Donald Trump Is Really Going to Hate SNL’s Third Debate Parody

I have to admit I don’t watch Saturday Night Live regularly any more; for me, they lost their comedy mojo years ago, and only rarely does it come back. But last night it made one of those rare appearances, in a very funny parody of the third debate featuring Tom Hanks as Chris Wallace and Alec Baldwin’s scathing Trump impression.

Democrats destroyed Republicans in the first day of early voting in Nevada, amassing a 13,500 raw vote lead and dominating in Clark County.

*sigh*

Today was not a good day for me. As some of you may know, I’ve been picketing the “church” Mark Driscoll started in Scottsdale after he abandoned his Mars Hill megachurch in Seattle two years ago. I’ve been out there all but four Sundays since he started this “church” at the end of March. Just standing on the sidewalk, mostly, holding a sign, occasionally talking to people.

You know, I didn’t get upset when he hired an off-duty Scottsdale cop to keep an eye on me. I was like, Ok, Mark, you’re excessively paranoid when it comes to a fat, middle-aged woman, but …yeah. The cop and I, we have an understanding. I stay on the sidewalk, and he gets paid his nice overtime courtesy of “The Trinity Church.”

Well, today, Driscoll and his church stepped on my last nerve when they deployed a volunteer security guy AND his kids to stand and wave at the parking lot entrance I stand at. I told the security guy two things: 1) I think people are going to think you’re with me and I don’t know that you want them to have that impression and 2) I really think it’s wrong to bring kids to an adult argument.

But I dealt with it before the first service. I, however, completely lost my cool when this volunteer brought the kids out to do the same thing before the second service. Those kids got to hear some of Mark Driscoll’s misogynistic greatest hits. I keep them in my bag for just such an occasion. The kids were at a distance, but they did get to hear me drop the f-bomb and the s-bomb when I was talking to another security guy. All I can say is that everything I’ve stored up over the last six-plus months I’ve been out on the sidewalk came pouring out. I was *furious*—you do not bring kids to an adult argument.

So people would say that I probably destroyed my witness among those people, that they think I’m crazy. Well, they probably thought I was a nutbar before that, and I will be the first person to say you have to be a bit touched in the head to stand in front a church Sunday in, Sunday out to try and get across to people that their pastor is a jackass. The only thing I’m really sorry about is that I cussed within earshot of kids.

So it’s no more Miss Nice mmmirele. Next Sunday, I’ll be out there with a (paper) megaphone and more of Mark Driscoll’s Greatest Hits of Misogyny. He’s got a cult going and I’m going to let people know it. And yes, I know I’m crazy. You don’t have to tell me!

My own experience with creationists (and Driscoll is definitely a teacher of creationism) is that their decision making in regards to beliefs is based on deep emotional needs and cannot be swayed by rational discussion.

In other words, Driscoll will always find plenty of marks.

And, given how we humans work, numbers count. Is there a way to transition your protest into engaging more people to help you?

Yeah, I was going to mark this down as “right for the wrong reasons.” Right because this feels like a monopoly that won’t benefit the public (AT&T already owns DirecTV, now they’re buying a cable company that recently just bought another one (TWC literally just merged with Charter), so they’re going to own the means of distribution and the several sources of content). Wrong because CNN being anti-Trump (or anyone else) isn’t the reason to stop a merger

Yes, but:

Donald Trump Gets First Major Endorsement in Las Vegas

With polls showing him sliding nationally, Donald J. Trump received a bit of welcome news in one battleground state on Sunday as the editorial page of Nevada’s largest newspaper, The Las Vegas Review-Journal, endorsed him for president.

However, the NYT is quick to point out:

It is the first major newspaper to give Mr. Trump its blessing, though it may come with something of an asterisk: The Review-Journal was bought late last year by the casino magnate and billionaire Sheldon Adelson, a Trump supporter and longtime Republican benefactor.

Plenty of other Republican-friendly newspapers have endorsed Clinton. What is different here is Adelson. It is quite clear that the editors of the LVRJ are doing Adelson’s bidding. Even the other Republican-owner newspapers let their editors do the writing, but the LVRJ editorial sounds like it is a paid anti-Hillary attack.

