Bobby Jindal Attacks Father of Oregon Shooter: “A Complete Failure as a Father”

How low will they go?
Politics • Views: 52,402

Republican presidential candidates are competing to see who can say the most heartless, reprehensible things today about the gun massacre at Oregon’s Umpqua Community College.

First, Ben Carson blamed the victims for not defending themselves.

And now, Louisiana Governor Bobby Jindal (a creationist like Ben Carson), has issued a statement at his website that actually goes a step further into awfulness: We Fill Our Culture With Garbage, and We Reap the Result.

Jindal rages against America’s entertainment culture, bashing video games, popular music and films, and of course brings abortion into it as well.

Our music does the same thing, we promote evil, we promote the degradation of women, we flaunt the laws of God and common decency and we promote it all and we flood our young people with it.

We have generations of young boys who were raised on video games where they compete with other young boys around the country and the world to see who can kill the most humans. We make it so fun, so realistic, so sensational.

We devalue human life, we have no regard for the sanctity of human life in any regard, from the unborn, to the old, and to every single person in between, we devalue it and act as if we have almost no regard for humanity.

But in the most despicable section of this rant, Jindal actually attacks the father of the Oregon shooter because he spoke out on the need for better gun control laws. Jindal calls him “a complete failure as a father.”

Now, let’s get really politically incorrect here and talk specifically about this horror in Oregon. This killer’s father is now lecturing us on the need for gun control and he says he has no idea how or where his son got the guns.

Of course he doesn’t know. You know why he doesn’t know? Because he is not, and has never been in his son’s life. He’s a complete failure as a father, he should be embarrassed to even show his face in public. He’s the problem here.

He brags that he has never held a gun in his life and that he had no idea that his son had any guns. Why didn’t he know? Because he failed to raise his son. He should be ashamed of himself, and he owes us all an apology.

This is simply a stunning lack of empathy from someone who boasts often about his extreme piety. Some of this is probably due to Jindal’s need to make himself seem as extreme as Donald Trump to compete with him for the far right voting base; but not all. No one could write these things down and put them in the record if they didn’t believe them.

And it’s interesting that Jindal chooses to attack the boy’s father — when his mother stockpiled weapons and was paranoid that the government was going to take away her guns.

According to multiple reports, the shooter’s mother boasted online about her arsenal and feared that gun ownership would soon be restricted.

“When the mood strikes,” Harper reportedly wrote on Facebook, “I sling an AR, Tek-9 or AK over my shoulder, or holster a Glock 21 (not 22), or one of my other handguns, like the Sig Sauer P226, and walk out the door.” Shotguns, she said, “are a little too cumbersome to open carry.”

According to officials, the Harper family moved from Torrance, California to Winchester, Oregon, in 2013. “I moved from So. Calif. to Oregon, from Southern Crime-a-mania to open carry,” Harper noted in that same Facebook post advocating for open carry laws.

Harper, a registered nurse who shared an apartment with her son, spoke “openly about her love of guns,” according to one of her patients.

“She said she had multiple guns and believed wholeheartedly in the Second Amendment and wanted to get all the guns she could before someone outlawed them,” Shelly Steele told the New York Daily News.

The problem is that far too goddamn often, this sort of assholery is a political advantage rather than a political detriment.

As I’ve said before, we are still a country that subsists on spite, and crossing that with our gun fetishism means a lot of audience for this sort of shit.

And I predict by the time the day is through, someone will top this. Jindal really is a pathetic asshole. And as I pointed out downstairs, you should notice that he doesn’t attack the shooter’s mother who like Bobby and the nuts that dominate his party was a bigoted gun fetishist but nope he attacks the parent who was actually horrified by what happened. He’s a pathetic lunatic.

OTOH, as a “leader” - yes, he’s a complete failure.

It’s shocking how low Republicans can go. It’s like they have zero empathy and no working filter. Whatever is in their bigoted mind gets vomited out.

Can you imagine Jindal or Trump as President in the most powerful country in the world? The Horror!

re: #11 Eclectic Cyborg

Bobby Jindal is a complete failure as a human being.

