was against it before he was for it.

Well, you can't win a general without first winning a primary. But, uh, it's not like passing a video game level, Mitt. You don't get to recharge your health and ammo.

Perhaps play a little more (pardon the expression) conservatively.

This is very clear pandering to the religious right. Even now, Mitt needs them, and will need them in the general election.

I am not surprised by this at all. Indeed, I'm wondering why he took so long - was he awaiting some returns from pollsters?

Except that they hate him for being Mormon, and therefore not a "real Christian". And for Obamacare. And for being a flip-flopping patrician Masshole.

This is just another "severely conservative" moment. Few people are going to believe he's sincere at all.

The Blunt Amendment doesn't just roll back Obama's plan. It would nullify a 2000 EEOC rule that all non-religious employers have to provide contraception coverage in their health plans. That 2000 decision wasn't challenged by the Bush Administration during its 8 years, and it wasn't controversial until a few weeks ago when the GOPers in Congress decided to go "full retard" on women's reproductive rights.

In a story that is not totally off topic, I see the CBS news website has picked up this story I mentioned yesterday:

Possible earliest evidence of Christianity resurrected from ancient tomb

I also flagged the story as being "sticky".

One reason I have a very wary eye at this story is because of the people involve, including Simcha Jacobovici, who is pictured at that CBS article. Jacobovici has history, a history that isn't so flattering from an academic view. Jacobovici is a sensationalist, last getting fame from the now well known (due to Jacobovici's promotion efforts) "Jesus" tomb, which he turned into a film as well as a book. He has pushed some strange ideas in the past, all to promote something or other. Indeed, that this latest discovery is already packaged in a book ready to sell is indicative of the nature of this thing.

Anyway, archeology aside, this is not totally off topic because it raises the point that there is a huge audience for this type of stuff, worldwide, but here in America too.

And why here? Because the US is a very religious nation, made up of very (and some are very, very) religious people.

And our politics reflect that fact.

The GOP is clearly in the eye of "conservative", fundamentalist Christian men and groups. The GOP needs them.

The Democratic party is bigger and not so dominated by any one group, but traditionalists wrt religion abound in the Democratic party too.

So Mitt Romney, to be elected, needs to identify with this religious electorate. He has no other choice.

Blunt's amendment to ACA would allow any purchaser, plan sponsor, or other stakeholder (pretty broad) to object to ANY medical procedure or prescription for any religious OR moral reason.

Let's just take a Seventh Day Adventist business owner. Seventh Day Adventists believe people have a responsibility to care for their bodies. This includes attention to diet as well as abstinence from alcohol and tobacco. The person who knowingly violates simple health principles thereby bringing on ill health, disease or disability is living in violation of God's laws.

There would potentially be a lot of illnesses that wouldn't be covered. Just think about all the illnesses associated with obesity - heart disease, Type II diabetes, high blood pressure, knee pain and so on. A Seventh Day Adventist could invoke a religious objection under Blunt's amendment to ACA and deny coverage of these illnesses. Now could they make a distinction and say for you, a thin person, you're covered but for you, an obese person, aren't?

Or the Christian Scientists who doesn't believe in medical care. Or Jehovah's Witnesses who don't believe in blood transfusions.

Or I have a moral objection to the use of alcohol and I eliminate coverage for rehab or any alcohol related illness.

Or I have moral objections to promiscuous sex or homosexual sex and I refuse to cover STD's or HIV.

The Blunt Amendment is a very slippery slope.
And it should be a stand alone bill not attached to The Highway Bill.

Does the bill really allow an employer to exclude from insurance coverage anything that they consider "morally objectionable"? One can only imagine the range of exclusions: medicines made from animal products, vasectomies, fertility drugs, the HPV vaccine, medicines that are the result of experiments on animals, any cosmetic surgery.

And the United States Senate will actually vote on this?

Tellingly, some Dems have begun calling this the “Blunt-Brown Amendment,” hoping to hang it around the neck of Scott Brown, who’s facing a stiff challenge from Elizabeth Warren in Massachusetts, where this has become a major issue.

