The Tiny Desk is working from home for the foreseeable future. Introducing NPR Music’s Tiny Desk (home) concerts, bringing you performances from across the country and the world. It’s the same spirit — stripped-down sets, an intimate setting — just a different space.

April 16, 2020 | Bob Boilen — While many artists have postponed the release of their new music in the face of the COVID-19 pandemic, Laura Marling rushed to change the release date of her album from late summer to April. On this Tiny Desk (home) concert, we find her in her living room, with an intimate performance of songs from her just-released record Songs For Our Daughter. The album is an homage to a future generation of women and to Maya Angelou’s Letter to My Daughter, a collection of essays addressed to a fictional daughter. The warm, home setting makes room for Laura Marling’s extraordinary voice to shine.

The internets and companies relying on them are breaking for me tonight. Besides my hassles with the IRS website, a company I’m trying to contact that is supposed to be open isn’t taking my calls… and another company I’m trying to access seems to have their database down.

Our highly connected, highly complex society may not be so solid the more we stress it.

I had thought that the Communist Party USA would be in hog-heaven now that capitalist pigdom has openly endorsed genocide for profit, but, no, they seem to have barely noticed.
One major concern, as always, is the effect of US sanctions on Cuba during the crisis. They also have an article denouncing the “capitalist concept” of social distancing, though they endorse the medically proven insistence on physical distance, which is about all anyone has asked for anyway.
Their swag store (run by the Swag Collective, for real) has a few nifty items, all union made of course, but on the whole it is rather sparsely stocked, sort of a zombie version of the infamous GUM department store in communist Moscow.
It is a source of endless, if dark, amusement that this earnest but clueless little club is the number one threat in the world in millions of wingnut minds.

And just as we were feeling assured….

Add: “We “ here means my wife and I: we got our tests a week ago when Mrs Jay had to be hospitalized. Though I guess the generalized “we” is applicable as well.

Why would you not wait until it at least appears to be going down. I know they don’t give a fuck, but their main problem is that they are too stupid to listen to themselves and figure out that that they sound heartless. Fuck em all.

SRSLY. I know Phil McGraw isn’t an actual medical doctor (I don’t think), but he ought to be smart enough not to blather bad-statistic nonsense in public like that. Yeah, we don’t close down things for “automobile deaths”, but if our cars suddenly decided to turn on us and start killing thousands more drivers all at once, it might be smart to start locking down garages….

Someone should show Dr. Phil that chart showing the numbers of various causes of death (as a per-thousand rate) - diseases, accidents, etc. all display as relatively level lines over even a short timeframe: the COVID-19 rate, though, shoots up from zero at a steep peak like a Trump-recession stock chart in reverse.

Jeez! I’m virtually innumerate when it comes to statistics, and even I can see through that bullshit argument.

I know. It’s also evil for someone like Cohen, a convicted felon who helped usurp a US election in 2016, to be released from prison because he *might* become infected while serving his well deserved sentence, while poor people languish, before trial, to die in custody.

Evil. It’s disgusting.

re: #12 Jay C

will try and answer some questions and dispel some possible misconceptions about how this process works out and why there’s such tremendous wiggle room in both the numbers and what they can supposedly mean…

First my bonafides… I work as support staff for a hospital laboratory system in the pacific NW and have been working in laboratory software since 1990, now I am not a bench tech or a microbiologist, what I do is build the software tests that they use, support the software that they use and help them in reporting said test results to the lab application and then from there, those results go to a fair number of places…

So, first of all, not all tests are created equally, there’s a huge difference in just what testing protocol would be adopted and what media and methodology would be used to result it. Never mind the fuckups from the current administration as to what test would be used or simply adopting the WHO protocol that was out there because these guys are the fuckups that they are…

In short, there are clinical tests and there are “clinical tests”… the biggie testing item that was promoted to a fare thee well was that Abbott Laboratories had developed a Point of Care testing methodology for COVID-19, the thing is, POC testing is not nearly as accurate as testing run inside a laboratory itself, namely because of the differences in the media and the markers that are used to identify a positive versus a negative result. POC is great for a snapshot of your glucose levels or if you’re pregnant but beyond that… its never been done for anything like microbiology worth a damn because micro is a bit more involved, since your counting and classifying cell types. Doing that takes expertise and training or a rather sophisticated instrument to handle it once a sample is prepared for analysis.