Not completely true, he’ll never be president. That’s an accomplishment. But really this guy continues to disgust me. Really, the GOP establishment and “moderates” can try to tell themselves that Trump’s the only problem but here you got a two term governor basically shitting on a father horrified by his son’s acts. This is the kind of man little Bobby is. He I bet you good money has never shot a gun outside of a political ad or political event and yet because he’s a pathetic hack feels the nerve to attack this man because this guy dared to criticize the precious gun. We’re talking about a man who is running for president and a living beneficiary of birthright citizenship who came out against it. Bobby really wants white supremacists to ignore that he’s Indian-American by sounding like a white supremacist. How’s that for being politically incorrect.

HappyWarrior  Oct 6, 2015 • 12:55:44pm

What’s sad is Jeb Bush may have had the “least” offensive comments about this. I use that very loosely obviously.

16
Blind Frog Belly White  Oct 6, 2015 • 12:58:00pm

Jindal is transparently flailing. In 2012, he said the GOP has to stop being the Stupid Party, but that didn’t work out. This year, he started by trying to be a reasonable alternative, a guy who’d run a state, etc, but he was still relegated to the Kid’s Table. So, he tried attacking Donald Trump, who ignored him. His attacks became more desperate, and still Trump ignores him.

Now he’s reduced to trying to get attention by saying crazy shit, hoping SOMEONE will look at him.

Right, I was just agreeing the fact that we have a conversation about which GOP said the most offensive thing about the Roseboro shooting iis quite teling about the state of the party. Seems like in the past, maybe there’d be one fringe candidate that would say something and nowadays it seems they all vie to out do each other. Great stuff. As someone who likes guns and as one of these law abiding gun owners, I support the following, in order of priority:
1. Background check on all sales.
2. Individual license to own or possess.
3. Move semi-auto guns to Class 3 with machine guns, suppressors, etc. (licensed with heavy background check, sheriff’s approval, sizable but not prohibitive fee, permanent registration with ATF.)

Speaking of Jindal, I can’t help but think, despite the dickishness of his latest comment, that he does more harm to this nation when he joins in with the likes of Trump on immigration.

This is not a problem that is going away soon and I think in other places of the world is just beginning to force changes in politics, usually for the more ugly.

Case in point from today:

Speaking at the annual Conservative party conference on Tuesday in Manchester, Home Secretary Theresa May defended Britain’s plan for resettling Syrian refugees from camps in the Middle East, a scheme that means opting out of a European Union plan designed to fairly redistribute refugees. Britain would not accept an E.U.-wide immigration and asylum policy “in a thousand years,” May explained.

May also argued more generally against the value of immigration. “Britain does not need net migration in the hundreds of thousands every year,” May warned, arguing that evidence showed “at best the net economic and fiscal effect of high immigration is close to zero.”

The home secretary also warned that when immigration was too high, “it’s impossible to build a cohesive society.”

I wonder how far towards the EDL and BNP the Tory-types in the UK will move?

This idea of “national identity” can’t be easily gotten rid of. In this country the likes of Jindal, who by any measure of historical perspective would be seen as “non-white”, plays towards the white-nationalist crowd because to him his theocratic vision sees only the cross symbol on those white robes of noted American racist organizations.

They know better. You had a former GOP rep today who now can speak freely without fear of the NRA running ads against him call out the ban on gun violence research that he championed. This is yet another reason why the Citizens United decision was a bad one and it’s another reason why the gun lobby are poisonous pricks. I am not a huge Hillary R. A good marker of this is this country’s continued love affair with the death penalty; it’s been proven that it has little to no deterrent value, it often costs more to carry out than a life sentence, is often given to minority defendants more than whites for comparable crimes, and is often given on the strength of shoddy/mishandled evidence and testimony.

Yet, the death penalty is still legal in most of the US and the primary reason why it is and is still given is real simple: Americans love retribution and revenge.

Indeed.

I’m not sure how the law in Michigan is written, but by any reasonable standard this would constitute “Reckless Discharge of a Firearm”. The individual was in no danger herself, no other individual was in danger, and firing created a greater danger than doing nothing.

The ONLY positive that I see is that nobody was hurt in this fiasco. It could have ended quite differently.

Absolutely. In a viral video, 19-year-old Luke V. Gatti can be seen berating a cafeteria manager who has asked him to leave for openly carrying an alcoholic beverage.

The video begins with Gatti pushing the manager and demanding bacon jalapeño mac and cheese even though the kitchen has sold out of the dish.

