The headline says: New Species of Leech Found Near Washington, DC

Based on the headline alone, my thought was that the new species name should be Trumpera narcissusiana .

Showing how far over the edge the American religious right has gone… many appear to be full-in on Trump’s accusation about American Jews.

American Christian fundamentalists have a long history of anti-semitism, carrying on a long tradition of Christianity in general.

Speaking of database breaches such as MyHeritage, there was a larger one more recently, the second-largest in history, from an E-mail verification service used by banks, financiers, Yahoo, and others.

It was discovered on Feb 25 of this year.

Exposed data across 763 million records included email address, name, gender, IP address, phone number and other personal information, Diachenko reports.

Breach of ‘Verifications.io’ Exposes 763 Million Records (goes to Bank Info Security)

Three days later:

(Updated) 2 Billion Unencrypted Records Leaked In Marketing Data Breach —What To Do Next (Forbes)

That’s two billion E-mail addresses.

You would be unsurprised to know the company that ran the verification service shut up shop and folks can’t be found only days after the initial breach was discovered.

I don’t do on-line banking, credit, or bill paying so that doesn’t affect me. My Yahoo address is only used for me to run my Yahoo group.

Firefox notes the specific info stolen was:

IP addresses, Phone numbers, Email addresses, Dates of birth
Additional information, including:
Employers, Genders, Geographic locations, Job titles, Names, Physical addresses

If you haven’t heard about this breach, it’s because corporations are not your friends. A bank doesn’t care who takes your money, whether it’s you or someone else. A credit card company can have you settle it in arbitration with their lawyers in Delaware, &c.

For this breach security people note you should immediately change passwords (especially on financial accounts), and be extra-careful for phishing schemes since personal information was also stolen.

Yup. That’s why I was blocked by the Philadelphia Inquirer writer when he asked if there were more voter stories he could do and asked for suggestions. I suggested he come out to Trump country and interview those of us who voted for Hillary Clinton.

My brother went off on a long-planned and well-deserved fishing trip in Colorado on Saturday. He is, at least according to the texts he’s sending me, having a great time.

While he’s gone, I’m staying at and working out of my mother’s house and keeping an eye on her. What that means in practice is doing the usual chores plus making sure she takes her pills. It also means that she sleeps all day long, wakes up at 8 pm to take her pills, and then is up most of the night, dropping off to sleep about 8 am in the morning.

I picked up and brought my entire home office here—two monitors, a docking station, keyboard, mouse, and laptop. I have a Cisco soft phone which is fine, but I completely hate the Bluetooth headset I was given. You have to hook it over an ear and it is not compatible with wearing glasses. My right ear hurts by the end of the day. Oh well, first world problems. I would like to get a headband headset to wear instead.

Now if I can just keep mom from yanking out the toilet handle until my brother comes home on Friday, life will be good.

Here we go: Radar-indicated tornado on the ground south of Torrington, Wyo.
wunderground.com

That’s how our hailstorm the other day started.

The storm line seems to be moving east (though here the wind has been from the east for two days). It is also building southwest to the west of Cheyenne.

If it holds together, it’s going to be another rough night here.

All three are crossing US-85 at the same time, and are all moving towards Scott’s Bluff County, Nebraska.

Weather radio is now issuing severe thunderstorm warnings for Scott’s Bluff, Dawes, Banner, Box Butte, Morrill, Garden, Sioux (Nebr), Goshen, Laramie (Wyo), until 11 PM MDT.

The line extends from Chadron to Cheyenne, but does not extend over my town (yet). This storm line is moving east, so it will eventually come over my town.

They are warning that people or animals caught outside in the hail could be severely injured or killed.

Most of the storm complex has moved into Nebraska. More cells are growing along the front of it as it moves east.

Hecuba's daughter  Aug 20, 2019 • 9:46:06pm

Several years ago, I rolled over retirement plan assets from my previous job into IRA accounts at Morgan Stanley, that were held primarily in equity mutual funds. A few days before the 2016 election, I contacted my Morgan Stanley guy to ask him what he thought would happen if Trump won since I was concerned they would take a major hit, and his response was their experts predicted at least 10-15% correction. Of course, that didn’t happen and the Obama market continued on its merry way.

The economists who tell us what Brexit likely means or the ultimate effects of Trump’s ridiculous tariffs are all guessing. I certainly love Krugman — but again, it’s all speculation — we will have to wait and see if a recession awaits us, a collapse of the global economy, or if the US economy continues limping along, with low unemployment. Last night, a friend expressed her extreme displeasure with the MSNBC and CNN reports on signs of possible recession— that they are overstating the evidence and damaging their credibility in process.

Expert predictions of long term — or even short term - consequences are often not particularly reliable.

The weather radio just popped off again.

The previous severe thunderstorm warning area has been tripled in size. It now includes every town in my county other than mine. (We are the easternmost town, near the Garden County line.)

Warnings have been extended to include Interstate 80 from mile marker 0 to 59, and Kimball and Cheyenne Counties.

