WATCH LIVE: Trump’s Press Secretary Makes Some Kind of Weird Statement

The word is that no questions will be allowed.

UPDATE at 1/21/17 3:28:07 pm by Charles Johnson

Sean Spicer was more than an hour and a half late; his statement begins at 1:33:20 into this video, and it’s really stunning. He just rages at the press, and lies blatantly about the crowd size at Trump’s inauguration, claiming it was “the largest audience to ever witness an inauguration… PERIOD!”

No, it wasn’t.

A lot of my Facebook friends have been posting wingnut memes about “If you’re American, he’s your President whether you voted for him or not.” While I happen to agree - however disgustedly - with that assessment, where was that sentiment eight years ago when those same wingnuts were flipping their shit at Obama?

32
The Ghost of Senator Incitatus  Jan 21, 2017 • 2:50:19pm

Not funny.

This the executive branch using its clout to perpetuate an image of the free press being unreliable and “biased.”

I honestly thought that it might die down after the swearing in, because *somebody* on the admin team would see how dangerous this is…but we’re going there. The head of the government is aligning with the paranoid and hard-right position that anything that contradicts their worldview is a kind of hostility.

It wasn’t there. These people are like light switches. When their guy is in power, no criticism is allowed but if they’re out of power, it’s perfectly legit to liken hte President to Hitler.

It goes the other way, however. Trump does not consider people like us as part of his America. He is their President. He wants nothing to do with us.

Thing is the press is in a bind that’s almost Skinnerian: each time there’s a press event, it *might* be something actually, important, it might not be. It’s like intermittent reinforcement—the uncertainty of whether you get a reward actually further encourages the behavior.

The press are also in a different bind: the question of whether to try and serve their purpose as reporters (in keeping with the spirit of Tacitus’s Agricola—trying to do the best job you can in a system that’s unjust), or to step away. Except the latter option isn’t that great, since there’s already a press contingent that’s willing to act as propagandists, since they’re already set up to disinform.

Yep. I actually haven’t got involved as much as I would like to in the past because of social anxiety. I hate making phone calls to strangers. I got so nervous when I did that when I worked on a state senator’s campaign five years back but my current job has me making lots of phone calls so I’m not so nervous about that anymore. I’m also a lot more comfortably socially then I was too.

Thing is, it’s like a child emperor: they are a snotty kid, but they’re a snotty kid with immense power to actualize their tantrums. And there will be a savvy adult somewhere in the court who groks the power attainable by playing along with the child emperor’s whims. Basically, half of English history is like that. (Man I’ve been reading too much English history)

And in the current state of play of US politics, this isn’t an isolated incident. This is the GWB era’s dismissal of the “reality-based community” except bigger and dumber…but that it’s big and dumb doesn’t mean it won’t have the intended effect. It also, really, really matters that this is the White House pulling a Gateway-Pundit-level denial of reality. Optics matter when you’re the kahuna of the most powerful nation in the world. People overseas are watching this The Commissar Vanishes shit and getting goosebumps. Inside the country, this is another message that there will be no opening of the Trump administration to other perspectives (eerily literal, given how specific photos are being used to argue the count, dismissing all other images that suggest another count).

I can make an argument that this is Trump’s governing style—the chaos is intentional, the conveyance to the audience that he’s unpredictable, thus must be watched closely and appeased—but even if it’s 100% intentional, no actual ego involved, its a dic(k)tator move…cowing people by denying them reality.

Sorry, but I don’t ever remember seeing anything like this before, even when Dubya and his goons were in office. This is just nuts.

Trump is clearly unhinged. Isn’t there some means of removing an incapacitated President from office?

Dubya - for all his faults - wasn’t completely stupid. He never would have marched Ari out there and given him a completely dumbshit statement to parrot in front of the press. If he had something idiotic to say, he took it upon himself to say it.

A lot of my Facebook friends have been posting wingnut memes about “If you’re American, he’s your President whether you voted for him or not.” While I happen to agree - however disgustedly - with that assessment, where was that sentiment eight years ago when those same wingnuts were flipping their shit at Obama?

My question is…how can people say that with a straight face when they treat a good 60% of the people in the country as not actually American. Like, literally don’t treat them as they are real citizens with real rights?

You jest, but what just happened is a compliance technique.

You force someone to concede something that’s perceptibly false. If you can crack that, it suggests that they’re pliable…that you’ve exerted your will over them.

While it’s notably depicted in an episode of Star Trek: TNG that’s simply an interrogation (the bit with “there are four lights”), it’s generally not done for the purpose of making someone tell the truth. It’s done to make people say what you want them to. Cults do versions of this—for example, having people confess to things they didn’t do, or pushing them to embellish stories.

Relevant sections to remove a president unable to perform his duties (sections one and two deal with VP succession and replacing a VP):

Section 3. Whenever the President transmits to the President pro tempore of the Senate and the Speaker of the House of Representatives his written declaration that he is unable to discharge the powers and duties of his office, and until he transmits to them a written declaration to the contrary, such powers and duties shall be discharged by the Vice President as Acting President.

Section 4. Whenever the Vice President and a majority of either the principal officers of the executive departments or of such other body as Congress may by law provide, transmit to the President pro tempore of the Senate and the Speaker of the House of Representatives their written declaration that the President is unable to discharge the powers and duties of his office, the Vice President shall immediately assume the powers and duties of the office as Acting President.