Kids in Japan and the UK play the same violent video games and watch the same violent movies. They even have crazy people who would go berserk and try to murder others in large numbers. What is missing here, though? Why is the toll so much lower? Why can’t Jindal and millions of others figure it out?

I’ve heard Rightwingers claim that countries which have much lower gun violence rates don’t have significant black populations which explains everything. **wink wink** Remember Charlton Heston’s comments in “Bowling for Columbine”.
“Earlier, when Heston explains the high number of U.S. handgun killings by saying, ‘We have more mixed ethnicity here (than do other countries),’ Moore tries to force him to elaborate. Heston doesn’t.”

I was always completely gobsmacked to see those old images of lynchings and there are kids in the photos looking at the body swinging from a rope. And that is not all that long ago in America’s history.

You’re right.

I mixed it up with the fact that the HQ and gun museum are in Fairfax, VA.

I still think the argument could be made, given the overwhelming racism in the USA at the time (and still, now, I’d argue) that the NRA is just a later iteration of local militias and groups set up to quash slave rebellions. Not so much in NY, but in the South, you betcha.

(I’ve been reading Ed Baptist’s “The Half Has Never Been Told” and with each page, getting ever more uncomfortable with how much slavery is wrapped up in American history, economics and society.)

I think lynchings where the whole community turned out were among the last gasps of that rather barbaric type of culture. Not that there aren’t people who wouldn’t enjoy watching someone (especially someone they feared) being killed, but there is an increased sense that it isn’t socially acceptable.
Executions are now extremely ritualized, but in a far less public fashion. I really don’t think most people today would react in the same way as those in the past who grew up seeing executions used to.

dholmes32  Oct 6, 2015 • 2:56:10pm

My brother’s favorite thing to do is to make mac and cheese. We live in Arizona, so it’s definitely a winter thing (although he did break down and make some in July). He likes putting different things in it. When he was visiting our sister in Houston (and I was here in AZ taking care of the critters), he made a well-praised fresh crab mac and cheese that was apparently to die for.

Now that it’s getting cooler, I’m going to have to entice him to get creative with his mac and cheese.

De-lurking because I just have to say what a stunning asshat of a human Bobby Jindal is. And this:

We devalue human life, we have no regard for the sanctity of human life in any regard, from the unborn, to the old, and to every single person in between, we devalue it and act as if we have almost no regard for humanity.

Could he possibly be any more lacking in self awareness? His is the party that wants no assurance of health care, no prenatal care, no guarantee of enough food for kids and their parents to eat, no safety net for the young, elderly, or certainly anyone in between. No, Bobby Jindal, you and your fellow Republicans certainly do not have any regard for the sanctity of human life in any regard. You’ve demonstrated that repeatedly. And eff you for attacking the shooter’s father as you did.

We are a self-selected (except when Stinky has to do some culling) group of people, majority but not exclusively male, mostly not too young, who are educated (not necessarily formally, but self taught and well read), and have a very strong bent towards rational thinking and modernism.

So it is no wonder that we look upon Jindal and Cruz and Trump and their ilk as being woefully short of anything that approaches the quality of a leader America needs.

But there appears to be a large group of Americans who really are clinging to their Bibles and Guns. They vacillate between being in fortress mode and being on the offense, but in Jindal and Trump we can say they are on the offense now.

It is a very reactionary movement. When I say we all evolved from pond scum they squirm. When I say that American history is full of violence and even genocide, they squirm. When I say we ought to license their guns … they fight back.

Nice! Myself, I can’t play a note. WRT firearms, I have a Taurus 7-shot .357 magnum revolver (“Now I know what you’re thinking. Did he fire 6 shots, or only 5?” Doesn’t matter, I’ve got SEVEN!); a Winchester 9422 lever action rifle in .22LR, and a Lyman Plains Rifle in .50 caliber. The last is known among my friends as ‘Doug’s Pop Gun’ for its tendency to only work well at the range.

I don’t know how many of you are on Facebook - I dislike it but still use it at times - but we all have many relatives, some farther than others - with whom we eventually connect.

And some of mine have quite different views of the world than I.

On the whole, my experience so far is that my large, loosely knit circle of Americana are not much into Trump. A bunch of them hate Obama, but they are not into Trump. I’ve not seen them coalesce around any single Republican. OTOH I have one person in my timeline who is a big Sanders supporter. No Hillary supporters that I know, save perhaps one who doesn’t post hardly ever.