More of the storms indicated as hailstorms (squares) are being indicated as rotating thunderstorms (diamonds). The latter have the potential to produce tornadoes, but also dangerous hail.

What food is my state known for? Depends on where you are in the state.

Out west, you’re more likely to hear that Virginia is known for peanuts and Smithfield ham. Here in the east, it’s almost always gonna be blue crab, though some would swear by the oysters as well.

I think they all just use a wizard’s hat to pull out economic predictions. I think if I did that, I would be at least as accurate.

In good news, I won $12 in the lotto. That paid for my gas.

My car is due for service in ten days (my speedometer won’t let me forget that), so we’re planning a trip to Denver for it’s regular annual/10,000 mile service. (Since we haven’t driven it 10,000 miles this year, it’s an annual service. Since most of our driving is on unpaved roads and such, even if we don’t drive it much it still needs things like filters changed. Because of the dust, the interior air conditioner filter, which is normally changed every 50,000 miles, is changed every 10,000 miles for us.)

It actually rather surprised me the first time I heard people talking about Virginia peanuts like it was some sort of delicacy. I’ve lived most of my life over in Hampton Roads, so when people talk food it’s usually local seafood of some variety. But the first time I took a road trip to see family back in Kentucky, it seemed like every rest stop west of Richmond had cans of peanuts proudly identifying themselves as coming from Virginia.

We’re the peanuts from Wakefield?

Every school or church field trip to Richmond or Washington in the seventies and eighties, the chartered bus had to stop off for a meal at this diner/store/souvenir shop in Wakefield chock full of locally grown peanuts.

I’ve been to Jamestown, but that was a good long while ago. Most of the ventures my family made when I was younger were to museums, particularly science museums since that was the sort of thing I loved as a kid. But when you grow up in a military family, particularly when one parent or the other is out to sea for six months at a stretch, just taking a trip to the mall can be a treat to a kid. Then I was a college student for a few years out of high school so I barely had time between that and work to do much. And I left college just in time for the bottom to fall out of the job market, so I just now reached a point where I can afford to even consider paying the entry fees at places like Colonial Williamsburg.

What’s the old saw about economists having successfully predicted five of the last three recessions?

Regarding Brexit and its potential economic impact, yes it is speculation at this stage. That having been said, a “no-deal Brexit”, a scenario where the UK crashes out of the EU without a withdrawal agreement having been legislated, would almost certainly cause serious problems for the British economy.

But exactly just how serious those problems would be really is anyone’s guess - simply because this is all so unprecedented and there’s no past examples we can look to in order to come up with a prediction model.

When I was first stationed at NAS Oceana, my first shop had a person who grew up in Virginia Beach stationed there. (He always complained about “Join the Navy! See the world! I was really looking for something beyond First Colonial Road.”)

I hooked up with him to find out what would be good things to tour in Virginia while I was stationed there.

During that time, I also got to go to the Vietnam Veterans Memorial in Washington (the only time I’ve been), for the obvious reason of finding my father’s name on The Wall.

That place in the middle of Washington is eerily quiet. Despite a major avenue near it, it seems no noise penetrates the area around the monument (or maybe I was just so lost in thought I didn’t hear it).

Ayep. And it’s pretty much a given that the ones holding Boris’ leash have some vested interest in shorting the market and the pound, so the odds that he backs out of the death dive he’s put the UK into are next to zero. The whole of what the state considers “Virginia Beach” is really a conglomeration of small unincorporated towns that came together and decided to declare themselves a “city” for the purposes of avoiding annexation by neighboring “cities.” Hell, even today, most of what is considered part of the “city” is swamps and farms, because we dare not let Norfolk lay claim to any of it.

When I was there, they still had the so-called Green Line, below which you could not intensively develop, to preserve the agricultural character of the former Princess Anne County.

When my mother was stationed at NAS Norfolk, Va Beach was a dinky little town of about five thousand. She came to visit me while I was stationed there and couldn’t believe what had happened.

Ayep. And it’s pretty much a given that the ones holding Boris’ leash have some vested interest in shorting the market and the pound, so the odds that he backs out of the death dive he’s put the UK into are next to zero. What remains to be seen right now is if Corbyn keeps to his threat to put forward a “no confidence” vote in September.

Honestly, the only way to really stop Brexit is to revoke Article 50.

I really don’t know if there’s any political will whatsoever to do that; it’s basically the nuclear option when it comes to stopping Brexit. And pushing the button - so to speak - certainly doesn’t end the whole Brexit argument either as reactionaries and extremists like Nigel Farage would stand to gain enormously from that. His new Brexit Party would have disgruntled Tories (and other Brexiteers) flocking to his banner in that scenario.

The city’s sort of at a crossroads right now, as while the suburbs are starting to butt up against the Green Line, the city can’t really grow up like a lot of urban centers without drawing threats from the Navy to close down Oceana for good. And while the city council may say publicly that they think we can survive off tourism, privately everybody knows that if the Navy goes this place will be a ghost town within a decade. So while they want desperately to keep letting the developers build without constraint, they’re quickly running out of room to let them do so without violating the standing agreement with the rural folks.