Thereafter, when the President transmits to the President pro tempore of the Senate and the Speaker of the House of Representatives his written declaration that no inability exists, he shall resume the powers and duties of his office unless the Vice President and a majority of either the principal officers of the executive department or of such other body as Congress may by law provide, transmit within four days to the President pro tempore of the Senate and the Speaker of the House of Representatives their written declaration that the President is unable to discharge the powers and duties of his office. Thereupon Congress shall decide the issue, assembling within forty-eight hours for that purpose if not in session. If the Congress, within twenty-one days after receipt of the latter written declaration, or, if Congress is not in session, within twenty-one days after Congress is required to assemble, determines by two-thirds vote of both Houses that the President is unable to discharge the powers and duties of his office, the Vice President shall continue to discharge the same as Acting President; otherwise, the President shall resume the powers and duties of his office.

The key in that XXV Amendment slug up there is that either the President has to declare himself unfit (this has been done a few times, notably when President Reagan was shot and underwent surgery, and when President Bush underwent a colonoscopy). You might remember Alexander Haig’s famous “I am in charge” that got shot down nearly immediatly.

As for the majority of the cabinet doing it, good luck with that. While the GOP might prefer Mike Pence, I’m betting the cabinet doesn’t. As far as I know, there is no other provision for removal other than impeachment.

If it were to come to impeachment, the Dems should insist the GOP initiate it, after all they are in the majority in both houses.

On my drive back from Riverside today I heard a “This American Life” broadcast that was talking to the civil servants in the DOE.

One woman was leaving, one staying. They talked about how maybe 1 person in the whole agency might doubt man made climate change. Mention of Rick Perry brought a chuckle. They were also wondering who the 2nd in command after dancing Ricky would be, as that person would have way more interaction with them.

Also how they can slow & delay work if they don’t agree with it by submitting to legal to review, etc.etc.

Interesting.

Major news outlets are not covering the marches at all in this state.

If Sean Spicer’s “news conference” means anything, y’all in more liberal states are going to get exactly the same propaganda we have for years.

Yes. Jim Crow still existed in that day, and neither party was interested in equality. The Republicans of the day were just as happy about the interment as Democrats were.

Though the Census Bureau denied it for decades, they in fact released all the personal information they had about Japanese-Americans to local authorities, who rounded up Japanese—Americans, regardless of which party the officials belonged to.

Yup. I can’t shoot more than one at a time, so I only need one.

The store owner here in town has dozens (he likes to collect them, he is not a wingnut). He can only shoot one at a time as well.

The gun shop owner has hundreds. He can only shoot one at a time too.

Heh. On that topic, Mrs. Fish and I were discussing children earlier this evening - specifically, the likelihood (or lack thereof) of attempting to add a third fishspawn. She stated that, in addition to our other sound logical reasons for not doing so, there’s an additional wrinkle. If she had her IUD removed in order to pursue a fishspawn, we would have to pay through the nose to have another one installed, thanks to the changes coming to health care coverage.

Austin Police Department was expecting 11 - 20 thousand. Parade organizers had 30,000 small Texas shaped tags with “Women’s March on Austin” on them- kinda like those “I voted” tags. Look at people like Bill Kristol or David Brooks.

The minute Trump fucks up big enough he can’t recover, the GOP will just pretend he was never their guy in any way. Nuh-uh, not ever.

I mean, they’ve done this before (with George W Bush), and are doing it right now with everything they did after 2008.

Top headline in my regional newspaper at the moment: Trump Praises CIA, Bristles over Inaugural Crowd Counts.

LANGLEY, Va. (AP) — On his first full day in office, President Donald Trump on Saturday berated the media over its coverage of his inauguration, and turned a bridge-building first visit to CIA headquarters into an airing of grievances about “dishonest” journalists. But it was Trump who spread inaccuracies about the size of the crowds at his swearing in.

Standing in front of a memorial for fallen CIA agents, Trump assured intelligence officials, “I am so behind you.” He made no mention of his repeated criticism of the intelligence agencies following the election, including his public challenges of their high-confidence assessment that Russia meddled in the White House race to help him win.

That is the post of my neighbor, a married woman, very gentle soul on her Facebook page. She’s in her later 60’s. Small in stature, big in heart. She went to a woman’s march today in the town just down the road from me. That was what she got. I don’t know the details, how many were there, and how many cretins. All I know is my smoldering fire is not going out easily. I stepped away from here for a bit, because I was going too far in the deep end. My wife marched last night at the Harrisburg Pa Capitol Steps. No incidents. I’m disgusted at the Ratfuckery. I’ve unfriended and unfollowed and struggled to not detonate my band over politics. I’ve seen enough in my years, and this is not going to end well. I just wish I was 21 again and that strong and quick. Time to start carrying a cane.

I was wondering what the magnetometers statement from the USSS was about:

So he’s suggesting that 100,000 people showed up with guns?

Another quote from another FB wingnut who’s spent the past month telling people to stop whining and get over it:

I’m so done battling over politics. Everybody has the right to their own opinion and we need to respect that. I refuse to let politics divide me from people I love. This is what happens to third world countries and I will no longer be part of it. Good luck to all and I hope people start feeling the same way. Let’s stay united. Much love to everyone.

They’re giving up. Heading for the exits.

Another few months and these people will be denying ever voting for their god emperor.

I’ve studied a fait bit of WWII history and I’d never heard that term before. I did a bit of looking about that, and the only reference I could find is that apparently one of the Nazis in Schindler’s List used that term.

Granted my Google-fu is not the best but I’m still inclined to doubt the claim in those tweets.

Can we just start calling Spicer Dobby the House Elf?

Pitiful excuse for a human being.

No! Dobby was horribly mistreated but turned his life around. Also, our Jack Russell/Beagle mix is called Dobby because of the way her ears sometimes look, and I won’t hear a word against either of them.

re: #247 Charles Johnson

Did President Obama ever brag about the size of his inauguration crowds? I don’t recall him ever doing so - does anyone?

We’ve never had a President who’s this insecure. He might have BPD in addition to the NPD.