so if a POC test is a snap shot, a clinical laboratory test done by an accredited lab is like a film short… sure you can tell a lot about a single picture, but context and depth are much more likely with a longer look at something and while you can have a 55-60% accuracy from a POC test, you’re getting a roughly 90%+ rating from something that is run thru a clinical instrument, more chemical markers are checked and cross referenced, more cells are examined and evaluated, hence the result is more accurate, again, not perfect, but much better. It takes longer to process, but just like most things, do you want good, fast or accurate. the POC test is fast, not necessarily accurate.

as more facilities get the permission to run their own tests in house, the speed of this will improve , anecdotally prior to COVID-19, flu tests sent to a reference lab or a department of health facility had a routine turn-around time of 3-5 days because they only ran them twice a week. Now, with the demand being so high, the turn around is quicker. As always the bottleneck is not enough kits and the human element of sample handling and identification being possible issues. Plus, there’s the issue of who is going to pay and how to be reimbursed. We also have the issues of the instruments being used now being run 24/7 and the maintenance needed to maintain them and the reagents used by the instruments to handle the workload of the processing.

the other issue with this damn virus is that the length that it can lurk without any symptoms, especially in those that are healthy and are carriers… If we’re talking realistically, we’re looking at like two weeks of being asymptomatic while you are a potential carrier, infecting who knows how many people unknowingly. So a snap shot may show you as being negative, when you;re really positive because its only a snap shot, so you merrily go along and infect other people thing that you’re cleared, really insidious. So yeah, that’s the clinical challenge we’re facing and how do you try and square that with everyone in today’s immediate gratification society being what it is…

Just hoping that the pressure from the most idiotic among us gets ignored by those with the power to do so, namely because these fucking people are stupid and are generally stupid about every fucking thing as well… hell, they’re the same SOB’s who voted this asshat into office, so I would trust their authority and knowledge about these things accordingly.

and my apologies for being away so long, but as might expect… work has been busy

Looks like Brazil’s nutburger President Bolsonaro has sacked his Health Minister, Dr. Luiz Henrique Mandetta.

Brazil’s President Jair Bolsonaro fired his health minister on Thursday after a series of disagreements over government efforts to contain the new coronavirus. “I just heard from the President Jair Bolsonaro the news of my dismissal from the health ministry,” Luiz Henrique Mandetta posted on his verified Twitter profile, adding that he wished success to his replacement, who is yet to be named officially. He confirmed the announcement in a press conference later.

Mandetta, a doctor, garnered popular support for his pandemic response that included promotion of broad isolation measures enacted by state governors. Bolsonaro, for his part, repeatedly characterized the virus as a “little flu,” said shutting down the economy would cause more damage than confining only high-risk Brazilians, and touted the yet-unproven efficacy of an anti-malarial drug.

Republicans close to the White House say Trump has complained about Fauci’s positive media attention and sought to leave him out of task force briefings. Bolsonaro, likewise, had convened doctors without inviting Mandetta and, in a televised interview earlier this month, said Mandetta had failed to show “humility.” A few days later, on April 5, Bolsonaro told a group of supporters that he would act against officials in his government who “are full of themselves.”

More evidence that many Covid-19 infections are going unnoticed: Coronavirus clue? Most cases aboard U.S. aircraft carrier are symptom-free
Phil Stewart, Idrees Ali
Excerpt(s):

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Sweeping testing of the entire crew of the coronavirus-stricken U.S. aircraft carrier Theodore Roosevelt may have revealed a clue about the pandemic: The majority of the positive cases so far are among sailors who are asymptomatic, officials say.
[snip]
Roughly 60 percent of the over 600 sailors who tested positive so far have not shown symptoms of COVID-19, the potentially lethal respiratory disease caused by the coronavirus, the Navy says. The service did not speculate about how many might later develop symptoms or remain asymptomatic.

Unlike our government’s thieves, at least China paid for it.