Notice that he starts out by saying how good it was for his website traffic and his popularity to get banned from Twitter. Apparently he doesn’t quite get that libel suits are supposed to show that you’ve been damaged materially by being “libeled.” Chuck is sabotaging his own case by bragging about how great it was that Twitter banned him.

January 1945, Inland, hand stamped M1, original barrel, lots of rebuild parts. Shot pattern is centered well but strings badly even on a cold barrel. Similar ones on gunbroker are $800 - 900.

I can shoot the Arisaka much more accurately and with a good bullet will take anything in North America (well, somethings would leave me with less wiggle room than I’d like but I digress…)

Sure, anything in North America NOW….

I have far too many guns to list them all without looking like a complete fucking lunatic. The only one I actually want to sell is a 1918 Erfurt Luger P08, but I can’t because it was a gift. Most of my guns were either inherited or gifts. The Luger is in fair condition for its age but I’m just kind of over it. Doesn’t help that it looks like a Nazi gun even though it well predates that bullshit.

My favorite guns are probably the Marlin 39A and 39A Mountie in .22lr, Inland .30 Carbine M1, Browning Double Auto 12 gauge IC, and the S&W model 60 no-dash .38spl.

I can understand about the Luger. I had a Mauser C96 that I got over really quickly too. After I’d dropped $$$ for refurbishing. Fortunately I could sell it for what I had in it.

The one firearm I want is a nice S&W Model 10 or 13 with 4” pencil barrel. I prefer .38 special but the option for magnums in the woods would be nice.

If I get a really good price selling the carbine, I might be able to get one of them and the guitar.

Gina studied design, communications, and psychology in college. She eventually earned two master’s degrees and a Ph.D.. Dr. Loudon wrote her dissertation on her own theory contrasting Sternberg’s theory of love with the Maslovian hierarchical needs, and then applied it hermeneutically to existing data on relationship. Her original findings in her research are still being used today.

Her first master’s degree, from St. Louis University, was withheld from her for what she believed were political reasons, but it was eventually granted to her years later. This experience opened her eyes to political and social injustice.

This actually pleases the hell out of me.

(KUTV) A professor of sociology backed out of a speaking engagement at BYU’s Law and Religion Symposium, citing the school’s policy that prohibits students from leaving The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.

In a letter to BYU’s International Center for Law and Religion Studies, Dr. Mark Juergensmeyer, Director of the Orfalea Center for Global and International Studies at UC Santa Barbara, told the school that he was unaware of BYU’s policy of expelling Mormon students who leave the faith.

kutv.com

If you say you want to leave the Mormon Church while you’re at BYU, it will be a honor code violation. You can get expelled. Not only that, BYU will not forward on your transcript to any other school as long as you are in trouble with the Honor Code. There is a hold on your records In order to get *right* with the Honor Code, you have to present yourself as a member of the Mormon Church in good standing. So what people end up doing is keeping the secret of their disaffection until they have their degree in hand, or attempt to transfer to another school without raising suspicions, or getting sealed copies of their transcripts so they can make the transfer without BYU’s authority.

The real irony is that Mormon church leaders have made a big point of talking about “religious liberty” (I’m looking at you, Dallin H. Oaks, in particular), but they don’t grant liberty to BYU students who don’t want to be Mormon any more. So yeah, happy this is big news.

Broken arm, Day 6:
Had the appointment with the bone doc this afternoon. Got new X-rays and everything looks good (except for the fact that there are TWO fractures, one vertical up into the ball of the humerus, and the other sorta horizontal and perpendicular to that fracture, but not connected to it).
Only use the sling when I’m “out in public”, which in my case would probably be whenever I step outside since I only go out in public technically maybe every week or two. Work on range of motion exercises (I’m familiar with those as a result of PT for a shoulder prob a couple of years ago).
They asked if I wanted more hydrocodone. Oh, hells NO! That stuff is monstrous. Turns out that OTC Aleeve is working just fine for me today without the horrid side effects.
I’ve lost 10 pounds, but the pain issues (in general) are much improved and I was even able to put on a clean tee shirt (all by myself) for today’s appointment (yay me!)
I go back in five weeks. No lifting anything until then (if then).

Hope you heal quickly!

