Different objectives. This is theater.
I had some interesting training last night, dealing with heavy bleeding wounds, such as gunshot wounds. The first thing we learned was how to use a Combat Application Tourniquet, such as this one. They are actually recommending a tourniquet be applied first if possible on a wound that is losing a lot of blood.
In cases where you can’t use a tourniquet - not available or in an area where a tourniquet cannot be applied, such as the neck - that you pack the wound and/or apply pressure. The instructors had these ammo boxes that had skin set up to look like a gunshot wound, which was connected to an IV bag so they could make liquid flow. We actually had to pack the wound until the flow stopped.

re: #15 Quoth the raven, Covfefe.
So it was F/A-18’s, and not missiles? The press releases seem a bit confused on that point.
I think probably both, but the mix has not been announced. We certainly sent some F-18 Weasels into Syria before the Allied strike teams arrived to suppress the Syrian radars and SAM systems. There are probably also some post-strike recce birds or drones (kill ‘em with fill-um!) taking pictures to see how we did.
Depending on how much we have degraded the Syrian assets (i.e., blown shit up), I would expect follow-on missions tomorrow night, especially against Syrian strike helicopters and Sukhoi jet bombers. They’ve got 25 helos and around 120 jets. If you want to shut down their ability to deliver chem weapons, those are the obvious targets.
Note:
+/- 8 strike aircraft from from the UK/France plus whatever we threw into the mix isn’t going to kill 145 aircraft. Not even close. Most of their aircraft will be in armored revetments and would require smart bombs. And it appears the UK/French strikes were on Sarin/other war gas production sites.
We’d need to launch at least 70 sorties to kill their strike bombers and helos.
We aren’t going to do that. Too risky to aircrews. I think we probably went in and busted up a few easy targets and pulled a didimau out of there to let them lick their wounds.
We’ll see in the morning, but this looks like a very limited strike scenario.
Finally, the Constitution gives Congress, not the President, the power to declare war. The President must obtain congressional authorization to use military force in Syria, and it is unacceptable that he did not do so before ordering tonight’s military action.

A few years ago, The Washington Post revealed that the often-problematic festival’s issues went way beyond appropriative accessories. But no one should blame Ryan for having a less-than-reliable majority in the House, or the president not being much an asset in the advancement of legislative priorities.
It is true, the whole GOP is to be blamed for relying on a base of support that feels no loyalty even to the party but to its own extreme-right agenda.

From ushering the largest tax overhaul in recent memory through the House, to chairing the House Budget Committee for four years, Ryan’s record speaks for itself.
And what it says is “I am a HUGE fucking hypocrite who just sold away the futures of you, your kids, your grandkids, and their kids to feather my nest FOR LIFE! When you’re worrying about how you’re gonna afford to pay your mortgage, I’m gonna be lobbying to shovel even more of this nation’s wealth into my pocket. I GOT MINE, SO FUCK YOU!”

Very sad to see that the great Miloš Forman has died at 86. A brilliant director who made only about a dozen feature films, every one of which is worth revisiting. Hair, Amadeus, Cuckoo’s Nest—an indelible legacy.

Scientists are fully capable of cult-thinking… like every other person.
However, man made/enhanced global warming is very well founded in basic science and is itself not “cult” like. The body of scientific knowledge accumulated over the last 5 centuries is what it is… an accumulation of observations and ever increasingly accurate theories.

