Speaking of database breaches such as MyHeritage, there was a larger one more recently, the second-largest in history, from an E-mail verification service used by banks, financiers, Yahoo, and others.

It was discovered on Feb 25 of this year.

Exposed data across 763 million records included email address, name, gender, IP address, phone number and other personal information, Diachenko reports.

Three days later:

(Updated) 2 Billion Unencrypted Records Leaked In Marketing Data Breach —What To Do Next (Forbes)

That’s two billion E-mail addresses.

You would be unsurprised to know the company that ran the verification service shut up shop and folks can’t be found only days after the initial breach was discovered.

I don’t do on-line banking, credit, or bill paying so that doesn’t affect me. My Yahoo address is only used for me to run my Yahoo group.

Firefox notes the specific info stolen was:

IP addresses, Phone numbers, Email addresses, Dates of birth
Additional information, including:
Employers, Genders, Geographic locations, Job titles, Names, Physical addresses

If you haven’t heard about this breach, it’s because corporations are not your friends. A bank doesn’t care who takes your money, whether it’s you or someone else. A credit card company can have you settle it in arbitration with their lawyers in Delaware, &c.

For this breach security people note you should immediately change passwords (especially on financial accounts), and be extra-careful for phishing schemes since personal information was also stolen.

My brother went off on a long-planned and well-deserved fishing trip in Colorado on Saturday. He is, at least according to the texts he’s sending me, having a great time.

While he’s gone, I’m staying at and working out of my mother’s house and keeping an eye on her. What that means in practice is doing the usual chores plus making sure she takes her pills. It also means that she sleeps all day long, wakes up at 8 pm to take her pills, and then is up most of the night, dropping off to sleep about 8 am in the morning.

I picked up and brought my entire home office here—two monitors, a docking station, keyboard, mouse, and laptop. I have a Cisco soft phone which is fine, but I completely hate the Bluetooth headset I was given. You have to hook it over an ear and it is not compatible with wearing glasses. My right ear hurts by the end of the day. Oh well, first world problems. I would like to get a headband headset to wear instead.

Now if I can just keep mom from yanking out the toilet handle until my brother comes home on Friday, life will be good.

The storm line seems to be moving east (though here the wind has been from the east for two days). It is also building southwest to the west of Cheyenne.

If it holds together, it’s going to be another rough night here.

Two more rotating supercells have formed (one north, one south) near the tornadic thunderstorm south of Torrington, Wyo.

All three are crossing US-85 at the same time, and are all moving towards Scott’s Bluff County, Nebraska.

Weather radio is now issuing severe thunderstorm warnings for Scott’s Bluff, Dawes, Banner, Box Butte, Morrill, Garden, Sioux (Nebr), Goshen, Laramie (Wyo), until 11 PM MDT.

The line extends from Chadron to Cheyenne, but does not extend over my town (yet). This storm line is moving east, so it will eventually come over my town.

They are warning that people or animals caught outside in the hail could be severely injured or killed.

The radar map looks like a giant thunderstorm two hundred miles in size.

Most of the storm complex has moved into Nebraska. More cells are growing along the front of it as it moves east.

Scottsbluff is getting trampled now. Cheyenne dodged a bullet. Alliance and Bridgeport are in the path (and we’re just beyond Bridgeport).

The radio hasn’t gone off in at least ten minutes, so yay?

Several years ago, I rolled over retirement plan assets from my previous job into IRA accounts at Morgan Stanley, that were held primarily in equity mutual funds. A few days before the 2016 election, I contacted my Morgan Stanley guy to ask him what he thought would happen if Trump won since I was concerned they would take a major hit, and his response was their experts predicted at least 10-15% correction. Of course, that didn’t happen and the Obama market continued on its merry way.

The economists who tell us what Brexit likely means or the ultimate effects of Trump’s ridiculous tariffs are all guessing. I certainly love Krugman — but again, it’s all speculation — we will have to wait and see if a recession awaits us, a collapse of the global economy, or if the US economy continues limping along, with low unemployment. Last night, a friend expressed her extreme displeasure with the MSNBC and CNN reports on signs of possible recession— that they are overstating the evidence and damaging their credibility in process.

