Cops respond to protests against systemic racism and police brutality with military tactics, macing and more of the same violence that protesters are working to shut down. #DailyShow #TrevorNoah #BlackLivesMatter

Unconfirmed reports suggest the Trump Admin also wants CNN to apologize for:

- saying Oprah Winfrey is black
- describing objects covered in water as “wet”
- An in-depth report that the sky is blue
- A multi-segment series claiming rich people have a lot of money

Help me out here, Lizards: I saw a familiar name in that CNN piece: Jenna Ellis, the Trump campaign’s “senior legal advisor”, and it struck a familiar note: wasn’t she recently in the news for publicizing some other stupid shit on behalf of the campaign? Or making some unfathomably dumb comment or other?

The most recent thing that comes up on the Google is an interview with Laura Trump posted to Donny’s YouTube channel. I didn’t watch much (and watched with closed captions) but it pretty much Donald Trump is the best president ever and his actions totally uphold his constitutional oath.

I don’t know if it has been posted here, but apparently George Floyd was victimized by a crooked cop in Houston before running into the MPD. From the Daily Beast:

Goines [the Houston cop] had been the one and only witness when he arrested Floyd back on Feb. 5, 2004, for supposedly providing him with less than a gram of cocaine.
[…]
Goines’ veracity in general was called into question after he was arrested last year. He was alleged to have cited a fictitious informant in securing a search warrant for a house where there was supposed drug dealing. The ensuing raid resulted in Dennis Tuttle and his wife, Rhogena Nicholas, being shot to death by police, who also killed their dog. No drugs were found. The couple seems to have been wholly innocent.

[…]The Harris County district attorney subsequently sought to overturn 73 cases in which Goines was the only person who witnessed the supposed transaction.

That included the case against Floyd, who subsequently went from encountering one of the very worst cops in Houston to encountering one of the very worst cops in Minneapolis.

Every aspect of the DOJ filing in the Flynn case was bulkshit and prejudicial in favor of Flynn whereas every other defendant who has ever made any remotely similar claim has been strenuously opposed by the same DOJ.

The law of the case (the facts and ruling that guide the case as it progresses through the courts) all goes against the DOJ filing to drop the Flynn case.

It again points to prosecutorial misconduct by Barr and helping out Trump cronies despite the settled law and facts of the case.

This is one of the oddest 2020 trends. The RNC has also been alerting reporters to how GOP candidates endorsed by the president are winning primaries, even though many are incumbents w gadfly challengers.

It’s not ‘odd’, it’s par for the course. It’s Trump and his enablers once again punching strawmen and setting the bar so low that even a perennial failure like him can clear it, atop chronic toadyism in the GOP.

The funny thing about all of this is that Trump could have just pardoned Stone and while people would have bitched about an abuse of the pardon power, it would blow over in a few days because it’s not like the House would impeach him over it and it’s not like the Senate would remove him over it. Instead, Barr has led the DOJ on a parade over the department’s metaphorical dick.

Someone at DOJ told Trump that pardoning Flynn or Stone would open the door to them testifying against Trump without any 5A protections, exposing Trump to more liability than if they tried to cover it up in the way done so far.

But it’s also elevated the calls for Barr to be investigated for interfering in these investigations and throwing out well settled law (and law of the case) to help out Trump’s criminal cronies.

Very hard to do since they have to work as a team to build criminal cases for trial. I would suggest a special state division of prosecutors and investigators who solely investigate and prosecute cops, so they don’t have a relationship to protect.

General rule, judges really don’t fucking like it when parties do that.

I came across some cases years ago where courts were furious with lenders in mortgage fraud cases (and in particular the MERS system) where they would tell one court they were the lender and another they’d tell they were “just the servicer” (even though nobody had a working definition of “servicer” at the time) basically changing who they were based on the jurisdiction and claims.

I’m not sure. How the hell is this disrespectful to the military? That we might rename forts that are named after men who literally wanted to do all they could to separate the United States? As I said, I’m all for remembering our history which is why I want Union heroes especially African-American ones to get their due in history. Not just Frederick Douglas, Sojourner Truth, but other names. Earlier in the year, I visited the African-American Civil War Memorial and I was struck by a though as I’m a descendant of a Civil War veteran but the African Americans who fought for the Union or aided its military in any way during the war risked a lot more than my Great Great Grandfather.