This is nothing but good news for Obama, there is no way he could of seen the GOP going ape shit over this. I am sure he had to of thought that the regulation would just another regulation then it blew up. Then when he clarified it he must of thought that the issue would die down.
But now this, the only one that could of beaten him is siding with a nut cases. This is like the Knick finding Jeremy Lin, this is like finding an $100 bill on the ground.

If we are at less than 7% unemployment in September, then the Socialist, Secret Muslim, Foreign Born, Half-breed Abomination of a Pseudo-President (Did I miss anything?) will be a shoe-in despite that a 6-7% unemployment rate still sucks.

The firm’s poll finds that one of the most important factors powering Obama’s gains against likely GOP nominee Mitt Romney has been the President’s improving numbers among unmarried women, a key pillar of the present and future Democratic coalition. Among this group, Obama now leads Romney by 65-30 — and there’s been a net 18-point swing towards the President among them:

To be fair, the bill labels single parenthood a "contributing factor" to child abuse, and given that children in a single parent household are more likely to be abused, that argument has some validity. But it should have included citations making that case and a disclaimer making clear that 'non-marital parenthood' is not in and of itself child abuse. As it is, it can be misread far too easily.

I encountered a thunder snow storm in northern Georgia in January, 1978, driving from northern Virginia back to Tulane. Managed to get off the road into a rest stop. re: #69 Santorum by 21 in TN. Beating Obama. OH GEEZE

Some info from the The Third National Incidence Study of Child Abuse and Neglect (2009). (There's also a link at the bottom to the NIS-4 which has been published).

People who are happily married tend to stay married and tend not to have families plagued with abuse, drug or alcohol issues, mental health problems, and other stuff like that. Married people who do have these problems in their relationships will tend to split up over time and form single parent households.

So the question is not comparing single parents with married households, but comparing the relative safety of father-headed households and mother-headed households, even though the numbers of these households are not the same. (And not because of the family courts. Most mother-headed families are that way by default, not by design or legal proceedings.) Hence, we convert the child abuse data from each type of household type into incident rates per 1,000 children.
---long snip-----
ABUSE
All abuse for children living with only their moms: 18.1 per 1,000 children.
For children living only with their dads: 31.0 per 1,000.

How could we let a night go by without our daily dose of insight from that great source of inspiration and American tradition, the Letter to the Editor?

We can't, so tonight's sample comes to us from... Oklahoma:

Evolutionary science wishful thinking and subjective guesswork

David Grow (Your Views, Feb. 20) claims that evolutionary science “is the product of 150 years of critical thinking and objective analysis.” Actually, it's the product of 150 years of wishful thinking and subjective guesswork. Grow wrote, “Certainly there is debate over cutting-edge details, and a lot more remains to be learned.” Grow is a master of understatement. But then “How did life begin?” could be considered a cutting-edge detail. Or how about something a little simpler, like how could anything as complex as the human eye evolve by chance?

If the case for evolution were as strong as its proponents would have you believe, all they'd have to do is “trot out their proof” and silence their critics. Instead, they're doing all they can to suppress any and all scientific evidence that's critical of their so-called theory. Since neither creation nor evolution has been scientifically proven, they both rest on faith. But a favorite tactic of evolutionists is to claim evolution is science and intelligent design is religion.

Yet even militant evolutionists have had to admit there is an “appearance" of design in nature. Grow would also have you believe that creationist organizations are the only ones questioning evolution. This is simply not true.

Dean Cave, Antlers

The eye! The eye! The eye disproves evolution!

This is America.

Oh, and speaking of creationism, remember that Alabama bill which we mentioned a while back, that would allow schools to dismiss classes so students could go to private institutions for a class during the day, a class on such topics like creationism?

Well, it passed one of its hurdles today, and could go for a vote next week:

Alabama House could debate religious instruction bill as soon as next week

A city or county school board could let high school students be excused from school to attend classes in religious instruction conducted by churches or other private groups, under a plan that could be debated by the House of Representatives as soon as next week.

The House Education Policy Committee approved the plan, House Bill 133, on a voice vote today.

[...]

Galliher said he sponsored the bill at the request of one of his constituents, Joseph Kennedy, a member of Southside Baptist Church near Gadsden. Kennedy said he would like to see a non-profit group teach creationism to public school students if Galliher's bill becomes law.

