A Shameful Episode: Dozens of States Refuse Syrian Refugees, as Texas GOPer Says It’s Too Easy for Them to Buy Guns

European Union officials have now announced that all of the Paris attackers identified so far were actually EU nationals — not Syrian refugees.
But as you can see from the map above, there are now at least 28 states in which governors have indicated they’ll refuse to admit Syrian refugees. This has to be one of the most disgraceful episodes of blatantly dishonest right wing fear-mongering in recent history; and it’s guaranteed that all of these politicians turning their backs on people fleeing oppression and war call themselves “pious Christians.”
But the reality is, none of these “pious Christians” can legally do a thing to stop Syrian refugees from being resettled in their states.
“This is a federal program carried out under the authority of federal law and refugees arriving in the United States are protected by the Constitution and federal law,” a senior State Department official told reporters on a conference call, when asked about the governors’ statements. Simply put, once a refugee has come to the United States, “he or she is also free to move anywhere in the country,” just like anyone else. And there’s nothing Bobby Jindal or Chris Christie can do about it.
The State Department also said, however, that they won’t send refugees to states where they’re not welcome, because the resettlement program depends on the good will of the community. So by showing open hostility to the refugees and signaling to their constituents to do the same, these governors will probably get what they want anyway.
In one of the most absurd and hypocritical arguments against accepting refugees, an NRA-backed Texas state legislator says his state should refuse them because it’s too easy for them to buy guns in Texas.
Rep. Tony Dale (R) made this argument in a television interview on Monday and in letters to Texas’ U.S. Sens. John Cornyn and Ted Cruz (R) and U.S. Reps. Michael McCaul and John Carter (R).
“While the Paris attackers used suicide vests and grenades,” Dale wrote, “it is clear that firearms also killed a large number of innocent victims. Can you imagine a scenario were [sic] a refugees [sic] is admitted to the United States, is provided with federal cash payments and other assistance, obtains a drivers license and purchases a weapon and executes an attack?” He urged the lawmakers to “do whatever you can to stop the [Syrian refugee] program.”