Petraeus weighed in on this in the Atlantic:

Take the Confederate Names Off Our Army Bases
It is time to remove the names of traitors like Benning and Bragg from our country’s most important military installations.

JUNE 9, 2020

His whole argument is worth the read. But I liked this tidbit:

It also happens that—Lee excepted—most of the Confederate generals for whom our bases are named were undistinguished, if not incompetent, battlefield commanders.* Braxton Bragg, for example, left a great deal to be desired as a military leader. After graduating from West Point in 1837, he served in the Second Seminole War and the Mexican War. His reputation for physical bravery was matched by one for epic irascibility. Bragg’s temper was so bad, Ulysses S. Grant recounted in his memoirs, that an old Army story had a superior once rebuking him, “My God, Mr. Bragg, you have quarreled with every officer in the army, and now you are quarrelling with yourself!” Bragg’s inability to cooperate diluted his effectiveness until his resounding defeat at the Battle of Chattanooga, in November 1863, precipitated his resignation from the Confederate army.

Why a GOP Convention in Jacksonville Could Be a Disaster
The decision to move the event from Charlotte has the makings of a political debacle and a health crisis. by Martin Longman, Wash. Monthly

More thoughts. Are the same people going to be in Charlotte for meetings and votes and Jacksonville for speeches? Can’t be in two places at once.

Many of the delegates are elderly, including a lot of the Reps and Sens. Are they going to be happy cramming in for a convention like usual?

Jacksonville will have to relax its own regulations to allow for this.

Obviously, a prerequisite of the deal is that the city gives assurances that social distancing won’t be required, but objectively there isn’t much rationale for this. Florida is currently getting more than 1,000 new cases of COVID-19 a day, and their R value is 1.07, meaning that the infection is spreading rather than contracting.

We’re talking about bringing people from every state and territory in the country to Jacksonville, most of them on airplanes, having them mingle closely in a closed arena, and then sending them back to the communities from which they came. This could create a nationwide spike in COVID-19 which would become evident by mid-September. Quite apart from the health component, I don’t think that’s good politics.

So, yes, I think Trump and the Republicans are setting themselves up for disaster and a well-deserved rebuke by the voters.

And you don’t have to stick to Civil War heroes. World War 1 is over a 100 years over, and World War II nearly 75 years past. Plenty of heroes there to use as names, even if you’re trying to match the heroes’ home state to where the base is located; e.g. finding a Georgian to use to replace the name for Fort Benning.

That’s right. I think I remember reading that when Grant met with Lee at Appamatox. The Southern officer corps, like Lee pretty much all from the old plantation aristocracy were shocked at the modesty of his dress. I still need to see the Grant history channel thing and read Chernow’s biography but I am glad Grant is getting his due not just as a general but as an American too. He had flaws for sure but he did the heavy lifting on Reconstruction that Johnson did not do and that Hayes was willing to end Reconstruction in exchange for the South letting the shady events of the 1876 election go.

Unfortunately one of my few full trial jury experiences included watching a Philadelphia ADA do some very bad lawyering.* Or at least in my view in a legal sense. And I’m pretty sure his boss came into the room during at least part of the trial to see what he was doing.

* - The defense lawyers were no gems either. Both sides got sidebarred by the judge at least once regarding how to conduct proceedings and making statements that were immediately objected to. Typical BS stuff trying to sway the jury emotionally.

Quite: this is obviously one of those “kids’ history” illustrations.

Though Lee was togged out in his fanciest dress uniform (which he had never worn before). Okay, the minute he got to “Karens” and stepped around the definition of the slang that specifically was about white women abused privilege I started getting skeptical.

But going farther…bullshit.