My understanding is that Corbyn’s plan is thus:

- Put forward “no-confidence” vote and have the current gov’t dissolved
- Install a temporary “caretaker gov’t” that will call for general elections
- Have Labour run in that election on promises of holding a second referendum
- Hold the second referendum
- Profit!

What’s that you say? What options will there be in that second referendum? Corbyn won’t say, but I can’t imagine it will be any clearer than the first one.

Right after they built Lynnhaven Mall (the first Saturday it was open), we had an F-14 pilot who had a catastrophic mechanical failure in his aircraft on take-off. Rather than eject and maybe have the aircraft crash beyond the base, he intentionally drove it into the ground on the base to avoid massive loss-of-life at the mall just beyond the west boundary of the base.

The Navy raised holy hell about Muhammad Ali wanting to build a massive hotel on the east side of the base in the resort district. They came to agreement that Ali would build the hotel only 1/3 the original planned height.

Oceana’s days are numbered if Va Beach continues to allow development around the air station. I don’t think the Navy is going to want to move out to Fentress in the Dismal Swamp (plus NALF Fentress would require a whole lot of upgrades to equal NAS Oceana).

Trump has this annoying habit of wanting to talk directly to leaders of other countries. That might work for a company, but that’s not how nations run. He probably forgot he has an ambassador there, and Pompeo is too much of a lick-spittle to tell him (even though the ambassador works for him).

I just note that mainline Protestants and white Catholics also broke for Trump, not just evangelical Christians.

If Trump laid down a real insult on Christian voters, he would drive away a whole bunch of the Christian vote. The fundies would stay with him because they want power, but they are not enough of the electorate without the other Christian faiths which also broke for him.

Interestingly, Mormons were the only Christian faith which took a big swing toward Democrats in the 2016 election (they still went for Trump but only by a slim margin). It would seem they can better identify an amoral asshole than any other Christian faith.

The only Christian groups which went for Hillary Clinton over Trump were African-American evangelicals and Hispanic Catholics.

According to Pew, every religious denomination broke more for Trump than they did for Romney, except the aforementioned groups.

The only people Democrats increased their share was with Jews, other faiths, and atheists. That’s not enough to overcome all Christian faith groups breaking for Trump over Clinton. What put her over the top on popular votes were the minority (and no) faith groups.

I was thinking the other day that if Chinese President Xi Jinping wants to end the ongoing trade war on terms highly favorable to China, what he should do is invite Trump to China’s October 1st shinding. I’ve said before that Trump’s entire mindset is that of a CEO of his own private company, the king of his own private fiefdom, and incidents like these really show that. He’s a reputation for storming away from the table when it looks like the other side isn’t going to give in to his demands or (conversely) isn’t taking him seriously. And it has worked numerous times in the past, because the worry that he might walk away totally has scared others into giving into his demands. What he totally fails to realize is that he’s not offering to buy land or property from others for the purpose of building one of gaudy towers, he’s openly suggesting buying up an entire island and the people upon it. And that shit is simply not done, certainly not since the Age of Imperialism came to crashing end after WWII.

Pungo! (*hums opening of “Green Eyed Lady*)

I’m from Chesapeake (Western Branch borough), incorporated in 1963 from Norfolk County joining the city of South Norfolk to prevent annexation from the city of Portsmouth.

Also, the Witch of Pungo (goes to the Virginia History Museum).

Grace Sherwood was the only person convicted of witchcraft in Virginia.

On July 10, 1706, a forty-six-year-old Princess Anne County woman named Grace Sherwood faced an unusual legal procedure. Her hands were tied and she was about to be thrown from a boat into a river as a test to see if she was a witch. For several years neighbors talked of how the midwife, healer, and widowed mother of three had ruined crops, killed livestock, and conjured up storms. Then in January of 1706 Luke Hill formally accused Sherwood of witchcraft. The case passed from the county court to the attorney general of Virginia without any judgment. Finally, authorities in Princess Anne County ordered that the accused be “ducked” in consecrated water to determine her guilt or innocence. By this ordeal, if she sank she would be declared innocent, but if she floated her identity as a witch would be proven. A spot in the Lynnhaven River, off what is today known as Witchduck Point, was chosen, and Grace Sherwood was bound and thrown from a boat. She managed to untie herself and rise to the surface, proving to those present that she was a witch. As punishment for her crime, Grace Sherwood spent seven years in jail. After her release the so-called “witch of Pungo” returned to her home and lived peacefully until her death around the age of eighty.

In 2006, Gov. Tim Kaine gave her a posthumous pardon three hundred years to the day for her conviction of witchcraft.

He sent a letter of the pardon to Mayor Meyera Obendorf of Virginia Beach, which she read aloud during a reënactment of Ms. Sherwood’s witch ducking.