“Always” as in “since about 2009”. ;)
Fuckin’ fuck. God damn. You know it! LGF is weird like that.
We have to keep in mind that post 9/11 the newly popular thing of “blogs” became the collecting venues for the computer owner.
Today Twitter and Facebook take that role, which is why the death-of-blogging idea has been pushed the past couple of years.
I don’t think blogging is dead, it’s just not the short-fuse gossip network that it was in 2002, given Twitter is now the gossip-fest-machine.
Anyway, LGF started off as the toy of Charles (a musician with an inner nerd) and his love of cycling and music was evident.
When 9/11 happened, this blog like so many others became fixated on the aftermath.
The reaction to 9/11 was a real test of this country. In some ways we failed, I think, in living up to our ideals, but, on the other hand, many Americans did push back against irrational hatred. It’s hard to say we took the high moral ground, given the punish-the-Arabs war that Cheney et. al. pushed on GWB and the rest of the US establishment (who because of 9/11 fell all to easily to questionable reasoning about why going to war is a good thing.)
The post-9/11 crowd here had a strong reactionary contingent. Yet, there were some of us who were not really “right-wing” (whatever that means in the end.)
I registered here while I was living in Japan. In those days, during the GWB administration, LGF played a role for me to remain connected to the daily social-feeling here in the US.
Eventually Charles had to free himself of the reactionary right that had clung onto this blog. I’m glad he did, because as these things always go - angry crowds eventually turn into lynching mobs - keeping the hate-right around was only going to make things uglier, especially as the 2008 election approached.
re: #152 freetoken
Charles has created a cool fuckin’ thing here. And it’s an *evolving* thing. Us humans didn’t stop evolving with opposable thumbs.

My morning newspaper tells me they will be late delivering due to the blizzard. The roads are not yet cleared.
I didn’t participate in the Stein mega-string for some reason. I was back from Iraq by then and should have been around somewhere. Like Charles and some others here, I was actually shocked at the prevalence and virulence of the creationist superstition among then-lizardoids. The subject had rarely come up and had not been as politicized as it would be later, and is now. Even free republic had a pro-evolution faction, long since completely extinct. Looking back on it, I think it was during that period, 2007-8, that the right wing really took control of anti-science and weaponized it as a political force.
Wow, that creationism thread is so full of logical fallacies you should be able to get a discount by the peck. /s
For example, six people thought this a good argument:
150 DesertSage Apr 20, 2008 • 2:31:43pm 6
I see the evolutionists (or the anti-creationist’s) people here are spinning like crazy….but not one of them has answered my simple question:
WHO CREATED THE PRIMORDIAL SOUP!
Just answer that one, that’s all.
ad hominem: evolutionists is not a thing. The correct term is biologists. Anti-creationist is not a thing either. Creationism has not met the burden of proof (presented evidence to support its assertions).
affirming the consequent: If there is a primordial soup, it must have been created (and therefore there is a creator)
shifting the burden of proof: Just answer that one—up to the creationist to support his position
Wow, I only have a high school education and I think I get the scientific method better than the majority of the creationist commentators on that thread. Claiming eugenics damaged the theory of evolution, Margret Sanger promoted eugenics, all the classics. It is a two thousand comment thread of ad hominem after unsupported assertion after equivocation fallacy (“it’s just a theory”).
I wonder what happened to all those people after they flounced from here?

How do we know this happened? Russia had the ships depart Syrian port days before the raid. That’s more proof of the kayfabe that was going on.
And we also know that this was a one-shot deal. There’s no sustained effort and we’ll quickly learn that Trump fired a bunch of missiles that didn’t much of anything (or churned rubble). Those precision strikes precisely hit the intended target: trying to get people to focus on anything but the corruption and criminality in Trumpworld.
It was intended to get media to focus not on Cohen and his lies to Congress about the Prague visit that corroborates yet another part of the dossier on Trump. It was intended to deflect attention.
It’s up to the media to stay on target. Far too many in the media are being used and abused by the admin or are intent on carrying water for the admin so as to maintain their access.

Before he changed to his successful format, I used to listen to Art Bell at night while he was doing a standard current-affairs program.
It was always a bit dryly “libertarian” in that sort of wild-west way. Art would have real curmudgeons call in and complain about the government, etc.
I suspect that Art realized, while having his studio in Vegas, that what makes entertainment popular is the audacity of it all.
His successful show, when he made it all about the fringe, had it’s high moments. At the height of surge of talk-radio, Art’s image would be center of the poster for Premier Radio Network and then Clear Channel, among all the other hosts they syndicated, even edging Limbaugh out of the main spot on the card.
Still, I think Bell’s success gives us a warning about America - that we’re a society of minds twisted by false information and magical beliefs. Bell was vastly superior to his rivals who tried similar stuff.
There were always conspiracy hosts on the radio, but Bell beat them all by being very entertaining. He also had the advantage that he knew quite a bit about radio, the engineering and physics, compared to his competitors, and could sound very, very convincing because of it.
I always wondered if he was surreptitiously paid by the government to spread false information about Area 51 and the testing facilities in the desert.
His worse shows were, I think, when he had on con-men like Whitley Strieber. These guests were very good at fictional stories, and many people bought into them.
Bell was a “worker” in the carney sense.
He was at his best when the callers provided the entertainment. And Phil Hendrie probably did call in as some of the weirder characters. There was one character, a preacher whose name I forget, that was quite the send-up of fundamentalists.
Anyway, Art Bell, RIP.