Galliher said that, under his bill, other groups could offer classes on Judaism or on the history of the Bible, for instance. "I'm not dictating," he said.

Galliher said South Carolina and some other states already have "released time" laws similar to what he has proposed.

Rep. Mary Sue McClurkin, R-Indian Springs, who chairs the committee, voted for the bill. "It allows some alternatives for kids to have some electives," she said. "It's really no cost to the school. Kids can have exposure to religious courses."

Committee member Rep. Phil Williams, R-Huntsville, voted no. He said schools need to offer more courses in math and science. "The future jobs are in that area," he said. "I think we need to be augmenting that area."

"I can't imagine us putting school children on a bus and sending them to a mosque to learn about the Koran. Or pick your religion," Williams said.

"I learned religion at home," he said. "Most people do."

Man, the Paul-tards are even crazier than I remember them. It's all "Well, most of these results aren't really binding....so the delegates from those states will all switch over to Paul!"

Yep. Those states will decide to send a bunch of delegates to specifically ignore what the voters of their state said in the primary, and vote for the guy who finished last or second to last in just about all of them. That's gonna happen.

And of course, you'll see plenty of comments along the lines of "Ron Paul really won every state. They just don't want you to know about it!"

There is a rising tide of STOOPID in this country, if I take all the statements from politicians, citizens (via "letters to the editors", etc.), television show (and other popular entertainment) content, and so forth, into account.

Now, I've tried to step back and ask myself - maybe it's just that I'm getting older I'm just become more curmudgeons, more set in my ways, less flexible, etc.

So I've tried that.

The situation is much fuzzier than the Libyan Revolutionary War last year. Syria seems split religiously, with the Sunnis on one side, Alawites on the other, and the Christians somewhere in the middle.

It doesn't help when we have Syrian Salafis in exile in Saudia calling for the Alawites to be fed to dogs, and for the Christians to be slaughtered.

Iowa lawmakers seek to penalize animal rights activists

The Iowa state Senate voted overwhelmingly on Tuesday to impose penalties on animal rights activists caught trying to get a job at a farm or animal production facility in order to gather evidence such as cruelty to animals.

Senator Joe Seng, a Democrat, said animal rights activists with an agenda to expose conditions inside livestock confinements can expose the animals to disease.

"People are trying to get into these places, saying they're a plumber or they're this or that, they're going to take care of your livestock with no intention of that whatsoever. They're trying to bring down this business," Seng said.

[...]

Imagine that - an "animal rights activist" trying "bring down" the business of factory farms and slaughtering animals after treating them cruelly.

Can't ride to the rescue without scouting the route first. A police chief in Mexico tried a "ride to the sound of the guns" move when the Zetas attacked the home of his city's mayor. Too late, the chief of police found out the truth: He and his rescue force were the real targets, and the attack on the mayor's home was only intended to draw out just such a relief force into an ambush. The police chief was killed in that ambush and most of his men died with him.

Moral of the story: If it looks like you've got a clear path to your objective, watch out! It's quite likely a trap.

File this under "Why We're Doomed":

Woman charged with burning 'The Senator' says she did it 'to use illegal drugs'

A woman on Tuesday was charged with setting a fire that burned The Senator, one of the world's oldest cypress trees -- and she told authorities she did it because she was wanted light to see the drugs she was doing, investigators said.

Two witnesses identified Sara Barnes, 26, as the person who set the fire, authorities said.

Barnes took photos of the flames with her cellphone and told one of the witnesses that she started it, the Florida Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services said.

"She did not call the Fire Department or 911 to report the fire," said Sterling Ivey, an agriculture-department spokesman.

The tree, which had twigs and branches piled at the base, burned quickly.

"It's a great fuel source," Ivey said. "Unfortunately."

Investigators searched Barnes' apartment near Winter Park Tuesday and confiscated her cellphone and laptop computer. Authorities found methamphetamine, a glass pipe and other drug paraphernalia, they said.

[...]

