Is St. Louis County Prosecutor Robert McCulloch Helping Raise Money for Ofc. Darren Wilson?

A clear conflict of interest
US News • Views: 121,122
St. Louis County Prosecuting Attorney Robert P. McCulloch

In what seems to be a serious conflict of interest, a T-shirt being sold to raise money for officer Darren Wilson, who gunned down unarmed teenager Michael Brown in a Ferguson street last month, appears to be associated with the St. Louis County Prosecuting Attorney, Robert P. McCulloch; here’s the page for the T-shirt: I SUPPORT OFFICER D. WILSON | Teespring.

“I SUPPORT OFFICER D. WILSON” is an officer inspired design to show support for officer Darren Wilson of the Ferguson Police Department in Missouri. Donations from purchases will be divided between a fund set up for Officer Wilson at gofundme.com as well as The BackStoppers Inc. organization which can be visited at backstoppers.org for more information.

And at the website of backstoppers.org, we find that the Vice President of this company is none other than Robert McCulloch:

(h/t: @gwmizer.)

UPDATE at 9/14/14 5:57:03 pm by Charles Johnson

According to an article at stltoday.com, McCulloch is now actually the President of Backstoppers, Inc.

McCulloch joined former St. Louis County Police Chief Ron Battelle in accepting a $292,000 check from the 27th annual Budweiser Guns ‘N Hoses event earlier today at city hall in St. Louis. McCulloch also will be serving as president of the board for Backstoppers in the 50th anniversary year of his father’s death.

I get the feeling, more and more, that this is what drove the DoJ to widen their investigation. That there is every appearance of a serious effort behind the scenes to squash this incident and allow Wilson to avoid criminal charges.

Thank you for posting this.

As the people in Ferguson know, justice is an abstract idea.

At some point the powers that be will decide to let Wilson face the justice he deserves, the heat is too high on them.

It needs to be this hot constantly.

It will be the Justice Dept.

Gah I hope the FBI got the info they need, i.e. examination of the gun and the cop car. I’m sure Wilson lost his uniform & the gunpowder residue forthwith.

To be fair, it seems as though the heat has died down, as it tends to in our 24/7 news cycle. As the nation’s focus has left Ferguson, the trickle of movement from the authorities there has dried up and the protests (when they’ve continued) have failed to get any coverage.

Perhaps when the toxicology results come back it will pick up again, but I wouldn’t be surprised if that’s another item that gets buried should the results show anything other than drugs in Brown’s system that could help the argument that he was aggressively violent that afternoon.

That’s it he simply must recuse himself and bring in another. Not that I expect him to have that much ethical strength or backbone. I don’t see any two ways about it.

The fix seemed to be in when he and Nixon said within hours of each other than he’d only go if Nixon asked him to recuse himself, but Nixon will only do so if he asks Nixon to give that order.

Everything has quieted down but if there is no indictment of Wilson then what we have witnessed so far will seem like nothing.

I need to say this: It is possible that McCulloch doesn’t know that Backstoppers is involved with selling this t-shirt or that he did not participate in the decision to sell it.

It is of course also possible that McCulloch knew and approved, but I’d like to know more before I render judgement.

If McCulloch knew that a organization he is part of was selling those shirts, then he has to recuse himself. If he did not, then he needs to suspend his involvement with Backstoppers until the case is concluded.

Dark, this is a bit like Paul keeping his relationship to his newsletters “ambiguous” until people started pointing out all the racist shit that was being printed in his name, at which point he declared he had no idea that was going on.

I don’t expect McCulloch to give a straight answer on this, I actually expect he’ll avoid the question until someone higher than him on the totem pole takes him to task for it, at which point he’ll declare he had no idea that these t-shirts were being printed and sold to raise money for Wilson.

A change of venue was a legitimate measure, since it would have been hard for the officers to get a fair trial in a majority black area. But where the trial was moved to wasn’t kosher; In granting the change of venue the presiding judge specifically directed that the case should be heard in an area outside of the Los Angeles media market. Semi Valley may have its own newspaper, but it gets LA local network stations and thus clearly should not have been chosen.

