Copper prices dropped off a cliff at the end of January. It’s been slowly trending downward since. (High of $2.84 on January 22, currently $2.50, off 0.1% today.)
Copper is an important benchmark due to all its industrial and electrical uses. The demand for copper falling indicates a broad slowdown in manufacturing.

He’s frantically flailing. If the economy tanks between now and November, his presidency is finished - and the only thing protecting him from the slammer is the Oval Office and he damn well knows it.
Also, he will be remembered as a failed President and maybe, for Trump, that’s worse. Being remembered as a schmuck.
All gains in the market from the last fifteen months have been wiped out in six days.

Assistance from the Montgomery County Police Department was requested due to information gathered during the investigation that the two wanted individuals were in Montgomery County, MD working.
Thomas Hickman and Katherine Entsminger are wanted on warrants stemming from a case in 2017, where it is alleged that the two rustled horses from a Sublette County Business.
They are awaiting an extradition hearing. They are charged with horse rustling and theft.

One thing I heard this morning was that it is very likely that people who test positive for COVID-19 after they have recovered from it are testing positive for the virus’s RNA, not live virus as most tests don’t test for the live virus. That inspires a great “zombie apocalypse” scenario for this would-be screenwriter.
A cruise ship is overwhelmed by the zombie virus, and it’s headed towards a major port. Of course, being as everyone on the ship, including the crew, is now the undead, no one can raise communications. After two attempts to ferry over a pilot to safely steer the ship end in deadly failure, the Navy decides to torpedo the ship to sink it to prevent it from reaching land and unleashing its now zombified passengers on the populace.
The Navy successfully sinks the ship….only to realize a couple of hours later that it was a futile gesture, as the undead passengers make their way out of the sunken ship and come ashore to feast on the hapless locals.

I’m also going to spout out loud on FB about ‘innoculation’ against disinformation, the spread of it, etc. Bad information can kill, be very careful about what you forward without checking first.

Couldn’t even do it if he wanted to. I guess if the EC’s existence has a saving grace, it’s that it is there is 50 state elections along with DC rather than a national election that could be headed by an agency or commission filled with Trump appointed cronies in charge. That said, it’s only going to get more desperate if the economy goes downhill. Trump always has had a tough road to re-election but the economy as a playing card was one he looked to have. Just wait til more people from CPAC report symptoms or are identify as coming in contact with the person who did. And those people who are asymptomatic aren’t tested because they think they’re okay but instead are carriers - spreading it to others. That’s the scenario now - because we don’t have enough testing.
Now expand that out to baseball season. We’re still in spring training, but just a few weeks from now the season starts, and you get 40-60k people rubbing shoulders and eating and drinking and coming into contact with each other.
There’s a reason that SXSW cancelled due to the disease. The risk of spreading is high. But will the league take action, or will Trump pressure them to act as though everything is normal? I’m betting Trump is twisting arms to make it appear everything is normal, when it is anything but.

The infected attendee has not been named, but it appears the man had access to many of the conference’s highest-profile guests. Matt Schlapp, head of the American Conservative Union, has said he shook hands with him.
Schlapp, as the event’s face, shook hands with hundreds of other people, including Trump. And Cruz, Gosar, and Collins were all in contact with the infected individual as well — Gosar said in his statement he shook hands with the man “several times,” while Collins said he was in a photo with him.
Sounds like he (and according to the article, it’s a man) was some high-profile type. Maybe one of the conference organizers?

I just called Kaiser to set an appt for a very minor cough I’ve had for months. Like, a few times a day teeny bit of phlegm. Almost enough to ignore. But I figure might as well get it checked now in case it’s any stressor to immunity. And, I won’t be able to get it checked out for several months while they are slammed. I haven’t been sick for years but caught a bug in early Jan, seemed like a good cold.

Well, since this is still the REAGAN-designed AF1, it DOES have aerial refueling to allow them to stay out of contact with anyone until the quarantine expires. OTOH, it’s literally *AF1*, not just a VC-25, so the odds that 45 gets out w/o a med emergency would be slim. 🤔

True this (Jay puts on the jaunty homburg that is Technical Market Guy Hat): we note today’s drop is the second-highest %-wise on that list: and that only four of the top-20 all-time-day-loss figures are from before the last couple of years: when the market index has been in the 22-29M range: and just on the size of the index, one would expect bigger swings than from a smaller “base”. That said, a drop of 7.79% in a single day’s trading is definitely not good news. Especially as, if it seems, this is NOT just a “trading correction”, but a harbinger of a poorly-performing economy to come. (Or at least the expectations of it: often the same to the equity markets)

By the way, if you value your sanity, don’t check out the usual suspects about how they’re responding to today’s crash. Just posted this over on Adam Silverman’s excellent It’s The End of the World As We Know It thread on Balloon Juice:
Here’s something of concern to me that I haven’t yet seen addressed: the impact on the 2020 US Census, scheduled for next month. I worked as a Census Enumerator in the fall, confirming mapping and demographic data. This is the first time the Census Bureau is attempting to get the census mostly completed online. However, a huge temporary workforce of Enumerators are currently being hired to work for 6-8 weeks going door-to-door, to every single residence in the entire country where the residents have not completed the census online. Are we really about to send 100,000 temporary workers physically to every neighborhood in America during April and May? In the middle of a likely pandemic with quarantines? Will the census be delayed? That’ll be yet another huge economic hit (I like many am counting on the work as a backstop) and also have enormous political ramifications.
Not the most encouraging week for job searching, I gotta tell ya.

