“In January, Yahoo gave us the opportunity to call some of our artist friends in New Orleans to help us record ”What The World Needs now” and it was one of the most powerful moments I’ve ever experienced in a room full of artists. It was so New Orleans. The voices of the children, the poets, the different tones and textures of all the artist was truly transforming. I believe that everyone can testify how high the emotions ran this particular day. It’s my hope that people will become moved, active, and use love in their weaponry in fighting for what they believe Sn right.” - Tarriona Tank Ball

President Donald Trump on Monday rejected pleas from Tulsa, Oklahoma, not to risk aggravating coronavirus risks by holding a rally there, announcing he wants to triple the crowd to 60,000 people.

“We have a 22,000 seat arena, but I think we’re also going to take the convention hall next door and that’s going to hold 40,000,” he told reporters at the White House.

He was responding to criticism from the local Tulsa newspaper and a top public health official in the city about his election campaign rally, which is scheduled for Saturday and comes as Oklahoma is seeing a recent increase in COVID-19 cases.

“This is the wrong time,” the Tulsa World newspaper said in a bluntly worded editorial.

“We don’t know why he chose Tulsa, but we can’t see any way that his visit will be good for the city.”

Okay, it’s a little thing. But when Trump says, “We have a 22,000 seat arena”, and every bit of information says it’s 19,000 and some, I always wonder - why does he have to lie about EVERY SINGLE GODDAM THING? I mean, what’s the pathology? What goes on in his head when he says shit like this?

Yeah, but you know that, as the night follows the day, tomorrow it’ll be a 24,000 seat arena and another one of 50,000.

Or, hell, later tonight.

Brings back the memory of my pyrotechnics instructor, back when I became a licensed pyro, telling stories about the local rednecks buying 16” mortars, setting them up on top of the bluff, and punting them over the edge after lighting them.

“Is it necessary for us to social distance as the experts for so long had said? I think a lot of people could argue against that.”

Oh, sure. But then you can find people who argue that the earth is flat and NASA faked the moon landing, and 9/11 was an inside job, and Michelle Obama is a man. Finding people who will argue one way or another is not how you determine the truth of something.

But this does tell you that Eric married a sociopath. He better continue to be at least partially valuable to her.

Yeah, you can find someone who is willing to argue the other side of virtually any topic. Though you shouldn’t be surprised if many of those folks wear tin-foil on their heads and keep looking around for things that aren’t there.

I wonder is there’s a name for the inverse of the “Bandwagon Effect”. In this case, I wonder if there will be some kind of ‘snowball’ effect of people running from Trump. After last weeks CNN poll with Biden up by 14, Scott Rasmussen (no longer associated with his old company) released a poll showing Biden up by 12.

At some point, if this keeps up, Republicans will become more willing to buck him, because his coattails will be negative.

I mean, it’s a lot to hope for, but you gotta have hope, right?

The Repubs have sort of locked themselves into a very unenviable spot: They wrapped themselves around Trump when they thought he was going to win, but now can’t unwrap themselves for fear that their base will abandon them. So they’re left trying to BS people into believing they’re “independent” and playing up what few “achievements” they may have without mentioning Trump’s name.

Does the 19000 include additional seating on the arena floor? Can’t do that for a game, but it is pretty standard for a political rally. Unless there is some kind of pandemic going on, then you would have to be an idiot to try to pack extra people in…

Good article about that:

People involved with Clearview appear to have gone to great lengths to conceal their links to the company and each other. Johnson, for instance, does not appear on any of the incorporation documents and has left little public trace of his association with Ton-That beyond a Facebook post. But multiple far-right sources who know Johnson told HuffPost that he and Ton-That were in close contact at least as early as 2016, and that Johnson told them he was working with Ton-That on facial recognition…

Video and private messages obtained by HuffPost confirm that Johnson and Ton-That were collaborating on far-right schemes in 2016; by early 2017 at the latest, they were in contact about scraping social media platforms for the facial recognition business.

Exactly. There are seats, and then there is sports ball space on the floor. Sports ball space is where Drumpf wants them packed in like sardines. It’s where people who follow him across the country in RV’s congregate. Lotsa “Fuck Your Feelings!” and “Lock Her Up!” t-shirts down there. First in line. His loudest fans. The biggest roars. AMD the team that does will sell so many shirts they’ll be able to buy a new stadium.

But they’ll use the money to lobby for a state or city funded stadium instead.

