Today, breitbart.com “editor” Meredith Dake has A Note on Comments, and it’s pretty funny.

Over the past month, we’ve monitored how our readers have responded to the new comment format, and how our new comment system has served our site and our vast readership. We’ve also monitored how the hordes of trolls manage the new system, and have been developing new safeguards based on a month of monitoring their behavior.

“New safeguards?” You mean, like reading them? It’s kind of hard to miss the N word, or comments about chimps and gorillas and silverbacks and “nig-nogs” — they sort of jump right out at you.

We appreciate your feedback and your patience in working with a new system over the past month. Hopefully, you will see the improvements that we are already seeing with our changes, and we will continue to monitor your feedback—as well as the IP addresses of trolls that try to flood our system.

The trolls! They’re everywhere! I’m not sure how they can distinguish trolls from their regular commenters, but when you’re making excuses, “troll” is always good.

We very much appreciate those of you who have pointed out comments that are inappropriate and threads that have been ambushed by trolls. Because of the popularity of some of our posts, infusions of offensive comments — mostly from posters using IP anonymizers and other ways to hide their identity — have been making their way onto our site. We want our comment section to be a place of camaraderie and stimulating debate, and we’re continuing to modify our comment settings to ensure that happens.

Camaraderie, stimulating debate, and constant gutter hatred directed at liberals, President Obama, Michelle Obama, and every African American spokesperson they post about. Stimulating! But of course, it’s those “trolls” with their IP anonymizers that are doing it.

Some of those who are desperate for the Breitbart sites to be silenced spend their entire weekends (and weekdays) devoted to the trolls in our comment section. That’s right, not the posts, the comments. Often, within minutes of these shut-ins pointing out inappropriate comments, another round of inspired, anonymous trolls spews their hatred in the same post.

Hey, that’s me she’s calling a “shut-in!” That makes me nostalgic for Andrew Breitbart — it was one of his favorite weird insults. Good to know that Meredith is carrying on the tradition.

But spending an “entire weekend?” Maybe it would take Meredith all weekend to do something like this, but those kinds of posts usually take me about 15-30 minutes at most. Of course, I know how to use some of these new-fangled computer-type tools like macros that switch windows and do the copying and pasting for me, but I wouldn’t expect the mini-Breits to know about those.

And “silencing” them is the last thing I want. It’s great that the right wing exposes themselves the way they do at breitbart.com, and I hope they continue doing it.

While we appreciate the feigned concern of our critics about the atmosphere of our comment sections—bless your hearts, go out and get some sunshine!

Meredith Dake’s concern for me is touching. But really, Meredith — I get plenty of sunshine and fresh air. Knowing how to use these new-fangled computer thingies can actually give you more free time, if you do it right.

But it’s good to know that there won’t be any more racist insanity, or hate speech, or hallucinatory paranoid conspiracy theories in the comments for the race-baiting articles at breitbart.com.