Comparing restrictions based on pandemic conditions to restrictions based on national security of the post-9/11 era is flawed. The further declaration that our “obedience because it makes us feel safe” is the same under those two conditions, and “bad” is flawed. Specifically honing in on the idea that ruling about essential/nonessential businesses being forced closed is tyranny, and that George Floyd’s status as an unemployed non-essential worker somehow contributed to his death is disgusting. The tacked-on idea that this upheaval is the product of COVID rather than the endpoint of decades of bullshit is wretched. The further attempt to both-sides an authoritarian state versus rioters is the ultimately mealy-mouth simpering about only getting change the right way that caused no inconvenience…which dovetails well with the message that we must take “risks” (return to the status quo in spite of coronavirus) to be free and to return to a society.

The way that it ducks around anti-black racism in the US and how that’s THE obstacle to everyone just trusting one another feels downright Procrustean. This isn’t a video about the world, it’s fitting what’s happening into the author’s worldview so that what makes him comfortable is what’s right and good.

ETA:

Hey, chances are pretty good it’s a Randroid channel, if you look at the other stuff it puts up and the endless anti-leftist comments that specifically see the tyranny referenced in the video as Cultural Marxists and political correctness, with no reference to the reactionary political project actual the problems right now.

I imagine the Union veterans of the Civil War would’ve felt highly disrespected that these bases were named after the traitors they defeated.

Union veterans hated any monuments to the South. The Grand Army of the Republic spoke out against it loudly.

“We reiterate that we are opposed to the erection of monuments by the great or small upon the battlefields of Gettysburg or any other place that will in the slightest degree make glorious the deeds of those who trampled under foot the national ensign. We believe in making treason odious.”

The only reason to watch the film is to use it as a starting point for all of the confederate myths. But I also like to think that Scarlet represents the South and Rhett represents the North.

More like Scarlett was the romantic past of The South, with it’s stubborn determination to adhere to the past and Rhett a more realistic and adapting part that would cooperate with the new forces in the region. But if it came down to it, still act to maintain what was determined to be the proper social order.

Which is also part of the confederate myth. There was a whole genre of literature featuring romances between southern women and northern men that symbolized the reunion of north and south and most importantly moving on.

Amazon bases its rankings on sales data. The site currently offers the 70th anniversary two-disc DVD edition of “Gone With the Wind” starting at $29.55, while Amazon Video offers the movie as a digital HD rental at $3.99 and for purchase at $9.99.

Hearing some people I know are conservatives at work, and one of them said “Racism is part of the human condition.”

Fear of others is probably part of the human conditions. A few thousand/million years of evolution where food was scarce and competition high probably contributed to that. And then layer on a few thousand years of human history where the same instincts for resources drove civilizations to conquer others didn’t help any. But racism in the modern sense (let’s say post-1500 CE) is something different. At that point, it’s a power structure created and enforced by regional powers to consolidate and expand their power.

The big irony about Columbus is that he was so stupidly, stubbornly wrong in his initial assumption, that Japan lay within practical sailing distance westward. The “learned men” who advised against the trip were exactly right. They knew the Earth was round, they knew how big it was and they knew the approximate distance to Japan. This was all common knowledge among educated Europeans. Thanks to accounts from Marco Polo and lesser known travelers, they knew that Japan lay in the ocean not too far eastward of China. I suspect that the absurd “flat Earth” myth was invented specifically to make him less of a fool so he could be glorified as a needed hero.
If the un-suspected continent had not intervened, Columbus would have sailed off into the setting sun never to be seen again. He would be remembered, if at all, as an arrogant numbskull who ignored science and took a hundred men and 3 ships with him when he committed suicide.

re: #196 Backwoods_Sleuth

I’ve been thinking about the whole “who will protect us if not the police” argument and the more I think about it, the more I have come to the conclusion that the police don’t really stop crime.

Like, yes, there are situations where they do. But those usually involve investigations of ongoing crimes and undercover/sting operations. But the typical cop that most people think of (blue uniform, driving around in a car, wearing a badge, carrying a gun), they don’t really stop crime. They are more a reactionary force.

Outside of the instance where, for example, a dude decides to rob a liquor store, walks in with a gun in his waist band and sees a cop getting a cup of coffee and then decides not to go through with it, a beat cop isn’t stopping a lot of crime. And even in that example, he’s probably completely unaware that he “stopped a crime.”