As the coronavirus took hold in Wuhan earlier this year, staff from the Chinese government-backed global property giant Greenland Group were instructed to put their normal work on hold and source bulk supplies of essential medical items to ship back to China.

A whistleblower from the company has told the Herald it was a worldwide Greenland effort - and the Sydney office was no different, sourcing bulk supplies of surgical masks, thermometers, antibacterial wipes, hand sanitisers, gloves and Panadol for shipping.

The company even posted its efforts of packing pallets in the company’s Sydney headquarters on social media.

Hence the desperation evident in the voices of those arguing that we just throw open the doors and “reopen” at the end of the month. They know that if we get to Election Day and we’re in the midst of a recession or even a depression, then Donny’s chance of reelection, let alone those of many Republicans on Capital Hill, will be lower than a snake’s balls. Hence why they’re prepared to sacrifice whoever they have to (children, the elderly, workers) on the Altar of the Magic Line.

Exchange Student’s Parents Ship 500 Masks From China To Manor (Goes to the Western Nebraska Observer, Kimball’s newspaper).

Kimball High School foreign exchange student Carina Chen’s parents in Shanghai, China, sent a special package to help Kimball County Manor get through the coronavirus pandemic.

Carina is the foreign exchange student who is living in Kimball with Dawn Hickman, Noah and Bob Hinton. She was telling her parents that some of the employees from the Kimball County Manor were having to wear their masks for more than a day at a time because the supplies were so limited. [Kimball County Manor is a convalescent home]

Carina said her parents “know some manufacturers” and were able to ship a lot of 500 masks for the manor. Originally they were going to send 1,000, but due to the customs regulations they reduced the number of masks.

Carina notes her parents say that Shanghai is about back to normal now.

Wouldn’t matter, those states would have to rewrite their electoral laws to cancel the popular vote and have the legislature appoint its own electors. And there are enough red states with Dem governors that that would never work.

re: #95 Targetpractice

Wouldn’t matter, those states would have to rewrite their electoral laws to cancel the popular vote and have the legislature appoint its own electors. And there are enough red states with Dem governors that that would never work.

Then you get to the 14th Amendment:

Section 2.
Representatives shall be apportioned among the several states according to their respective numbers, counting the whole number of persons in each state, excluding Indians not taxed. But when the right to vote at any election for the choice of electors for President and Vice President of the United States, Representatives in Congress, the executive and judicial officers of a state, or the members of the legislature thereof, is denied to any of the male inhabitants of such state, being twenty-one years of age, and citizens of the United States, or in any way abridged, except for participation in rebellion, or other crime, the basis of representation therein shall be reduced in the proportion which the number of such male citizens shall bear to the whole number of male citizens twenty-one years of age in such state.

So congratulations, you just wiped out your entire Congressional delegations, automatically, if you have the state government appoint electors or congresscritters. It looks like this would include any Senators not up for election as well.

The Divine Right of Trumps (Goes to The Rude Pundit, I wonder what he really thinks, more at the link):

Something Donald Trump said last week has just stuck in my craw. Well, to be fair, every goddamn word out of that shit-ogre’s mouth sticks in my craw. My craw is fuckin’ full. But this is a little snippet that got no attention whatsoever, but just seems to me to indicate exactly how perverse this entire depressing situation has always been.

Last Tuesday, on April 7, prior to jacking off for the media at his Coronavirus Task Force presser, Trump held the “Small Business Relief Update Meeting,” another session where he gets his balls massaged by having everyone tell him how awesome his awesomeness is. In his introductory remarks, prior to lying again about the number of jobs his daughter/genetic spank bank Ivanka has created, Trump said this: “My daughter, Ivanka Trump, who just wants to have people working. That’s what — I gave her lots of options, and - ‘What do you like?’” And then he went on to lie-brag, “She started off with a goal of 500,000 jobs, and now she’s up to over 15 million.”