Expert predictions of long term — or even short term - consequences are often not particularly reliable.

The weather radio just popped off again.

The previous severe thunderstorm warning area has been tripled in size. It now includes every town in my county other than mine. (We are the easternmost town, near the Garden County line.)

Warnings have been extended to include Interstate 80 from mile marker 0 to 59, and Kimball and Cheyenne Counties.

More of the storms indicated as hailstorms (squares) are being indicated as rotating thunderstorms (diamonds). The latter have the potential to produce tornadoes, but also dangerous hail.

Out west, you’re more likely to hear that Virginia is known for peanuts and Smithfield ham. Here in the east, it’s almost always gonna be blue crab, though some would swear by the oysters as well.

In good news, I won $12 in the lotto. That paid for my gas.

My car is due for service in ten days (my speedometer won’t let me forget that), so we’re planning a trip to Denver for it’s regular annual/10,000 mile service. (Since we haven’t driven it 10,000 miles this year, it’s an annual service. Since most of our driving is on unpaved roads and such, even if we don’t drive it much it still needs things like filters changed. Because of the dust, the interior air conditioner filter, which is normally changed every 50,000 miles, is changed every 10,000 miles for us.)

It actually rather surprised me the first time I heard people talking about Virginia peanuts like it was some sort of delicacy. I’ve lived most of my life over in Hampton Roads, so when people talk food it’s usually local seafood of some variety. But the first time I took a road trip to see family back in Kentucky, it seemed like every rest stop west of Richmond had cans of peanuts proudly identifying themselves as coming from Virginia.

I think I just arrived in VA Beach at the wrong time in my life: Too old to have had Virginia history drilled into my head since infancy, too young to appreciate it when I’d go on those school trips that happened in middle and high school. Hell, I didn’t even make it to Colonial Williamsburg until this past May and I’ve lived in VB since ‘95.

We’re the peanuts from Wakefield?

Every school or church field trip to Richmond or Washington in the seventies and eighties, the chartered bus had to stop off for a meal at this diner/store/souvenir shop in Wakefield chock full of locally grown peanuts.

I even went to the trouble of finding out the historical context of Witchduck Road in Virginia Beach and Quarantine Road in Norfolk. (I had a lot of free time.)

When I was growing up, traffic had a hard time getting through the Downtown, Midtown, and Hampton Roads tunnels. Of course, that was when the Downtown and Midtown tunnels were single tubes.

And I left college just in time for the bottom to fall out of the job market, so I just now reached a point where I can afford to even consider paying the entry fees at places like Colonial Williamsburg.

Regarding Brexit and its potential economic impact, yes it is speculation at this stage. That having been said, a “no-deal Brexit”, a scenario where the UK crashes out of the EU without a withdrawal agreement having been legislated, would almost certainly cause serious problems for the British economy.

But exactly just how serious those problems would be really is anyone’s guess - simply because this is all so unprecedented and there’s no past examples we can look to in order to come up with a prediction model.

Then I was a college student for a few years out of high school so I barely had time between that and work to do much. And I left college just in time for the bottom to fall out of the job market, so I just now reached a point where I can afford to even consider paying the entry fees at places like Colonial Williamsburg.

We didn’t get to go to Colonial Williamsburg and Yorktown until a ninth grade field trip. Jamestown was a reliable third and fourth grade destination, and we ran into Governor Godwin on a fifth grade field trip to Richmond.

When I was first stationed at NAS Oceana, my first shop had a person who grew up in Virginia Beach stationed there. (He always complained about “Join the Navy! See the world! I was really looking for something beyond First Colonial Road.”)

I hooked up with him to find out what would be good things to tour in Virginia while I was stationed there.

During that time, I also got to go to the Vietnam Veterans Memorial in Washington (the only time I’ve been), for the obvious reason of finding my father’s name on The Wall.

That place in the middle of Washington is eerily quiet. Despite a major avenue near it, it seems no noise penetrates the area around the monument (or maybe I was just so lost in thought I didn’t hear it).

Thunderstorm warning for Scott’s Bluff County has been dropped, along with most of Banner.

Flood warnings are up for Scottsbluff.