I’ve read about that one and its not very clear. But what is clear is that if he turned he’d have been running right into a Panda Express with a number of people eating within. Given the risk of someone with a blade in close quarters like that, shooting said person in the back might be justified in such a case.

It’s important to understand in this case, unlike in Ferguson, the statements of witnesses are contradicting each other. Also unlike Ferguson, the police have interviewed the witnesses.

A final note: Though the deceased’s mother has said that the sword in question was an unsharpened souvenir, it is almost certain the police could not have known that to be the case. So they had to proceed as if it were a deadly weapon.

Rand’s strategy seems to be “pivot early.” He’s defying the historical wisdom that GOP primary candidates need to run to the right and then move to the middle in the general election. If he does win the nomination he thinks he’ll be in a better position, or at least a more plausibly believable one, than his two immediate predecessors were.

He probably figures that his only real competition right now is Ted “Smarmy McPunchFace” Cruz, and can beat him by appealing to a middle that includes financial conservatives and war weary independents. The entire strategy is cynical as all fuck.

The GOP overall strategy still seems to be preparing to run against Hillary in 2016. Aqua Buddah’s approach looks like it’s going to be selling himself as the “common sense” candidate, suggesting that compared to the communist/socialist Clinton, he’s a “common sense” candidate who just wants what everyday Americans want.

Paul and Cruz both have ‘daddy problems’. It would take about 4 thirty-second video shots to send sane people running for their Democratic voter registration table.

Rand also has a problem in the primary if he’s seen as betraying his family’s brand and libertarian ideology. He’s already trying to distance himself from his prior statements against Title II of the ‘64 Civil Rights Act, mostly by lying and pretending he didn’t make them. He’s hoping that the tenthers will hold their noses and vote for him anyway, but he’s going to be running against Cruz who will have the reliable votes of the hardcore religious right.

It’s kind of ridiculous to be speculating this far in advance, but none of the other candidates even seem to stand a chance.

Should a man be penalized for nutty things his father says? I recall people arguing not where Barack Obama was concerned.

93 readyfreddy815  Sep 14, 2014 7:34:48pm

The irony of this story is that Nixon and McCulloch are Democrats. This leaves the rightwing loons in a difficult position. Do they root for the white cop and in turn, for the decisions of Democrats, whom they dearly loathe? Or, do they root for the “black thug” whom they also dearly hate. It’s the same kind of catch-22 that has them supporting KGB Putin and the sticky predicament of who to support in the Iraq/Syria/Al Qaeda/ISIS/etc quagmire. That’s what happens when all of your decisions are made based on hate.

Has the man openly repudiated their father and said something to the affect of “Look we have a first amendment in this nation my father is free to say whatever he wants, even if I don’t with a lick of what he says?” Because when children keep mum and nodd along with the crazy shit their parrent’s say rather than calling then out on it, yes it is far to penalize them for it.

Zedushka for some reason started shrieking with laughter and he pointed, gasping for breath, at the sign on the back of our hotel room door.

I took a picture but it didn’t come out too good but here is what it says:

4. (1) No innkeeper is liable to make good to any guest of his any loss or injury to goods brought to his inn, not being a horse or any live animal, or any gear appertaining thereto, or a carriage, to a greater amount than the sum of $40

It’s Innkeeper’s Statutes of Ontario Canada translated to Chinese & then back to English in 1906.

Right, there’s that too. Barack Obama, Sr had very little influence on his son. Meanwhile, Rand did start by campaigning for his father for president he definitely used his father’s name to run for higher office and succeeded. Ted Cruz has called his father his mentor and cited him as an influence. Plus these guys as I said have views that mirror their fathers.

Right definitely. The senior Cruz and Paul aren’t your typical father of the candidate. Speaking of sins of the father though, I do recall some on the right trying to use the fact that Al Gore, Sr voted against the CRA of ‘64 against his son which is funny given that their party used the fact that Gore was fairly liberal by southern standards on civil rights to beat him in the election that he lost.

That graph doesn’t mean anything related to what you were saying, as George Soros doesn’t contribute through unions. I’d also make the point that much of the contribution unions make to campaigns is non-monetary. Union members man phone banks and perform get-out-the-vote functions, duties which are not monetized but which are crucial.