Look at what he’s admitting there. The motherfuckin’ president of the United States, who is elected and doesn’t inherit the position, said that he asked his daughter, “What do you want to do in my administration?” Not what was she qualified for. And, honestly, all she’s qualified to do is be the mascot for a company of cheap knock-offs of other designers’ work and putting her stupid name it. A person with any self-awareness would have said, “Oh, that’s okay. I’m just gonna keep on abusing sweatshop workers.” But, no, in this telling, Ivanka said, “Daddy, I wish to work on getting Americans jobs.” It’s not just that the whole story is a lie (really, Ivanka’s there to make sure Donald doesn’t shit himself and keel over). It’s that the lie is disturbing as fuck: The president let his daughter choose her job in the White House, like a toy at FAO Schwarz.

She is not a conservative, but that bullshyte claim is sinking into general discussion.

I disabused her of the notion (Really? China would unleash a bioweapon on its own population to attack the USA? How does that work?)

Information on the disease outbreak was not in the public domain at that stage — and was known only apparently to the Chinese government.

The general “theory” is that the Chinese intended the virus’ release on the US population as a way to scare Trump into backing down. Wuhan? They think it was either a test run or that it was an accidental release that Beijing tried to cover up. And (of course) they believe that all the research showing this virus came about naturally and crossed the animal-human barrier is manufactured, that the WHO is actively helping Beijing in the cover-up and that’s why Trump is angry with them.

True that the NYT paywall is a PITA, but that article was just a basic rehash of what we already know: ETTD. Nut graf, IMO:

But administration officials say he has been overwhelmed at times by a permanent culture at the White House that revolves around the president’s moods, his desire to present a veneer of strength and his need for a sense of control. It is why, no matter who serves as chief of staff, the lack of formal processes and the constant infighting are unavoidable facts of life for those working for Mr. Trump.

Even though the article cites Meadows’ ex-colleagues as praising his get-along abilities (FreeDumb Caucus stalwart though he was), the idea that - for anybody - working in the Trump WH is a dead-end shitshow with no good outcomes is pretty inescapable.

States that haven’t already moved to make vote by mail a reality, need to consider doing so now, ahead of November (or the primaries that have been shifted due to covid19 limitations). It’ll be a sea change in how we vote, but one that prioritizes public involvement instead of the current mess that disenfranchises people due to limited polling places, long lines, and results in civic disengagement, voter suppression, and enables the GOP to remain in power despite continually getting fewer votes across elections.

Seeing nuts comparing the resistance to reopening the economy; e.g. “we are not willing to die for your convenience” to people being willing to abort babies for their own convenience. Yes, strawman after strawman all the way down, and zero empathy attached as well.

Some of the same group all upset that California is using funds to help out illegal immigrants that the virus has hurt. Money not being distributed directly, but via a network of non-profits and in combination with funds raised by charities. Once again, zero empathy, just kneejerk sociopathy from who some who I know are fairly religious in their personal beliefs. (Tempted to toss some Bible references their way since even the Devil can quote scripture when it serves his purposes.)

Edit: Story they’re quoting is from a Fox station, so without further investigation it might well be inaccurate or putting an outrage spin upon it at well.

…”unemployment rate” measures the percentage of Americans who are looking for a job, but don’t have one. At the moment, however, most out-of-work people aren’t actually looking, either because they expect/hope to return to their old jobs, or they fear for their health, or both…take the 22 million unemployment claims and add them to the 5 million or so people who were already on unemployment when this whole thing began, then the real unemployment rate is around 16%. If we add another 3 million people per week through the end of the month, then the real unemployment rate will be around 20%, which is approaching Great Depression levels. Worth keeping in mind when BLS announces a figure of 6% or so in a couple of weeks.

The general “theory” is that the Chinese intended the virus’ release on the US population as a way to scare Trump into backing down. Wuhan? They think it was either a test run or that it was an accidental release that Beijing tried to cover up. And (of course) they believe that all the research showing this virus came about naturally and crossed the animal-human barrier is manufactured, that the WHO is actively helping Beijing in the cover-up and that’s why Trump is angry with them.

can trump postpone the election
and
can trump postpone the election II
in short - there is no way to do this that would benefit him

a related issue: yes, there are, in the end, five ways that Donald Trump might try to stay in office beyond January 20, 2021:

- Actually win the election
- Stop the elections from being held - see above - won’t work
- Game the Electoral College - There is no scheme that ends with Trump getting a second term; there are too many counter-moves available for the Democrats, particularly at the Electoral College level.

