Florida’s Trump-Endorsed GOP Gubernatorial Nominee DeSantis Says Andrew Gillum Would “Monkey Things Up”

Politics • Views: 37,529

YouTube

They’re already trying to pretend it was an innocent remark, not racist at all. Yeah, right.

It was even too racist for Fox News. That’s how you know it went way beyond a “dog whistle.”

“Ron DeSantis was obviously talking about Florida not making the wrong decision to embrace the socialist policies that Andrew Gillum espouses. To characterize it as anything else is absurd,” Stephen Lawson, the communications director for the Ron DeSantis campaign, said in a statement. “Florida’s economy has been on the move for the last eight years and the last thing we need is a far-left Democrat trying to stop our success.”

Later in the hour, the Fox News anchor read the DeSantis camp statement and felt the need to address his remarks, saying “We do not condone this language and wanted to make our viewers aware that he has since clarified his statement.”

“Clarified his statement.”

Republican politicians know exactly what they’re doing when they say things like this; they’re appealing to the people who voted for and still support Donald Trump. And their excuses and diversions are simply pathetic. The entire GOP is rotten to the core.

GOP delenda est.

There are ZERO redeeming features remaining with the GOP. None.

Claiming to be the Party of Lincoln does a grave disservice, and the GOP tries to ride on the coattails of a more than a century ago, even as they’re trying to roll back civil and voting rights by more than that.

Trump and the GOP are doing incalculable damage to the nation, and the GOP bigot brigade base loves every moment of it, because it’s all grievance politics all the time from them. They think Trump is helping the angry white base that hates that minorities are afforded equal rights and protections under the law - things the angry white base (specifically but not limited to angry white guys - have taken for granted).

I hope McGahn is sick of Trump and just unloads everything he knows to Mueller. He probably knows a lot since he was part of the Trump campaign from the beginning.

But I’m not sure this one actually matches.

The phrase “That’s working. Don’t monkey with it.” is one I have heard plenty (not so much recently, I guess.). I think he was going to go for “don’t monkey with it” stopped half way and started to say “don’t mess it up” and got “don’t monkey it up”.

He starts out by saying how articulate and effective a candidate Gillum was, so unless he was going for “let me say something outrageous to troll the left” it doesn’t really fit.

(From the thread) DeSantis stood in a makeup room after his segment was over, ranting like a guy at a bus stop yelling at his socks about Peter Strzok, Hilary Clinton, the pee tape and nefarious plots by invisible “international elites” (AKA JOOOZZ!)

This is the thing that I find most odious and alarming about the modern GOP.

They’ve taken the batshit crazy people who were justifiably at the fringes of political life, and promoted them into positions of real power and authority.

Anyone got any theories as to why?

The problem with Hillary’s “no evidence of hacking” defense is that none may exist. “[C]yber experts are saying that there is no way she could know whether her account was ever compromised by hackers,” @NatashaBertrand wrote in March 2015.

so this whole, detailed story that explains exactly how they did it with “courtesy copies” etc is just complete and total speculation. ie bullshit

I’ve never heard the ‘expression’ “monkey it up” until today.
I suspect it was a racist word substitution for “fuck it up” or “muck it up”. Yeah, he probably meant to say “muck it up’, but because of the ‘m’ and the ‘k’ sounds he made a Freudian slip revealing what he thinks about a black rival for office.

I have heard the expression “monkeying around” but always just referring to kids playing unheedfully with Dad’s expensive equipment or tossing projectiles in front of the glass cabinet with valuable stuff in it. I am sure there are those who have used it to single out minority kids playing though…..

Yeah, that’s why I think this is most likely a slip of the tongue. “Monkeying” with things was a relatively common phrase at one point, and so is “messing it up” or “mucking it up”.

In fact, if the guy uses the phrase “don’t monkey with it” all of the time, he might have been advised not to use the phrases, which could lead him trying to switch it mid way.

3,000 killed and Trump thinks this was great.

Not a single hearing. Not anyone from FEMA or USN or Sealift Command or Airlift Command grilled about the inadequate and incompetent response to the hurricane in Puerto Rico and USVI.

3,000 killed, and Trump thinks it was swell.

Fuck him.

3,000 died on his watch because he refused to act. He failed to act even when the scope became evidence hours and days later.

Weeks and months later it was the same story. Instead of airlifting and moving equipment to help (we have an entire branch of the military that does these things), Trump claimed the ocean slowed things down or prevented a response.

Bull shit.

We have the capabilities. Trump never activated them so we could use those resources to help.

And now Puerto Rico is in the middle of the current year hurricane season and it’s barely getting by with a patchwork grid that tends to fail the moment the winds kick up.

Just heard Sasse on NPR say we should honor McCain with ethics reform and the end of careerist politicians. Very well but McCain was on his fifth President in Congress and wasn’t exactly living modestly. Nothing wrong with being a Washington careerist but Sasse came off well intentioned but hollow in light of the career of the man he’s talking about but better than Inhofe’s Trump ass in mouth response.