And lastly, it needs to be said that not all Koch Industries and union spending is in opposition. A great many many workers at Koch companies belong to unions and non-government unions often support Koch projects that they feel will result in additional union jobs.

So the relationship between Charles and David Koch and organized labor is far more complicated and a good bit better, than can be depicted in a single graph.

Oh. Excellent. By the way, anyone know what the best bio on TR is? I read the H.W Brands one on FDR which I thought was excellent. I thought Brands was fair. Don’t know if Brands is liberal, conservative, or what but he was fair to FDR.

Edmund Morris wrote a 3 volume biography of Roosevelt.

Morris, Edmund (1979), The Rise of Theodore Roosevelt, 1. To 1901; vol 2: Theodore Rex 1901-1909 (2001); vol 3: Colonel Roosevelt (2010);

The first volume, published in 1979, won a Pulitzer. And I think some earlier PBS specials on Roosevelt drew heavily upon these. At at least used the title “Theodore Rex” for one of the episodes.

Good morning Lizards.

With the lower overnight temps it looks like some warm-loving critters are looking for heated digs. Got up this morning to find a large cockroach in the main room of the apartment. It had been de-legged and otherwise mangled and thus was deceased. Neither furry hunter took credit for the kill, but given that both of them are taking extra time checking out the baseboards in the one bathroom I guess that is where they discovered it. (And I guess the cockroach discovered that it has decreased scuttling power once the cats tore a few legs off.)

Not a new thing. In the house I had in western PA a few decades back the Siamese hunted field crickets and roughly did the same deal to them. I’d find a trail of legs leading to a deceased cricket chassis. Said crickets were also the reason the neighborhood wolf spiders were monsters - and the cats left those alone.

Sounds good. I typically prefer single volumes but I’d make an exception.

For major historical figures I tend to allow for longer biographies (or multi-volume) in order to give the author the chance to spend time on the upbringing and developing years of the figure that shorter works cut out. TR deserves this in spades due to some of his youthful adventures.

As a comparison there is a one volume version of Freeman’s biography of Robert E Lee. Freeman’s full biography is four volumes and is much more extensive on Lee’s early life and initial military career. It’s also a bit more of a slog to read through.

I also liked David Herbert Donald’s biography of Lincoln (1996). In that Lincoln wasn’t elected President until about 320 pages in. A lot of background supplied to show what the man was like before he assumed that office and started making major decisions that would affect the entire country.

Falling concrete from Brent Spence misses tailgaters

Brothers and his roommate parked their car next to the support beam Sunday morning in a grassy lot on West Pete Rose Way just east of Longworth Hall. They met some friends at the Longworth Hall parking lot, then went to the game.

When they returned to the car later that afternoon, the windshield of his car was demolished by several pieces of concrete measuring up to a foot wide. The concrete fell from a support beam for the exit ramp from the Brent Spence Bridge to downtown Cincinnati and Interstate 71.

You know what’s really depressing about that photo? There was a time in the US, not too long ago, where that kind of mistake just would not happen. Period.

That’s an embarrassment. Also, think about this: that wasn’t just the fault of the artist who typeset it; that went through a few layers of supervision before it went to print.

KANAWHA COUNTY, w.va. (WSAZ) — Kanawha County Sheriff’s Deputies are looking for two people who stole from a convenience store and then set their getaway truck on fire.

Deputies tell wsaz.com two people walked into the 7-11 on Sissonville Drive about 3:45 a.m. Monday. One person jumped the counter and stole cigarettes, while the other went to the beer cooler and took beer, according to deputies.

The two people left the store in a dump truck.

Probably a whole slew of mistakes, poor organization, poor process, and other issues behind that. Along with much simpler technology that due to the relative inexpensiveness of the process makes the time and effort to due serious proofreading not worth the price and effort. Unless, of course, you do want to treat the product seriously with the knowledge that it reflects directly on the perception of your organization.

Yeah, good luck with that in the United States.

The problem with Tyson’s statement is that one of the most important things in human existence; that is ethics; is entirely non-objective.

