It’s a pretty dark little film. Really well done, though.

I would give up everything I own, most of what I aspire to own, and a great many of my memories to have a robot like Max. Not even slightly kidding. I bet he’s running a kernel developed by one of Linus Torvalds’ grandkids.

It did, and thank you for posting it. There is a lot more of this going on than most people realize. In particular, practically every rural high school in Texas, and a good many urban ones, has had its own brutal and degrading “intiation” ritual for freshman boys for decades. Foreign object sodomy is a well-nigh universal feature of this hazing. I’ve been aware of this since the 70s, when I taught high school for a couple of years here, and got involved in helping a high minded sheriff who was trying to stamp out these barbarous practices. He had some success, but the general attitude was to shame whomever had “squealed” and dismiss it with “boys will be boys.”

It seems really fucking unfair that we can have both rampant homophobia and boys sexually hazing other boys. Can’t we just have one awful thing?

There actually seems to be some kind of correlation between this and extreme homophobia, but I am not nearly versed enough in adolescent psychology to explain what it is.

I’ve resigned myself to Snowden ending up in Ecuador.

That hotel where he stayed wasn’t a fleabag before but it apparently is now.

It’s the same psychology that leads to calling the guys who hang out with the girls all the time ‘gay’.

I’m afraid not, and this isn’t Texas, its all over the nation. One of the schools was Maine West high School in Niles, IL, which is not far from where I live. Thankfully, in that case the coach who appears to have abetted the abuse has been criminally charged.

When it comes to rape, “boys will be boys” should never be said. Rape is evil and must never be tolerated. Period.

I made a sourdough starter on Thursday, and I made baguettes today using the starter.

My bread came out all dense and heavy, not light and fluffy, even though I let it rise for 2 hours, not including all the rise times for the starter dough and then the bread dough and then the bread loaves. I must have spent like 8 hours total on this bread and that is not including the time they said to leave it in the fridge overnight.

I was standing on my feet for hours on end kneading this dough and shaping the dough and now my ankle is swollen up like a softball. Thanks, arthritis!

I DON’T BELIEVE ARTISAN BAKERS SPEND THIS MUCH FREAKING TIME ON THEIR BREADS!!11

I haz a sad. :(

re: #7 Occam’s Guillotine

It is amazing what conservative Texans will tolerate in the name of keeping up appearances and not “upsetting people.” While I was still in college, circa 1976, I worked as a security guard at a notoriously sleazy local motel. I happened to be present when the irate mom of a local high school boy arrived, broke down the door to a room, and found her son and 3 other boys in flagrante delecto with a first grade teacher from the same district. My main involvement was to keep mom from murdering the naked educator right on the spot. We called the police, they thought it was a great joke and gave mom a stern warning about trying to kill people. The superintendent of the district called me for my story, which I provided, and little else was heard about it. The teacher was allowed to leave with a good reference at the end of the year. Today, this might result in an actual prosecution of the teacher, but it might not. Attitudes change at a glacial pace out in the sticks here.

And here’s a story to lift the spirits:

What Love Looks Like: Man and Cat Swim to Safety in the Alberta, Canada, Flood

As you may or may not know, Alberta, Canada, has been besieged with massive flooding that’s already left thousands homeless as they’ve been ordered to evacuate.

Kevan Yaets is one of those people. While fleeing the floods, Yaets’ pickup truck was swept away by the powerful waters. Yaets may have lost his truck and possibly his home, but he’s not defeated at all. Yaets still has his cat friend, Momo.

Image: cat-owner-swim_2.jpg

As you can see in these dramatic photos, Yaets would do anything for Momo. As his truck went under, Yaets and Momo escaped through a back window and swam to safety.

That is one very angry kitty in the last two pictures, but I am glad he is only “angry” and not something worse.

Most cats don’t like to swim.

It’s the same psychology that leads to calling the guys who hang out with the girls all the time ‘gay’.

It also reminds me of one of the best definitions of homophobia I’ve ever heard:

“The fear gay men will treat you the way you treat women.”

This kind of deeply disturbed mindset also helps the homophobes explain away sexual assault on other men and boys: as long as they’re doing the penetrating (as opposed to being penetrated), it doesn’t count as “gay”.

A flea and a fly in a flue
Were imprisoned, so what could they do?
Said the flea, “let us fly.”
Said the fly, “let us flee.”
So they flew through a flaw in the flue.
