Tech Note: Facebook Broke Their Embedded Posts, So Here’s a New Way to Include Them

Fixing things broken by others
LGF • Views: 73,957

Good old Facebook. Sometime in the last few days, they changed the way their embedded posts and video work, and the old method no longer works at all.

Previously, we let you embed a Facebook post or video in a comment or LGF Page simply by copying and pasting the address of the Facebook post; but thanks to someone in their development squad, this is no longer possible.

So here’s the new deal with embedding Facebook posts and video at LGF. Instead of copying and pasting the URL, you need to copy the embed code from the Facebook post and paste that into a comment instead. Don’t use the Embedded Content button - just paste the embed code supplied by Facebook directly into your comment or LGF Page.

Here’s a screenshot showing where the embed code is located in a Facebook post:

(I’m leaving our old code in place as well, just in case this is a temporary bug that gets fixed. This Facebook change has to be affecting lots of other sites as well, so maybe they’ll at least continue to support their old method for backward compatibility once they realize they messed up.)

Speaking of police recordings, the mysterious person behind the police scanning website in Minnesota passed away:

Citizens by the thousands learned about the movements of law enforcement because of the site; newsrooms also benefited.

By the way, here’s another quick tech note while I’m at it - if you want to post a tweet that’s replying to another tweet, but not include the original tweet, just add “?hide” to the end of the tweet’s URL, like this:

https://twitter.com/Green_Footballs/status/752283210558517248?hide

If there’s already something at the end of tweet preceded by a question mark, use an ampersand instead. For example:

https://twitter.com/Green_Footballs/status/752283210558517248?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw&hide

This is what it looks like without the “?hide” option:

And here it is with the option:

Obvious disclaimer that I am not a police officer, but I could imagine an officer passing by and wanting another look. Granted, it’s a stretch, but if you’re on the lookout for a suspect and you get a glimpse of somebody that merits another look, you do have to get yourself another look at the guy. Still no excuse for shooting the man.

As someone who was once a semi-competent programmer, and who taught it for a long time, I’m at a loss as to why an operation like Facebook makes it’s API so cryptic, poorly documented and subject to change at whim.

From a business / branding / clicks perspective I would think that they would want the broadest possible exposure driving people to their site.

It’s maddening to deal with. It’s hard enough just to figure things out so you can use the API, but then they make seemingly pointless changes like this at regular intervals and break stuff.

The “point” was probably to leave some sort of physical evidence of the officer’s presence on the car. Which dashcams and bodycams take of nowadays.

It ties them to the car in case they ran into trouble with the person they pulled over. If the car is stopped for a major crime, the fingerprints might come up. I never heard it myself, so I am wondering if that was an old police trick that was looked for if need be.

You’ve spent almost eight years inside what is arguably the most powerful institution on Earth. Do you come away more or less optimistic about humanity’s ability to deal with its problems?

I come away more optimistic, and that’s in large measure due to the extraordinary leadership that President Obama has provided. I have felt for many decades that science, technology and innovation are crucial if human society is to get its arms around the biggest challenges we face. And I’ve had the pleasure of working for a president for nearly eight years now who shares that view.

I’ve not found a single instance yet whilst looking for it since it initially was suggested here, but found lots of urban legend links.

When I was 13 I had two cop cars pull up on the sidewalk to pincer me, sirens and lights blazing. The cops jumped out, pulled their guns, and told me to get on the ground. I refused because I was in my new suit, having just walked around the corner from my church. Things would have gone downhill rapidly if not for my aunt across the street seeing what was happening and going 100% into angry tirade.

The excuse for three cops to point their guns at a 13 year old, 5 foot 5 inch, 110 pound glasses wearing black boy in a suit? I fit the description.

OH!!! I shared a life with a great dog who would bring dead skunks and would also dive into the creek to bring out crawdads every bit as large as that lobster.
Really, each end of the crawdad would hang out each side of Hogger’s mouth.

He was always so proud, no matter what he brought home.

Hogger on the left (a pit basset-chow) and his own pet dog Ellis (ELS=Little Shit Dog). They were inseparable and I miss them both every single day (plus Hogger’s mom, the basset chow, whom we rescued after she was shot in the head by her previous owner) and his dad (the AmStaff) —- all these years later.)

So many furry companions over the decades.
We never forget or miss a single one, and there are always memories that will bring a smile.

Thanks, Dave, for bring one back that have me and Mr BWS grinning like fools.

re: #82 b.d.

Honest question from ignorance.

Would Governor Abbot be in pain at all due to being paralyzed?

According to the story, he still has sensation in his legs, so yes.

I once gave myself a (tiny) second-verging-on-third degree burn when a covered coffee mug fell over and started squirting hot coffee onto my thumb. I couldn’t just drop the tray I was holding because reasons, and it took a couple of seconds (I think — your time sense doesn’t work really well in those circumstances) to get to a place where I could put it down and get my hand out of the flow. So I can see Abbot spilling something near-boiling onto his legs and taking a while to get out of the way. If he was wearing pants, they could keep cooking his legs while he did it. (And remember the notorious case of the woman with third degree burns requiring surgery from McDonald’s coffee.)

Needless to say the pizza got cold and he got sacked.

Off-duty St. Louis officer shoots intruder after Facebook argument
Tyler Gebhard threatened officer’s family, threw planter through window

Police said the off-duty officer, who was not identified, shot and killed 20-year-old Tyler Gebhard after he threw a 50-pound concrete planter through a window to enter the Lakeshire home, the St. Louis Post-Dispatch reported.

According to police, Gebhard was known to the family and had recently made online threats toward it and “uninvolved members of the community.”

St. Louis County Police Chief Jon Belmar said the officer is a three-year veteran of the department and has been placed on administrative leave pending the investigation of the incident. He declined to elaborate on the nature of the threats, citing the ongoing investigation.

An uncle of Gebhard, Patrick Brogan, 57, of Waterloo, Illinois, told the Post-Dispatch that Gebhard and the officer had been arguing on Facebook about Black Lives Matter. He said Gebhard, who was biracial, empathized with the group’s objectives but did not participate in protests.

Yeah throw a planter through my window to force your way in and you may well be met with gunfire.

And I can imagine that the “dispatch” tape is something they recorded after the fact, when they realized the broken taillight story had fallen apart.

re: #156 Great White Snark

Two quick stories. First, my brother was an electrical engineer and did consulting work and presentations and was getting sick of the travelling. So he flew to London and was booked on a return flight a couple hours later. The British customs agent asked him about it and he gave a smart ass answer that he doesn’t remember but he was escorted to his presentation, an officer sat in on it, and they brought him straight back to Heathrow. Another one was from high school. My German teacher used to take a group over to Germany each summer. The class before mine was the last because on of the kids couldn’t account for his cash and gave the East German border guard a smart ass answer. The whole group got detained for about 24 hours. No more trips to Germany.
Oh yeah, I had a neighbor who did government work. We were chatting about a stop in Egypt (on a cruise ship) and he let slip that he would love to go back to Egypt but there are a bunch of countries he’d better not go.