Scott’s Bluff County is being obliterated by lightning. On the lighting map it looks like every acre’s been hit or is being hit.

The storm front has moved into my county. Supercells are moving in all sorts of crazy directions. Bayard is being smote without pity right now, and Bridgeport is surrounded by thunderstorms.

Think I went to Jamestown in sixth or seventh grade, while the Colonial Williamsburg trip here seemed to be more of a trip for elementary students. Of course, I’ve never been afraid to admit that my long-term memory has more holes than a block of swiss. I did go on a trip to the courthouse in high school during my US/VA Gov class. The whole of what the state considers “Virginia Beach” is really a conglomeration of small unincorporated towns that came together and decided to declare themselves a “city” for the purposes of avoiding annexation by neighboring “cities.” Hell, even today, most of what is considered part of the “city” is swamps and farms, because we dare not let Norfolk lay claim to any of it.

The Navy raised holy hell about Muhammad Ali wanting to build a massive hotel on the east side of the base in the resort district. They came to agreement that Ali would build the hotel only 1/3 the original planned height.

Oceana’s days are numbered if Va Beach continues to allow development around the air station. I don’t think the Navy is going to want to move out to Fentress in the Dismal Swamp (plus NALF Fentress would require a whole lot of upgrades to equal NAS Oceana).

Trump has this annoying habit of wanting to talk directly to leaders of other countries. That might work for a company, but that’s not how nations run. He probably forgot he has an ambassador there, and Pompeo is too much of a lick-spittle to tell him (even though the ambassador works for him).

I just note that mainline Protestants and white Catholics also broke for Trump, not just evangelical Christians.

If Trump laid down a real insult on Christian voters, he would drive away a whole bunch of the Christian vote. The fundies would stay with him because they want power, but they are not enough of the electorate without the other Christian faiths which also broke for him.

Interestingly, Mormons were the only Christian faith which took a big swing toward Democrats in the 2016 election (they still went for Trump but only by a slim margin). It would seem they can better identify an amoral asshole than any other Christian faith.

The only Christian groups which went for Hillary Clinton over Trump were African-American evangelicals and Hispanic Catholics.

According to Pew, every religious denomination broke more for Trump than they did for Romney, except the aforementioned groups.

The only people Democrats increased their share was with Jews, other faiths, and atheists. That’s not enough to overcome all Christian faith groups breaking for Trump over Clinton. What put her over the top on popular votes were the minority (and no) faith groups.

I’ve said before that Trump’s entire mindset is that of a CEO of his own private company, the king of his own private fiefdom, and incidents like these really show that. He’s a reputation for storming away from the table when it looks like the other side isn’t going to give in to his demands or (conversely) isn’t taking him seriously. And it has worked numerous times in the past, because the worry that he might walk away totally has scared others into giving into his demands. What he totally fails to realize is that he’s not offering to buy land or property from others for the purpose of building one of gaudy towers, he’s openly suggesting buying up an entire island and the people upon it. And that shit is simply not done, certainly not since the Age of Imperialism came to crashing end after WWII.

A spot in the Lynnhaven River, off what is today known as Witchduck Point, was chosen, and Grace Sherwood was bound and thrown from a boat. She managed to untie herself and rise to the surface, proving to those present that she was a witch. As punishment for her crime, Grace Sherwood spent seven years in jail. The gun shop owner in my town has Parkinson’s Disease, and it’s been getting steadily worse.

He’s decided he can no longer run his shop. As such, he has now made his shop’s hours “appointment only” as of a couple days ago, and is selling all his inventory of rifles, ammunition, bows, and other inventory at clearance prices.

His family set up a Facebook page for his shop (he doesn’t do computers) with details if anyone is interested. (Mr. Mitchell has a federal firearms license and can legally ship to other places.)

Seeing Mr. Mitchell’s decline it seems he doesn’t have much longer to live. He ran against me to unseat me from the village board in 2014 and lost by four votes to me. (He’d previously served on the board but was defeated in the 2012 election.) Later, when we had a vacancy on the board and needed to fill it, I suggested he fill the seat, as he’d run for a seat when others did not. He was appointed to that seat and served until the 2016 election. He and I are about as far apart on politics as you can be, but he is a decent guy who cares about the town and had long experience on the board before I got here.

