Just when you thought it was safe to scratch Carl Paladino from your bingo card, he rears his hideous head again.
Two Republicans cast themselves as potential successors to embattled Rep. Chris Collins (R-N.Y.) after he announced he would suspend his reelection campaign Saturday while he faces insider trading charges.
New York businessman and former gubernatorial candidate Carl Paladino and Erie County Comptroller Stefan Mychajliw both tweeted out their candidacies that same day.
Paladino tweeted, “I’m all in! #NY27,” referring to the state’s deeply red 27th Congressional District.

You would think that with all their coding expertise they would come up with a system that detects this crap. After the third or fourth “Jew” a human looks at his tweets and figures out they are dealing with a racist. Who wants to advertise anywhere near this guy?
re: #60 I Would Prefer Not To
Honestly, it’s not as easy as all that. Realistically, they should have a staff dedicated to reviewing reports that are made against tweets. I’m betting they have some kind of automated review process with a variety of weighting factors, probably including number of reports in a time period and the proportion of reports from users with a blue checkmark. All of which play into the hands of the unusually well-organized right-wing jackboot brigade.

I want to make one thing clear: It is probably possible for an automated machine learning system to detect at least some proportion of hate speech with some regularity. The problem is twofold: One, people will start using euphemisms to dodge the banhammer, which will decrease the accuracy, and two, such a system will be limited in scope by its very nature. There will still have to be human oversight of the system if your intent is truly to provide a clean, hate-free platform.

I disagree. Somewhat. Charles had a similar situation at LGF. Newer accounts, overseas accounts are more likely to be problematic. I use the word Jew as an example of a problem. I’m a Jew and a rarely use the word. This guy used it in dozens of tweets. I spent thirty seconds looking through his TL and figured out he was an ass.
It’s not easy, but if they don’t protect their brand what do they have?

Also, sorry to keep beating horse, but this stuff pisses me off. Twitter has tons of data. They can use some of it to figure this out. The bots are not rocket scientists. I’m sure that many are following many of the same jerks.

On the bolded part, we agree. Regardless of the feasibility of an automated data-driven approach to monitoring and reporting, one thing is for sure: They just don’t give a flying fuck about cleaning up their platform.

The phrase “the content of our character” takes on a different meaning when it is used by those who pretend that that is all we need to establish a color-blind society. They use their color blind the way duck hunters use their duck blind. They hide behind the phrase and hope that we, like the ducks, won’t be able to see through it…So I say: we see through your color blind.

Her name is pretty phonetically accessible too. And the state had been exposed to the name for even longer than her original term because of her pops.
So we hadn’t had any rain in my yard since July 9th. Around 4:30, they started diverting airplanes from Austin Bergstrom because of a cell over the airport. I noticed because a FedEx DC-10 flew over the house at about 1,500 ft, diverting to the west and north to land after the cell had passed.
Walked in and checked the local radar at EWX and a line had formed to the east of us, not unusual. The elevation change off the Balcones fault complex into Austin (around 700’), often has this effect.
About twenty minutes later, things blew up. Huge cells exploded over South Austin. In just over two hours, we got 3.9 inches in the rain gauge in the back yard. Didn’t lose power, but it was a wild ride. Rained like a cow pissing on a flat rock. Lots of donder und blitzen.
That was in ninety minutes, people. It’s why they call Central Texas Flash Flood Alley.

On a peripherally related note, today I discovered my daughter and her husband still have their cable modem/wifi router set to its default username and password. If we can manage to have an adult conversation without being distracted by an infant and a two-year-old, I plan to offer my meagre security services.
Also, I finally got to the root (hah!) of their wifi connectivity issues. Their cable modem/router has 2.4/5.0 GHz wifi built-in, but for some reason they added a Linksys 2.4 GHz wireless router, which was glitchy to say the least. I’m recommending they ditch the Linksys router entirely.
I really can’t stand these morons who think the Democrats need to become GOP-lite to start appealing to working class voters.
Oh, and by the way, the guy who stole the 4000 at SeaTac last night didn’t do a “barrel roll”. He did a half roll and a Split S and nearly plowed it into the sound. When I was watching that I said to myself, “Well, that’ll do it. He’s either going to hit the water or pull the wings off the plane.”