I’m still stuck on who to vote for in our May primary. Perhaps the next two months will clear that up.
I don’t really want to see a brokered convention, so if it’s close, Joe Biden becomes a no-brainer.
If Biden is running away with it by May, then Elizabeth Warren might be my choice … adding pledged delegates to her total gives her more power at the convention.

The Department of Veterans Affairs has announced it will soon suspend new veteran enrollments at five colleges that engaged in illegal practices, unless they come into compliance with the law.
“After careful review and consideration of findings provided by the Federal Trade Commission and State Attorneys General Offices, [we have] concluded there is sufficient evidence to support a finding that these schools have utilized advertising, sales, or enrollment practices that are erroneous, deceptive, or misleading either by actual statement, omission, or intimation against GI Bill beneficiaries, in violation of the law,” the VA said in a news release.
In other words, they were ripping off veterans and the government.

Yeah, a nice notion, but we’re dealing with Bernie Sanders (and his bro-bot cultists) - he’s way more likely to deal with a defeat/sweep by simply bitching bitterly about “the establishment” and “corporatists” and “rigged games” and carrying on his campaign into even MORE losing contests - all the while boosting his ego (and those of his “base”) by assuring them of how Overridingly Righteous they all are, and vowing to Carry On The Revolution [from the safety of his Senate seat]….
And “endorsing Biden”? You mean like he “endorsed” Hillary in 2016? Support which IIRC scarcely rose even to level of “lackluster”???

Although he’s gotten a lot of younger people into politics, I have no problem saying this about Bernie, he’s the worst thing that’s happened to the political left in a long time. I really mean that. And it’s because his isn’t a campaign of positivity which drew so many towards Obama, it’s about resentment. And honestly I’m tired of hearing about how his is the only true grassroots campaign when he relies on celebrity names to distract from the fact that your average American really doesn’t want him.

JFC, all of Italy is now in quarantine.
Owing to Coronavirus, the government has extended restrictions to all of Italy. Prime Minister Giuseppe Conte has updated the framework of government measures to contain the coronavirus emergency: “Italy will be in a protected area: there will no longer be single zones, but all movements, they will be possible only out of necessity, for work or for health reasons. And, then, a ban on aggregation. They are more stringent rules to protect the health of all citizens”, says the premier who adds that these rules will be contained in a new decree which will be published in the Official Journal tonight and the rules will come into force tomorrow morning. Giuseppe Conte then said he had informed the President of the Republic Sergio Mattarella of the new rules .

re: #314 #thegreatpoolpondconversion (dangerman)
“Roughly one in five Republican voters in Maine’s largest towns left President Trump’s oval blank or wrote in another name during Tuesday’s presidential primary,” the Portland Press Herald reports.
add to that
- A new Quinnipiac poll shows Joe Biden crushing Bernie Sanders among Democrats nationally in the race for the presidential nomination, 54% to 35%.
AND
- In a general election match up, Biden leads President Trump by double-digits, 52% to 41%.
oh and
- Both Biden and Sanders beat Trump on the question of who would do a better job handling a crisis. Biden beats Trump 56 - 40 percent on this question, while Sanders tops Trump 50 - 44 percent.
“Perhaps most troubling for the Trump camp in these numbers is the comparative assessment of which candidate can handle a crisis: it is Biden hands down. Couple that with an approval rating frozen in the low forties and comparatively terrible numbers on leadership, honesty, and empathy for fellow Americans, and team Trump has a formidable fight ahead,” Malloy added.

Watching YouTube, I’ve had a bunch of adverts from Missouri (because my ISP is there) pushing why it’s so important for people to fill out the form, whether on-line, the paper form, or enumerators.
Speaking of enumerators, there’s no guarantee someone coming to my house isn’t bringing the virus with them.

Quite a few people I follow on Twitter for reasons that have nothing to do with politics are turning out to be hardcore Bernie or Bust-ers. Lemme just say: these fuggin guys, ya know wat I mean??
To them, everything that isn’t Bernie! is part of the international communist elite conspiracy to sap and impurify all of our precious bodily fluids. About half of them apparently have no idea how the US government actually works, i.e. no clue about the importance of the judiciary, why the House & Senate matter, etc. Of course, many others do know and are quite well informed. But in any case they’re really tiresome. They seem impossible to reach. They want many things that I more or less also want, but they want them right the fuck now and refuse to consider that what they want doesn’t necessarily map onto hard cold reality.
A side effect is that, while it’s not necessarily Sanders’ fault, his most hardcore followers are really souring me on Sanders himself. If they’re doing that for me, a mostly-liberal who wanted to vote for Elizabeth Warren, I can only imagine the damage to Bernie’s campaign they’re doing in the eyes of people who are sick of Trump but significantly to my right politically. You know, the ones we need to vote D.

