Amazon’s New Kindles Are Greatly Improved
Wired Magazine has a good summary of the new features and technological improvements in Amazon’s revamped line of Kindles, announced today. The Kindle Fire has some excellent enhancements, including a much faster and more powerful processor, a 1920x1200 HD display, a front-facing HD camera for video calling, a redesigned Dolby audio system, and it now supports 4G LTE wireless for only $50 a year — an amazingly low price.
I’m almost ready to buy a tablet myself, and I’m going to have a hard time deciding between the Kindle Fire HD and the new iPad. The Kindle Fire is moving more into the realm of a general purpose tablet (although the Android-based OS still seems optimized toward consuming Amazon content, oddly enough). And there’s no doubt that it’s significantly less expensive than an iPad.
There’s also a very tempting new version of the Kindle e-reader called the Kindle Paperwhite, with a redesigned high-resolution display and free 3G wireless. The display uses a patented new “front lighted” technology so that the diffused light is directed down toward the surface from above, instead of the standard back-lighting that shines the light toward your eyes. Amazon says this reduces eye strain, and I see no reason to doubt it.
I’m pretty sure I’m going to talk myself into buying one of these Kindles (I may get the Wi-Fi only version for $60 less).
If you’re ready to take the jump into Kindledom (I own three of the suckers, and they’ve totally revolutionized my reading habits), please click through to Amazon from one of our direct links and we’ll get a small referral fee from your purchase to help keep LGF healthy.