He ended up turning the plane into a giant lawn dart by plowing into Ketron Island, WSW of downtown Tacoma; because that island is so sparsely inhabited and has no road links to the “mainland”, they were literally ferrying emergency equipment there all night.
There were still fuel fires going on at the crash site as of this afternoon.

Worse yet, electronic voting machines will be monitored by election volunteers, some of whom can barely manage email and their microwave oven controls.
And that’s why electronic voting machines aren’t used in Czech Republic; it’s all done the old-fashioned way, paper ballots and pens.
There was a proposal about 12 years ago to switch to electronic voting, but it died in the Parliament in a few weeks. The reason? It would’ve involved creating a new level of bureaucracy in order to ensure that there weren’t any shenanigans and the governing conservative party at the time was having none of that, thank you very much.
The BBC is absolutely fascinated with the dude who stole the plane. He’s been their top story for hours on their ‘Breakfast’ show.

It’s also pretty nice that by and large, European media spends very little time at all on Trump. After a couple of days of watching Belgian and UK news, he’s not even been mentioned once!

Gotta say, a night time launch in those 5 seconds or so with the engines running before liftoff, with that fireball pretty much engulfing the launch site, makes you wonder if everything is going OK

Canadian television spent a little time on him, presumably due to the proximity of Canada to the USA and the huge amount of trade between the two nations. None of the news programmes I watched spent more than a few seconds on him however.
So, a friend of mine was fishing in Alaska and got caught up in the plane heist. Was stuck at SEA-TAC for the better part of the day. He just got back to LI about 20 minutes ago.

A couple days ago, someone posted an article from a newspaper about rich guys getting E-mails trying to scam them, showing them a password they’ve used and trying to extort money from them over their porn viewing habits.
The suggestion was to report each one to the police, though I’ve gotten so many in the past few days if I reported everyone to the sheriff, he’d come to my house and tell me to stop harassing him.
I just got another. Each one reads exactly the same (including the bad grammar and spelling), except for the suggested amount for the extortion and the name of the sender. Interestingly, this one shows a blank for a password, whereas all the previous ones showed a password I haven’t used in years.
I put the E-mail behind the hide bar if you’re not interested, but this sort of thing seems to be sent out all over the continent the past few weeks so others you know have probably gotten them as well.
Aside from the fact I don’t give a hoot in my personal circle knows my porn viewing habits (research for my job after all), the giveaways are I always keep a piece of electrical tape over my laptop camera, and I don’t have a Facebook account and never did.
It appears that, (), is your password. May very well not know me and you are most likely wondering why you are getting this e-mail, right?
actually, I setup a malware over the adult videos (porno) web-site and you know what, you visited this website to have fun (you really know what I mean). When you were watching videos, your internet browser started off operating as a RDP (Remote Access) which provided me accessibility to your screen and web camera. after that, my software programs obtained all of your contacts from your Messenger, Outlook, Facebook, in addition to emails.
What did I really do?
I produced a double-screen video recording. First part shows the video you’re watching (you have a good taste haha …), and Second part shows the recording of your web camera.
exactly what should you do?
Well, in my opinion, $1300 is a fair price for our little hidden secret. You’ll make the payment by Bitcoin (if you don’t know this, search “how to purchase bitcoin” in Google).
BTC Address: (Bitcoin wallet address deleted with prejudice for this post)
(It’s case sensitive, so copy and paste it)
Important:
You’ve got 1 day in order to make the payment. (I have a completely unique pixel in this e-mail, and at this moment I am aware that you have read this email message). If I do not get the BitCoins, I will certainly send your video recording to all of your contacts including family members, coworkers, and so forth. Having said that, if I get the payment, I’ll destroy the recording immidiately. If you need evidence, reply with “Yes!” and i’ll undoubtedly send out your videos to your 6 contacts. It is a non-negotiable offer, that being said don’t waste my personal time and yours by responding to this message.
Meanwhile, Turkey’s financial woes are continuing. What started off as a currency crisis is now on the verge of becoming a debt and liquidity crisis……the same thing that sank Greece.
Over the better part of the last decade and a half, Turkey’s economy has been growing and kept afloat thanks to a credit bubble; notions of Islamic banking aside, the reason Erdogan doesn’t want the Turkish Central Bank to raise interest rates (which they need to do) is that he’s trying to keep this credit bubble inflated because he seems to understand that when this credit bubble pops (what we’re seeing now), it’s gonna sink their economy.