I understand what Jollett is saying, but that needs to have a HUGE caveat that Italy had 600 known cases 11 days ago. Testing on this has lagged most everywhere, mostly because lots of people had mild cases. Now, most sane countries are testing just about everyone so we have better data to work with—I think calling it “exponential” growth is somewhat premature.

However, has you noted, it is uncertain as to when the first victim was infected in Italy, and how many people truly were infected a couple of weeks ago.

Wow, 0.02% of the nation.
NBA, NHL, MLB, MLS are closing their locker rooms to media members. Here is the joint statement tonight
Now we come up on March Madness (68 teams), which will be played Tournament locations.
On top of that MLB will be opening its season up shortly, and the NBA and NHL will have their playoffs starting in a few weeks.
AND you have proms and graduations from grade school to University right around the corner.
My sons have asked my daughter to delay her trip to Denver to visit, and my one sons company has lost about 40% due to uncertainties in the future. My daughter is scheduled to begin working in 4 or 5 weeks and she’s not sure they will bring her on board because of the uncertainty of it all.
Because of fucking emails and hate and fear and loathing and willful ignorance people will suffer and some will die. And Trump and the GOP are still trying to kill the ACA and leave millions with no coverage.
Deplorable was much too kind a word.
This is jaw-dropping. The Trump administration is actively sabotaging efforts to prevent the spread of coronavirus in immigration courts. https://t.co/zvlAYylmal

I don’t get it. All the people I saw arrested for rustling in films were hung on the spot. What is this “extradition” namby-pambyism?
Posse preparing to hang two rustlers, sheriff asks them “Wanna tell us your names so we can tell the folks back home?”

One thing I heard this morning was that it is very likely that people who test positive for COVID-19 after they have recovered from it are testing positive for the virus’s RNA, not live virus as most tests don’t test for the live virus. It was likened to DNA at a crime scene, it doesn’t mean the person who left it is still there.
Here, for example is the Institut Pasteur test:

Cases are going up, in part because the state is testing more rigorously, but I fear we’re on pace to follow the Italy example - and we are not going to see the kinds of closures they’re doing there (Italy just enacted a nationwide closure through April to try and contain the spread).

South Korean worker linked to US military in Daegu tests positive for coronavirus, lies to get on base (Goes to Stars & Stripes)
SEOUL, South Korea — A South Korean construction worker who tested positive for the new coronavirus lied about his health to gain access to the U.S. military base where he worked in Daegu, the garrison commander said Monday.
The man, who was a contracted construction worker on Camp Walker, was the eighth confirmed case linked to U.S. Forces Korea, the command said in a press release.
He “is currently in isolation at his off-base residence” as directed by the Korea Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, it said.

The city of Rockwall, in John Ratcliffe’s district, put this up on next door:
There have been numerous reports in the media about novel coronavirus, COVID-19, including news that Texas residents are currently being monitored in various parts of the state. While there has been one resident of Frisco identified and monitored as “presumptive positive” for COVID-19, health officials there say the immediate risk of transmission remains low. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recommends taking everyday preventive steps to limit exposure and reduce the risk of transmission:
• Avoid close contact with people who are sick.
• Avoid touching your eyes, nose, and mouth.
• Stay home when you are sick.
• Cover your cough or sneeze with a tissue, then throw the tissue in the trash.
• Clean and disinfect frequently touched objects and surfaces using a regular household cleaning spray or wipe.
• Follow CDC’s recommendations for using a facemask.
• Wash your hands often with soap and water for at least 20 seconds, especially after going to the bathroom; before eating; and after blowing your nose, coughing, or sneezing.
• If soap and water are not readily available, use an alcohol-based hand sanitizer with at least 60% alcohol. Always wash hands with soap and water if hands are visibly dirty.
• Consult CDC’s travel website for any travel advisories and steps to protect yourself if you plan to travel outside of the US.According to the CDC, reported COVID-19 illnesses have ranged from mild to severe symptoms, including fever, cough and/or shortness of breath, which may appear between 2-14 days after exposure. There is currently no vaccine to prevent COVID-19, and the best way to prevent illness is to avoid being exposed. For more information on COVID 19, please refer to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention: cdc.gov.
Within the last few weeks, the Rockwall Police Department and the Rockwall Fire Department have enacted precautions for residents and first responders to help mitigate the potential spread of COVID-19. First responders have personal protective equipment (PPE) available, and have established response protocols for the use of that PPE when appropriate. In addition, the departments have implemented screening questions for callers to 9-1-1 to identify individuals who may be experiencing symptoms consistent with the virus. The police and fire personnel have attended briefings by Rockwall County Office of Emergency Management and the Texas Division of Emergency Management, and will receive the latest information available upon its release by these agencies.