But any reader of the book can tell you that It works best as one big epic story. Thankfully, it sounds like It and It: Chapter Two director Andy Muschietti agrees - and he’s cutting together an It supercut containing both films. Yeah, that’s the thing. I honestly don’t see how they can do a Holland Spidey film removed from the MCU in any capacity. His version of Spidey was completely integrated into the MCU’s events.

While the AARP is quite right about seniors voting in relatively large numbers, getting them to pull the lever/mark the box for a (D) is (IMO) going to be an uphill climb. Normally, the reason an action taken by a department takes a couple of years to overturn by the next administration is that they are legally required to investigate the consequences. The BLS is always revising data to get the most comprehensive and accurate picture. It also trails the immediate job numbers they post (u3-u6, etc.) and the ADP payroll numbers.

Seems to me, and I confess to not being an expert in such matters, that the Trump administration is cooking the books. That’s one hell of a revision.

And that really shouldn’t come as surprise to anyone. Trump’s entire business model is based on cooking the books. He’s a fucking crook, a petty chisler - and he has been his entire life.

No, I’m confident that the public servants at the BLS are doing their jobs correctly; if the books were being cooked, we wouldn’t have found out about the downward revision. Revisions are what happens when the data starts catching up to a changing economy; and this is an ominous sign.

Root tweeted in the aftermath of the 2017 Las Vegas shooting: “This is a real thing. Clearly Coordinated Muslim Terror attack. PRAY for our Vegas police. PRAY for victims. VERY bad. Awful.”[27] It was later confirmed that the shooter was 64-year-old Mesquite, Nevada, resident Stephen Paddock.[28] Root then defended his original claim by tweeting: “Terrible day. Liberal fools criticizing me 4 reporting what I hear DIRECT from police & credible news sources. I report it as I hear it.”[29]

Root argued that Special Counsel Robert Mueller’s investigation into Russian interference in the 2016 election is motivated by “penis envy”, because “Mueller’s is smaller than Trump’s.”[5]

I have a couple of students who were initially supportive of Trump, or at least willing to give him a chance at the outset.

They’ve now turned against him, regarding his presidency as a horrific blunder. One of them asked me a couple of months back, “Has Trump always been this incompetent?” His English is good enough that he can read newspaper articles with minimal difficulty, so I pointed him in the direction of articles that gave the lowdown on Trump’s checkered past.

As he pointed out afterwards, sadly, that information really isn’t reported in the mainstream Czech media.

If the Democrats win the Presidency and both Houses, your vision will not happen. No tax cut for the wealthy — more likely a repeal of most of the tax scam, with perhaps an expansion of cuts that help those of lower income. The Democratic Senate will seek retribution. And, with luck, there will be an investigation into Kavanaugh’s finances that may force his resignation. The real problem arises if the GOP retains the Senate in 2020; the President then will be stymied in both legislation and judicial appointments. And who knows what a Republican Senate will do regarding Cabinet appointments.

The Constitutional construction of the Senate and the Electoral College is so flawed that our nation may not survive.

No need for the sombrero aluminio : it’s more likely the “Greenland” nonsense is simply the Trump Administration going about international diplomacy in its usual manner: clumsily, incompetently and generally counterproductive. I guessing somebody in the Admin or the Government (?military?) has finally figured out that global warming (which of course, the Administration still won’t officially admit exists) is going to have effects on the Arctic Ocean, and there are going to be security, safety and navigation issues if/when the Northwest Passage becomes a regular seasonal thing. A normal Admin would try to deal with potential maritime problems via, say, existing diplomatic organizations (there is, I think, an Arctic Council(?) of the five nations (US, Canada, Russia, Denmark/Greenland and (?) Norway) which border the region: but since US FP is in the hands of morons like Trump and Pompeo, what we get is sensationalist BS like “let’s buy Greenland” instead.

Trust me, I agree. But then, in sports car fantasy mode for me it’s either a Miata (practical and good supercharger kits are available) or (post loto :) a Lotus Evora 400, the most recent one that can be imported to the US due to our safety laws :D The ‘vette hasn’t been worth anything since, depending on my mood, the 63 split window or the very last sting ray.