The mission was, “distract the media and everybody from the investigation that is closing in around me like a noose.” In that regard, it was accomplished spectacularly - for a few days, until the next figurative bombshell lands… at which time there will, no doubt, be more literal bombshells to continue the distraction.

And we also know that this was a one-shot deal. There’s no sustained effort and we’ll quickly learn that Trump fired a bunch of missiles that didn’t much of anything (or churned rubble). You create a culture where racism is a shameful thing. You make it clear culturally that racists should be ashamed of themselves, instead of being told that their racism is just another point of view, and that anyone who calls them out on it is a fascist trying to suppress their freedom of speech. You create a culture where the most powerful institutions in it condemn this sort of behaviour, instead of normalising and encouraging it.

Of course the GOP Congressman is Jim Jordan of Ohio.
He only has one script…how could he come off it, he wouldn’t know what else to say.
The Trump administration is abandoning a Justice Department threat to crack down on recreational marijuana in states where it is legal, a move that could enable cannabis businesses in California and other states that have legalized pot to operate without fear of federal raids and prosecution.
President Trump personally directed the abrupt retreat, which came at the behest of Republican Sen. Cory Gardner of Colorado. White House officials confirmed the policy shift Friday. Trump did not inform Atty. Gen. Jeff Sessions in advance of the change in policy, an almost unheard of undermining of a Cabinet official.

Or evenings.
In fact, why doesn’t Mr Bevin go the whole hog, and call for banning parents from raising children, just to be on the safe side.
How would that work with his anti-abortion stances?
“All children are wards of the state. We do with them what we please.” - Matt Bevin most likely.

Oh, I would pay for watching Ari Melber and/or Rachel Maddow interview Trumpy.
Speaking of Rachel. Next week she is going to have Jim Comey on her show. I think they said Tuesday night but I wasn’t paying close attention so it could be Thursday.
Anyway, I think it will be good TV. She will ask questions others are not asking. Giving her a whole week from first getting a copy of the book and listening to other takes and comments to the interview will give her plenty of time to sharpen those questions.
I expect her to go after the Hillary emails, etc., more than other journalists.

Her comments about Castile were unforgivable as are all her remarks concerning the Parkland massacre and, in general, anything she says publicly. But in this case I think she meant that the teenager was not likely to be a burglar because he knocked and that it’s wrong to shoot at someone who is running away. Her phrasing could have been vastly improved but that’s how I read it. Of course, sometimes I do interpret statements in the best light, even when uttered by deplorables.

I wonder what was really at the very root of Matt Bevin’s comments about the students having to stay home a Friday (weekday) while teachers are protesting?
People are upset at his comments, as they should be, but are they upset at what I would call the Kentucky cliches that Bevin seems to buy into that led to his conclusion?
And if he does think those cliches are Kentucky, then he has shown the people he governs he has zero respect for them.
I hope they run his ass out. He sure has shown he doesn’t care about Kentucky. He seems to think the people are a bad “joke.”

But where you are right is Dana has been so gun heavy in thinking it is hard to see her in any other light.
Who knows, maybe those idiots at the NRA are starting to get a feel for some moderation and a bit of reality in their commenting. Mind you this would be hard to identify with all their other hard edge bullshit.
But they are going to have a real tough time ever getting back to any position that might be considered even slightly realistic and rational. They have painted themselves into such a tough-ass position they may never be able to overcome it if/when they get new leadership and need to show a different stance on guns and gun controls.

They (and meth cookers) also seek out rural places with lots of elderly people like this to do their work.
If said burglars aren’t prepared for a person in the house when the owner knocks, they can simply make up any excuse to the owner (where does Mr. Smith live, I’m looking for a telephone, &c) and try again later.