Things like ‘goodness’, ‘evil’, ‘value’, have no objective reality. They are entirely a matter of perspective and so different, at least a little, for every person living.

Even the measuring systems we impose on objective reality are simply us pushing our perspective on it. 105F is 41C is 314K. To most of us though it’s just “Too fucking hot!”

The simplest critique I can come up with for Tyson’s statement is, “Logic doesn’t care.”

I recently found William T. Sherman’s memoirs on Project Gutenberg. A very interesting read.

I recently found William T. Sherman’s memoirs on Project Gutenberg. A very interesting read.

One of the better memoirs to come out of the war. Grant’s benefited from having a good editor (Twain), but also pretty much skipped his life before the start of the Civil War.

All of them need to be taken with various sizes of grains of salt. Lots of self-aggrandizing, refighting the war, political/personal axes to grind, etc.* That’s one reason the biographies written 50+ years later are able to take a more even-handed approach.

* - Also an issue with WW2 scholarship. A lot of surviving German generals wrote books right after the war and made statements that about their political or personal opposition to Hitler. These really did not hold up once the various archives opened up to show that what they actually did and their statements do not match up.

Arkansas judge loses job over online comments about actress Charlize Theron

…Faulkner County Circuit Judge Michael Maggio admitted posting details from Theron’s closed-record adoption of a child in 2012 on “tigerdroppings.com,” a Louisiana State University fan site, using the online name “geauxjudge,” according to documents that a judicial commission submitted to the state Supreme Court.

Maggio commented in January 2012 that a friend of his handled a single-parent adoption case involving Theron, and that she came to court wearing a “long brown wig, oversized clothes” so as not to be recognized, the commission’s report says. He wrote online that he “offered to be the baby daddy,” documents said…

…The commission’s report includes five pages of comments Maggio made in the social media forum on other cases under the username “geauxjudge,” including statements on various aspects of gender, race and sexuality issues. The report concluded that he had violated at least 23 judicial codes…

…The Arkansas Supreme Court order prohibits Maggio from holding any judicial office in that state and orders him to be removed from office without pay.

It is pure ego, they think of themselves as being superior men.

Their theory seems to be that every civilization up until now only required governments because men were not socially evolved enough. They think that they are intelligent and “socially aware” enough to do without any government.

If they actually got their way I’d give it about a week, tops, before the killings started. :(

And they’re cool with that. They all suffer from ‘Meanest-Son-of-A-Bitch-in-The-Valley’ syndrome and so they believe they’ll survive just fine. They’re seriously over-estimating their odds.

Also, as I’ve noted before people adapt believe systems either as guidelines or excuses. Anarchy, I mean Libertarianism, is custom made as an excuse.

Drudge headline in tweet - “Koran books” found along border.

The story itself makes no mention of Korans but alleges that Muslim items were found. No photos or other evidence. Let’s just say I’m suspect that this is what they’re claiming.

Never mind that Midland, Texas is about 200 miles to the border. Yet, the sheriff there is claiming the following:

Midland County Sheriff Gary Painter said that law enforcement agencies along the “wide open” border have received alerts to be on the lookout for terrorists from the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria crossing into the United States.

Painter, who said he has worked along the border for “about eight years,” stated that alerts have been issued to border law enforcement to be on the lookout for suspicious terrorist activity, specifically involving ISIS cells being smuggled into the United States.

“I received an intelligence report that said that there was ISIS cells that were active in the Juarez area, which is the northern part of the Chihuahua state, and that they were moving around over there, that there was some activity…” Painter told Fox News. The report asked “for the sheriffs along the border to be on the alert, for all law enforcement to be on the alert, and to be on the lookout for these people maybe trying to come across.”

Yet, where’s the actual evidence of these alerts, warnings, texts, or other statements.

What’s more troubling is that ISIS could quite likely get a convert in the US to come over to their worldview, and that person would then carry out attacks - all without having to bother with a border crossing.

It’s the lone wolf scenario, which is far more difficult for LEOs to detect. But to Fox, it’s all about securing the border - even though no one among them offers up how to pay for any/all of it.