New: A federal judge in Alabama has blocked certain state voting restrictions (incl. witness/photo ID requirements for absentee ballots) for a runoff election next month, citing COVID-19 risks

Remember that that is a Republican-only primary runoff. We’ll see how the general is handled in Nov.

The Alabama League of Women Voters and ACLU have lawsuits active to force easing of tight absentee voting rules.

If a team does sign him, the screeching from the wingnuts will be audible on Mars.

There was a minor rumor that the Eagles might look at Kapernick a while back when they were having QB problems. I remember thinking there’s no way anyone could ever take that seriously. I’ve been to enough Eagles games over the decades to see the fans up close and personal.

Let’s just say a black man protesting police brutality by kneeling during the National Anthem would not go over well with that particular slice of Philly.

Don’t forget we’ll get the usual wingnut “boycott” where they buy up a bunch of the jerseys to burn and claim that that will “hurt” the team.

As Jacqueline suggests on Kimmy Schmidt (Season 3 Episode 10)

To the owners, every $250 jersey the protesters burn is just more cash to line their pockets. So Jacqueline’s solution is simple: Change all the team names to offensive monikers, from the Kansas City Islams to the Jacksonville Hillarys, and rake in the cash from an America that’s “angry about everything.” It’s a sharp take on both the greed of the real-life league (which is actually facing declining viewership, sinking ad revenue, and Kaepernick’s jersey selling well) and on a larger corporate culture that’s happy to sow division if it’s good for the bottom line. The Washington Gun-Takers may be a comic creation, but they’re not too far off from our current politics-as-sport reality, from which massive corporations are all too happy to profit.

I have no idea what that’s supposed to trigger.

Isn’t Ben Shapiro mocking those who voted for Trump and believed that Gorsuch was the reward? And, instead, Gorsuch, for once in his life, voted to support rights for those who were not white conservatives. So Gorsuch betrayed these white conservatives.

I assume that these GOP justices will quickly regain their conservative creds when they vote to conceal Trump’s records from the authorities because, as President, he is above the law.

I’m not as supportive of the notion of abandoning the filibuster, especially given that means there is no check on a 51 vote majority representing less than 20% of the population. There is something toxic about the Senate and its 2 votes per state, regardless of the population of the state. I do support returning to the old rules requiring Senators to actually speak on the floor to maintain the filibuster. The Senate strikes me as a fatal flaw in the structure of our government.

The state has not updated its so-called dashboard either.

For Wyoming (the state only gives demographic data on those who have a positive test):
health.wyo.gov

Lab confirmed + probable: 1,079 (+19)
Doubled since May 14 (accellerating)
Most by age: 19-29, then 40-49
By ethnic group: White (49.5% of lab confirmed), then Native American (31.4%)
Tested positive and hospitalised: 11.1% (may be incomplete)
Contracted from a known case: 49.9%
New tests: -459 (???)
Recovered: 838
Deaths: 18 (no change since June 9)

Kim Jong-un’s sister, Kim Yo-jong, threatened to “collapse” (IOW, demolish) the building the other day. Looks like she’s followed through on that.

So…..who’s running North Korea? Kim Jong-un - or Kim Yo-jong? I have a difficult time imagining that Kim Yo-jong could simply issue an order to demolish that building without Kim Jong-un’s permission. The only way she could do this is if Kim Jong-un is utterly incapacitated - or dead - and she’s taking over as North Korea’s Supreme Leader.

I would expect that we’d soon see some kind of press conference or national address from Kim Jong-un in light of this event. If he’s still among the living and reasonably healthy, that is.

In a new trial there are hints, but no proof, that a wriggling intestinal parasite might help fight multiple sclerosis.

The lowly hookworm has for years been proposed as a potential treatment for multiple sclerosis, or MS, and other autoimmune disorders.

But the first clinical trial testing the potential benefits of the parasite against MS has produced decidedly mixed results, according to the report published online June 15 in JAMA Neurology.

Hookworm treatment did not cause any decrease in the brain lesions associated with MS, compared with patients who received a placebo, the findings showed.
RELATED Mindfulness may ease the emotional burden of MS

However, “there were some hints of a potential beneficial effect,” said researcher Dr. Cris Constantinescu, a professor of clinical neuroscience at the University of Nottingham in the United Kingdom.

The group treated with hookworm experienced an increase in T regulatory cells, which balance the immune system and prevent autoimmune diseases, the researchers said.