The purpose of which, of course, is to ensure the freedom of discourse in this country. I’m no fan of the rumor mill, but it’s tough to discuss even legitimate issues - such as, for instance, the current state of Drumpf - without incurring potential liability under a strict libel law.

One of the more surprising thing about our California ballot this year is the absence of the “American Independent” party, i.e., the left overs from the old Wallace movement. They’ve been a staple on ballots out here.

They and the Constitution Party (also Wallace-like) in the previous years worked together to not step on their toes, and to promote atavists.

I take it this year they have found their true hope in the Republican candidate.

Tens of thousands have left California’s American Independent Party in the last month

A new analysis finds nearly 32,000 voters in California’s American Independent Party changed their official registration and left the party in the two weeks after a Los Angeles Times investigation identified widespread confusion among the party’s members.

The change comes after a series of stories last month about voters who had intended to be politically independent, what’s known in California as having “no party preference.” A poll conducted for The Times found 73% of American Independent Party members did not know they had registered with an actual political party.

re: #24 CuriousLurker

OK, you asked for pedantry ;)

I think the analogy falls apart at the assumption that there can be one simple “recipe” on the religious plane. I.e. a clear set of instructions that is not liable to be interpreted differently. 2 teaspoons of sugar are 2 teaspoons of sugar (ok, it could be brown sugar or whatever), if someone adds 4, or cyanide, they are not following the recipe. The wiggle room of interpretation is vvv small.

Once we are on the religious plane, all bets are off. Do we interpret the text of the scripture ourselves (as the Protestants and Quranists do)? Or through the lens of interpreters/commentators (the Church Fathers, the Rabbis, etc.)? This is only the first hurdle, but it already opens a window of many possibilities, especially with the second path.

Even the simplest things will be interpreted differently. “Love your neighbor”, what could be clearer? But who is my neighbor? Is someone not from my religious group my neighbor (some of the actual historical and very authoritative answers to this are negative)? And does “love” include “tough love”? “Love your enemies”. Seems simple. But if you’re to follow certain interpretations, it “actually” means “love your enemies, hate Christ’s enemies and beat the Fatherland’s enemies” (an actual quote). Hence already from this example we have very different views of Christianity. Who is to say which is the deviant one? Who is to say what the original recipe is?

Each time when one wants to apply some label to the group that one wants to distance oneself from, I think it is useful to test the principle against the groups one considers legitimate.

For example, the Tanakh seems to be clear in its condemnation of homosexuality. Are religious Jews and Christians who accept homosexuality and SSM, many even basing this on some religious re-interpretations of the offending passages in the Bible and the Talmud, the Church Fathers and the rabbis, “deviant” or “extreme”? They’re certainly not in accord with the historically authoritative interpretations. Does the novelty make them less legitimate? Many would answer “yes” to this (ask an average Russian Orthodox). IMHO the only objective thing we can say is that such views are not traditional. We cannot objectively, without using a sectarian reference frame, call them more or less “legitimate”, “correct” or “deviant”.

Kasich would’ve been a formidable opponent. He was the only one who kept consistently beating her in the polls during the primaries.

Rubio and his empty suit could’ve been an interesting campaign for no other reason than it would’ve been a generational election, and no matter who won, the outcome would’ve been historic.

Too bad for the GOP that their voter base signed on for Trump. Good for the country, since I can’t stand any of the candidates, but bad for the Republicans.

Hillbilly Elegy: A Memoir of a Family and Culture in Crisis

From a former marine and Yale Law School graduate, a powerful account of growing up in a poor Rust Belt town that offers a broader, probing look at the struggles of America’s white working class

Hillbilly Elegy is a passionate and personal analysis of a culture in crisis—that of white working-class Americans. The decline of this group, a demographic of our country that has been slowly disintegrating over forty years, has been reported on with growing frequency and alarm, but has never before been written about as searingly from the inside. J. D. Vance tells the true story of what a social, regional, and class decline feels like when you were born with it hung around your neck. […]

Yeah I hate to say it but I think Ted Cruz might have been able to pull it out had he been the nominee.

Heck, in a traditional American system Jeb would have been the Golden Boy this year.