(Ms. Sherwood is the reason Witchduck Road is named the way it is. That is the alleged route she was taken to be ducked for her trial as a witch.)

He’s decided he can no longer run his shop. As such, he has now made his shop’s hours “appointment only” as of a couple days ago, and is selling all his inventory of rifles, ammunition, bows, and other inventory at clearance prices.

His family set up a Facebook page for his shop (he doesn’t do computers) with details if anyone is interested. (Mr. Mitchell has a federal firearms license and can legally ship to other places.)

Seeing Mr. Mitchell’s decline it seems he doesn’t have much longer to live. He ran against me to unseat me from the village board in 2014 and lost by four votes to me. (He’d previously served on the board but was defeated in the 2012 election.) Later, when we had a vacancy on the board and needed to fill it, I suggested he fill the seat, as he’d run for a seat when others did not. He was appointed to that seat and served until the 2016 election. He and I are about as far apart on politics as you can be, but he is a decent guy who cares about the town and had long experience on the board before I got here.

(Mitchell’s Guns and Ammo Facebook page, run by his relatives in another town. Telephone numbers for Mr. Mitchell’s shop are available on the Facebook page, along with photographs of some of the things he has on clearance. He does not sell firearms like AR-15’s or massive magazines; he sells hunting rifles and shotguns.)

In movie news, looks like there’s going to be a supercut of It - done by director Andy Muschietti. Cool.

Stephen King’s It is a hefty book. There’s so much story, in fact, that both adaptations - the 1990 miniseries, and the 2017 and 2019 movies - had to split the material into two parts. But any reader of the book can tell you that It works best as one big epic story. Thankfully, it sounds like It and It: Chapter Two director Andy Muschietti agrees - and he’s cutting together an It supercut containing both films. Here’s hoping we actually get to see this supercut, and that it doesn’t go the way of Quentin Tarantino’s never-released Kill Bill: The Whole Bloody Affair.

This is from four years ago. Though I haven’t seen anything from Nethanyu that indicates he changed his mind on this bastardizing of history. The Mufti was just one of many foreign leaders official or not that allied with Hitler. Bibi hates Muslims that much he’s willing to let Hitler off from the Holocaust and he also gives a pass to Christian leaders in and outside Germany who supported his ideology and genocide. Obviously not all Christians did, Dietrich Bonhoeffer comes to mind but not all Muslims did either and Nethanyu knows that.

I think that Nethanyahu’s polemic was more about demonizing the Mufti of Palestine (and by extension, all Palestinians, because you know how Jews just love the concept of collective guilt) than about letting Hitler off the hook by implying that Hitler got the idea of the Final Solution from listening to the Mufti.

It is. The article, and his speech, are from 2015, and it was discussed a LOT in Israel, naturally.
In essence, Netanyahu was basically arguing that Al-Husseini, (who sought to establish a large Arab state over several existing Arab states and allied with the Reich since “The Arabs are Germany’s natural friends because they have the same enemies… the English, the Jews, and the Communists”), may have heavily influenced the Final Solution, while touching on Husseini’s actions in general and his 1941 declaration on German-Arab cooperation primarily, which included the part stating:

Germany & Italy recognize the right of Arab countries to solve the question of the Jewish elements, which exist in Palestine and in the other Arab countries, as required by the national and ethnic (völkisch) interests of the Arabs, and as the Jewish question was solved in Germany and Italy.

Here’s my nightmare scenario of the next few years, even if the Democrats win in November: With the economy slowing, the Democrats win the WH in a landslide, expand their House majority, and even win a small majority in the Senate. We rejoice! Senate Democrats, looking forward to a new era of bipartisanship, retain the filibuster; McConnell chuckles. As the economy slips into recession in 2021, the Republicans demand steep domestic spending cuts to fight the alarmingly high budget deficit, and shut down the federal government, slowing the economy more. GOP approval drops, but after a compromise is reached which provides smaller domestic spending cuts and a stimulus package of big tax cuts for the rich and small ones for everyone else, GOP approval quickly rebounds while the Democrats shrink. The House passes legislation to address immigration, climate change, infrastructure, education, election reform and healthcare. It all dies in the Senate, as the Democratic majority helplessly explains that the Republican minority who control the Senate won’t let them do anything. The Democrats reinstate blue slips, and the judicial approval process slows to a crawl. With the economy stagnate and millions out of work, demoralized Democratic voters stay home in the 2022 midterms and the GOP regains control of both Houses of Congress. A Supreme Court Justice dies in early 2023, and McConnell vows to leave the seat vacant until 2025 to give the voters the chance to decide who will fill it, so the President’s nominee is ignored on the Hill, and absolutely no new federal judges are approved during the last two years of his term. Another federal government shutdown throws even more Americans out of work, and another compromise bill is eventually passed with even more domestic spending cuts combined with another big tax cut for the rich. In 2024 Kris Kobach is nominated by the GOP for President promising to put American workers first through mass deportations and wins the presidency with 45% of the vote as third party voting swells because the Democratic President’s term of office was an utter failure.

