After 28 years, Camp of Champions will declare bankruptcy and return payment to campers who have already booked their week for summer 2017 due to insufficient snow levels and a rapid decline of the Horstman Glacier. According to Ken, “in 2015 alone the glacier lost 35 vertical feet of ice,” and despite snowmaking capabilities that were recently installed to help curb the melting, the damage was irreversible.
Ken made his decision so he would not break his promise to provide a world class terrain park to the campers of Camp of Champions, something that has been harder to do over the past several seasons due to a combination of warmer temperatures and lower snowfall totals.

The following is Based on a True Story
Scene opens
James Comey —buttoned down, straight laced and seasoned director of the FBI stands on a helipad, the director of the DEA is standing in the helicopters open door motioning him to come aboard. The bright sun reflects off of his large aviator sunglasses.—
DEA- Lets go Jim.
James Comey is standing stiff as a board and is intently looking at his secure iPhone in his outstretched hand.
JC- Hang on the president is calling me.
DEA- The president?! Jesus Christ Jimmy, you’d better answer it.
James answers the phone.
JC- Mr. President?!
The president of the United States of America, Donald J Trump, is laying naked in a large bathtub that was originally installed for William Howard Taft. The bathtub is almost too small for his large, elephantine frame. His grayish orange hair is laying, clumped and soaking wet on the bathroom floor.
POTUS- Jimmy boy, do you know where I am calling you from right now!?
JC- *Jim covers the phones microphone and says to the DEA Director “Jesus Christ he’s in the fucking bubble bath again.”*
No Mr. President, where are you calling me from?
POTUS- I’m calling from William Howard Tafts bathtub. He was the president just like I am the president.
JC- Yes sir. What can I help you with today?
POTUS- I’ve just been thinking Jim, there’s no way I paid hookers to pee on a bed in Moscow just because the Obamas had previously slept there. I was very careful and knew I was being monitored while I was in Russia Jimbo. Ya know!?
JC- Ok sir.
POTUS- I look forward to working with you Jim.
The president hangs up the phone.
James Comey stands on the helipad stoically seemingly lost in deep, contemplative thought. He is considering the implications to his career and making mental notes of what had just transpired.
DEA- what did he want!?!?
JC- You wouldn’t believe me if I told you.
He climbs into the helicopter and it flies away into the sunset.
End Scene

To me, an outsider, it looks like Labor is winning more from the SNP than defeating the Tories, who are now down just one seat.
This is clearly a close election and May could still end up with a very very narrow escape.
Regardless, UK elections have an air about them that escapes us here in the US. We are in many ways far less democratic, even though we are supposed to be a republic, versus the UK monarchy (yes, I know, a constitutional monarchy, but still…)

A few years ago, Nebraska went for mail voting (just before I moved here) to save money.
Basically, the idea of dragging polling stations out to so many rural villages like the one I live in, and unincorporated places such as Lisco (down the road sixteen miles from me in Garden County) was too expensive.
Cities such as Omaha, Lincoln, and South Sioux City have regular polling stations, as do smaller cities like Scottsbluff.
The mail vote works both ways here: Voter turnout is much higher than in the past (due to the ease of voting in rural areas), but overwhelms the cities (because they have polling stations). As such, mail voting favours conservatives here.

How’s this for a fine introduction?
Donald Trump, a YouTube comment section who became a real boy and was recently elected President of the United States, is an avid Twitter user. Trump, who is dumb, likes to share his various dumb thoughts with the world via often ill-advised and dumb tweets. His staff, many of who are also dumb, are at least smart enough to know that Trump’s dumb tweets are often counterproductive and make the job of enabling the Republican Party to rob their own supporters blind all that much more difficult. Trump’s dumb tweets have become such a problem that it was recently rumored that a team of outside attorneys would vet Trump’s dumb tweets before he actually tweeted them.

I don’t think we’re going to disappear from world politics, we’re just too big and powerful. But, and it’s not entirely a bad thing, a lot more countries are going to ask themselves if following the US is in their best interests. We’re the third largest country in land area, the third largest country in population, still the largest economy, and the largest corn grower in the world. Of course we will still wield some major influence. But a question for a while will be “Can we count on your country to hold that position for the next four years?”