I think Cruz would have lost but it’d be much closer. Bush vs Clinton would likely have resulted in one of the lowest turnout elections in history

re: #73 Lidane

Kasich would’ve been a formidable opponent. He was the only one who kept consistently beating her in the polls during the primaries.

Rubio and his empty suit could’ve been an interesting campaign for no other reason than it would’ve been a generational election, and no matter who won, the outcome would’ve been historic.

Too bad for the GOP that their voter base signed on for Trump. Good for the country, since I can’t stand any of the candidates, but bad for the Republicans.

Kasich and Rubio would have been formidable. Kaisch has the resume. Rubio might have been able to stop the bleeding for Republicans among Latino voters. Either way, Clinton would be close to 270 than to 340 electoral votes

The New Yorker endorsement of Clinton touches briefly on that “white working class” meme but I don’t buy it.

First it sounds, to my jaded and cynical old ears, to be tinged with a bit of racism. By that I mean the emphasis is too much on categorizing people by skin color.

Secondly, there are many, many “working class” people not on Drumpfskind’s bandwagon and who will vote for Clinton.

re: #17 Ziggy_TARDIS

I also like how they are ignoring the polls in Alaska as well.

Here’s an Alaskan update: (And all opinions are my own!)

Alaska is going to very interesting. The citizens are pissed at the Republican controlled, do nothing Legislature which passed a $4 BILLION deficit budget. This required the “Now Independent but former Republican” Governor Walker to take 1/3 of the Budget Reserve Fund ($3 Billion) and cut the Permanent Fund In half (Total $700 Million) to make up the deficit. From talking with voters and reading the letters to the editors in various newspapers I expect a total over-haul in the Legislature with the Republicans losing their total control. The voters are pi$$ed!!!

Since 50% of the voters are undeclared or independent, I think Hillary has a pretty good shot at getting our 3 EV’s. Seems like no one has anything good to say about Trump. For the first time ever, the Alaska Federation of Natives (the largest Native organization) endorsed a Presidential candidate - Hillary Clinton.

The Senate race is going to be the interesting story. It’s a 4 way race with Sen. Murkowski (R), an Independent (Margaret Stock), a Democrat (Ray Metcalf), and the infamous Joe Miller running as a Libertarian. So we have a 4 way split of the votes. Joe Miller is still loved by the Tea Partiers so he will draw their votes. Metcalf, the Dem, hasn’t gotten very much support from the party so I think he’s out.

The interesting candidate is Margaret Stock. She’s a retired military officer (Lt Col) and a lawyer who has championed a lot of woman’s issues during her military career. She’s starting to get some attention so she may have a chance. Sen Murkowski is her usual self…one either loves her or hates her. She got into trouble with her reversing her position on Judge Garland. First she was in favor of a vote then several days later she switched to the Republican Party line of no hearings or voting. I would consider her to be vulnerable and not a sure favorite. Stock might have a chance.

As far as Rep Don Young (R) goes, he’s seeking his 43rd year (22nd term) in the House. Despite his seniority, he chairs only one sub-committee in the House. He got into big time troubles years ago and to save his hide he agreed not to seek any other leadership positions. He’s definitely getting too old for the position as two years age he wound up voting against a bill he sponsored. His Democrat opponent, Steve Lindbeck, is a well qualified candidate to oppose Young. Lindbeck is the former head of Alaska Public radio and is fairly well-known throughout the State. A lot of voters want Don Young to retire so I think Lindbeck might pull off an upset.

re: #77 CuriousLurker

Same thing from another angle: it would be possible to establish some legitimacy rules if we haven’t had any religions before this moment and we were only now starting something. Then one could say: these are the rules, those that do not follow are deviants.

Since we do, at present, have numerous religious movements in all their complexity, there are certain “brute facts” that need to be taken into account in any such attempt, which IMHO will lead any such attempt to failure.

For example, both Catholics and Protestants are usually considered to be Christians. Certainly from a non-sectarian standpoint (some Catholics and Protestants may object). OK, so that’s a brute fact. And because of this brute fact we cannot say that some religious movement is less legitimate than the other merely because one of them is older, since then we would have to consider Protestants less Christian, and we don’t. Newt Gingrich is not a more legitimate Christian than Barack Obama merely on the basis of Catholicism being “more traditional”, and Protestantism being a result of a split. This is just one example, and there are numerous others.