Yeah, that’s the thing. I honestly don’t see how they can do a Holland Spidey film removed from the MCU in any capacity. His version of Spidey was completely integrated into the MCU’s events.

I still imagine some kind of deal will be made out in the end, because I don’t see how they get by without yet another full Spidey reboot if the separation stays.

“Okay, okay. We’ll stop separating families and putting them in cages…they can stay in the cages together.”

These fucking people…

(USA TODAY) WASHINGTON -The Trump administration said Wednesday it was taking steps that would allow it to indefinitely detain undocumented children with their families while their immigration cases are pending.

The move, which Department of Homeland Security officials expect to be challenged in federal court, is an effort to end a 20-day limit on detaining children and families. The deadline grew out of a 1997 settlement of a federal class-action lawsuit, which administration officials said led to a boom in adults bringing along children when entering the United States illegally.

President Donald Trump tweeted a quote Wednesday from Brandon Judd, president of the National Border Patrol Council, who said the proposal “will effectively end Catch and Release and curb illegal entries.”

The effort to remove the cap on family detentions would keep families together, albeit in custody, rather than separating families by placing parents with Immigration and Customs Enforcement and children at facilities licensed by the Department of Health and Human Services. The administration’s proposed rule would allow it to license and monitor detention facilities where children could be held with their parents until their immigration cases are resolved, a process that can take months.

The move in the longstanding lawsuit settlement comes in a year when the conditions at DHS detention facilities have been widely criticized.

….yep. Called it last night, as predictable as it was, I suppose. Even the kids must be treated as hardened evil crooks and sequestered, they’re all evil guilty invaders for all their dirty brownness trying to destroy pure White America.

This is a step or two away from just straight unambiguous genocide.

re: #182 Love-Child of Cassandra and Sisyphus

As long as the remaining Democratic candidates can use a senior-issue forum to hammer home how bad Trump has been, then I don’t see a downside. But such a debate really has to be about that - how Trump has hurt America and its seniors.

And - cynical as might sound - it probably would help the Democrats (and/or the Dem candidate) little, if at all. While the AARP is quite right about seniors voting in relatively large numbers, getting them to pull the lever/mark the box for a (D) is (IMO) going to be an uphill climb. No matter how much Trump Admin or GOP policies will hurt seniors, these are also the same demographic who consume Fox/Sinclair/RW propaganda in vast quantities: and who are easily convinced - often literally - that the Republicans are the Party Of God, and the Democrats are the Party of Satan. And changing that mindset - especially among the generality of “seniors” - is going to be hard. VERY hard.

It’s the fundamental difference between the two national Parties: Democrats appeal to voters’ self-interests: Republican appeal to their prejudices. And guess which approach usually wins…

Look at their decision to not vaccinate those being held in these camps against influenza.

A bad strain of the flu - or some other viral outbreak - in such a tightly confined environment could easily lead to a significant death toll.

Bear in mind that Anne Frank wasn’t shot by some random SS Sturmmann, and she didn’t perish in a gas chamber; she died as the result of a typhus outbreak at Bergen-Belsen.

I’m not gonna lie, I’m not sure we will. I’m not sure we can. It feels like all the institutions we’re supposed to rely on to handle this, to fix this, have been subverted, possibly always were subverted, to ensure this shit persists, rather than gets fixed. That they’ve been engineered to protect and exalt Trumps rather than prevent them.

Not just our gov’t institutions, but our civil ones, like the media, the supposed arbiters of truth who have gone full in on normalizing the GOP and Trump while slamming their heels into the faces of anyone who dares criticize them from the left.

I feel like we’re hopelessly compromised as a country. I want 2020 to be a step back in the right direction. But then again, I hoped that with Obama too, believe that with Obama too, and saw it all torn down, stonewalled, and backslid in relative moments.

Meanwhile our Corporate Controlled Conservative Media continue with their rehabilitation of Sean Spicer.

Sean Spicer may have fallen from grace, but he’s landed among the stars.

Since leaving the White House podium, Spicer has struggled to land a gig that sticks. He was ridiculed when he made light of lying to the American people during the Emmys, didn’t land the coveted Fox News role he reportedly wanted, wrote a book that clearly wasn’t fact-checked and gave an inebriated interview during the State of the Union this year.

But the former White House press secretary has found an active pursuit: he’s set to be a contestant on ABC’s “Dancing with the Stars,” according to “Good Morning America.” Spicer will play the role of the “star” in the show that pairs B-list (at best) celebrities with professional dancers.

I had an thought about all of the acting department heads under Trump. Normally, the reason an action taken by a department takes a couple of years to overturn by the next administration is that they are legally required to investigate the consequences. But acting directors didn’t really have the authority to make changes. Thus, the next admin, when a head is confirmed can immediately end some of the stuff Trump has allowed to happen.