The Senator, which stood at Big Tree Park north of Longwood, burned a little after 5:30 a.m. Jan. 16. Known as "The Big Tree," it was thought to have been more than 3,500 years old. With a height of 118 feet and a diameter of nearly 18 feet, the tree was a tourist attraction long before Walt Disney World.

A tip to Crimeline Jan. 17 led to Barnes' arrest. She is being held in the Seminole County Jail.

Another person was with Barnes when the interior of the tree was set on fire, Ivey said. That person has not been publicly identified or charged.

Seminole County will spend nearly $30,000 to install fencing at Big Tree Park near the site where The Senator stood, county commissioners decided today. The fence is designed to prevent someone from stealing the remains of the tree or damaging Lady Liberty, another cypress tree that is an estimated 2,000 years old.

So, we burn 3500 year old trees just to get a little light to see the speed we're taking.

With what I have learned about SA in the past week, I am pissed off enough that I'm contemplating making the assertion that, as long as the Saudi Family is in power, we continue to be under threat of Terrorism from the Salafists.

To put it in terms that would get the attention of others, as long Saudi exists with its current government, there is a good chance another 9/11 will happen. Saudi will never do anything to stop their extremists, and all they are doing now is changing the window dressing.

Also, Argentina is getting doubling down on the Derp. They want to ban UK Imports.

However, I have calmed more than a bit on this. Especially since some people in Britain now want to celebrate the Falklands War and how they beat the shit out of Argentina. But I guess we're going to burn the forests for other addictions too.

Who is this "we" you speak of? I quit smoking meth many years ago. And just for the record, I never set any trees on fire to use it.

Okay, another example:

[...]

In Dalton, Gingrich said North Dakota's oil boom proves that the USA can produce enough domestic oil for its needs. "The No. 1 thing North Dakota proves is that the idea of peak oil, that we're about to run out, is simply false," he said. "We will probably, by the end of the decade, be the largest oil-producing country in the world."

Ernie Acree, 43, of Dalton, said he supports Gingrich because of "his belief in God and country. The second thing is his experience. Also, he's from Georgia. I just think that he's the right guy."

[...]

Newtie claims the US can be the largest producer of "oil" in the world. A stupid claim, unless he's claiming that we (or someone) are going to destroy the nations of Russia and Saudi Arabia so completely that they won't be producing "oil".

However, Newtie's supporter cares about two things: God, and Georgia. Tribalism, in two forms.

My point is simply this: as humans are primary goal (and this was programed evolutionarily) is to maximize our reproductive chances through the techniques of (1) maximizing resources and (2) manipulating others (usually through deception.)

Our destructive ability was held in check by limited energy (and thus by thermodynamics limited effects). With the discovery of non-edible energy sources (e.g., coal) we've turn off the energy balance system that has held us in check, and now we're doing what no other species has done before.

The last time the Earth has seen anything this destructive (from a living thing) was the rise of plants hundreds and hundreds of millions of years ago - they changed the atmosphere too and thus changed the whole planet surface.

Now we're the ones doing the change, and we're doing it much more rapidly than the plants ever could.

The higher the return to the shareholder, the wealthier that shareholder will be. Wealth is a strong predictor for a high availability reproductive chances.

It is true that in post WWII societies the wealthy have often chose to limit the number of their children voluntarily, but usually they don't limit the reproductive ... acts.

Sheriff Joe's calling a press conference!

Rather than taking cover from his legal woes and heavy criticism over inadequate sex-crimes investigations, Arpaio, the self-proclaimed toughest sheriff in America, is stepping into the spotlight Thursday, March 1, 2012 to unveil preliminary results of his volunteer posse's investigation into the authenticity of President Barack Obama's birth certificate, a debunked controversy that remains alive in the eyes of some conservatives.

Arpaio's probe comes amid a federal grand jury investigation into the sheriff's office on criminal abuse-of-power allegations since at least December 2009, focusing on the sheriff's anti-public corruption squad. Separately, the U.S. Justice Department has accused Arpaio's office of racially profiling Latinos, basing immigration enforcement on racially charged citizen complaints and punishing Hispanic jail inmates for speaking Spanish. Arpaio denies the allegations and said the investigation is politically motivated.