More often, what the police do is show up after a crime has happened, take a report, and (depending on how big the crime was) do some investigating. But if it was a case of someone breaking your car window in the middle of the night and rummaging for change, chances are, that report is going to go into a file and nothing will come of it. Same, most likely, if your house is broken into and you don’t have some sort of video security system in place.

So my quick and dirty scratch calculation is that Biden needs one of the barely-dem states in that map (the blue-bordered states) to win. I’m… nervous about that for a lot of specific reasons. It’s definitely a dominant position.

In general though, it’s back to “Trump has to run the table” - but that’s what I said just before election night 2016, and that makes me want to go puke.

2016 was the convergence of every possible bad outcome, including a target that had been harrassed for 30+ years.

In addition to recommending a number of gemstone amulets against the plague, he [Issac Newton] gave detailed instructions on how to make the putrid toad-vomit treatment, according to two unpublished pages handwritten by Newton that are now on the auction block.

Newton describes in detail how to suspend a toad by its legs in a chimney for three days, until it vomits up “earth with various insects in it.” This vomit must be caught on “a dish of yellow wax,” he added. Source: Live Science

Well, it actually started as legit stock car racing. In fact, in the early days, some of the competitors would drive to the racetrack and back in the exact same vehicle they’d race in.

As the years passed, the race cars got faster and more advanced and no longer “anything but stock” but since the name was already so well known, it continued to be referred to as NASCAR.

HOWEVER, the % testing positive appears to have reached some sort of local minima last week, and indications are that the percentage testing positive is beginning to increase again.

Given what is going on elsewhere, I think it is obvious that shut-downs really did slow the spread. Now with everyone thinking the pandemic is past, we’re going to really see a surge in cases.

Not far from me is the Jefferson Davis Manor and Presidential Library. JD was of course the first and only President of the CSA.

The JD Library is not an official Presidential Library and is not administered by the same group who handles the Libraries of legitimate American Presidents. Instead, the JD Library is supported mostly by donations.

I’ve visited the Manor before (it was free at the time so why not?) and it’s interesting from an architectural and historical perspective, but I don’t really care about the Library.

I’m wondering if there might be a push around here to close it down or change it given all that’s been happening, but then again, the fight has been going on for years to get the Confederate Flag off the MS state flag without success, so I’m not holding my breath.

Fellow Lizards, I am in the ER. Early this morning I woke up in a cold sweat, with dizziness and nausea. The worst is I can’t keep my balance. Had a scan done and I have an aneurysm, and had two mini strokes last night. Heartbeats was also at 38. I feel fine now but I can’t walk without falling over. I’m having surgery in the morning to repair the vessel. They’re running a line up my leg and installing a clip (like a stint for an artery.) Procedure takes about an hour. If all goes well I should be able to get my walking back. My understanding is this area of the brain controls the right side of my body. Also, I can lift, stretch , and push with power from all my limbs. I’ll be up all night reading, I’m bored AF.

From the gym with the racist workout.

NEWSER) - A Wisconsin gym has apologized for an “I Can’t Breathe” workout that was apparently well-intentioned—but staggeringly misguided. Photos shared on social media show a whiteboard at the Wauwatosa branch of Anytime Fitness with a drawing of a kneeling black figure, the words “I Can’t Breathe” and “Don’t You Dare Lay Down,” and a list of exercises. Co-owner Jen Dunnington tells TMZ that she “deeply apologizes” to the many people offended by the sign. She says a trainer intended to “honor” George Floyd, who repeatedly said he couldn’t breathe as a police officer knelt on his neck for more than 8 minutes. She says the exercises were meant to “be a workout so hard that we felt what he felt.”

Corporate management issued a statement saying they were “shocked and devastated to see that one of our franchise locations chose to offer an ‘I Can’t Breathe’ workout.” They said they are sharing the incident with franchise owners worldwide as “an example of what not to do.” The Milwaukee Journal Sentinel notes that “I Can’t Breathe” has been chanted at protests worldwide over Floyd’s death, including one involving hundreds of demonstrators in Wauwatosa days before the workout sign went up.