I’ve gotten about 20 of them over the last couple of weeks. My wife did a little sleuthing and determined that the ‘passwords’ came from data breaches on a few sites.

I just find it somewhat humorous (and somewhat sad, because some people with guilty consciences will respond and fork over hard-earned money).
This is sort of the modern version of someone sending you a letter or telling you “I have photographs of you in a compromising position with a woman, and if you want to get the negatives and photographs, drop a bag of money in the park tomorrow.”
Just as in the old-fashioned scenario, even if the spammer has such video of a person, there is no guarantee that that spammer will delete jack.

Pushing back:
Globe rallies newspapers to protect free press from Trump attacks
BOSTON (AP) — A Boston newspaper is proposing a coordinated editorial response from publications across the U.S. to President Donald Trump’s frequent attacks on the news media.
”We are not the enemy of the people,” said Marjorie Pritchard, deputy managing editor for the editorial page of The Boston Globe, referring to a characterization of journalists that Trump has used in the past. The president, who contends he has largely been covered unfairly by the press, also employs the term ”fake news” often when describing the media.
The Globe has reached out to editorial boards nationwide to write and publish editorials on Aug. 16 denouncing what the newspaper called a ”dirty war against the free press.”

Harambe showed me what had happened to America: in the anonymous and egalitarian Internet, anyone’s opinion is as good as anyone else’s.
In the real world there are experts who are trained and then called upon to make educated decisions.
America has decided that when we disagree with those decisions at a gut level (granted, sometimes even experts are sometimes wrong) then it is time to dismiss the very concept of experience and training and “elites”, and appeal to “common sense” solutions that play well in the media.

All IPAs lose flavor rapidly over time, only a few can still be good after two months.
I don’t agree, nor do many producers of American style IPA. Hops serve many purposes; as preservative, as bittering agent to balance sugar and alcohol, and as an aromatic and flavoring. Highly hopped beers beers will often improve with age; you may lose some of the aromatics, but the aging process will generate new chemicals to give different aromatics and flavors. The whole point of the original IPA was to create an beer that would survive transport to India. So, it was hopped at a much higher lever than the traditional British pale.
Who in their right mind thinks it’s appropriate to secretly record the White House chief of staff in the Situation Room?

Greets and saluts from the soggy NYC metro area.
We got over 4 inches of rain here, and a few towns over saw serious flash floods that swept away more than a dozen cars from a dealership in the blink of an eye.
Lots of flood damage in neighboring towns but thankfully not much here. I might swing by the Great Falls later to see the output.
But that’s not what has my blood boiling - it’s that right wing extremists are continuing to enable a corrupt and complicit Trump admin and GOPers are going out of the way to claim that Trump isn’t a racist when every single action and utterance since before he ran for president shows that he is indisputably a white nationalist pushing a racist agenda.
A year after Charlottesville we have to be reminded that Trump equated goddamned Nazis with the people protesting them.
Let me repeat: Trump equated the goddamned Nazis with the people protesting them.
That singular statement encapsulates everything wrong with Trump and the GOP.
They back this white nationalist because they ARE the white nationalist party.
And you have to be willfully blind to those facts to claim he isn’t racist. His policy choices are racist. His immigration policy is racist. His domestic agenda is about punishing minorities and women to give white guys a boost (to their egos, if not their bottom line) by screwing minorities out of hard won civil and voting rights advances over the past 100 years.

