The text of an email I got from Medicare this morning. The check is in the mail.

You’ve likely heard about the Coronavirus (officially called “2019-Novel Coronavirus” or “COVID-19”) in the news. While there isn’t a vaccine yet and the immediate health risk remains low, Medicare is still here to help.

Your Medicare Part B (Medical Insurance) covers a test to see if you have Coronavirus. This test is covered when your doctor or a health care provider orders it, if you get the test on or after February 4, 2020. You usually pay nothing for Medicare-covered clinical diagnostic laboratory tests.

To prevent the spread of this illness or other illnesses, including the flu:

Wash your hands often with soap and water,
Cover your mouth and nose when you cough or sneeze,
Stay home when you’re sick, and
See your doctor if you think you’re ill.
Visit The Centers for Disease Control website for information on the Coronavirus.

Learn More
Sincerely,

The Medicare Team

Note: Your provider will need to wait until after April 1, 2020 to submit a claim to Medicare for this test.

T-minus 3 weeks until I am meant to fly to Europe.

The good news is that I can cancel everything and be out less than $500. If my flights within Europe get cancelled, it would drop to near zero.

The bad news is that I have health challenges in general, and I am planning to get a good bit off the beaten path. The idea of being sick away from home sucks in general, in this case it could be a real nightmare.

On the other hand, it seems very clear my chances of getting tested in Bosnia, Montenegro or Serbia might actually be better than here in the US! They certainly won’t be any worse.

Glad I don’t have to make a decision for at least 2 weeks.

There are a lot of ways the immune system can get messed up by an infection, so having AIDS in the headline here strikes me as nearly pure fear-mongering.

But that’s the quote from the Chinese doctors themselves and therefore may reflect a concern based on their experience. My uneducated perspective, based on absolutely no medical training or classes.

It may be fearmongering, but the fact that they’re seeing cases that require lung transplants as a life-saving measure due to the scarring in the lungs is scary enough. It means that there are going to be survivors of the initial infection who have life-long consequences.

I have to disagree. They’re talking about this disease being a combination of SARS attacking the lungs and AIDS attacking the immune system.

Seems accurate to me.

Covid-19 is no joke, that’s for sure. But what’s most scary about AIDS/HIV is that it can (and did) spread undetected for a very long time because the resulting destruction of the immune system is so slow and insidious.

That’s pretty much the logical opposite of a severe Covid-19 case.

Now if it turns out that covid-19 can become a stealthy long term immune-system destroyer even in cases with apparently mild symptoms, then a comparison with AIDS will make sense (and god help us all in that situation).

I’m very disappointed in Robert Reich, who has gone full in as a Bernie Bro, magnifying every mistake Biden made in his legislative career while overlooking flaws in Bernie’s record. Yes — he’s not doing the snake emojis whatever — but a more polite way to persuade others that Bernie is the man.

Jeez, that statement has more conditionals than a BOGO coupon in the local pennysaver: “Nearly 17 persons”, testing CAN be done”, “concern”, appear” - I hope, for his sake, that “ZERO confirmed cases” is correct: besides being a good sign and positive news, it’s the only factual statement in the release.

I realized that the end game for fanatics is ultimate power. Things like a stable and empowering government, experts, artists, any entity or group that protects or empowers folks which they respect or look up to, that is competition. It screws up their grift. They rely on idiots dependent upon them to prosper.

These people are so sociopathic that they will continue spouting disinformation and manipulating hysteria even though it will kill many, as long as it improves their power with the rest that are left.

SXSW is still on. Between the Tech, Film, and Music portions, well over 60,000 people will traipse the AUS by the time it’s over. No cases yet in the People’s Republic of Travis County, but with a 14-day incubation period, that means squat.

New I-mac I’m using, now. My 2010 dinosaur finally died. No longer supported by Apple, can’t get a new graphics card. Smaller screen on the new rig (21.5 vs 27”), I never really needed the 27”.

Got a good deal at Best Buy, +/- $1000 w/ tax. Good to be back!

She Who Must Be Obeyed and I had already bought tickets for the AUS->Gatwick leg of our annual trip to the Edinburgh International Harp Festival but were holding off on the internal London -> EDI legs. Good thing! The Festival was cancelled today. We’ll stick to Bedfordshire with a couple of day trip for a couple of weeks. SWMBO is sad, but it wasn’t EIHF that made the decision but the boarding school that hosts it and houses attendees. Liability issues.

However, Everclear is bottled at 120, 151, 189, and 190 U.S. proof
(60%, 75.5%, 94.5% and 95% alcohol).

But a nice cocktail with Titos is an excellent evening reward for disinfecting the place,

Hey folks, bleach is cheaper and more effective than anything but the strongest alcohol. Lasting effects on a surface. Stinks tho.

It’s absolutely hell on the skin.

It does, because it evaporates and thus loses strength. No worries, though. Get a covered vessel, enamel or glass is best (Don’t! use a cast iron dutch oven. It’ll scour the cure right off of it!) mix it up and keep it outside, covered.

You might also want to get a bottle of high-glycerine hand cream like Vaseline Intensive Care, or you’ll age hands twenty years in about a month.

One fire away, my friend, one fire away. We have friends in Oakland Hills, and they flat left the State to shelter in their apt. on Vancouver Island until the smoke dissipated.

When I was in 8th grade, I got a case of athlete’s foot. My dad told me that when he was in the navy, they used a little bit of bleach in a tub of water to cure it. I went and got the bleach and, unsupervised, went to soak my feet.

I ended up bedridden for a week, and the family doctor told me to never take my dad’s medical advice ever again.

Edit: and of course the thread is now dead.

Right, not for skin. just all those surfaces we touch. Knobs, counters etc.

So.
Ford V Ferrari was a great film last year. It told, more accurately than usual for Hollywood, the story of Ford wanting to win at Le Mans.

If you liked the movie, here’s a really neat tidbit more.

Le Mans 1965 is the craziest race you haven’t heard about

People from all over the place going to the epicenter and going home again.

Perfect.

SXSW isn’t cancelling either.

My brother called me to let me know he was not going to the Nascar race on Saturday here in Phoenix. He wasn’t so much worried about the attendees—it’s all the people who work at the races that have been moving around since the start of race season a month ago. And last weekend they were in California. He’s sorry to lose the money, but he would rather be safe than sorry.
