Trump Orders the Pentagon to Stage a Grand Military Parade, Because We’re Not Enough Like Russia Yet

Politics • Views: 35,450

The last time it was reported that Trump wanted to stage a grand May Day-like military parade through the streets of Washington DC like a real authoritarian dictator, the White House was quick to deny it and claim it was another example of liberal “fake news.”

But here we are again, folks, and this time it’s going to be more difficult to deny: Trump’s ‘marching orders’ to the Pentagon: Plan a grand military parade.

President Trump’s vision of soldiers marching and tanks rolling down the boulevards of Washington is moving closer to reality in the Pentagon and White House, where officials say they have begun to plan a grand military parade later this year showcasing the might of America’s armed forces.

Trump has long mused publicly and privately about wanting such a parade, but a Jan. 18 meeting between Trump and top generals in the Pentagon’s tank — a room reserved for top-secret discussions — marked a tipping point, according to two officials briefed on the planning.

Surrounded by the military’s highest-ranking officials, including Defense Secretary Jim Mattis and Joint Chiefs Chairman Gen. Joseph F. Dunford Jr., Trump’s seemingly abstract desire for a parade was suddenly heard as a presidential directive, the officials said.

Unless they’re preparing a massive infrastructure program for D.C., the streets and bridges simply cannot support any sort of parade. Even if you found a parade route that avoided every single bridge (pretty much an impossibility), the roads would be buckled and pockmarked for weeks afterward.

In high school, I used to have to be part of an Independence Day parade. Did it with the dojo I trained/taught at, we’d have a bunch of students walking the route, we’d stop and do some basic moves for everyone. After the parade we’d have to do demonstrations at the park. As much as I liked doing demos back then, I always hated that parade, but that might just be an anti-parade bias (I don’t even like the Rose Parade).

Parade bias or not, there is something seriously wrong with Trump wanting something like this. Seriously, when was the last time the US staged some sort of military parade like this (not including Sherman’s March)?

Tanks in the streets of DC to make a “big man” with a small dick feel like a “big man”.
Do it. Crush the water and sewer lines. Don’t sweat the gas lines. Fuck up parking lots and streets and roads. Fuck up the infrastructure. Fuck it up good. Heavy tracked vehicles on weight limit streets. Missiles. Troops. Spend millions. More. Fuck it. Billions. It’s all for the Vets. The ones we can’t afford to take care of. They knew what they were signing up for. Then say we can’t afford to fix them. The roads. Not the vets. Fuck them.
Maybe he can request they march in goose step? So precise. So military. So Nazi. Soviet. Red Chinese. North Korean.
With a big contingent of Evangelicals in the front with Bibles and flags and Stars and Stripes and waving the very Constitutions they wish to burn. Grabbing pussy. Moving like a bitch. Locking her UP. With Bikers For Trump in cuts and Harleys jerking off doing crank. Columns of ICE storm troopers who keep the nation safe. Trump’s very own MAGA. His private army, security, tactical group. Privately funded and beholden to none but the Don. Demanding the nation shut down for MAGA APPRECIATION DAY, formerly known as July 4th. And a CCCP styled Politburo, reborn in the arranged marriage of vulture capitalism and cult christianity, on stages to witness the rebirth of fascism wrapped in Red White and Blue with “god” at the wheel and fealty to the state now demanded. The news services and press fall over themselves as they announce the pivoting of a career criminal into a world leader. So presidential. So very.

Trump wants it before the midterms.

Trump officials had discussed Memorial Day on May 28, and July 4, but the Pentagon prefers Veterans Day on Nov. 11 — in part because it would coincide with 100th anniversary of the victorious end of World War I and therefore be less associated with the president and politics. “That’s what everyone is hoping,” said the military official.

I have a totally different theory on why he used the term treason to describe the failure of Democrats to applaud his terrible policy. He is trying to diminish the meaning of the term — to make it seem like some trivial offense — so that when the Mueller team shows that he is actually a traitor, his supporters will think that it is not a serious charge — that it’s on par with Clinton’s deceit about a consensual affair.

It would have been for his coronation inauguration though, and if the generals were good with it, they’d probably would’ve done it then.

Hopefully someone sane puts the stop to this. If not, well I guess we go a little more nuts before we as a country get sick of this shit.

I remember, growing up in the most Conservative county in PA, that the flags were flown on significant national holidays, not year ‘round. The military was respected, not worshipped. We - all of us, left and right - made fun of the May Day parades in Moscow and Havana s over-the-top spectacles you only put on when you’re second best, trying to pretend to be bigger and scarier.

Yep exactly. We grew up respecting our vets but not worshipping them. They were men like our fathers, grandfather’s, uncles, etc.

“But we haven’t had a parade in decades, not since WWII. And we have regular displays of support for the military at everything from sporting events to the opening of new malls. Not to mention the millions of dollars in defense funds that will be spent on this parade rather than actually supporting our serving and retired soldiers.”

Imagine a square of select troops suddenly falling out of formation and going into a professionally choreographed dance routine. Others could demonstrate basketball technique, break step and walk down the street high-fiving people, or do cheerleading stunts.

It doesn’t help Nunes’ case that he never read the warrant, his understanding of it comes second-hand (i.e. Trey Gowdy’s notes). So the man writing down all these accusations and allegations of what was and wasn’t in the warrant is reliant upon the person who actually read it not missing anything or lying to him.

Off-topic: NPR has responded to my calling out “Morning Edition” for having the Center for Immigration Studies without saying what that group actually represents.

—-

Thank you for contacting NPR.

