Soooo. 2 months ago I had to have a crown replaced due to a cavity sneaking in underneath it (I had the crown for 18 years) dentist got it done, cavity cleaned out and said no root canal needed. Everything was going pretty spiffy then the last week or so it would be senstive to hot and cold now and then and would hurt a little. Woke up at 2 am this morning damn near screaming in pain, the whole side of my face where the tooth is hurt, couldn’t breathe through my nose without pain, tooth was throbbing. I call the dentist, leave a message and proceed to do morning training (prepping for a power lifting meet in January). Dentist gets back to me, prescribes some antibiotics and tylenol 3s and sets me up with an appointment this afternoon. I go in he takes an xray and says “Hmmm if the antibiotics don’t start kicking in by tomorrow then you will probably need a root canal”. The upside is I told him the Tylenol 3s only lasted for an hour so now I have norco.

More vile anti-Semitism from an aging Malaysian autocrat

Mahathir, who at 93 became the world’s oldest head of government after starting his second stint as prime minister in May, has for decades been accused of anti-Semitism for his attacks against Jews, whom he has accused of perpetrating a humanitarian crisis in the Palestinian territories.

“If you are going to be truthful, the problem in the Middle East began with the creation of Israel. That is the truth. But I cannot say that,” he said in an interview on BBC’s Hard Talk.

Calling Israelis “special”, Mahathir, prime minister of Muslim-majority Malaysia, challenged historical accounts that six million Jews were killed in the Holocaust, arguing that the figure was four million.

When asked why he described Jews as “hook-nosed” in his book The Malay Dilemma, he said: “They are hook-nosed. Many people called the Malays fat-nosed. We didn’t object, we didn’t go to war for that.”

Other than the Duke Lacrosse case, when was the last time a credible case of rape, attempted rape, or sexual assault turned out to be false? I really can’t think of any (and as much as I generally dislike Duke and all it stands for, I did feel sorry for those guys).

That was my last straw with that asshole. I reported him to HR and the CTO, who saw the whole thing, backed me up and said to get rid of him. He was done.

It’s all projection on the part of Republicans. So when Democrats are in office, they take anything that possibly looks like a scandal and turn it into the next Watergate (see Benghazi, see the Tea Party/IRS bullshit). It’s always easy to convince yourself that if you’re playing fast and loose with the rules it’s ok because so is everyone else and only a sucker would follow the rules.

When half the Senate represents just 18% of the population, and another 20 Senators or so represent half the population, it is hard to consider the Senate a representative body.

with all of this information coming about the Honorable Judge Kavanaugh coming to light and the FBI investigation supposedly ending early it almost makes me wonder if the FBI found so much damning evidence that indicates that not only has he assaulted women in the past, they’ve concluded that he absolutely did perjure himself in front of Congress that it’s a slam dunk the other way and that they’ve found him profoundly unfit for SCOTUS?

Granted, NOTHING from this Administration appears to withstand an iota of non-partisan scrutiny, but perhaps this is something where the FBI could actually come back and tell Senator Flake that his worries were indeed justified and that the FBI would find plenty of information that could indeed be damning as to prevent his nomination going forward, sure, maybe it’s overly naïve and optimistic, and to be honest, the FBI could say that he’s every bit the histrionic lying scumbag that he’s proven himself to be and it wouldn’t matter a damn to Uncle Mitchie and the Misogyny Superfriends….

When it was created that way, more than 70% of Americans lived in small towns — agricultural places, wilderness places, etc. Less than 30% lived in the cities. The most populous state had 4x the population of the least populous.

There was meant to be a slight tilt towards the sparsely populated zones, and it’s not the least bit “slight” anymore.

That’s what I have said for a long while: the Constitution has, in effect, gerrymandered the Senate so that a majority vote can represent 18% of the population; this is a serious problem. One day the losing candidate for President will receive 60% of the popular vote. We haven’t yet come to terms with the toxic design bequeathed us by our slave-holding founders. Unless we figure out some way to repair these flaws, we will face a very rocky future, even if we survive the current disaster.

It’s complicated by slavery, as well. That 50% in 1790 included almost 400k slaves out of just under 2m people. But I suspect it probably moves opposite the power base of the House.

When it was done, the population ratio of the largest and smallest states was 12:1. It’s now over 60:1. Add to that the fact that the Constitution was written for a fairly loose confederation of semi-independent former colonies, not a modern, centralized state. There’s really NO REASON why the 579,000 residents of Wyoming have equal power to California’s 40 Million in confirming nominations or passing legislation. That’s insanity.

The problem is, of course that changing it requires 3/4 of the states to ratify an amendment, which would mean some at least would be ceding power.

When it was created that way, more than 70% of Americans lived in small towns — agricultural places, wilderness places, etc. Less than 30% lived in the cities. The most populous state had 4x the population of the least populous.

There was meant to be a slight tilt towards the sparsely populated zones, and it’s not the least bit “slight” anymore.

In the 1790 census, Virginia had 747,610 people (including 292,627 slaves), Delaware had 59,094 (8,887 slaves included). So it was over 10 times. But now we’re at about 60 times.

Well, part of the reason why rural areas are less populated is there are fewer jobs, so replacement in the workforce is less a problem than rural unemployment.

Services, OTOH, are a big problem because rural hospitals strain to stay open. The Medicaid expansion under Obamacare helped a lot, but still - you end up with healthcare deserts.

One day the losing candidate for President will receive 60% of the popular vote. We haven’t yet come to terms with the toxic design bequeathed us by our slave-holding founders. Unless we figure out some way to repair these flaws, we will face a very rocky future, even if we survive the current disaster.

We can reduce the problem with the electoral college by expanding the House to say 1,000 seats. The number of electors will more than double, going to the more populous states, making the electoral college more representative.

if Bezos, Buffett, Gates, Bloomberg, Hanover and half a dozen others put up a billion apiece (which they wouldn’t even miss), they can buy substantial pieces of land in each of those plains states, recruit and subsidize 100,000 hippie dippy liberals to go live in each of those states and write poetry, grow organic vegetables, have a buffalo ranch, etc, and vote D. Solar-powered or wind-powered and satellite internet, atmospheric capture water gadgets, they could even do it off-grid.

There’d have to be enough schoolteachers and construction workers, but city people who are frustrated by the high cost of living might like an outdoorsy place they could have larger houses, nice yards, the kids could run around outside, etc…

Getting up early, reading the WSJ and the NYT, answering emails, etc. The message is, do these things and you too will be famously wealthy like Bill Gates or Steve Jobs. Trump does jackshit every day, yet has managed to become POTUS by following the same daily habits as 95% of the American population.

Here’s an idea —

if Bezos, Buffett, Gates, Bloomberg, Hanover and half a dozen others put up a billion apiece (which they wouldn’t even miss), they can buy substantial pieces of land in each of those plains states, recruit and subsidize 100,000 hippie dippy liberals to go live in each of those states and write poetry, grow organic vegetables, have a buffalo ranch, etc, and vote D. Solar-powered or wind-powered and satellite internet, atmospheric capture water gadgets, they could even do it off-grid.

There’d have to be enough schoolteachers and construction workers, but city people who are frustrated by the high cost of living might like an outdoorsy place they could have larger houses, nice yards, the kids could run around outside, etc…

Amazon, Google, and others need to move part of their operations to states in the middle of the country. I know it’s a conceit of states like CA, but most schools have really good teachers and students learn a lot. You should see my graduating class from Abilene in 1988.

Amazon already moved their headquarters from South Lake Union aaaaaaaaall the waaaaay down here to…Kent. I assumed that was to avoid Seattle’s $15 minimum wage, but apparently not.