- Muddy the results, and then get the courts to step in: (really what you’re talking about). yes, possible. not terribly likely. (read the whole paragraph at the link)

- Stage a coup: Even if Trump were to declare martial law, that does not suspend the Constitution, and thus does not change the deadline for the end of his first term. (read the whole paragraph at the link)

Most liberals wouldn’t care about what the people in the state do if their choices didn’t affect what places with liberals could do. A lot of us liberals support farms, farmers, and would never deny any aid for rural people. But when South Dakota, and other conservative states, elect people that make it hard for NY to take care of it’s people, then of course it’s going to get knocked on by liberals.

If voters who call themselves “progressive” hear what that trio has to say, and respond with “I’m never voting for Biden” or, even more significantly, “I’m voting Trump,” then how can one possibly consider them to be part of the same movement or political faction as Warren/Sanders/AOC?

Covid19 doesn’t care if you’re a conservative or liberal. It will just keep spreading if you don’t engage in stay-at-home practices, social distancing, and isolating those who are sick.

The GOP doesn’t care. They just want to reopen as though nothing’s wrong. Liberals want to make sure as few people die and get sickened from this knowing that SD health care resources are limited. They don’t have the ICU beds or ventilators to deal with a crush of cases. And those cases are coming. The dead will pile up - not in the thousands as we see in NY metro, but in dozens - at the same or higher per capita rates in NY.

That’s what we’re trying to prevent. Decimation.

Yesterday (seems like a year ago!), I posted a link to Greg Palast’s blog: Rush to Vote-by-Mail could cost Dems the Election
Mail-in Voting puts Millions of Minority Ballots at Risk

I get it: We all must vote by mail—or we die. There is really no other safe choice.

But there is much to fear, especially for minority and young voters, with a switch to all-mail voting—unless our broken absentee ballot system is fixed.

Here’s what the “Go Postal” crowd doesn’t tell you: In 2016, 512,696 mail-in ballots—over half a million—were simply rejected, not counted. That’s official, from the federal Elections Assistance Commission (EAC).

But that’s just the tip of the ballot-berg of uncounted mail-in votes. A study by MIT, Losing Votes by Mail, puts the total loss of mail-in votes at a breathtaking 22%.

I don’t know how true this is, but knowing who we are up against, it seems possible.

Interesting article:

My Wild, Totally Surreal Experience Covering a Trump Coronavirus Briefing

POLITICO - Your forehead, please,” said the woman in a mask.

She was a medical technician sitting in a tent outside the northwest gate of the White House in the otherwise deserted section of Pennsylvania Avenue that is usually crammed with tourists in April.

Donald Trump’s daily 5 p.m. show — officially described on the White House schedule as a press briefing by Members of the Coronavirus Task Force — was scheduled to start. It is at this surreal moment in American politics the only news event that really matters. The entire country is sitting at home looking for expert guidance. On some days, we get it. Early on when Dr. Anthony Fauci first explained the idea behind social distancing or when Dr. Deborah Birx introduced us all to the concept of bending the curve, the briefings were crucial— perhaps the closest thing in modern times to one of FDR’s fireside chats during the Depression and World War II, a news briefing from government officials who your life actually depended on.

But they quickly descended into Trumpian theater. Useful information from the doctors became mixed in with long rants from Trump on peripheral issues. The relationship between Trump and the task force members themselves, especially Fauci, who became a media hero, gradually started to dominate the sessions, as if Trump couldn’t help but turn the crisis into a reality show about himself and his staff and his peculiar obsessions of the moment.

This week, especially Monday’s event, the briefings reached the zenith of showcasing unusual behavior, peripheral issues and petty intrigue. On Monday, Trump played a propaganda video, angrily attacked reporters sitting a few feet away, declared himself to have “total authority,” and pressed officials — some more reluctantly (Fauci) than others (Mike Pence) — to stand before the cameras and deliver obsequious praise while he hovered nearby.