The U.S. economy had 501,000 fewer jobs in March 2019 than previously reported, government revisions show, suggesting that hiring was not as strong in the past year as it seemed. Hiring was weaker in retail, restaurants and hotels. The annual revision is much larger than is typically the case. The preliminary revision in 2018, for example, was just 43,000. Every year the Bureau of Labor Statistics updates its figures based on unemployment data that nearly all employers are required to file with the states. The current revision is one of the largest ever.

Nope.. unfuckingbelievable.

This is where we are. We have a fucknut in the WH who spews nonsense to deflect from other utter nonsense and is an anti-Semitic bigot who is using every utterance to further his agenda because you can’t keep up with the firehose of insanity that Trumpworld spews daily.

Media outlets continue to peddle straight stories as though every statement is serious - instead of spending a few moments to consider what all of this is:

Every statement is a deflection, dodge, obfuscation, or lie. Every last one.

What we know to be true about Trump: he’s a racist and misogynist. Those are his everlasting guiding principles. If you want to know why his immigration policy is what it is, it’s the racism.

Want to know why Trump mentions Jews and Israel? Because he’s deflecting and projecting.

Trump’s an anti-Semitic bigot who affirmatively quote tweets the conspiracy nut Wayne Allen Root, who is about as fringe-y as they get.

Trump doesn’t even understand what Root said and how offensive it is to Jews (because we don’t have a Second Coming - there is only G-d), only that it’s something Trump wanted to hear.

I don’t think it’s a cooking the books situation, but that the revisors found more evidence of a soft economy than they bargained for. This comes after other downward revisions last month too.

The BLS is always revising data to get the most comprehensive and accurate picture. It also trails the immediate job numbers they post (u3-u6, etc.) and the ADP payroll numbers.

No, I’m confident that the public servants at the BLS are doing their jobs correctly; if the books were being cooked, we wouldn’t have found out about the downward revision. Revisions are what happens when the data starts catching up to a changing economy; and this is an ominous sign.

Just a reminder of how off the rails Wacko Wayne is!

Root was a leading proponent of the conspiracy theory that President Barack Obama was not born in the United States.[26] At one point, Root falsely claimed that Obama was not a student at Columbia University;[4] at another point, in an interview with Sean Hannity, Root said that he believed that Obama was a “foreign exchange student” at Columbia.[5] Root has described Obama as a “Marxist, anti-American, anti-Israel, globalist, middle class-hating, Muslim sympathizer”.[5] He also claimed that Obama was gay, called him “Bathhouse Barry” and said that he had info from Obama’s “friends in Chicago” about Obama’s “sordid past”.[5] He has described Obama as a “Manchurian candidate”, possibly hired by the Bilderberg Group to destroy the United States and “kill all of us”.[5]

He promoted conspiracy theories around the murder of Seth Rich, and at various times suggested that Debbie Wasserman Schultz, Hillary Clinton, Donna Brazile, Bill Clinton, Eric Schneiderman and John Podesta were involved in the murder.[5]

During the white supremacist Unite the Right rally, Root falsely claimed that the white supremacist James Alex Fields Jr. who killed Heather Heyer was “such B.S. Probably paid actors & infiltrators hired by Soros. No conservative I’ve ever met commits violence. EVER.”[5]

Root tweeted in the aftermath of the 2017 Las Vegas shooting: “This is a real thing. Clearly Coordinated Muslim Terror attack. PRAY for our Vegas police. PRAY for victims. VERY bad. Awful.”[27] It was later confirmed that the shooter was 64-year-old Mesquite, Nevada, resident Stephen Paddock.[28] Root then defended his original claim by tweeting: “Terrible day. Liberal fools criticizing me 4 reporting what I hear DIRECT from police & credible news sources. I report it as I hear it.”[29]

Root argued that Special Counsel Robert Mueller’s investigation into Russian interference in the 2016 election is motivated by “penis envy”, because “Mueller’s is smaller than Trump’s.”[5]

Many, many moons ago, back when I lived in the US, I used to moonlight as a bartender at a nudie bar.

One of the dancers told me she’d always know when an economic downturn was coming. She didn’t even need to look at a newspaper or tune in to one of the market watch programs.

Her hypothesis was that when she was making less than $100 a shift, a downturn was coming. When times were good, she could easily make $200 to $300 a shift, no problem.

Basically, hanging out at a nudie bar and tipping the dancers involves having a good degree of disposable income and job security on the part of the patrons. If they start feeling economically insecure, or they’re worried about their own immediate future - maybe their company has imposed a hiring freeze, or rumors are floating around about impending layoffs as a cost-cutting measure - then people quit going to the nudie bar, or if they go, they don’t tip anywhere near as well.

NO SMOCKING GUN!  Aug 21, 2019 • 8:33:21am

re: #259 Dr Lizardo

I’ve dubbed it “Angie’s Nudie Bar Predictive Economic Theorem”.

This may require some research!

re: #155 NO SMOCKING GUN!