She’s not making it better.

Yeah that’s why. Not the whole genocide thing. Dinesh is such a dimwit.

If you read the tweet closely, Dinesh is suggesting that Columbus was smart enough to find America.

However, in reality Columbus was trying to find trade routes to the Far East.

And the only reason Columbus beat the others by a few years is because he got the Spanish crown to fund him.

And another thing: not only did Native American ancestors cross dangerous ice bridges collapsing at the end of the last glaciation, they did so without any apparent instruments.

Indeed, I think we can look back and say that Dinesh’s vaunted Christian Europe was way behind the times. Pagan vikings made it across the Atlantic. A millennium earlier Chinese sailers made it Africa. Polynesians started off somewhere around Taiwan and eventually ended up in Easter Island, and that is a long, long way.

If you read the tweet closely, Dinesh is suggesting that Columbus was smart enough to find America.

However, in reality Columbus was trying to find trade routes to the Far East.

And the only reason Columbus beat the others by a few years is because he go the Spanish crown to fund him.

Their statues should be torn down and pissed on by every American. They levyed war against the United States. That is treason. They should have all been hung not glorified with statues.

US Constitution

Article III

Section 3.
Treason against the United States, shall consist only in levying war against them, or in adhering to their enemies, giving them aid and comfort. No person shall be convicted of treason unless on the testimony of two witnesses to the same overt act, or on confession in open court.

The Congress shall have power to declare the punishment of treason, but no attainder of treason shall work corruption of blood, or forfeiture except during the life of the person attainted.

This allows me to use my favorite GRRM quote from ASOIAF:

“Father had only gone out to ransom Petyr Pimple. He brought them the gold they asked for, but they hung him anyway.”
“Hanged, Ami. Your father was not a tapestry.”

Viganò goes on to denounce Catholic Bishops who’ve expressed support for the protests, saying “They are subservient to the deep state, to globalism, to aligned thought, to the New World Order which they invoke ever more frequently in the name of a universal brotherhood which has nothing Christian about it”

spinal tap

I had a myelogram, which is a spinal tap where a dye is injected and x - rays are taken. Normally the injection site heals up just like a spinal tap would. In my case it didn’t, and when you lifted your head and trunk up the spinal fluid would leak out giving you the worst of all headsches. Fixing it required performing a blood patch, where they inject blood at the original injection site.

Speaking of GWTW

BLAZING A TRAIL
Hattie McDaniel wasn’t allowed to attend the Gone With the Wind premiere in Atlanta because of her race. Shortly afterward, she won an Oscar for her performance and earned an indelible place in movie history. Vanity Fair

Eighty years ago, in 1940, the Academy Awards were held at the Ambassador Hotel in Los Angeles. Hattie McDaniel, radiant in a rhinestone-studded blue evening gown, was relegated to a small table along a side wall, apart from Vivien Leigh, Clark Gable, and the rest of her Gone With the Wind castmates. The reason was as simple as it was outrageous: The hotel had a no-blacks policy. Months earlier, McDaniel had been excluded from the movie’s premiere in Atlanta for the same reason. If not for the film’s producer, David O. Selznick, having called in a favor, she wouldn’t have been permitted inside the Ambassador, either.

Upon receiving the Oscar for her role as the sassy maid, Mammy, McDaniel told the audience—which was all white, save for her escort, F.P. Yober— ” I sincerely hope I shall always be a credit to my race and to the motion picture industry.”

Seventy years later, when Mo’Nique won an Oscar for her role in the movie Precious, she wore white gardenias in her hair, just as McDaniel had done. ” I want to thank Ms. Hattie McDaniel for enduring all that she had to so that I would not have to,” she said when accepting the award. …

Especially funny since Columbus was an Italian Catholic sponsored by the Spanish Catholics and you know how neither Italians, Spanish, or Catholics (might as well throw in the Irish) weren’t considered “white” for the longest time.

Honestly, I think it is mostly a case of wanting to believe a myth over the truth of history. Myths are nice, they’re stories that have the rougher edges all sanded down, none of the messy facts of history. Same thing with the confederacy. They want to believe the myth that their ancestors weren’t fighting for a racist institution but was instead because of some truthy northern aggression.