So basically we are forced to define things “backwards” - we have a set of religious movements which we do consider to belong to certain religions - doesn’t matter why, it has developed so historically. If we now want to exclude some new group, we have to test whether the exclusion criteria also work against any of the traditional groups - or we risk creating a contradiction.

BTW, one for you too. I put the following book on my Kindle wishlist earlier this week, in part because of hearing you talk about where you live. I just went back to look up the exact title and the price from $14.99 to $4.99. Gah! Amazon is evil—they know exactly how to entice me to buy stuff.

I just started reading that (from the public library, so I have to read it before it’s due). Looks like it’ll be a fairly quick read. I may have something to say about it when it’s finished.

(I had about 400 books on my Kindle the last time I checked. Which, considering that I bought it only so I wouldn’t have to drag books with me when I travelled, is quite a few. I set a limit of $1.99 for kindle books a while back, and only have only broken it once — special case.)

Old political rule: You only want more debates when you’re losing. It’s always the side that’s losing that suggests a series of debates or an extra debate.

It also fits with Trump’s style. He’s all about rallies and media exposure. The hard work of voter outreach and gotv work doesn’t interest him (or apparently his staff)

I’m not very sure about polling up here. I think Stock is kinda’ hiding out and could ambush Murkowski on election day. Remember, 6 years ago Murkowski lost the Republican primary and had to run as an Independent write-in candidate against Joe Miller, the Republican candidate. Once elected, she immediately switched back to being a Republican. A lot of voters wish she had remained an Independent in the Senate. Stock is definitely an under-dog but she could pull off an upset.

Still hard to tell. Murkowski is Chair of the Senate Natural Resources Committee and that is a power-full position for Alaska. Time will tell.

BTW, to be very clear, this is a non-sectarian approach. Obviously when one does employ the sectarian frame of reference (I hope “sectarian” does not sound pejorative in this context, I’m using it neutrally), then one can clearly differentiate between the bad groups and the good groups, the legitimate ones and the illegitimate ones. But such differentiation stops “at the border”, so to say. I’ve read that many Sunnis consider Shia not to be (fully) legitimate Muslims. Since I’m not a Muslim, I can’t tell them what to think. We simply do not share the core assumptions. I can only tell them that this is a subjective vision that has no place in objective academic scholarship, in the news, etc. - but they’re welcome to hold such views if they wish.

105
freetoken  Oct 23, 2016 • 3:47:55pm

The rural-urban division in our society is pretty strong these days. I think the information revolution has accentuated that, with rural communities being more isolated and news and entertainment from large urban areas dominating online presence. Those people who live in the country may not even be connected via cable.

I don’t know how much of a problem this can create for our country. Because of our Constitution, very rural states like North Dakota can control national policy if their Senators want to sit on a treaty or nomination. Note that Iowa Senator Grassley has sat on the USSC nomination and that alone can’t cost him his seat this year.

Because of how our system of government has been structured, changing to a more democratic form of representation is unlikely. If our population continues to grow the way it has, many states may end up with only 1 or 2 Representatives while the most populated 15 states end up with the majority of the House. But even that won’t change the Senate.

Short of a crisis like the Civil War this won’t change. I do not foresee a change in US governance in my lifetime. It may take centuries to change. We are already the oldest continual Republic on the planet and the force of our forefathers will press us forward on the same path for several generations.

Climate change is a chronic, not acute, problem. Perhaps late in the 22nd century, when Miami and New Orleans and New York and Norfolk and Houston are abandoned and our civilization really does change… then all bets are off.

Till then we will muddle through. Drumpfskind will lose, his movement, really George Wallace’s movement + the disaffection of the rural populace, will simmer along but always step on itself with its own stupidity and viciousness.

So to the New Yorker and the rest now fretting about the “white working-class” I say this: if by now you haven’t convinced them that they have been participating in socialism (lite) during their entire lives, you’re not going to now. They will simply die off.