Just what Mitt needs: Southern Baptists rejecting him as a fellow Christian.

"SBC’s Richard Land: Romney Not a Christian, Compares Mormonism to Islam"

[Link: www.newsmax.com...]

"...Land’s comments may indicate that even if Romney wins the GOP nomination, he may face resistance from GOP base voters...

...the best way to describe Mormonism, perhaps the most charitable way to describe Mormonism, is that it’s a fourth Abrahamic religion, with Joseph Smith playing the role that Muhammad plays in Islam and the Book of Mormon playing the role that the Quran plays in Islam. .

Islam is not a Christian faith. Mormonism is not a Christian faith,” he said with emphasis.

And that due to the economic collapse of 2008, rather than the President. It's distressing to realize how many people think the President is a conniving little micro-manager who has all these buttons he can push to screw the American people.

Some years ago I was on a commuter train, and I needed to know the time. This was before the days of ubiquitous mobile phones, and I didn't have a watch. However, the young lady standing next to me did have one - hanging from a nice necklace, and quite exposed with her low-cut top. I checked the time. She got offended and turned away.

Yeah, answering questions is hard stuff. Hurts the brain.
Reality check -- Romney, in a momentary lapse, allowed his conscience and judgement to influence his decision-making process. However, soon thereafter he recovered and returned to reciting the scripted talking point intended to pander to sanctimonious social conservatives.
In an effort to garner support from both moderates and tea party/conservative extremists, Mitt has been flip-flopping more frequently than a freshly-hooked fish on land.

Bottom line -- No employer should have the right to impose their own religious mores onto their employees.

Well, even beyond that, we should keep them appropriate because it's the proper thing to do, at least to me. No need to mourn him, but reveling in the death of someone, even someone you vehemently dislike or even hate, just seems wrong to me. Especially when said person has remaining family and friends that have to deal with the loss.

I think this is reasonable and appropriate: one often sees data points suggesting that living a life of bitterness and anger is not conducive to a long, healthy and happy life. One does not often see data points to the contrary.

Don't live lives of bitterness and anger. There's too much else out there to enjoy.

Of course it's tragic, but he left behind more people than his wife and family.

Think of Shirley Sherrod.

Of course there were other villains in the Sherrod case, from the Administration which forced her to resign before watching the original speech, to the president of the NAACP, Mr. Jealous, who condemned her comments before asking his own archivist for a copy of her speech to an NAACP audience.

Her lawsuit against Breitbart is still progressing. I hope she prevails.

Ask not for whom the bell tolls...

For Whom the Bell Tolls
by John Donne

No man is an island,
Entire of itself.
Each is a piece of the continent,
A part of the main.
If a clod be washed away by the sea,
Europe is the less.
As well as if a promontory were.
As well as if a manner of thine own
Or of thine friend's were.
Each man's death diminishes me,
For I am involved in mankind.
Therefore, send not to know
For whom the bell tolls,
It tolls for thee.

Actually, no. As I've said, tragedy is subjective. So one either feels it's a tragedy or not. There don't have to be explanations for feelings.

However, I would suggest that a person being a bad or a good person certainly can play a role in whether one considers their passing a tragedy. This one factor you've missed in your analysis above.

Yes. It's pointless to say it. If every death is a tragedy, saying any particular death is a tragedy is pointless. It also ignores that tragedy is a subjective term. Does that mean, if my point of view were true, that you would object to people making that comment, that you would state that it was pointless, or that you would just regard the comment as pointless and move on?

I think that it is not pointless to say it, even if every death were considered a tragedy. Some people, for whatever reason, feel the need to say something in situations like this. That is their way of processing the information. Sometimes that process is their only point. Does that make it wrong?

As for my point of view, you make an interesting observation. Of course there will be people, such as the BTK killer, who blur the line. None of us can say who truly views the death of a person like that a tragedy. If someone were to make the observation that is was a tragedy for some reason, would that person be wrong for having those feelings? Most people would feel his death was justified, but actually celebrating that death is different.

But every death isn't considered a tragedy, anyway. So your point doesn't even stand. "It's a tragedy" is something we say about special deaths, of special people. When MLK was assassinated, it was a tragedy.