Jindal: “Shallow and simple minded liberals” blame “pieces of hardware” for mass shootings bit.ly pic.twitter.com

We don’t blame the hardware per se but, rather, the callous fools who make it so readily available to every violent nutcase out there. Mental health could stand some attention in this country, but it is no substitute for a little control over the instruments of homicide. Suppose I went over the deep end and decided to, say, nuke Lubbock. The city would still be in no danger unless someone were so careless as to let me have a nuclear bomb. Not the same as a mass shooting with an AR-15? It is if you’re one of the victims.
I am not proposing that we keep the same control over small arms that we do over nuclear weapons, I am merely demonstrating that we do have the right and the obligation to apply whatever level of control is reasonable and necessary.

I ordered the Gotoh bridge from Stew-Mac, but that’s about the limit of my repair abilities. I may try to do the nut job (that doesn’t sound right).

It’s not difficult, but you need a good, sharp X-Acto knife and a set of small files in case you need to deepen the string grooves (Stew-Mac sells a set for around $60, but I went to a local hardware store and found pretty much the same set for $7). And a good glue to attach the nut to the neck, and a sanding block to lower the entire height of the nut (so your strings don’t go sharp from having to push them down further than need be).

I play a Celtic harp…not too badly.

Weapons here include a bolt action Eddystone Enfield .30-06, a lever action .30-30, a .45 Thompson in for repairs right now, a ChiCom PLA modified SKS rifle, a nice little semi auto.22 and a flintlock Brown Bess musket and a Windless Steelcrafts basket hilt claymore sword.

the only ones that get paraded around in public are the sword and the musket.

OT, in today’s category of unexpected bliss: after months of ridiculously hot weather in the days that’s nearly as hot in the nights, I sit in front of the PC with my fan turned to max, earphones plugged in with the sound of Phil Collins tunes playing as I switch between browsers and work documents.
So there I am, midway through the song ‘I Wish it Would Rain Down,” thinking the very same thing as the song’s title (cold weather not expected for another month at least), when suddenly the scent of petrichor (smell of rain) spreads across the room. I question my very sanity for a moment, until pausing the player and realizing that the music and rain ambiance has masked the real deal - lo and behold, the glorious, splendid sight of actual freaking rain coming down!
Is it wrong that something so seemingly trivial can make a grown man genuinely jump up in down in utter joy?

Ted Cruz slams president for ‘politicizing’ Oregon massacre

NASHUA, N.H. — Republican U.S. Sen. Ted Cruz blasted President Obama’s remarks in the wake of an Oregon community college massacre that mass shootings are “something we should politicize” after a campaign stop here today.

“It seems there is no tragedy the president isn’t willing to politicize,” said Cruz. “He in many ways is following the dictum of his former Chief of Staff Rahm Emanuel who said, ‘You never want to waste a good crisis.’ Literally as this madman, almost within minutes of ending his murderous spree, the president seized upon it to advance his partisan political agenda. That’s just wrong.”

Cruz called reports the shooter at Umpqua Community College in Oregon specifically targeted Christians “deeply troubling.”

Cruz said Obama should instead be focused on “lifting up” the victims’ families.

“We’ve seen this over and over again where the president takes the actions of a madman and a lunatic and tries to use it as an excuse to impinge upon the rights of law-abiding citizens,” said Cruz.

Assholes are like clockwork. And I notice he cries about Obama “politizing” it but not a single word for those who want to make this just about Christians or his fellow clerical fascist Huckabee who blamed the lack of prayer for the shooting. Still though, Jindal’s and Carson have the gold and silver so far for me. Jindal for attacking a father who clearly feels terrible for what his son did and Carson for belittling the victims.

And in breaking news from China…

A section of a new glass-bottomed walkway at Yuntai Mountain Geological Park in Henan Province, China, cracked at around 5 p.m. Monday afternoon, causing the tourists on it to understandably freak out.

Lee Dong Hai, a tourist who was on the walkway, posted on the social media site Weibo: “I was almost at the end and suddenly I heard a sound. My foot shook a little. I looked down and I saw that there was a crack in the floor.” …. The walkway is suspended at a height of about 1,080 meters, or 3,543 feet.

And not after 2001, since we’ve been in the War On Terror. So, maybe 1990-2000?

They don’t want to say it, and maybe they don’t even really understand that this is true, but what they mean is when white American men had no competition. Women were relegated to the home, or at best nursing, teaching, and secretarial work. Minorities were kept in their own neighborhoods and the idea of integration was still not on the horizon. Our incomes kept rising, and we were able to buy more and better stuff all the time.