Same genus, perhaps, but a different species. Preppers can be fairly non-RWNJ, and even LW. The farm generation that went through the Depression, and refugees from WWII often had compulsive prepper habits. Most of the quirks of the Senate are the results of Senate rules. There’s nothing in the constitution about filibusters, cloture, or holds. Those rules can be changed but for a variety of reasons, the leadership in both major parties see value in having them so they remain.

I fully suspect that the Democrats will seek to reduce the number of votes for cloture to however many votes they have in January. The Republicans will scream and yell, but when they eventually get the majority back they’ll see the benefit in keeping the number lower.

I’m not sure either party will find it their best interests to change Senate rules.

But even if they are changed, an influential Senator can still sit on a bill/nominee if they are the head of the right committee. I suppose the Senate could even choose to eliminate that and just introduce/debate everything in the full Senate, but I really doubt that will happen.

Here’s a piece Vance wrote for The Atlantic in July:

Opioid of the Masses
To many, Donald Trump feels good, but he can’t fix America’s growing social and cultural crisis, and the eventual comedown will be harsh.

What Trump offers is an easy escape from the pain. To every complex problem, he promises a simple solution. He can bring jobs back simply by punishing offshoring companies into submission. As he told a New Hampshire crowd—folks all too familiar with the opioid scourge—he can cure the addiction epidemic by building a Mexican wall and keeping the cartels out. He will spare the United States from humiliation and military defeat with indiscriminate bombing. It doesn’t matter that no credible military leader has endorsed his plan. He never offers details for how these plans will work, because he can’t. Trump’s promises are the needle in America’s collective vein.

I believe the Democrats talked about lowering the number of votes for cloture, and I could absolutely see them doing that with a Clinton win and less than 60 seats in their caucus. As for committee chairs sitting on legislation, there are ways around that but they are rarely invoked. Also, keep in mind, over the last six years, we’ve seen one side taking full advantage of the letter of the rules while abusing the spirit of the rules, which is likely a contributing factor to the Democrats gaining seats in the senate this year

re: #127 CuriousLurker

Be careful out there. Earlier this week I was reading about that father & son in Florida who died in that Eagle’s Nest sinkhole. I even looked up an “atlas” of the caves under it and was thinking, “WTF—were they nuts??” You don’t strike me as the kind of guy who’d take unnecessary risks, but still. *shudder*

I was talking to a diver today that was familiar with that particular cave system. It’s considered in the Mt. Everest category for cave divers, he doubts he would ever try it. It’s very deep, silty, narrow and complex. He had some good info on the two divers who died, number of theories as to why, based on the fact that one of them had their equipment (rebreather, scrubs out the CO2 from your exhaled breath and add O2 to keep it at a normal level. Very complex piece of equipment, but allows very very long deep extended dives). off, it’s suspected that they were trying to pass though a narrow restraint and something went wrong. That or one of them got stuck and the only way the other could get him out was to pull his gear off. In any case, a horrible thing. Both divers were VERY experienced, and were diving some very advanced gear, rebreathers with Trimix (a special mix of Oxygen, Helium and Nitrogen, designed to eliminate narcosis and oxygen toxicity at great depths)

I’d like to do the first 2 of the 3 levels of cave training, in part to really refine my own skills. I’d stick to caves that are in the “easy” category however.

As for the Father / Son, the son (at least) wasn’t scuba certified at all, neither were cave certified and they died from, quite frankly, being stupid.

Center-right opposition claims victory in Lithuania vote, to start coalition talks

Lithuania’s center-right opposition Peasants and Greens party declared victory after a second round of voting in a general election on Sunday and said it would start negotiations with the Homeland Union and Social Democrats over forming a coalition government.

The Peasants and Greens won 54 seats in the 141-member parliament, making it the biggest party, results published by the Lithuanian election commission showed.

Yep!

I will credit Nate Silver, that even though I think he is wrong for including every poll, no matter how disreputable the source, he doesn’t try to massage the numbers and he does follow his ideas to the letter. Through how he interprets things can be incredibly wrong-headed at times.

He doesn’t try to out right massage the data.

Silver has banned five pollsters for making up data. he sees value in making use of polls with varying methodologies. Even if Rasmussen is wrong, its possible that including Rasmussen in the aggregate, appropriately weighted, will make the aggregate more accurate, if that makes sense. Its like looking at the same picture from two different angles; you could pick up something from one angle you missed from another.