This scenario is 99% guaranteed if Biden wins. If enough Americans in the states that matter finally smarten up enough to give someone like Warren a chance, then perhaps it can be averted (at least she acknowledges what an utter filthbag McConnell is).

In 1916, residents of the Danish West Indies (Virgin Islands) approved the territory’s proposed sale to the United States by a vote of 4027 for to 7 against in an unofficial referendum. This, and the sale itself, were largely the result of a campaign led by local newspaper editor and labor activist David Hamilton Jackson. In the more formal referendum in Denmark itself, the vote was 283,670 in favor, 158,157.

They’re pushing out some models at “relatively” low prices (~$60k) as a way to phase in the new mid engined version that is automatic transmission only and going to take a major jump in price next model year. Chevy is so fucked by this upcoming recession… hope they still have the documents explaining how the last GM bailout worked.

If the Democrats win the Presidency and both Houses, your vision will not happen. No tax cut for the wealthy — more likely a repeal of most of the tax scam, with perhaps an expansion of cuts that help those of lower income. The Democratic Senate will seek retribution. And, with luck, there will be an investigation into Kavanaugh’s finances that may force his resignation. The real problem arises if the GOP retains the Senate in 2020; the President then will be stymied in both legislation and judicial appointments. And who knows what a Republican Senate will do regarding Cabinet appointments.

The Constitutional construction of the Senate and the Electoral College is so flawed that our nation may not survive.

No need for the sombrero aluminio : it’s more likely the “Greenland” nonsense is simply the Trump Administration going about international diplomacy in its usual manner: clumsily, incompetently and generally counterproductive. I guessing somebody in the Admin or the Government (?military?) has finally figured out that global warming (which of course, the Administration still won’t officially admit exists) is going to have effects on the Arctic Ocean, and there are going to be security, safety and navigation issues if/when the Northwest Passage becomes a regular seasonal thing. A normal Admin would try to deal with potential maritime problems via, say, existing diplomatic organizations (there is, I think, an Arctic Council(?) of the five nations (US, Canada, Russia, Denmark/Greenland and (?) Norway) which border the region: but since US FP is in the hands of morons like Trump and Pompeo, what we get is sensationalist BS like “let’s buy Greenland” instead.

Here in Czech Republic, it’s utterly pointless to have anything like that. The law here designates those cars as veteráni (classic cars) and that designation means you can’t use it as a daily driver. You can only use it to drive it to classic car rallies or the like.

Spending $65,000 on a car I could maybe drive four or five times a year? At most?

To hell with that.

Adding states is the easier option

But making Puerto Rico a state would mean accepting Spanish as an official language there and adding Washington DC would add a large “urban” population to the US and that would rankle a lot of “rural” folks.

There is a constitutional problem with admitting DC as a state because the 24th Amendment limits DC to 3 electoral votes. Also the DC admission amendment was sent to the states with a 7 year time expiration that let it go moot in 1985.

Eliminate the tax cut for the rich, and even with a Democratic Senate, the rest of my scenario is likely because there are Democrats determined to retain the filibuster.

The Democrats would have to go big and bold. Abolish the filibuster and grant statehood to at least D.C. and Puerto Rico. I’d be radical and also grant statehood to Virgin Islands, Guam, Saipan and the Marianas; Nv had only 20k residents when the GOP granted it statehood to help them retain control of the Senate.

today’s print NYT “NRA Chat wins convert in the oval office”

and trump said yesterday

the United States already has “very strong background checks” for gun purchasers and that officials need to be wary of the prospect of a “slippery slope” where “everything gets taken away.”

one tiny step. “stronger background checks”
and he goes right for the moronic inevitable immediate “everything gets taken away”
wow

Parkland students - yes, good intentions.

“The student activists who crashed the political arena after the mass shooting last year at their high school in Parkland, Fla., are throwing their weight behind a new and ambitious gun-control program that they hope will set the tone for the debate following the most recent mass shootings and headed into the 2020 elections,” the Washington Post reports. Axios has highlights of the proposal.

- national licensing and gun registry that would include in-person interviews and a 10-day wait before gun purchases are approved.
- Ban assault weapons and high-capacity magazines.
- Implement a mandatory gun buyback program.

contrast the three stories and i’m sorry NONE OF THIS WILL EVER HAPPEN

which is why i say give them the entire slippery slope because there is no arguing with this. take it away, then they got nothing.

focus on the only thing they cant deny or explain away: personal responsibility.
including when you sell, give, loan or otherwise transfer your weapon to someone else.
why is this so difficult?

background checks should be comprehensive, easy and voluntary. if you dont take reasonable steps to vet the receiver, whatever they do is on you (especially if they are on the not allowed to own list).

its your freedom, finances and future. be responsible, reasonable and act accordingly. or don’t, as you see fit.

A Copenhagen newspaper editorial

The brutal Danish reality after Trump’s absurd cancellation

US security policy interests in Greenland and thus the Arctic are legitimate. It is an area that is increasingly a minefield in the game between the United States, Russia and China in particular, and here the US has a very specific problem, if you can not even more than today include Greenland and its massive land area in its major political considerations.

