One person reportedly shot at Charlotte mall
By Steve Almasy, CNN
Updated 3:24 PM ET

Excerpt:

(CNN)An altercation in a store at a mall in Charlotte, North Carolina, led to gunfire and one person getting shot, Shauntelle Hamrick, the manager of the Journeys shoe store, told CNN.

Hamrick says she watched as a group of people “ganged up” on a man. During the fight, someone pulled a gun, and a friend of the man was shot.

Billionaire Hosting Ted Cruz Rally Called Gays Demented Predators Who Are Destroying America

A few days after Christmas, Religious Right leaders will gather in Texas to rally around Republican presidential candidate Ted Cruz.

Cruz and his wife are set to attend the gathering at a remote ranch owned by billionaire Farris Wilks, who is among Cruz’s most important Super PAC donors.

Wilks and his brother, Donald, have contributed millions to anti-LGBT hate groups, and Farris Wilks serves as pastor of the church founded by their father, The Assembly of Yahweh (7th Day).

“They want your children….But we’re in a war for our children. They want your children. So what will you teach your children? A strong family is the last defense.”

Charlotte Observer is indicating that this was an officer-involved shooting.

One person was killed Thursday afternoon in an officer-involved shooting at Northlake Mall in north Charlotte, authorities said.

It was not immediately clear who fired the fatal shot.

File photo: Shoppers filled the escalator at Northlake Mall on Black Friday. John D. Simmons jsimmons@charlotteobserver.com
Charlotte-Mecklenburg police said early information indicates an argument started inside the mall around 2 p.m. Thursday between two groups of people. Officers who were working off-duty at the mall arrived on the scene.

At least one person was shot during the altercation, police said. He was pronounced dead at the scene by Medic.

No officers were hurt, according to CMPD.

Northlake is located on the northwest corner of Interstate 77 and W.T. Harris Boulevard.

Witnesses said the shooting occurred in Journey’s, a store on the lower level of the mall near Dick’s Sporting Goods.

G’day my fellow Lizards,

Santa’s been and it’s Christmas morning here on the east coast of Australia.
We will have the best part of 20 friends and family here for lunch, and we are expecting it to be about 80 degrees.

There will be hot:
Roast lamb, roasted potatoes, boiled baby potatoes, cauliflower and cheese sauce and peas.

There will be cold:
Roast chicken, leg ham, prawns, bugs (crabs), potato salad and rice salad.

There will be stacks of nibblies and finger food.
Oh, and mandatory alcohol.

May Christmas we a wonderful happy and safe time for all of you and your families, even if they vote Republican and watch Fox news.

May I give you 2 songs by a wonderful Australian talent Tim Minchin.

The first is my favourite non Christian Christmas carol.

White Wine In The Sun
White Wine In The Sun by Tim Minchin

The second is a poignant piece on Feminism, Altruism and the Environment

Confessions In Three Movements
Tim Minchin - Confessions - Feminism, Poverty (Altruism), Environment

As always, seriously a huge thank you to our host.
Congratulations Charles great work and all the best for 2017.

I’m going to have to brave the grocery store today. I thought I had everything for tomorrow’s dinner. Then I checked on the “vegetable drawer” in the ‘fridge. When we get too much stuff in the main part it apparently blocks air circulation and things in the bottom get a little too cold.
So. Icy iceberg lettuce. Celery like a baseball bat. Fortunately the broccoli was uninjured and the carrots are expected to recover. Jury still out on the cauliflower.

If I’m not back in a few hours send the rescue team.

That reminds me of a bad joke my best childhood friend Jesse Finklestein (and he knew a lot of ‘em — his father was Don Rickles’ and Shecky Greene’s insurance agent, among many other borscht belt comics) told me back in junior high:

Q: How can you tell that the Cartwright’s from “Bonanza” were Jewish?

A: It was four adult men who lived at their parents’ house who ate Chinese food on Christmas.

Thank you, I’ll see myself out. And don’t try the veal, it’s dreadful.

Once, on a forum largely populated by Conservatives, I posted what I thought should be a statement we could all agree on - that the quality of the elementary and high school education one receives should not be a function of where one lives.

I was listening to NPR the other day. They were talking about a recording of a night club performance by Frank Sinatra, Dean Martin, and Sammy Davis Jr, from about 1962. They pointed out that two white guys performing with a black guy, at the time, was groundbreaking. But the whole time, Sinatra and to a lesser extent Martin are saying things like, “Get outta here!” to Davis, and then the songs that are performed are really racist - like ‘Me And My Shadow’, with Sinatra and Davis.

If you tried to do a show like that today, it would be considered totally racist, but at the time it was considered the cutting edge of good race relations.

Actually… Frank Sinatra single-handedly ended segregation in Las Vegas when he refused to work or eat or visit at any casino that didn’t treat Sammy the same as the rest of the rat pack. He wouldn’t stand for his friend being told to enter through the back door, eat in the kitchen, etc…

That’s why it was so jarring to hear their actual material.

Missed all that. Wazzup?

Since we have already done our Christmas-by-the-Deb-calendar, I’m looking for a restaurant that’s open tomorrow. Interestingly, our one Indian place advertises “Halal Meats” prominently on its web page. Good sign.

There is always a difference between an on-stage persona and a real life person. Interesting to see to what extent they overlap.

Is Gonzalez a real cartoonist or is that a caricature of Ramirez?

Looks like a spoof of Ramirez

Relatively sure the artwork is by Matt Bors, that’s where I found it

I know it’s a cartoon by Bors.

Thanks, so I gathered. Bors nailed Ramirez’s style.

Trump almost certainly has trusted his tweeting to a churlish minion. If a mogul/candidate/celebrity is spending that much effort on mean-girl stuff, he’s around the bend.

I’ve maintained a chaste ignorance of his love life. In a year I can go back to ignoring him altogether.

How pathetic that on Christmas Eve he doesn’t have anything else to do. I almost feel sorry for him.

Once, on a forum largely populated by Conservatives, I posted what I thought should be a statement we could all agree on - that the quality of the elementary and high school education one receives should not be a function of where one lives.

Nope. Couldn’t get them to agree to that.

Of course not; their taxes should only pay for first rate education for their kids, not to subsidize the education of those people.