Worked shoot was huge in Japan for a while, and i guess it counts as super strong style, not too much of it in the UK. Some good old fashioned ECW type stuff, carnival family friendly stuff and some strong style are what’s dominating at the minute.

I don’t do reality TV, got tired of the Legitimate Theatre(tm, i don’t go to gigs much any more as the crowds just film stuff on phones and talk to each other rather than watch the show. I find wrestling crowds much better places to be - fans are there to watch the damn show and are generally decent friendly folk. The UK scene has a huge crossover with Rock & Metal music, so lots of black tshirts, dark clothes and long manky hair among the men. Lots of female fans too (who are there of their own accord), it’s a helluva scene at the minute.
It will ocmbust eventually, but at the moment it’s grand

I notice the Youtube-popular WhatCulture outfit have gone into offering these too.

Worked-shoot kind of died in Japan but there are still fights arranged. Rizin I guess is the latest to emerge from the end of Pride Fighting. Japanese pro-wrestling is also waning though it still gets some press.

Here in the US I always wondered why work-shoot as well as kick-boxing and legitimate jiu jitsu competitions never really took off. I know MMA today incorporates a lot of jiu jitsu, but to me so many MMA fights are really just bad boxing.

And speaking of boxing, it is nothing like it was 20, and especially 40 and 60 years ago. I think the boxing promoters really messed up the whole sport, if indeed we want to call it a sport.

Here’s What the Latest Polls Suggest in the 9 States Voting on Marijuana

California
The crown jewel for the marijuana industry is California, which is on its own the eighth-largest economy in the world by GDP. If marijuana is legalized for recreational use, California could be looking at an additional $1 billion in annual tax revenue, and the marijuana industry would have a new pathway to rapid growth. Ironically, though, some of the biggest opposition within the state has come from cannabis growers.

Thus far, things are swaying toward approval for Prop 64. A late September poll from KPIX 5/Survey USA found that 52% of respondents favored Prop 64, compared to 41% who opposed the measure. A similar poll released on Sept. 12 from USC Dornsife/Los Angeles Times found 58% support for the measure.

While I am all for decriminalizing cannabis, as a stringent no-smoker I’m rather dismayed by this. Tobacco itself is probably the worst thing the New World gave the Old World. The recent trend of “vaping” I find obnoxious when I am out and about and find myself in the odorous trains of a vaper. Cannabis will be just as bad.

Call me a prude if you want, but why do people do this to their lungs?

I heard someone recently suggest that what we need to do is legalize marijuana and then make actually smoking it socially unacceptable as was done with tobacco. Sounds fairly reasonable to me.

Most people aren’t going going to smoke weed in public. Couple of reasons: first most laws are treating it more like alcohol than tobacco in that’s you can’t just light up while walking down the street, you’ve got to be at home or at a smoking club type place. Second, most people who will be smoking pot when legal either already smoke it or used to, and typically that smoking happens in private. Third, even if it was treated like tobacco most places have gone nonsmoking (either by choice or by force of law), so you’re not going to be able to spark up wherever anyway

Might not work, but making it seem less ‘hip’ might reduce the number of young people lighting up.

That type of wrestling is very specialized offerings - I think most Americans aren’t even aware there is stuff outside of WWE. When I was growing up the local professional wrestling was back in the black and white TV days, with Saturday noon TV shows from the local NWA promotion. What you’re into with PWG and LU is definitely connoisseur wrestling, if I may put those two words together in a sentence.

I had a stretch where I’d watch anything I could, including AWA on late night ESPN2 or Lucha libre on the high numbered channels here in Southern California.

More recently it was just WWE with the occasional TNA or ROH show. But I’ve been really impressed by LU. As for PWG, I’d just like to check it out to up my hipster wrestling fan credentials

I have a neighbor who would appear to agree with you. This was sent in an email to our neighborhood association the other day (middle-class Denver suburb):

Colorado problems!

For the record, I’m a non-smoker with asthma who dislikes the scent of marijuana almost as much as I despise tobacco smoke, and I’m not thrilled with vaping. But I really hope the marijuana measures pass in more states — it’s a lot better as a legal substance with social disapproval of rude public smoking.