WND Columnist: Make The Quran Illegal

A bill should be brought before Congress identifying all passages in the Quran which, whether in isolation or taken together, constitute incitement to murder.

The bill should specify that anyone who reads any of these passages out loud is to be charged with that crime and, if convicted, subjected to the usual penalty for it - a long prison term.

The bill should state that, after a grace period of a year, every copy of the Quran must clearly identify by emboldened and different-colored text the passages that constitute criminal incitement to murder, together with a clearly printed warning on the first page that reading any of these passages out loud anywhere within the jurisdiction of the United States may result in prosecution.

The prominent part played by the Quran in the radicalization of young Muslims so that they become willing to murder their own fellow-citizens demands that we act at once, before its dangerous influence incites the loss of any more innocent lives. The Quran as it now stands is illegal.

1. The First Amendment, how the fuck does it work?

2. Can we write a similar bill highlighting all the violent passages in the Bible? Yeah, I thought so.

Hi all. I’m having a tough time getting moving today. I guess I did too much digging and moving dirt in my backyard yesterday. I was contouring some areas around my foundation where a couple of downspouts drain out. I was making sure there was enough grade up to the foundation instead of low spots where runoff would makes its way back. Anyway…. tired ass muscles. Ugh.

Just heard on some sports news that Vikings Adrian Peterson will be back practicing and playing this week.

The whole child abuse versus punishment thing is pretty heated and it looks like Peterson is getting some backing with the tough-love crowd.

Also, not to make it race related, but there does appear to be some backing from African-Americans athletes (like Charles Barkley and Tony Dungy) that there is nothing wrong with ‘whoopins’ as long as you don’t go too far. I guess what is ‘too far’ is in the eye of the parent.

I think some of the religious leaders really do know history and don’t want it to happen to them. So they are going to be as non accepting of any other religion as the old Europeans were accepting of other gods.

Researchers that have studied the spread of Catholicism west pretty much agree that Christianity got its foothold in Europe because of the ancient Europeans acceptance of the christian god as just another god in the pantheon of gods that were worshiped at that time. Most areas of worship just accepted another god among their poly-theistic believers. Then christianity started infiltrating from inside to get leaders, monarchs, and other rulers to accept the Only One God concept and mandate it throughout their realm.

I see many of these “others religion” scares as just them remembering what they did to achieve their dominance in the western world and afraid that tactic will be used on them.

The story itself makes no mention of Korans but alleges that Muslim items were found. No photos or other evidence. Let’s just say I’m suspect that this is what they’re claiming.

Never mind that Midland, Texas is about 200 miles to the border. Yet, the sheriff there is claiming the following:

Yet, where’s the actual evidence of these alerts, warnings, texts, or other statements.

What’s more troubling is that ISIS could quite likely get a convert in the US to come over to their worldview, and that person would then carry out attacks - all without having to bother with a border crossing.

It’s the lone wolf scenario, which is far more difficult for LEOs to detect. But to Fox, it’s all about securing the border - even though no one among them offers up how to pay for any/all of it.

A sheriff of a county that’s hundreds of miles from the border. From the article:

Painter noted that “Muslim” items have been strewn along the border and estimated that 10 to 15 million “undocumented aliens” have crossed the border.

“I think it’d be naive to say that (ISIS is) not here…We have found Muslim clothing, they have found Quran books that are lying on the side of the trail, so we know that there are Muslims that have come across and are being smuggled into the United States,” Painter told Fox News.

I had searched for koran, not the other spellings. It’s in there.

The problem is that it is anecdotal. He didn’t find anything. He’s probably relying on the same Fox News reports that claimed to find Muslim prayer rugs that turned out to be soccer gear.

What I think is going on is that some of these people think the border security/immigration issue is the most important issue above all others, so they’ll throw everything and the kitchen sink into the argument, including the potential that terrorists would cross into the country from Mexico, all in the hopes that the fear/threat would get more funding.

Updated: Midland County Sheriff will not seize arms if executive order passes

If a presidential executive order to collect guns from people’s homes is declared, Midland County Sheriff Gary Painter said he will not do so.

Painter made the remarks during a John Birch Society luncheon at the Midland Country Club on Thursday, one month after President Barack Obama announced gun control proposals in the wake of mass shootings across the country.