And taxes were VERY progressive, corporations paid a significant chunk of tax receipts, and unions were strong, and everyone was reaping the benefits of collective bargaining.

The correct reading of the second amendment by (Sadly) only four justices. From Digby’s blog digbysblog.blogspot.com

Stevens, J., dissenting
SUPREME COURT OF THE UNITED STATES, No. 07-290
DISTRICT OF COLUMBIA, et al., PETITIONERS v. DICK ANTHONY HELLER
on writ of certiorari to the United States Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia Circuit [June 26, 2008]

Justice Stevens, with whom Justice Souter, Justice Ginsburg, and Justice Breyer join, dissenting.

The question presented by this case is not whether the Second Amendment protects a “collective right” or an “individual right.” Surely it protects a right that can be enforced by individuals. But a conclusion that the Second Amendment protects an individual right does not tell us anything about the scope of that right.

Guns are used to hunt, for self-defense, to commit crimes, for sporting activities, and to perform military duties. The Second Amendment plainly does not protect the right to use a gun to rob a bank; it is equally clear that it does encompass the right to use weapons for certain military purposes. Whether it also protects the right to possess and use guns for nonmilitary purposes like hunting and personal self-defense is the question presented by this case. The text of the Amendment, its history, and our decision in United States v. Miller, 307 U. S. 174 (1939), provide a clear answer to that question.

The Second Amendment was adopted to protect the right of the people of each of the several States to maintain a well-regulated militia. It was a response to concerns raised during the ratification of the Constitution that the power of Congress to disarm the state militias and create a national standing army posed an intolerable threat to the sovereignty of the several States. Neither the text of the Amendment nor the arguments advanced by its proponents evidenced the slightest interest in limiting any legislature’s authority to regulate private civilian uses of firearms. Specifically, there is no indication that the Framers of the Amendment intended to enshrine the common-law right of self-defense in the Constitution.

In 1934, Congress enacted the National Firearms Act, the first major federal firearms law.1 Upholding a conviction under that Act, this Court held that, “n the absence of any evidence tending to show that possession or use of a ‘shotgun having a barrel of less than eighteen inches in length’ at this time has some reasonable relationship to the preservation or efficiency of a well regulated militia, we cannot say that the Second Amendment guarantees the right to keep and bear such an instrument.” Miller, 307 U. S., at 178. The view of the Amendment we took in Miller—that it protects the right to keep and bear arms for certain military purposes, but that it does not curtail the Legislature’s power to regulate the nonmilitary use and ownership of weapons—is both the most natural reading of the Amendment’s text and the interpretation most faithful to the history of its adoption.

Since our decision in Miller, hundreds of judges have relied on the view of the Amendment we endorsed there;2 we ourselves affirmed it in 1980. See Lewis v. United States, 445 U. S. 55, n. 8 (1980).3 No new evidence has surfaced since 1980 supporting the view that the Amendment was intended to curtail the power of Congress to regulate civilian use or misuse of weapons. Indeed, a review of the drafting history of the Amendment demonstrates that its Framers rejected proposals that would have broadened its coverage to include such uses.

The opinion the Court announces today fails to identify any new evidence supporting the view that the Amendment was intended to limit the power of Congress to regulate civilian uses of weapons. Unable to point to any such evidence, the Court stakes its holding on a strained and unpersuasive reading of the Amendment’s text; significantly different provisions in the 1689 English Bill of Rights, and in various 19th-century State Constitutions; postenactment commentary that was available to the Court when it decided Miller; and, ultimately, a feeble attempt to distinguish Miller that places more emphasis on the Court’s decisional process than on the reasoning in the opinion itself.

Even if the textual and historical arguments on both sides of the issue were evenly balanced, respect for the well-settled views of all of our predecessors on this Court, and for the rule of law itself, see Mitchell v. W. T. Grant Co., 416 U. S. 600, 636 (1974) (Stewart, J., dissenting), would prevent most jurists from endorsing such a dramatic upheaval in the law.4 As Justice Cardozo observed years ago, the “labor of judges would be increased almost to the breaking point if every past decision could be reopened in every case, and one could not lay one’s own course of bricks on the secure foundation of the courses laid by others who had gone before him.” The Nature of the Judicial Process 149 (1921).