Here’s to oils and edibles and a thriving hemp industry.

Oh yes, John Hennigan. Amazing physique, and that is probably what led him to being cast as Hercules in a movie by the same name.

A couple of years ago there were a couple of “Hercules” movies released, a decent one and a bad one. Both starred wrestlers as Hercules. Dwayne Johnson played the character in the ok movie. Hennigan was the Hercules in the bad one. I watched as much of it as I could, but his acting was so bad it made me cringe.

WWE has adapted fairly well recently. AJ Styles holds their world title and Kevin Owens (formerly Steen) holds the new universal title (they split the roster between their two shows). Dean Ambrose (formerly Johnny Moxley on the indie scene) is feuding with Styles and Seth Rollins (formerly Tyler Black on the indies) is feuding with Owens/Steen. El Generico is also on the roster as Sami Zayn. And Finn Balor (Prince Devitt) actually beat Rollins for the newly established universal title before having to give it up due to injury. They seemed to learn something from CM Punk and Daniel Bryan (Bryan Danielson) over the last couple of years.

I just have to say how much I enjoy having Linux on my Laptop now. It runs so much faster and while I’ve occassionally had to Google how to do something, I’m loving it.

My biggest fear turned out to be a non-issue. I LOVE Adobe Lightroom for RAW editing, but guess what, there is a free Linux equilivant app. Haven’t done a “feature for feature” comparison, but so far I’m very impressed with it and didn’t have any issues with any of my images

The fact that I’m running Zorin, which is a distro tailored for windows users probably contributed to my comfort level.

And remember, this is coming from someone who spent 15 years teaching Microsoft Technologies and has no freaking idea how many various certs.

Hell, I may just learn some Python and get back into programming a bit for fun.

I have really only played 5 of the main ones, 7, 8, 10, 12, and 13. I could not finish 12, as the leveling up system was needlessly complicated, and the characters did little to inspire any sort of interest.

The Problem with 7 is the fact that the materia cost oodles. I will admit, the constant hate-bashing of 7 by the purists of those before FF 7 have turned me off of Final Fantasies 1-6, especially in the case of 6, where Kefka just seems like a Joker-ripoff with Magic, and I am quite sure DC has written a comic about the Joker with magic.

As for FF7 (2nd best; Squall Leonhart forever), I don’t recall having issues switching on PC. I do recall that when I played it back in 1998 on my brand new PC, I had a driver issue with it I could never figure out, so all of my cutscenes played upside down.

*Just* the cutscenes. So for those of you who’ve played it, you may realize that quite a few of the cutscenes play as background over which you can still move your characters. The characters weren’t upside down, just the background. I actually turned my CRT monitor on it’s side and laid on the desk to watch the ending and “the scene”. Good dang times.

re: #278 Bass Reeves

I know hold Final Fantasy VII and VIII in equal esteem.

FFVIII is the more polished of the two, with far more complete world-building than VII. Even after all the side-games, there is still a lot of world-building that simply isn’t there in FFVII. It also has a simpler and easier to understand love story than FFVII, provided you make the right choices.

However, FF7 will touch your heart. It’s a game that pulls at the heartsrings, and its gameplay is just a little bit better than VIII’s. There are more emotional moments in VII than VIII. They are equally good, just with different strengths.

In regards to Villians, I would be hard pressed to choose, though I think I would lean towards Sephiroth. On one hand, FFVII has Sephiroth, a villain that, while batshit insane, was cool, calculating and independent, and willing to handle things himself. His backstory from Crisis Core makes him more interesting. On the other hand, the inference you can get from Ultimecia from her speaking is that this is a woman who was persecuted into snapping at everything, and wanting to become a Goddess in order to stop it. Ultimecia is compelling in her own way. Again though, slight lean to Sephiroth.

Ultimecia’s castle was amazing. Northern Crater was ok, through one of the weaknesses of VII is shown there, as there is a completely unexplained abandoned settlement on the way towards the pit where you go towards Jenova.

The Tesseracts of 13 were pretty good too, at least in concept. 10 had the worst Final Dungeon of the bunch by a country mile.