They’ve now turned against him, regarding his presidency as a horrific blunder. One of them asked me a couple of months back, “Has Trump always been this incompetent?” His English is good enough that he can read newspaper articles with minimal difficulty, so I pointed him in the direction of articles that gave the lowdown on Trump’s checkered past.

As he pointed out afterwards, sadly, that information really isn’t reported in the mainstream Czech media.

Its not really reported in mainstream US media either.

Here in Czech Republic, it’s utterly pointless to have anything like that. The law here designates those cars as veteráni (classic cars) and that designation means you can’t use it as a daily driver. You can only use it to drive it to classic car rallies or the like.

Spending $65,000 on a car I could maybe drive four or five times a year? At most?

To hell with that.

There is a constitutional problem with admitting DC as a state because the 24th Amendment limits DC to 3 electoral votes. Also the DC admission amendment was sent to the states with a 7 year time expiration that let it go moot in 1985.

No tax cut for the wealthy — more likely a repeal of most of the tax scam, with perhaps an expansion of cuts that help those of lower income. The Democratic Senate will seek retribution. And, with luck, there will be an investigation into Kavanaugh’s finances that may force his resignation. The real problem arises if the GOP retains the Senate in 2020; the President then will be stymied in both legislation and judicial appointments. And who knows what a Republican Senate will do regarding Cabinet appointments.

The Constitutional construction of the Senate and the Electoral College is so flawed that our nation may not survive.

The brutal Danish reality after Trump’s absurd cancellation

US security policy interests in Greenland and thus the Arctic are legitimate. It is an area that is increasingly a minefield in the game between the United States, Russia and China in particular, and here the US has a very specific problem, if you can not even more than today include Greenland and its massive land area in its major political considerations.

This is the brutal reality that after the cancellation of President Donald Trump’s visit, Denmark is whipped to look.

But, of course, this understandable interest does not give the United States (or others for that matter) carte blanche to any behavior.

Trump’s postponement of the official state visit indefinitely is in itself a completely unheard of step, a diplomatic insult and deeply ominous to the state throughout transatlantic cooperation. Also under NATO auspices:

Imagine a US president canceling a state visit to another NATO country on the express grounds that that country has refused to divest part of its territory to the United States. It has not been seen before and it is a course of action that is unseen in the postwar period.

It is not just a random alliance that is now in crisis. This applies both to the issue of Greenland and to the whole: For decades, Denmark and the United States have had an extremely close cooperation on Greenland, where the United States has a military base at Thule. And Denmark has for many years been among America’s most loyal NATO allies, including in the war effort in Iraq, Afghanistan and elsewhere.

Denmark has no interest in cooling down that relationship. Nor has the United States - the situation in the Arctic - taken into account. Yet this is precisely what is likely to happen, especially because of President Trump’s absurd behavior. Sensible forces in both nations should now make every effort to prevent this episode from damaging our relationship. This also applies to the Danish government, whose deep commitment now is to act wisely and carefully.

When Donald Trump’s visit to Denmark was announced, the reaction from parts of the Danish public, including several politicians on the left, was quite astonishing: Instead of recognizing the importance that the President of Denmark’s most important ally would make official visits with all that brings with it opportunities politically, diplomatically and professionally, decaying more into pure childishness. From crazy social media posts about Trump not being welcome at all, to talking to Trump balloons and the like.

But even in these circles, it must now be judged that one was astray. Strengthening ties with the US administration is precisely of strategic importance, and an official state visit where Trump was invited by Denmark’s Queen Margrethe would be the perfect opportunity for this.

That it is the American president himself, the leader of the free world, who in this way figuratively peels the service of the banquet, must and must give deep brows and send people into overtime. In Copenhagen, Washington, but also with other US allies, who now have to ask themselves what to expect from their friend on the other side of the Atlantic?

Almost like the Maserati that passed through here last summer. Seen a couple of Ferrari’s and there are a lot of Porsche’s around but that remains the only one of those.

Piffle. I’ll still take a nice Jag or Lotus over any of them any day. One of our guests a week or so ago had a Jaguar XE that was seriously sweet. The new F type ragtop is a beauty as well and nowhere near as stupidly priced.