In this dissent I shall first explain why our decision in Miller was faithful to the text of the Second Amendment and the purposes revealed in its drafting history. I shall then comment on the postratification history of the Amendment, which makes abundantly clear that the Amendment should not be interpreted as limiting the authority of Congress to regulate the use or possession of firearms for purely civilian purposes.

I

The text of the Second Amendment is brief. It provides: “A well regulated Militia, being necessary to the security of a free State, the right of the people to keep and bear Arms, shall not be infringed.”

Three portions of that text merit special focus: the introductory language defining the Amendment’s purpose, the class of persons encompassed within its reach, and the unitary nature of the right that it protects.

“A well regulated Militia, being necessary to the security of a free State”

The preamble to the Second Amendment makes three important points. It identifies the preservation of the militia as the Amendment’s purpose; it explains that the militia is necessary to the security of a free State; and it recognizes that the militia must be “well regulated.” In all three respects it is comparable to provisions in several State Declarations of Rights that were adopted roughly contemporaneously with the Declaration of Independence.5 Those state provisions highlight the importance members of the founding generation attached to the maintenance of state militias; they also underscore the profound fear shared by many in that era of the dangers posed by standing armies.6 While the need for state militias has not been a matter of significant public interest for almost two centuries, that fact should not obscure the contemporary concerns that animated the Framers.

The parallels between the Second Amendment and these state declarations, and the Second Amendment ‘s omission of any statement of purpose related to the right to use firearms for hunting or personal self-defense, is especially striking in light of the fact that the Declarations of Rights of Pennsylvania and Vermont did expressly protect such civilian uses at the time. Article XIII of Pennsylvania’s 1776 Declaration of Rights announced that “the people have a right to bear arms for the defence of themselves and the state,” 1 Schwartz 266 (emphasis added); §43 of the Declaration assured that “the inhabitants of this state shall have the liberty to fowl and hunt in seasonable times on the lands they hold, and on all other lands therein not inclosed,” id., at 274. And Article XV of the 1777 Vermont Declaration of Rights guaranteed “[t]hat the people have a right to bear arms for the defence of themselves and the State.” Id., at 324 (emphasis added). The contrast between those two declarations and the Second Amendment reinforces the clear statement of purpose announced in the Amendment’s preamble. It confirms that the Framers’ single-minded focus in crafting the constitutional guarantee “to keep and bear arms” was on military uses of firearms, which they viewed in the context of service in state militias.

The preamble thus both sets forth the object of the Amendment and informs the meaning of the remainder of its text. Such text should not be treated as mere surplusage, for “t cannot be presumed that any clause in the constitution is intended to be without effect.” Marbury v. Madison, 1 Cranch 137, 174 (1803). […]

Deconstructing a relic:

Uncovering the sources of DNA found on the Turin Shroud

Just amazing. I was impressed by the number of DNA strands they were able to identify. Fun for me that they were able to do so much analysis and still be unable to date the shroud with confidence. Considering the booming trade in relics during the Middle Ages it’s surprising that there aren’t warehouses full of things like this.

I have never had Mormons visit me. If they did, I’d rip ‘em to shreds and ask them how different they are from Scientologists, Jehovah’s Witnesses, Assemblies of God, and Seventh Day Adventists.

Last time the JW rolled by here was in the Spring. It was still a little chilly, so I was wearing my Manic Street Preachers ‘Holy Bible’ hoodie. One of the women said ‘Judging by your hoodie (with a cross over the heart nd ‘The Holy Bible’ emblazoned across the back), you look like you’re interested in religion.’

I said ‘Yeah, not exactly’ and explained that MSP was a rock band, at which point they left and to this date haven’t been back.

I always have this issue with them with transfusions, where they claim it’s eating blood, which is prohibited by their interpretation of the Bible.

I’ll flat out ask them if they are Jehovah’s Witnesses, and if they respond in the affirmative, I tell them I have problems with their theology, and that usually puts the end to it.

Don’t they have earthquakes fairly frequently there? Absolutely out of their minds!

My husband used to love to invite them in and discuss theology until they were glad to go and never come back. I used to hide upstairs while that was going on.

I’m sick of these people. Boobie Jindal, Ben Carson, and that idiot from Breitfart can all go fuck themselves. They are all horrible excuses of human beings. We really need to do something about the sociopaths on our airwaves, our business sector and in our government.
