Glenn Beck’s Bizarre Defense Against Boston Bombings Defamation Suit

Saudi student turned into a public figure when Beck smeared him
Wingnuts • Views: 25,227

As we reported back in April, raving freakazoid nut sandwich Glenn Beck is being sued for defamation by the Saudi student he falsely accused of being the “money man” behind the Boston marathon bombings. Today the Washington Post has new details on the bizarre strategy Beck’s lawyers are trying to use to defend him; they’re claiming Abdulrahman Alharbi is a “public figure,” which would significantly raise the bar for proving a defamation case.

How and when did Alharbi become a public figure? Well, according to Beck’s doubtlessly expensive legal team, it happened when Glenn Beck accused him of being behind the Boston terror attacks, and he tried to defend himself against Beck’s accusations. Oh, my aching head.

What makes Alharbi a public figure, according to Beck? “By behaving suspiciously at the Marathon finishing line when the bombs detonated, thereby causing his detention and a background check by law enforcement,” states Beck’s motion to dismiss, Alharbi “embarked on a course of conduct that was reasonably likely to result in public attention and comment on his background, activities, and immigration status.” Plus, he gave interviews defending himself, said Beck’s legal team, led by Michael J. Grygiel.

Publicly defending yourself from allegations that you’re a terrorist is grounds for people to call you a terrorist?

Not only that, it makes you a “Public Figure”, so the bar gets raised. If he hadn’t defended himself against Becks accusations, then he’s guilty by lack of denial, and by denying it actively, he’s a public figure. Which Beck made him by accusing him, so he defended himself,

Don’t salivate, people. At these levels of wealth, any likely penalty is ‘budget dust’. Sheldon Adelson put 120-150 million into the Romney fiasco. On election day, he had more cash on hand than when he started.

I think some of the golf courses would make lovely parks for the public. And then the younger people can go there and do what they like to do with their tablets and phones, which is not out playing golf.

Who knows, some might even kick around some soccer balls. Play guitar take some pictures…chill out.

So given this pinpoint accuracy that Hamas has, could we also assume that the majority of rockets fired by them are actually aimed at empty fields?

Not trying to troll here, but if Hamas was this accurate, they’d have done some actual damage in Israel by now, and not just hit a random spot one mile from an airport.

It’s not about accuracy - if you use the same exact variables, you’ll end up getting similar results. The Hamas operatives carrying out the rocket launches don’t know which targets they’ll end up hitting (if any), but since they launch several at a time - put one in the launcher, fire, then another after a few seconds without altering anything, and repeat - it’ll be several of the rockets hitting that same spot. For example, the three that were intercepted over my head a few days ago (seems like yesterday or even today, working bizarre hours this month has messed up my sense of time) would probably have ended up landing fairly close to one another had they not been intercepted, despite the fact that Hamas is initially unable to know where they’d actually end up landing..

I think the contention is that they hit before they finished their flight, so they’d be closer together, too.

Israel is blowing the shit out of a lot of things without anything more than a “There’s arms in there”. Why would they suddenly concoct a cover story for just one thing that blew up? THis is the fourth UN facility that got hit.

I mean, it’s possible, but it’s kind of pointless.

I mean, it’s possible, but it’s kind of pointless.

The whole fuckin’ thing is pointless, in my opinion. Israel has tried this strategy (as has Hamas) for generations…after this shit blows over everyone will rebuild, there will be a period of calm (while they reload), and it will start all over again. There will be no winner until they change the way they play the game (i.e. talk to each other).

Dallas judge risks his political future by seeking to house 2,000 immigrant children

Dallas Judge Clay Jenkins, 50, offered federal authorities empty buildings to house 2,000 children from Central America in a risky political move as he faces re-election in November for the top political office in Dallas County.

“These children need our help now. If I lose an election over this, so be it,” said Jenkins, who has offered the use of two empty schools and a warehouse and has the unilateral power to do so under the way the county commission operates.

It’s actually why I respect him less than Cruz. Cruz, I expect pathetic hold ups of State Department officials over cancelling commercial flights to Israel. Why? Because it’s Ted Cruz whose sole purpose in elected office is to be the TP’s water carrier. McCain though once upon a time was the champion of campaign finance, condemned the religious right/torture, and championed immigration reform. I don’t know if he’s senile (in which case I think he should step aside) or a colossal panderer made bitter by being beaten first by Bush and then Obama) but I have no respect for the man anymore.

THEY’RE ALL BROWN, THAT MEANS THEY’RE IMMIGRANTS!!!!1!111

Easy mistake to make, when all you look at is the hue. Easy mistake to avoid, if you’re not out to make a dumb point about brown people. In this case, they intended to criticize somebody else’s dumb point, and blew it.

This case is a precursor I think to the massive amounts of civil damage Bergdahl will be inflicting on Rush Limbaugh, Fox News, and the rest of the right wing psycho monkey poo flinging machine.

I’m thinking 9 figures in damages will be awarded.

re: #84 HappyWarrior

It’s actually why I respect him less than Cruz. Cruz, I expect pathetic hold ups of State Department officials over cancelling commercial flights to Israel. Why? Because it’s Ted Cruz whose sole purpose in elected office is to be the TP’s water carrier. McCain though once upon a time was the champion of campaign finance, condemned the religious right/torture, and championed immigration reform. I don’t know if he’s senile (in which case I think he should step aside) or a colossal panderer made bitter by being beaten first by Bush and then Obama) but I have no respect for the man anymore.

Essentially agree. It’s known that McCain is capable of better and thus has fallen to this low threshold. There’s no evidence at all that Cruz is capable of acting like a human being.

Good. We need more of this. The xenophobes and bigots can STFU. These are kids that are desperate. They need help, not scare tactics and fear.

it is what is so maddening about him, every once in a while, he says something that actually makes you think that there is still some humanity in him. Does it excuse him being a media pandering asshat the other 93% of the time, no. At least with maverick, he forces you to make the saving throw.

Don’t give him too much credit for humanity. The next statement in that article was:

McCain said he didn’t plan to speak to Arizona Gov. Jan Brewer about the execution, calling it a “state issue.”

So it’s still his usual pandering lip-service.

And he was so upset about the botched execution that he went on Greta Van Susteren’s show to complain about Obama:

“The self-pity that Obama continues to exhibit is really kind of sad, really,” McCain said on Wednesday during Fox News’ “On the Record with Greta Van Susteren.”

“You know, I can’t work with him at all,” McCain said. “When is the last time he really called leaders of both parties together over at the White House, say, for a dinner, a social event.”

(Obviously forgot that SuperBowl invitation in 2009 that Mr. Maverick turned down.)

Once a whiny, pandering asshole, always a whiny pandering asshole. (For the record—I have NEVER been a McCain fan. Could you tell?)

HACKERS could be behind emails not working at Gloucester City Council.

Officers there believe the Anonymous group, which targeted and took over the Twitter account of the authority’s deputy leader Jennie Dallimore in recent days, may have struck again.

Read more at gloucestercitizen.co.uk

The city council believes the problem could connected with deputy leader Jennie Dallimore’s Twitter account being hacked.

The incident concerning her personal account happened on July 17 when hackers claiming to be from the Anonymous group took control of her postings, putting out anti-Conservative messages and vowing not to ‘forgive or forget’.

The Conservative city councillor for Podsmead has over 1,000 followers.

She managed to delete some of the 10 messages posted by the hackers, but she has since been locked out of her account.