I don’t know whether straight-ticket voting is a good or bad thing. We don’t have it here - our elections are nominally non-partisan (except Federal positions).
Eliminating straight-ticket voting means you can’t tick the “D” box, but it also means you can’t tick the “R” box. I don’t know whether that would help Republicans in Texas or no (I’m guessing the Republicans think it will, which is why the bill was written). When I talked to my cousin in Slovenia yesterday, I asked him to be honest with me as a resident of a smaller nation about the perception of the US. He pretty much said that while we’re respected for our technology and being a place where people can succeed, we are seen as pushing our weight a lot and Trump is seen as a joke. He said that Iraq really left a bad impression with many.
If I had a cousin in Slovenia, I might be asking for asylum. (Actually, no, I am going to stand and fight for my home.) I did note a few days ago that when my wife and I were in Poland, a number of people in Gdansk asked why the hell we would return to the USA rather than stay in Poland, as they saw a civil war brewing from their point of view.

I suspect that is only if you spend a lot of time blocking wingnuts and don’t ever venture a political opinion. Even if you don’t venture political opinions, others will impose them on your Twitter feed.
Nope, funding a libertarian dudebro’s Freeze Peach arguments to provide a platform for Klansmen and Nazis is not the way I want to spend my time.

I have to admit that the congressional committees don’t interest me that much, even Comey’s testimony. What matters here isn’t whether Trump’s people had untoward contacts with the Russians, or that Trump tried to fuck with an investigation, or that Russia screwed with our elections. All those things are, or should be, obvious. But the real story is the old one in international crime, and I hope someone, maybe the special prosecutor, is investigating it. It can be summed up easily: Follow the Fucking Money.

Consider the amount of time our esteemed host Mr. Johnson spends dealing with wingnuts on his own Twitter feed, and the number of “automatic blocking function activated” posts people put here.
Jim Wright (Stonekettle) seems to spend at least a third of his time on Twitter hammering Twitter twits.
It seems that anyone who is a liberal (or simply cites a fact, like Neil deGrasse Tyson) spends a considerable amount of time playing Whack-a-Mole with wingnuts.
And we’re still left with the problem of libertarian dudebros at Twitter seeming to feel the need to allow racists, other bigots, misogynists, &c a platform on their site.
I see no need to go to Twitter except as an observer, and to find guinea pig pictures.

Posting a tweet from Jim Wright or Rebecca Shoenkopf or my wingnut congressman might make Twitter some money in some way (though I don’t know how).
Not having a Faceplant account or a Twitspace account so my stalker ex-wife can harass me might also be a reason, just spitballin’ here. Not wanting to give up diddly of my private information to corporations that I don’t have to, so I can be served up tailored news or adverts might also be a reason.
I’ll have to think on my stance on having a Twitter, Facebook, or Google+ account.

Adding insult to injury, Texas just ended straight ticket voting:
[Embedded content]
It has taken me years to understand the US voting system - especially the fact that so many positions are via a vote. In my parliamentary democracy we vote for politicians, local, state and federal. Each is elected at a different time. Voting usually takes about a minute (the only exception being the Senate which involves a slightly complicated voting system. We also have elections on a Saturday, with options for both early and postal voting.
There seem to be so many ways in which those in power in the US can make it difficult for people to vote. Until you get a standardized voting system, administered by a non-partisan commission, this will continue.

UK politics ought to be a lesson to self-styled progressives here in the US: politics is about building coalitions, not winning Twitter wars.
Progressives lost in this election. Progressives in Scotland and Ireland lost ground. Labor is picking up some seats in this election compared to the last one, but an incumbent party losing a few seats to the number two party is hardly a rousing affair.

That coalition was led by a prime minister who did not want to leave the EU at all — although he ended up being responsible for it to happen, but not by choice.
Nick Clegg is a committed European through and through. He even was a member of the European parliament many years ago. The LibDems would stay in the EU if they had the power to make that happen.

