re: #249 Blind Frog Belly White

(From downstairs)

I’m talking specifically about measles, though. I’m pretty sure I had measles as a kid, but I don’t remember when, and in fact don’t remember having it (them?). I remember having the mumps, and I remember having chicken pox.

Regarding Polio, people my age (born in 1957) would only remember polio as something we were vaccinated against, and something we might have heard about (March of Dimes, kids in iron lungs, etc.). I never knew anyone who had a polio-caused paralysis until I was over 30, and Mrs. FBW was working with a woman whose left arm was paralyzed. And I didn’t notice it till she pointed it out to me.

Older Boomers, who were already in school by the time of the Polio Vaccine might remember quarantines every summer, but that was all gone by the time I hit grade school in 1962.

Right — and you’re a “trailing edge” boomer. I’m just a few years older, so I got the “leading edge” lessons.

(I thought I hadn’t had measles — that’s what my dear, deceased mother said — and had myself tested for immunity and found that I had after all. If you have any question about your immunity status, I STRONGLY suggest that you find out and get yourself vaccinated if you’re at risk, given the current thinness of our herd immunity. As they keep reminding us, measles is extremely contagious and very dangerous. )

What it boils down to is that a lot of people forget or never knew what it was like before vaccines, and think we can just stop vaccinating and everything will be fine - and/or they believe that THEY can skip vaccinating THEIR kids and let everyone else bear the burden of maintaining herd immunity.

Like libertarians want to live tax free in the society created by liberalism, antivaxxers want to live vaccine free in the society created by vaccines.

Time for my measles story. I was born a year after Pearl Harbor (‘42) and my Dad was drafted into the Navy when I was about 2. While my Dad served in the Pacific, my Mom and I lived with her Dad on a chicken farm in Concord, Massachusetts. Some time in 1944, my Dad’s ship was damaged in battle and sent to Seattle, WA for repairs. The ship’s crew were given a 14 day liberty. My Dad got on the train in Seattle and headed to Boston. The trip took 6 days. When he arrived in Concord he found both my Mom and I sick with the measles. He got to spend 2 days talking at us through an open window as he never had measles. Then a 6 day train trip back to Seattle.

12 days of train travel to visit 2 days with no physical contact. My Dad loved us.

It would be too tedious to enforce that kind of quarantine. Nor am I in favor of jailing these cretins until such time as they comply. The state has a monopoly on the legitimate use of violence, so vaccinate by force as needed.

There are a lot of people who would see either of those as extreme, even if they are in favor of vaccination. But there are a fair number of people out there who can’t be successfully vaccinated, because they’re immunocompromised. Depending on the vaccine, it’e either simply pointless because they can’t mount an immune response, or outright deadly, also because they can’t mount an immune response.

Someday, some immunocompromised child will die of a childhood disease we’d largely eradicated but which returned because somebody thought vaccines would make their precious child autistic, and that unvaccinated child spread that disease where it could infect the immunocompromised child. And I hope the unvaccinated child’s parents get sued into the poorhouse for the rest of their natural lives, in addition to the public shaming.

Naturally. Reporters don’t seem to get what they are dealing with in relation to Stephen Miller. Miller is such a fascist piece of shit that if there weren’t enough hardened criminals among the detainees to cause riots everywhere they were released, he’d slip in enough GOP provocateurs to get the job done.

Wind Gust: 1.

I thought that was going to happen to me while I walked towards a bus stop in downtown St. Paul this evening. There’s layers of sleet everywhere and the wind gusts are impressive.

I saw a satellite video this morning about dust clouds from TX/NM being carried north by the storm. Sure enough, when I was walking the block from the bus stop to my house, the snow was dirty. It had kind of a reddish powder that had been blown onto the snow. It filled in the footprints and built up on the side of drifts.

To coin a phrase, it’s just another example of the (altogether unfortunate) “televisionization” of government: officials who really should know better advocating bullshit policies like this because they think that’s what their “base” - whose notions of how government “works” derives from sensationalized crap they see on television - expects to see from a “tough” Administration.

Scientists debating creationists is a perfect example of this, for a relatively less charged issue than putting people rights up for debate.

That said, there’s a bit of a paradox here, since people’s legal rights ultimately do depend on persuading others, so “fuck off, my rights aren’t up for debate” is suspect if it is used as the only PR strategy.

So the UK and the EU compromised on a delay - not short but not a year. Just six months.

It’s all a folly. The Brexiteers are not going away. What needs to happen is an election and a new set of parliamentarians to form a new government that has a clear mandate. But May doesn’t want to give up her choice spot.

What a mess.

The rest of the EU knows that the longer the delay the more likely that there will be a new UK government and one that may campaign on staying and just to junk Brexit. That’s why the Brexiteers are so angry. The longer the process takes, the more likely their aged Brexiteer supporters are to die off, frankly. Young people over all voted to remain.

Ummm, I’d agree with most of your thesis, but it’s really unlikely that there’s going to be any significant demographic change in six months or a year which will make enough of a difference in their political balance vis-a-vis Brexit. IMO it’s going to be a 50-50 shitshow for the foreseeable future.

I was looking on Netflix, and saw this. It doesn’t look like my kind of movie, it’s the who stars in it that’s funny:

Miller is such a fucking chupacabra.

Somewhere is security camera footage of him feeding on a corpse in an alley while wearing a dead raccoon speedo, with a blood-smear swastika on his raw-pillsbury-biscuit-dough chest, mumbling about how The Ovens Will Make Us Pure Again. I know it’s how he got the job, but it might be enough to get him out of there… Somebody please rid us of this fucking ghoul.

I’m kind of sad that I don’t have HBO so will be missing all the excitement come Sunday. Oh well. C’est la vie. GoT has been a great show. It will be missed.

More evidence that there is little correlation between IQ and decency or between IQ and intelligence or between IQ and judgement.

Kind of a scrawny jet. I don’t have a jet at all, though, so I probably shouldn’t be sneering.

You can’t get a Playboy jet for $5 million anymore, just a Honda CVCC subcompact.

I found this interesting little video on the psychology of anti-vaxxers. Basically they are victims of cognitive bias, and ignorance of history.

I kinda prefer this one. Not that I could afford 3 mil for a HE-162 wanna-be :D

I’m not sure I want my single engine jet’s hot exhaust blowing directly on the vertical stabilizer. I think that should have a v tail like a Beechcraft Bonanza.

I saw it in a tweet and it looked standard in the small image and I glanced at your link (same image) and didn’t notice it the second time either.

Good thread on why crackpots should never be given a “debate” platform:

[Embedded content]

I asked sweetly if the “resident theologian” at the church I picketed last Sunday has managed to get an accredited doctorate yet. He has a mail-order doctorate from some outfit in Washington state*. His followers didn’t like that at all! One of them called me an idiot and another said, “Well have you heard Dr. White debate?” I noted that debate can be taught, it’s a format but it’s not designed to get at truth. These people thought I’d just swoon over the fact that James White debates all the time (and gets paid for it, too). Ah, nope.

* His BA and MA are from accredited institutions. I can’t figure out why he went the mail order route for his “doctorate.”