HOLY FUCKING HELL.

That letter is an justifcation for casus belli by the racists.

We will also discover that the riots in these days were provoked by those who, seeing that the virus is inevitably fading and that the social alarm of the pandemic is waning, necessarily have had to provoke civil disturbances, because they would be followed by repression which, although legitimate, could be condemned as an unjustified aggression against the population. The same thing is also happening in Europe, in perfect synchrony. It is quite clear that the use of street protests is instrumental to the purposes of those who would like to see someone elected in the upcoming presidential elections who embodies the goals of the deep state and who expresses those goals faithfully and with conviction. It will not be surprising if, in a few months, we learn once again that hidden behind these acts of vandalism and violence there are those who hope to profit from the dissolution of the social order so as to build a world without freedom: Solve et Coagula, as the Masonic adage teaches.

Although it may seem disconcerting, the opposing alignments I have described are also found in religious circles. There are faithful Shepherds who care for the flock of Christ, but there are also mercenary infidels who seek to scatter the flock and hand the sheep over to be devoured by ravenous wolves. It is not surprising that these mercenaries are allies of the children of darkness and hate the children of light: just as there is a deep state, there is also a deep church that betrays its duties and forswears its proper commitments before God. Thus the Invisible Enemy, whom good rulers fight against in public affairs, is also fought against by good shepherds in the ecclesiastical sphere. It is a spiritual battle, which I spoke about in my recent Appeal which was published on May 8.

For this reason, I believe that the attack to which you were subjected after your visit to the National Shrine of Saint John Paul II is part of the orchestrated media narrative which seeks not to fight racism and bring social order, but to aggravate dispositions; not to bring justice, but to legitimize violence and crime; not to serve the truth, but to favor one political faction. And it is disconcerting that there are Bishops - such as those whom I recently denounced - who, by their words, prove that they are aligned on the opposing side. They are subservient to the deep state, to globalism, to aligned thought, to the New World Order which they invoke ever more frequently in the name of a universal brotherhood which has nothing Christian about it, but which evokes the Masonic ideals of those want to dominate the world by driving God out of the courts, out of schools, out of families, and perhaps even out of churches.

The American people are mature and have now understood how much the mainstream media does not want to spread the truth but seeks to silence and distort it, spreading the lie that is useful for the purposes of their masters. However, it is important that the good - who are the majority - wake up from their sluggishness and do not accept being deceived by a minority of dishonest people with unavowable purposes. It is necessary that the good, the children of light, come together and make their voices heard. What more effective way is there to do this, Mr. President, than by prayer, asking the Lord to protect you, the United States, and all of humanity from this enormous attack of the Enemy? Before the power of prayer, the deceptions of the children of darkness will collapse, their plots will be revealed, their betrayal will be shown, their frightening power will end in nothing, brought to light and exposed for what it is: an infernal deception.

And Trump’s giving a speech in a week in the same place as the Tusla massacre??!? And that speech is being written by Stephen “lets have a race war” Miller?

This is not looking good.

(1) From Politico - this is amazing. If you’re not following what’s going on with General Flynn, Judge Sullivan & Judge Gleeson, you should start:

Heh, from TPM:

The former judge even cited Barr himself as saying that Trump’s public statements about ongoing Justice Department cases “make it impossible to do my job and to assure the courts and the prosecutors in the department that we’re doing our work with integrity.”

That’ll leave a mark.

I’ve had low esteem for the Catholic Church ever since I was a kid in school and several boys and girls said they wanted nothing to do with certain priests and nuns.

I read the Pennsylvania Grand Jury report on the depravity of Catholic Bishops covering up child molesting priests and nuns. It hurt so much to know that the District Attorney for my home county (Beaver) who Dad always respected conspired with those perverts.

The Republican Party has become the defender and enabler of child molesting priests and nuns. It’s time to round up these short eyes and lock them in jail for the rest of their perverted lives.

Regarding Dinesh D’stupid:

Columbus was looking for a passage to the Far East to open up trade routes.