I don’t know if local NBC puts up video of this local political show. I hope they do, because the Ohio GOP chairman, Jane Timken, was making me woozy from her spin.
I will post video if I can find it.

I think Omarosa would be fine with the FBI getting hold of her recordings if those tapes end up hurting Trump. All this drama will also extend her 15 minutes of fame.

Did Twitter give Duke a half day suspension?
Yeah. But Jack sent him a dozen of Dunkin Bavarian cream donuts and a gallon of coffee to apologize for the inconvenience.
Love Pelosi explaining on MSNBC that Republicans shouldn’t be selecting the House Leader for Democrats.
Omarosa isn’t a hero.
She’s complicit and compromised. That’s why she was in Trumpworld to begin with. And now she sees a way of extending her 15 minutes by being a foil?
Yeah, that’s not going to work for me.
She allowed herself to be used by Trump when it was convenient for both. Now she’s going to try and parlay her notoriety?
Nope.
The FBI will take the evidence. And send her on her way.

And in particular, there was a segment on CBS Sunday Morning about GOP Senator Tim Scott from SC, who says he doesn’t believe that Trump’s a racist.
Yeah, he’s deluding himself when Trump’s own statements and actions say he is a raging white nationalist pushing a white nationalist agenda.
Oh, and Scott is African American for those who aren’t up on who he is.
Trump uses Scott wherever possible to try and blunt the claims he’s a goddamned racist.
It isn’t working - most Americans and more than 80% of African Americans think Trump’s a racist POS.

My parents and I were talking about Trump Friday, and we agreed that Trump is a salesman, and his biggest strength is that he can identify how you want to be conned and play to that. Scott wants to believe Trump’s not a racist, so Trump made himself not appear to be a racist for Scott.

My husband had a form of dementia, and in one of the early stages, he “saw” things. He had the police come to the farm because there was a car up on the hill with its headlights on us. [It was the pole light in the yard.] Once, he was sure he was holding a baby, and it got smaller and smaller until it slipped from his fingers, went down a crack in the floor to the basement. I’ve not seen this mentioned yet, but at no time last year did was a security clearance granted to Omarosa In other words, the only way she could enter the Situation Room was under the supervision of a person with appropriate clearance (Kelly) and any classified materials would immediately need to be removed and/or covered up so she could not view them. And she had to surrender any recording devices before she entered the room, which is usually not on the honor system.

Hell, we don’t even need the actual fight…just the run-up and weigh-in will be epic!

Probably a combination of factors:
1. The bikers will present themselves as adulatory fanboys, and since fanboy adulation is all the Asshole-in-Chief cares about, it’s all just irresistible.
2. The bikers are a useful prop for his obsessive ragging on Harley-Davidson for (correctly) blaming his asinine tariff regime for their sending production abroad.
3. It’s a [not-so] subtle shout-out to the neo-Nazi/bigot/white-supremacy faction that Trump is “on their side” (just a coincidence that he meets these characters at the WH on the weekend of the second “Unite the White Right” rally? Don’t think so).

That’s both a tough read and a fascinating one at the same time.
The one thing that is hitting me is the small world, weird path crossing of the driver of the car, James Fields Jr., being from Ohio and one of the guys badly hurt and lying right next to Heather Heyer, Bill Burke, was also from Ohio.
And both found themselves in Charlottesville that day on completely different political stances. Wow.
“Everyone knows Omarosa loves to record people and meetings using the voice notes app on her iPhone,” a source disclosed. “Don’t be surprised if she has secret audio files on everyone in that White House, past and present staffers included.” 👀 https://t.co/nEvZXmp6nX