The briefings have sent Trump’s political opponents, particularly Joe Biden, who continues to be quarantined at home in Delaware, scrambling for ways to gain attention. And they have created a crisis in the news media, as networks and online publications struggle with how to cover them and whether it’s appropriate to play the briefings, which are larded with erroneous information and campaign-like speechifying, live.

Watching these events on television doesn’t capture how surreal they really are, so on Monday and Wednesday, I ventured to the White House to see them up close.

I highly recommend reading the whole thing.

im fine with people believing (faith without proof) whatever they want - politically, religiously, ‘scientifically’.

one big reason for the 40-45% intransigence is there’s no effective challenge to those beliefs.

covid-19 is reality slapping their “personal, sincere and firmly held” beliefs in the face

You can’t challenge the beliefs of people in their bubble. Death of a loved one might do it but I’m not even counting on that.

Sigh. Germany mortality rate (deaths / total cases) has reached 3%. And Diamond Princess is up to 1.8%. That suggests either the most recent death was NOT among the serious/critical cases — or perhaps another active case slipped into that category. In South Korea, A Growing Number Of COVID-19 Patients Test Positive After Recovery

A growing number of recovered COVID-19 patients are relapsing in South Korea, raising new questions and concerns among scientists and health authorities after the country successfully flattened the curve.

By Friday, Korean health authorities had identified 163 patients who tested positive again after a full recovery. The number more than doubled in about a week, up from 74 cases on April 9. Those patients — just over 2% of the country’s 7,829 recovered patients — are now back in isolation.

The Court in FDR’s time was also very hostile. That’s when FDR suggested court packing. The Court suddenly found room in the Constitution for what FDR was doing. Amazing, that.

Jeff Sessions, running of course again, is full on yellow-peril and ban the foreigners bandwagon, now stating that the US should not all employment-based immigration until the unemployment rate is below 3.5%.

Of course that is nonsense as employment visas are usually for specific skills that are needed, and these tend to be professional jobs.

And 3.5% is one of those numbers that is irrelevant as unemployment figures, as has often been discussed, are largely misleading in regards to the facts of what happens in jobs for most people.

Yesterday (seems like a year ago!), I posted a link to Greg Palast’s blog: Rush to Vote-by-Mail could cost Dems the Election
Mail-in Voting puts Millions of Minority Ballots at Risk

I don’t know how true this is, but knowing who we are up against, it seems possible.

What I don’t think he accounts for is that mail in ballots significantly increases turnout, and there would still be more total votes even accounting for breakage. Relatedly, he fails to account for the fact that voting by mail might be the only means by which lots of people can participate (i.e. for folks that can’t get out of work to get to a polling booth or don’t have an ID, etc.).

Fact is, Colorado, as an example, has universal mail in balloting. Turnout is extremely high and it is blue (and getting bluer).

Unless I am mis-remembering, I thought the general philosophical belief underpinning libertarianism is that you can basically do whatever you want provided that you didn’t hurt others and/or intrude on other’s individual liberties. Seems the idea that people could be walking around, spreading COVID-19 will-nilly, is antithetical to libertarian thought.

Of course, I am falling into the trap of believing that people professing to be libertarian actually have a coherent core philosophy.

So 95% of us do not have immunity.

Yes. But we do need a test that can identify people who may be immune to the disease. OTOH, we do not yet know whether these antibodies do protect you from a subsequent re-infection.

However, if these numbers hold up statewide (which they probably won’t), this suggests that there were at least 800,000 cases in California instead of the 28,000 cases now reported from that state. Wait until there is a followup to confirm that this test indeed identified exposure to COVID 19. And whether it proves anything about individual immunity.

Libertarianism is, at it’s core, a justification for individual greed.

if the court distorts or destroys the system that badly, they lose their own power.
and robert’s place in history becomes what?

as to a coup:
- trump hasnt filled the upper military with loyalists

I’m not particularly worried about individuals hoarding the available stockpiles. I worry more about the Feds confiscating much of the current supply and the means of production, and seeking to seize control of imports. Because “national security” —but really just corruption/theft/profiteering —like they’ve already done with stockpiles and shipments of PPE and ventilators.