The native cultures who were already in North America realized they lived in a vast land rich with flora, fauna, minerals and other resources. They didn’t need to explore anywhere else or seek out trade because they already had plenty of anything they might need.

I could also point out that the Basques almost certainly knew about North America. The fishing fleet went out every year, disappeared over the horizon and then reappeared months later with lots and lots of dried fish. You can’t dry fish on a little boat at sea. They landed somewhere and weren’t about to share the fishing location with the competition.

re: #128 FFL (GOP Delenda Est)

Unfortunately one of my few full trial jury experiences included watching a Philadelphia ADA do some very bad lawyering.* Or at least in my view in a legal sense. And I’m pretty sure his boss came into the room during at least part of the trial to see what he was doing.

* - The defense lawyers were no gems either. Both sides got sidebarred by the judge at least once regarding how to conduct proceedings and making statements that were immediately objected to. Typical BS stuff trying to sway the jury emotionally.

when i was thinking of going to law school, I found myself on a forum where there was a lot of discussion about fourth-tier law schools and just how bad the lawyering was. Somebody had put up audio from a courtroom where a lawyer from I think Loyola in New Orleans was being held in contempt by a judge for being grossly incompetent. He said something about writing a letter to the law school admonishing them for the pathetic quality of their graduates (apparently this was not the first really bad lawyer from that school he’d encountered).

re: #432 steve_davis

School’s reputations for the quality of their graduates gets around pretty quickly in professional circles. Might be bases on very small sample sizes, but if an incompetent from a particular school gets loose the school’s reputation is probably wrecked for a period of time in that location.

I know that the group of engineers my father worked with in the 1970s thought poorly of engineers from Case & Western, but never heard or found out the reasons why.

Dan Brown wrote a sequel to The Da Vinci Code, titled The Lost Symbol, in which the antagonist threatens to reveal the “Secrets of the Masons” by uploading a video to YouTube (but with no idea of how to make it go viral) 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣

SPOILER: The “Lost Symbol” is not lost, or a secret, in fact it is a corporate logo that you see every day, but Dan Brown wants you to think that no one knows this.

I am sure there are like a bazillion YouTube videos and websites revealing “The Secrets Of The Masons” but I am too lazy to Google.

re: #207 Shiplord Kirel, Friend of Moose and Squirrel

He would be remembered, if at all, as an arrogant numbskull who ignored science and took a hundred men and 3 ships with him when he committed suicide.

they knew the world was round. they miscalculated just how round it was because they had no good way of gauging longitude. There is also a rumour that Columbus had access to a Turkish map that was surprisingly good but which also didn’t show the Americas because the Chinese map it was based on also didn’t have the Americas on it. In other words, he was honestly not stupid. He was pretty damned brave. He also turned out to be rapacious and brutal towards natives. Then again, that was par for the course at the time.

I’ve read all of Dan Brown’s books. Some of the early ones were pretty good (though I was not impressed by The Da Vinci Code), but mostly I read them out of a morbid fascination with a guy who is utterly formulaic and definitely a conspiratard.

Hitler was a mediocre artist at best, which is why he kept getting rejected from art schools. What he would have been better at was architecture, as he had a great eye for detail when it came to buildings and geography, but he was utter shit when it came to actually painting people.

This would also explain his obsession with the various architectural ambitions of post-war Germany, whether it was minor monuments to the grand restoration of Berlin that was simply dubbed “Germania.”

Irish, too.

Possibly. It’s known that Columbus had made a couple of voyages to Ireland when he was younger - probably as as the junior navigator on Genoese trading convoys; and possibly as far as Iceland too. So old Chris had a practical knowledge of (at least some part of) Northern waters as well as the Med and the Azores.

It’s still likely, though, that he deliberately bullshitted Ferdinand and Isabella over his “shorter” route to “Asia”, but that’s ancient history, now….

re: #467 Jay C

The one thing that we know of more or less for certain is that he had knowledge of the trade winds that circulate over the Atlantic, and that bespeaks some knowledge of both North and South. Columbus would pioneer the routes that would dominate the Europe-Africa-Caribbean-North America circuit for the next 400 years.