Reading Rick Wilson’s book. It’s a good read. He pulls no punches, writes great insults, takes a fair amount of responsibility.
But….
He doesn’t let you forget he’s Conservative, and so you’ll end up rolling your eyes at certain points, like when he compares Obama’s followers to Trump’s. Yeah, there was a lot of silly, unearned praise - the Nobel Peace Prize comes to mind - but mostly, Wilson misses that what people liked about Obama was that he talked to them like they could understand complexities, and he showed a glimpse of a better future that we could have.
He talks about all the things that Conservatives hated about Obama, and a couple things really struck me: his support for bailing out Wall Street and the auto industry. Here, I think, you run into the dishonesty of the GOP. They offered no alternative. None. Honestly, they were happy to have him do it, because it he didn’t, they’d have had to. And it was a twofer - they didn’t have to shoulder the responsibility for something they KNEW had to be done, AND they got to bitch about it the whole time. I remember being told by wingnuts that this was Government takeover of GM and Chrysler! That from now on nothing but Chevy Volts would ever roll off the assembly lines of Government Motors.
Well, you know, I have, sitting in my driveway, a car made by one of those companies, that should not exist, according to those folks. GM and FCA are making cars that we didn’t dream were possible in 2009. And we’ve been paid back, and our auto industry hasn’t collapsed, and all those jobs haven’t gone away.
And not one of those assholes has ever said, “You know, I was wrong.”
Another thing - in his chapter about Trump supporters, he rags on how awful the education system has become in the last 50 years, that this is how we got the “poorly educated” who’d fall for Trump’s bullshit. Then he says, correctly, that Trump’s fan base is mostly older folks. O-o-okay… Doesn’t that mean that they AREN’T the products of the current education system? And that those who oppose Trump and see through his bullshit ARE?
This is what’s wrong with Wilson’s book. He’s still stuck in the Republican mindset. There’s Mea Culpa in it, but not nearly enough.
So, while I have huge respect for the man for standing up, being the Voice That Crieth In The Wilderness, he’s still full of shit. As I’ve repeatedly said, I look forward to the day when Republicans go back to just being wrong about everything, instead of being fucking Nazis.
Why do 45 and Republicans in Washington do this? It’s simple: they’re afraid of @MaxineWaters, they’re afraid of me, and they’re afraid of the avalanche of women who are going to be winning their elections in November.

Charlie Pierce summed up the week in a manner that indicates he would fit in well here:
Hey, did you hear what Omarosa wrote about the presid…no, I can’t. I just can’t. This is one I’m leaving alone. Turning the executive branch of the United States government into a late-night cable access show is not something of which I want to be a part. Did he pay her off? I don’t care. Rich guys love bikers.
Back in the day, I was in a band that played a lot of parties for a certain high-profile MC club in NYC. One of their biggest benefactors, believe it or not, was Malcolm Forbes. There used to be a club downtown called The Cat Club, where said club would hang out on Thursday nights. And every week, Forbes and his bodyguard would ride up on Harleys (Forbes had a huge collection of them), come into the club and buy the bar drinks for two hours, then go out and get on their bikes and ride home. Forbes never drank, but he’d drop a bundle on that club every week.
One July 4th, the MC club would have a party at their clubhouse on E. 3rd Street. We played one year, and we were among the very few non-members who actually got to hang out in the clubhouse. There was a chef making the food for the club, and we learned that the chef was loaned to the club by Malcolm Forbes.

I usually drink Stella Artois at home and enjoy it. Here, it’s stronger, sharper, much more tasty. I’ve been having the Big Glass with every meal outside of breakfast.
We had waffles from a street vendor in the Grand Place yesterday, and we found a place that actually gives waffle lessons! We’re going to do that on Tuesday.
Can’t speak to the chocolate, haven’t had any yet. But we passed an absolutely huge Godiva chocolates store on the tour bus this afternoon. We’ll get around to that sometime this week as well.
We did go to a small patisserie and bought a big box of pastries. They look so good, it’s almost a shame to eat them! We got a bunch that looked exactly like sushi, and some that looked like wontons. I can’t devour the sweets like I used to - I had three of them in one sitting last night and couldn’t do any more.
The food in general has been excellent, everywhere we’ve gone. I can feel myself gaining weight, but it’s worth it.