Bernie lost BIG with black voters through out the primaries. The Berniebots think that they can take every Clinton voter for granted, and just add some of Trump’s. It’s not that simple.
And again, as always, Bernie never had to face any serious oppo. Clinton held fire, mistakenly thinking Bernie’s supporters would note and appreciate this. You KNOW the GOP would not.
re: #205 Quoth the raven, Covfefe.
Inner tube, I assume you mean? That’s actually not too bad. The fun part is if you ever have to work on tubeless tires… Just Youtube for rednecks seating tires on rims and I’m sure you’ll find plenty of reasons to NOPE out of ever trying to repair tires on your car or tractor.
…yeah, my bike maintenance experience is zero. Zilch. Nothing. I have no idea what the hell I am doing.
Maybe not the best plan after a margarita.
re: #202 klys (maker of Silmarils)
I should see about fixing mr. klys’s bike.
Changing a tube can’t be that hard, right?
It’s all about getting the bead to make its way 100% around the rim, which is easier to do with tire wrenches. With my mountain bike I’ve gotten good enough to just use my hands to reattach the tire to the wheel, I still use tire wrenches to remove the tire.
And when you put a new tube in, check the tire for any shit that might be hiding out on the inside of the tire before you put the tire back on.

Blowing a tubeless tire onto the rim with accelerant is a spectacular, but dangerous, trick. Mythbusters also proved it was effective, although it needs to be followed up with properly filling the tire, because the heat will quickly fade and result in a seriously deflated tire.

Nope. But you need tire levers, and a floor pump with gauge.
re: #203 DanielKi
That coalition was led by a prime minister who did not want to leave the EU at all — although he ended up being responsible for it to happen, but not by choice.
Nick Clegg is a committed European through and through. He even was a member of the European parliament many years ago. The LibDems would stay in the EU if they had the power to make that happen.
Ok. But that all seems like water under the bridge now.
That Clegg lost his own seat - does not that mean the “leave” campaign was right, and Clegg wrong, about the sentiment of his own people?
Was not Corbyn an “insipid” campaigner to stay in the EU, according to his critics?
UKIP losing tonight could just be a sign that their job is done, they’ve won the Brexit war, and now the more socialist of them can feel free to vote for Labour again.

It involves a tube, I’m pretty sure. At least, I think that’s what we bought. And I’m pretty sure that’s what he said.
I should probably watch some Youtube videos. Maybe tomorrow. Later.
I’m getting my first bike (trike, actually) in years and years. This maintenance thing you refer to… wha? Do I have to know this stuff? I can’t just get on and ride it?

Yeah, bike tires are tubed. I’m mostly just rambling now. Perhaps I should sign off myself.

We have the floor pump but I have no idea on the tire levers. Or really what I’m doing at all.

Am I the only one who hasn’t met with the Russians?
Well, my wife’s brother’s wife was a Soviet citizen, so I guess I’m compromised. (My SIL despises the GOP: She sees them as a more open version of the CPSU.)
Over the years I’ve danced with many beautiful Russian women… so I guess I’ve “met” with the Russians…

I’ve changed flats in the middle of nowhere, I’ve patched up tubes in the middle of the desert. You know what sucks? When your chain breaks! I’ve put together a broken chain miles away from the nearest town. And don’t even get me started on drivetrains! Derailleurs, chain rings, and cassettes, those things are fuckin’ finicky!
If you mountain bike long enough, you get to be pretty good at bicycle maintenance.

That Clegg lost his own seat - does not that mean the “leave” campaign was right, and Clegg wrong, about the sentiment of his own people?
Maybe. But he lost to Labour, not the Tories, and there was a lot of tactical voting going on in this election from what I’ve read. The LibDems still gained overall, and apart from the SNP they are the only party unabashedly representing the pro-EU constituency.
UKIP losing tonight could just be a sign that their job is done, they’ve won the Brexit war, and now the more socialist of them can feel free to vote for Labour again.
I mostly agree with that. It was always likely that UKIP would become irrelevant after Brexit, especially since Tories have now adopted 100% of their positions.
re: #199 Quoth the raven, Covfefe.
Might as well go for broke. I pushed myself to the absolute limit mowing the back yard (it is on a 30-degree sloped hill, and is 4’ tall.) When I ran out of gas in the mower, I knew I was not going to finish today. Alas, poor Yorick, I knew him well.
You should use a scythe. That sort of terrain is much easier to mow than with a lawnmower.

I have a road-ish bike with big fat wheels. I mean, not like HUGELY fat wheels, but not the skinny little road bike wheels either.
A casual bike, really.
I want to take it over to the coast and do some riding there but I also want to run some of those paths too. Except that’s a long drive to then go for a run. I’m lazy. The fewer obstacles between me and going for a run, the more likely the run is to happen.