We value your feedback and we shared your thoughts about the Center for Immigration Studies with our standards and practices editor, Mark Memmott. He noted that, as a news organization, NPR does not automatically apply a label to a group because others have done so. However, he also acknowledged that it may be helpful to mention that the SLPC has labeled the Center for Immigration Studies a hate group when the organization is mentioned or introduced in our coverage.

NPR broadly prefers to use action words that describe a group’s beliefs, etc., rather than labels. In recent situations where CIS has been mentioned or introduced during a story on on Morning Edition, the organization has been introduced using language that explains their stance on immigration.

After you wrote, Memmott also issued guidance to the newsroom about the use of “chain migration”:

It’s long been our position that “when language is politicized,” we should “seek neutral words that foster understanding.”

In the immigration debate, one side has latched on to an old term that in the past seemed neutral: “chain migration.” The other side talks about “family reunification.” As [reporter] John Burnett has said, they’re arguing over “the visa program through which immigrants already residing here can bring their family members over.” …

In our reports, we should explain how the two sides are using the phrases, or attribute the phrases to them. Use action words, as John did, to describe what it is they’re talking about. But we shouldn’t simply adopt one or the other.

We welcome you to review the full guidance. As always, decisions about the language used in NPR’s programming are ultimately made by reporters and their editors. We appreciate your thoughtful feedback, and we shared your note with the staff of Morning Edition for future consideration.

Thank you for listening and for taking the time to share your perspective.

Pittsfield, Massachusetts has the largest Memorial Day parade in the nation, usually carried live on PBS. When I was a Navy recruiter there, I was tasked with marching with the National Ensign at the head of the parade (my small bit of television fame).

Not to want to rain on the parade, but there were four MO lege seats up in tonight’s Special, and, despite the major vote swings , Republicans still won two, the Dem one (the fourth is still undecided AFAICT) That Dems can win (and that voters will shift parties in discernible numbers) in ruby-red districts like in Missouri, is certainly a good sign - especially in the face of big GOP spending on what would otherwise be “safe” seats - but the bottom line is still going to be how many Dems actually get elected and seated next January. And despite the Republicans’ burgeoning unpopularity, it’s still an uphill trek.

And the wingnut press would scream “TREASON!!!” while the “liberal” media made excuses for why protesting during such a spectacle is “disrespecting our troops.”

Every last protest can show that they are disrespecting the president* bone spurs, not the troops . Perhaps this can highlight how badly many of the troops are treated (send them back where they come from) while lip service is given each and every day.

No other country in the western world carries on about the troops as does the USA. I find it disgusting to “celebrate” troops at war which happens way too often. It turns into a celebration of war and takes away any ideas of NOT continually being at war.

Heh, 4th car:

SpaceX’s First Falcon Heavy Rocket to Launch 4th Electric Car to Leave Earth

CAPE CANAVERAL, Fla. — SpaceX is poised to make history by launching the world’s fourth electric car into space.

Years in the making, the commercial spaceflight company is preparing to launch its first Falcon Heavy rocket, which as its name implies, is a heavy-lift booster built from a core stage and two of SpaceX’s Falcon 9 recoverable rockets. According to SpaceX, when the Falcon Heavy lifts off, it will be “the most powerful operational rocket in the world by a factor of two.”

Only NASA’s Saturn V rocket, which carried six crews — and three electric cars — to the moon almost 50 years ago, could deliver more payload to orbit. (The space shuttle had more thrust at launch than the Falcon Heavy, but had a lower payload capacity.)

To me, this all seems like spending 50 million dollars on vanity plates.

A lot of people are dunking on Mr. Musk, but there is something else to consider.

This is a test launch of a rocket never used before. One of the elements of the test is putting a bunch of weight in the rocket to see if it works without blowing up on the pad.

Putting a multi-billion dollar payload in the rocket would be one heck of a risk.

Putting his own car in the rocket provides the weight, and is a somewhat cool advertisement for the idea of space exploration. Getting people interested in that idea requires more than endless pages of maths books. Launching his car into space is one heck of an advert.

And by desperate, I mean willing and able to barrage the country with what will probably be the vilest campaigning imaginable. And a vast amount of it.

Too bad he unfortunately shares an uncanny resemblance to Donny Jr in this video :(

Can someone give me a brief tutorial on how to embed tweets? I’ve been here way too long not to know how to do it, but I don’t know how to do it.

I just right click the date on the tweet, copy that link, then paste that link into the comment.

The Donald J Trump Presidential Library.

They’re preparing it right now!

I wrote my brother-in-law noting Mr. Musk doesn’t get to claim the first car in space (noting the three cars NASA sent to the Moon).

He responded back “Yeah, but NASA doesn’t get to claim the cool factor. Musk’s car has a CD player and leather seats.”

That’s their populism.

And it’s all predicated on the idea that once they send off all the brown people, there will finally be enough money left over to make a safety net again.

Except all that money will remain funneled into the pockets of the people actually fucking over their financial well being.

Look at that “Man of the Common Folk,” that “Champion of the Working Class” show his support for them by fucking them even harder without any lube. Surely the Bros were right when they said he would look after those folks better than a woman who’d dedicated her life to helping the less fortunate.

Personally I don’t care about his vanity concerning his hair. It may be amusing but it’s really irrelevant. We need to focus on the damage that he and his party are doing to this country. Of course, it’s possible this is the type of attack that will unnerve him. But I think we have to focus on what is important.

Any moment of humor is damn important these days. A constant diet of stress and rage is deadly to our bodies and spirits when we so desperately need to sustain both.

Does anyone else remember the revolting July 4 parade that Bush v1.0 had after the end of Iraq War v1.0 Electric Boogaloo Edition? I sure do. And I’d be reasonably happy if The Cheeto Benito did just as well in his reelection efforts as George v1.0 did.