Sasse supports the Koch Bros attempt to rewrite the Constitution through a Convention of States. This includes a constitutional amendment to impose term limits on members of Congress; thereby eliminating legislative expertise and knowledge and exalting lobbyists (even more than now) and unelected staff at the expense of those who are supposed to represent constituents. He is a member of the Trump brigade who has exhibited to date no interest imposing any ethical limits on the dictator wannabe currently running this country.

The question I have is whether they could have stopped them. There’s no longer either filibuster or blue slip as a way of stopping them.

Remember, McConnell canceled the traditional August Recess to deprive Democrats in tough Senate races of time to campaign.

The plan is to throw citizenship of any “other” into question. It starts with Latinos and Hispanics, but once the precedent is established it will spread to other ethnicities. I wouldn’t be surprised if this is some plan by Miller with the hope of getting this issues into the courts in order to get a ruling on birthright citizenship. Possibly the hope of finally overturning Wong Kim Ark with Kavanaugh on the bench.

Okay, so let’s say the Dems slow them down, and as a result folks like Manchin, Heitkamp, Nelson, and Tester have fewer days to campaign, and as a result, lose their races. Now the incoming Senate has a few more Republican votes, and the judiciary bloodbath goes on apace.

Or, maybe by virtue of having a bit more time to campaign by letting these confirmations through, the extra time spent campaigning saves these seats, and we come in with a 51:49 majority in the Senate, and don’t have to let Trump fill any more seats?

Which scenario is better? Either way, it’s a gamble. We’re facing a BRUTAL election in the Senate, defending 24 seats to the GOP’s 9.

putting american citizens in detention centers while they wait to exercise their constitutional rights is half way there

just because you assert they arent citizens doesnt mean they instantly lose the rights of citizens and fall into the limbo of refugees, immigrants etc

How can they even do this? What’s to stop the authorities from the same behavior at voting booths? Is there anyone in the GOP who has spoken out against this outrageous policy?

At work, not gonna play the video. Can I assume that by ‘Vocal Fry’ we’re talking about that effect you hear in a lot of young women’s voices, a scratchy kind of sound, generally also overlaid on uptalking?

Yeah, fucking drives me nuts. Mrs. FBW speaks in a warm contralto that soothes me to my very soul (mostly). Those vocal effects would have me climbing the walls.

Can’t wait (though it’s in the queue behind BlacKKKlansman and Project Finale). Funny thing: there was some grumbling apparently in the AA community because Henry Golding is really only “half” Asian; I didn’t notice—he looks East Asian to me. What’s odd about that is that I have a son who looks quite a bit like Henry Golding and I don’t see anything but my son (his friends used to get confused when I picked him up from school or a practice and they then assumed that he was adopted, because they only could see him as not-entirely-white). It’s the only situation in which I’m usually color blind.

Trump Administration borrowing Myanmar’s playbook of calling millions of Rohingya Muslims “llegal immigrants” from Bangladesh, to justify their expulsion. Now they’re calling into question all Latino-Americans citizenship.

And there it is (damn, these assholes are so obvious, instead of MAGA hats, they should wear blinking lights.)

U.S. is denying passports to Americans along the border, throwing their citizenship into question

The denials are happening at a time when Trump has been lobbying for stricter federal voter identification rules, which would presumably affect the same people who are now being denied passports — almost all of them Hispanic, living in a heavily Democratic sliver of Texas.

Sorry folks, I don’t have time right now to catch up on this entire thread (have to run to work) but if no one has suggested this yet, let me be the first.

Regarding The Washington Post story about passport applicants with official U.S. birth certificates being jailed in immigration detention centers:

If you know anyone in Latino advocacy circles (or Jewish advocacy circles, for that matter), try to get them to launch a campaign where people start wearing armbands with gold stars.

Maybe, just maybe, the perpetrators of these heinous deeds can be shamed. Maybe just a little bit.

Maybe we learn how to do this at home. I just have to wrap my head around that necessity within a worthy quality of life. Not be the person that prolongs it, and cats hide pain too well. But if its doable without epic struggles why not?

My Circe hated it (on principle — not that it was painful or anything), so I had to wrap her in a towel before infusing her. Then she tolerated it. But it is very easy, and the cat doesn’t suffer.

re: #275 ObserverArt

I didn’t even know it was a thing. I guess Katy Perry does it too, as well as many younger popular entertainment women.

One stat I saw when I was checking it out is up to 2/3 of college women are said to be doing it.

And they say it can be bad for your voice.

It’s an epidemic. Some of my high school students were doing it back in the late ’90s. Supposedly, it gives the speaker an air of sophistication or authority, so now you hear it a lot from radio and TV announcers. I heard one woman a few days ago reading a very informative report, but her vocal frrryyy was driving me up a wall, worse than nails on a chalkboard.

It can over a long time damage your vocal cords, so speech and singing coaches quickly drum it out of their students’ vocal repertoire. As Faith mentions in the YT video above, it results from a lack of air (and abdominal support for that exhalation) passing through the vocal cords. The end result, I believe, is the formation of nodes — kinda like calluses — on the vocal cords, which if you are a singer, actor or announcer can mean the end of your career.

Plus it sounds stupid.