“The immune response went in the direction that is good for MS treatment,” Constantinescu said. “A larger trial would be needed, perhaps of a longer duration. Higher doses may have a more pronounced effect.”

Shea told reporters Monday during a press conference that effective immediately roughly 600 officers from those units will be transitioned to other departments in an effort to update the force for modern policing, describing the move as a substantial cultural change to foster trust with the community.

Remember back around Mar-Apr, when the wingnuts were like “We can’t keep the economy closed forever, so we have to make peace with people dying!” And how folks responded with horror and called them “ghouls,” “monsters,” and other names for even thinking the public would be okay with people dying in order to maintain public health and security?

Yeah, I think we can say with confidence that they won that argument. When it comes to a choice between people dying and summer vacations, we’re willing to sacrifice grandma to get a tan.

“People die of poverty!” is a common counter argument.

Which is not quite the case,: they die from lack of proper nutrition, shelter and health care which are associated with poverty in our society. But that is as much a matter of political and moral choice as an economic inevitability.

By the way did anyone in the European contingent of LGF leave a package behind on a Swiss train? They are looking to return it to the owner.

Quote in article for the NYPD commissioner.

The Albuquerque Journal reports that the shooting occurred as a man in a blue shirt was pushed onto the street and protesters began advancing toward him. First, he pulled a can of pepper spray from his pocket and sprayed it and then appeared to pull a gun and fired five shots, the newspaper said. “The man who was shot appeared to have been one of the individuals advancing on the man in the blue shirt,” the paper said.

In the trial, led by a team from Oxford University, around 2,000 hospital patients were given dexamethasone and were compared with more than 4,000 who did not receive the drug.

For patients on ventilators, it cut the risk of death from 40% to 28%. For patients needing oxygen, it cut the risk of death from 25% to 20%.
Lead researcher Prof Martin Landray says the findings suggest that for every eight patients treated on ventilators, you could save one life.

For those patients treated with oxygen, you save one life for approximately every 20-25 treated with the drug.

I’d also go out on a limb here and say that most fast food and retail businesses these days have security cameras not just watching customers but the employees as well. So maybe, and this is a maybe here, the police saw the video of the employee making the shakes or drinks and found nothing wrong.

The possibility also exists that something was being cleaned nearby with bleach (and the stuff for industrial use is much stronger than the household stuff we buy) and that overwhelmed the smell and taste senses and they thought it was their food. Which is dumb and panicky but here we are.

Yeah, not that impressive. Sure, if you’re one of the small group who were saved with the drug you’ll be grateful.

But while there appears to be several thousands patients in the study, the reported improvement are “statistically significant” as by the standards of such medical tests, yet the significance is not that impressive according to the standards used in other sciences. There’s still a not-unreasonable chance that the difference between the drug-takers and the placebo group is simply a random fluctuation.

538’s polling average had Donny down to 40.8% approval, which is roughly where he was last October. For those who many not remember those ancient times, that was the period where he was getting his ass kicked in the polls for stonewalling the House’s Ukraine investigation as they were beginning to hit pay dirt.

And it’s also less than a point away from his next most recent low mark, namely the shellacking he took in the press last January for the post-midterm government shutdown where he tried to leverage power he totally lacked against a House leadership that saw he was only hurting himself.

And it’s also less than a point away from his next most recent low mark, namely the shellacking he took in the press last January for the post-midterm government shutdown where he tried to leverage power he totally lacked against a House leadership that saw he was only hurting himself.

So basically, he’ll rebound when the masses forgets his blunders, awaiting his next disaster…

It’s certainly possible that Donny could find a way to A) deal with the outbreak in a way that slows or stops the current wave of new infections, B) address the economic crater in such a way that he erases all the job losses and gets us back to where we were in Feb, and C) push police reform in such a fashion that it satisfies both sides of the issue.

It’s also possible that Somalia announces tomorrow to have not only discovered a commercially-viable means of fusion energy, but is prepared to share the knowledge with the entire globe for no cost whatsoever. It’s exceedingly unlikely, but it could happen.

In a trial like this, I doubt they selected a placebo group because we already have a group of people that didn’t take it: Those who were infected before the trials began. What they will do is carefully, but randomly select from those who have been infected so that the group represents the population at large.

This is true for any medical study; they don’t know whether the alternative improves outcomes or worsens outcomes. There is no other way to determine whether the new treatment is an improvement. The rule is “First, do no harm”. It’s not as though they were providing no treatment to the patients getting the placebo — they were providing the standard treatment and the trial was designed to determine when the alternative was better. They were not trying to harm anyone.