“No. 1, I don’t think executive orders are constitutional,” Painter said. “And No. 2, there’s gonna be one hell of a fight if they come and try to take guns out of my house.”

But according to Obama’s list of 23 executive actions found on the White House website, none explicitly state the seizure of weapons. Some of the executive actions refer to the federal background check system, and others refer to mental health.

Continues.

“His lack of understanding is just amazing and his spiritual confusion is just overwhelming,” Rios said on her American Family Radio program today. “He represents, I think, millions of American and British post-Christians who believe it’s ‘live and let live,’ it’s ‘coexist,’ it’s ‘whatever it takes to have peace among all men,’ not understanding that the Muslim faith is absolutely to blame for ISIL.”

Just last year… if I remember correctly, there were 25,000 people that they were able to apprehend other than Mexicans. That includes Chinese, Middle Easterners. If you know Middle Easterners, they look Mexican or like a lot of people in South America, and they mix in. … And those people, their only goal in life is to cause harm to the United States. … They have found prayer rugs, they have found copies of the Koran [in the desert], so that tells you this is not just, you know, poor illegals that are trying to come to this country to find work. It’s bigger than that.”

Cities fear violence as militia groups threaten to shut down border crossings

Border militias are threatening to block international ports of entry along the U.S.-Mexico border later this week to protest the jailing of a former Marine on Mexican weapons charges, and authorities fear the protests could spark violence.

The protest was launched by Stasyi Barth, a 41-year-old married mother of three from Lake Elsinore, California, who said she has been angry for years about illegal immigration but decided to take action after the Marine veteran’s arrest “kind of pushed it over the edge.”

Barth [and Chupp]…spent time in April at the Bundy Ranch and claims connections to the Oath Keepers, Militiamen, Three-Percenters, and other right-wing “patriot” groups -- will take part in protests along the California and Texas borders.

Barth, a former computer programmer who has been on disability for most of the last decade, isn’t sure how many people will take part in the protest, which she hopes will cause so much chaos governments will be forced to act on both sides of the border.

The Derp-meter just imploded.

Barry takes us to Texas and Arizona border counties where the numbers show little violent crime, but the sheriffs and politicians cry to high heaven about “spill over violence,” Korans found on the border, and the threat of narco-Hezbollah conspiracies, for which there is no evidence.

But there he was in a debate last month, right wing radio jock and Washington Times columnist Jeffrey Kuhner, talking about the “thousands of prayer rugs and Korans” found strewn along the southern border, presumably left in haste by Islamic terrorists-to-be.

Oh. Excellent. By the way, anyone know what the best bio on TR is? I read the H.W Brands one on FDR which I thought was excellent. I thought Brands was fair. Don’t know if Brands is liberal, conservative, or what but he was fair to FDR.

David McCullough wrote “Mornings On Horseback,” about TR’s early life from 10 to 27. It was interesting, but paled in comparison to his “The Path Between The Seas,” re the French and US construction of the Panama Canal.

In “The Path,” there’s good background on how involved TR was in creating the country of Panama out of sovereign Colombia land.

The Path Between The Seas is a good read.

On a second thought, nah. The links here will be useful for future reference. Or if anyone wants to make a page using them, you’re welcome.

Edmund Morris’s TR “trilogy” is very good: The Rise of Theodore Roosevelt, Theodore Rex & Colonel Roosevelt.

I’m sure they don’t mind about giving up the funds for this sale…

What I found interesting was the reporter in your linked article called the statement on TeeSpring a rumor. The statement is real and hardly a rumor: the proceeds were to go to the organization. If it isn’t true, it is a lie that reflects poorly on these crowd sourced fundraisers. You’d think a good reporter would at least check with Teespring.

Re: the prosecutor raising money for Darren Wilson

I am not surprised. It’s the South. Justice works differently if you’re black or brown. Always has.

And I am not surprised either. It never occurred to you that such a manifest impropriety might not be for real. And on top of that, Missouri is not “the South”. Unless you’re going to classify, oh, Maryland, Delaware, and DC as “the South” too.