I’ve used the weed eater to great effect, although I find I go through trimmer line like crazy when I do that. Plus, using the lawn mower is fantastic cardio and arm exercise.
Because Sinn Fein is up to 7 seats, that means Parliament will have 643 voting members. Which means the Tories need just 322 seats. BBC was projecting them to win 321, just one short needed to place a PM.
Surely among the misc parties, the Tories can find one vote.
No, Bernie Bros, this is not a “win” for Bernie.

Come to the wild north country. We have hundreds of miles of lakeshore trails for you to run and ride and enjoy. There is terrain to suit any challenge you wish to put yourself to, and scenery beyond compare.
re: #222 teleskiguy
On this ride (35 miles, 2000’ elevation gain, almost 5000’ elevation downhill) I had to replace a tube on my rear wheel and my buddy (who snapped the photo) broke his chain. That was some epic mountain biking.

Hmmm. Running for miles and being lazy do not go together well. I hardly think you’re lazy. Me on the other hand….

To me, an outsider, it looks like Labor is winning more from the SNP than defeating the Tories, who are now down just one seat.
Here’s something that might help explain that:
Imagine how well Scot Labour might’ve done if they’d been 100% behind Corbyn and focused their attack on the Tories and not the SNP. #GE2017

From what I understand, the UK has the same craptastic first-past-the-post election system as Canada, which means if the vote in a progressive riding splits between several progressive (or at least non-conservative) parties, the conservative can eke out a plurality win. That’s how Steven Harper’s wannabe-republicans won a majority government with only 39% of the popular vote.
re: #229 Quoth the raven, Covfefe.
Also, we use fat-tired bikes to ride across lakes in the winter. I have a friend who is an avid biker and I’ve seen his photos and videos. Crazy motherfucker.

In all fairness, Labour has performed far better than I’d anticipated. But, it’s certainly not a “win” for Bernie.
As for PM May, this is a debacle; I’m pretty sure that metallic scraping sound I’m hearing all the way over here near the border of Poland is the sound of Tory knives being sharpened.

It’s the same with anything, really. When I work on a mechanical project, the biggest hurdle is just getting started. I hem and haw pulling together my tools and fussing around with arranging the environment. Once I actually start execution, everything flows freely until the job is done.

A scythe is better for cardio and arm exercise. A scythe requires aerobic exercise (swinging at the waist to move the implement) as well as arm exercise (aiming and holding the scythe in a position to mow grass or weeds within an inch of the ground requires real exercise).
I am glad I gave up my gasoline lawnmower: No gasoline, no noise, and can cut closer to obstacles than my lawnmower could reach.
My farmer neighbours also give me a thumbs-up for tradition.

The Tories are now 2 for 2 on their party’s PM taking a strategic electoral gamble and having it blow up in their face in truly spectacular fashion.
I was about to say that Brexit seems to be the gift that keeps on giving, bringing down David Cameron, sabotaging Boris Johnson’s hopes at being PM, and now may be the end of May’s short time on the throne.

From what I understand, Scotland is sort of a weird thing politically. The SNP dominates because the overarching issue is Scottish independence, but that the party doesn’t have a unifying economic policy.

By American standards, they seem pretty liberal. Surely they are not like the hard core socialists in the UK, but most SNP voters wouldn’t vote for Trump, I propose.

I’ll second that. MN has created a ton of great biking trails and it’s a very bike friendly state. I’ll put in a vote for the Root River Trail in SE MN. Really beautiful ride with small towns to explore along the way.
I’ve got some okay Instagram posts of my bike named Big Red. I really like this one, taken on Mad Creek above Elk River outside of Steamboat Springs, CO.

I hope Andrew Sullivan is rolled up into a gently sobbing ball this evening.
Just been listening to the BBC all night and am amazed to see May just blunder her majority away. Now Six of her Ministers have lost their seats. She’s probably going to have to depend on Northern. Ireland Unionists to keep the Tories in office.
But she’s toast. She’s going to get dumped.
re: #250 DanielKi
There’s the small catch that it also means leaving the EU…
However, it looks like the Tories may need support from Northern Ireland’s DUP and the DUP (Democratic Unionist Party) wants a soft Brexit.
The end result of this could well be that a hard Brexit is off the table.

Tire levers plastic thingies that usually come in packs of 3 - because it’s a lot easier to change a tube using 3 than using fewer.
You use them to flip the bead over to the outside of the rim. You DON’T use them to put the bead back over to the inside, unless you absolutely have to.