This is the brutal reality that after the cancellation of President Donald Trump’s visit, Denmark is whipped to look.

But, of course, this understandable interest does not give the United States (or others for that matter) carte blanche to any behavior.

Trump’s postponement of the official state visit indefinitely is in itself a completely unheard of step, a diplomatic insult and deeply ominous to the state throughout transatlantic cooperation. Also under NATO auspices:

Imagine a US president canceling a state visit to another NATO country on the express grounds that that country has refused to divest part of its territory to the United States. It has not been seen before and it is a course of action that is unseen in the postwar period.

It is not just a random alliance that is now in crisis. This applies both to the issue of Greenland and to the whole: For decades, Denmark and the United States have had an extremely close cooperation on Greenland, where the United States has a military base at Thule. And Denmark has for many years been among America’s most loyal NATO allies, including in the war effort in Iraq, Afghanistan and elsewhere.

Denmark has no interest in cooling down that relationship. Nor has the United States - the situation in the Arctic - taken into account. Yet this is precisely what is likely to happen, especially because of President Trump’s absurd behavior. Sensible forces in both nations should now make every effort to prevent this episode from damaging our relationship. This also applies to the Danish government, whose deep commitment now is to act wisely and carefully.

When Donald Trump’s visit to Denmark was announced, the reaction from parts of the Danish public, including several politicians on the left, was quite astonishing: Instead of recognizing the importance that the President of Denmark’s most important ally would make official visits with all that brings with it opportunities politically, diplomatically and professionally, decaying more into pure childishness. From crazy social media posts about Trump not being welcome at all, to talking to Trump balloons and the like.

But even in these circles, it must now be judged that one was astray. Strengthening ties with the US administration is precisely of strategic importance, and an official state visit where Trump was invited by Denmark’s Queen Margrethe would be the perfect opportunity for this.

That it is the American president himself, the leader of the free world, who in this way figuratively peels the service of the banquet, must and must give deep brows and send people into overtime. In Copenhagen, Washington, but also with other US allies, who now have to ask themselves what to expect from their friend on the other side of the Atlantic?

But, you know, Jews shouldn’t feel singled out.

Trump CLEARLY believes that the only REAL Americans, who are completely American, are white Christians, so it makes perfect sense to him that, for example Judge Curiel, who was born in America, is Mexican because he’s not white. Jews are Israeli, because they’re not Christian. Ayanna Pressley is African because she’s not white.

Everyone who isn’t a White Christian is only conditionally American, to him, and for that matter to his followers.

Trump’s weirdness is getting exponentially more weird. And somehow it feels like it’s starting to accelerate. Where are we going to be by the end of the week? We’re halfway to fucking Crazyville now, and it’s only Wednesday.

We passed Crazyville on January 21, 2017. We’ve passed the event horizon of a black hole of derp, and there’s no way to escape it.

I was just thinking that.

Well, we’re getting out of Dodge today - by end of week I’ll be sitting in a biergarten in Vienna, watching the country unravel from a distance.

Potential upside - maybe he’ll decide to go on TV and tell the nation just how totally chosen by God he is, and they’ll finally just roll the rubber truck up to the Oval.

The filibuster has definitely been abused; instead of being a rare event, it is a common occurrence. But without the filibuster, what legislation would the GOP have been able to pass in the first 2 years of the Trump administration? The wall certainly would have been well under construction.

Just remember that come 2021 even with a Democratic Congress and President no legislation on any issue we care about will be enacted with the filibuster in place.

Christian fascists, theocrats, and fundamentalists who back Trump are supporting Israel not because they support Jews and their rights, but because we are the means to their End Times prophesies, where we’re disposable and that Israel is necessary component for Armageddon.

They back Trump because Trump too is the guy they think will bring about the End Times - that level of incompetence is stunning and meant to cause so much chaos that it will cause lasting damage.

Religious extremists of all stripes are dangerous.

It’s precisely because they kiss his ass, and why they kiss his ass. NYT, as well as so much of the political media, have fully internalized the ‘liberal media’ bullshit line that they bend over backwards and rend their clothes to sate conservative grievances. And the more they see conservatives attack them, the more they see it as not having done enough to finally satisfy their need for objectivity. It’s the Overton Window in action. It’s the same reason they have maximum freakouts anytime someone from the left criticizes them.

They all grew up with posters of Ferraris, Lambos and Ducatis on their walls.

It’s not that the cars are any good. It’s that they are EXPENSIVE. A Ferrari’s actual cost of manufacturing is about $75K. But it’s priced at $500K.

Insecure little man-babies buy expensive trinkets as a way to signify their value to the world. It’s why Trump slathers gold on everything and names his kids “Tiffany” and “Baron” - because he’s deeply insecure and looks to exterior possessions as a way to validate that he is worth anything.