In a properly done study, even the doctors don’t know who is getting the medication under test and who isn’t. This reduces any bias in the study, to help ensure that the medication is the primary variable.

As already noted, before the study you can’t tell if the medication will help, harm or have no affect. So there is risk if you are in the study group.

There have been cases where a trial medication clearly makes a significant positive difference and the trial is stopped and all patients given the medication.

There are also cases where the trial medication doesn’t help and in fact may hurt the patients. See hydroxycloroquine…

Bottom line: without blind studies, how can you tell if the meds hurt or help?

Edit to fix typo

I just can’t wrap my head around people who are likely to die being given a placebo. We’re in extraordinary times.

Back when the first series of retroviral drugs were being tested for HIV patients there was a great outcry about offering some sufferers a placebo. A black market developed where some folks in the trials swapped drugs around to get at least some of the “good stuff” but not enough to make a real difference, compared samples etc. and this fucked up the testing so much it took years before a reliable TESTED drug regimen for HIV could be developed and prescribed to sufferers.

They’ve started doing human trials on vaccines without all the usual standards.

The standards are still being adhered to, the normal time intervals are being compressed and a lot of Stage 2 and Stage 3 planning is being done now rather than waiting for the results of the first limited tests to become available. It’s possible these early human vaccine trials will turn out to be:

A) Bad i.e. the prototype vaccine sickens or even kill people
B) Inconclusive i.e. the vaccine has no effect on the progression of the disease
C) The vaccine works! Yay!

Only in the last case does the planning, effort and expenditure of preparing for Stage 2 (testing on 100,000 people) and Stage 3 (starting mass manufacture of billions of doses) of any particular vaccine being developed pay off. Since this is a war then wasting a few billion dollars, even a few hundred billion on prepping for vaccines that don’t pan out is a fart in a hurricane, comparatively speaking.

Hell Governor Northam is probably tempermentally the most conservative Dem that we’ve elected since Warner but his agenda has been quite progressive. Why? We gave him a Dem majority in the legislature that Warner, Kaine, and McAuliffe never got. The thing that a lot of Democrats missed after electing Obama was preserving the majorities that were won in the state houses and in Congress in the years leading up to and after Obama won.

In case you were fretting that Trump might try to be president to all America:

Impeached president Donald Trump promised last week that he was going to do away with four centuries of American “bigotry and prejudice” in no time, that he’d take care of it “very quickly and very easily.” Easy peasy. On Tuesday he’s going to show us how with his new executive order on policing. The problem is, it doesn’t actually sound like he’s really got a problem with the “racism” part of the whole deal.

“The overall goal is we want law and order, and we want it done fairly, justly, we want it done safely,” Trump told reporters on Monday. “But we want law and order. It’s about law and order. But it’s about justice also, and it’s about safety.” Translation: It’s about making sure cops can still bash heads with impunity. He also told reporters that his props for this signing will be law enforcement officers when he announces it, and that he took suggestions for the order from law enforcement agencies. So, yeah, racism over because it will be “very comprehensive.”

Winner Winner Chicken Dinner.

Pat Lynch and the PBA and the Detective’s Union rolled their jump to conclusions card directly to intentional felony assassination of a cop. They didn’t wait for an investigation, let alone outcome.

It’s all Lynch has ever done in his entire career. Any action by a cop is automatically excused and any action against a cop is automatically assumed and treated as an attempted assassination.

There’s no retraction of their online statements, and no apologies to Shake Shack. It’s as though we’re supposed to ignore that the first move by the union is to assume intentional actions. And it encourages the rank and file to think that people are an enemy of the cops. It’s all about the mindset of the union and the rank and file. They assume any action is felony conduct against a cop.

Not start production; building the factories. So production can start immediately when they know which one. Because each of the candidate vaccines, if chosen, will require a factory with specific unique configuration, so they’re preparing for all the possibilities.

I meant it to be inflammatory. This study was done on people who are very sick… Like close to death sick. It’s incomprehensible to allow some to randomly die if they might have been saved.

On the other hand, the stuff might have made things worse, they didn’t know. That’s why there are blind trials.

re: #326 retired cynic

Gates only said he (meaning the Gates Foundation, I expect) was going to fund about half a dozen production facilities, that’s hardware, consumables, technicians, working spaces etc. based on preliminary results, even before initial human testing began. That’s different to actually developing a proven working vaccine.

Normally new vaccine development goes through a number of carefully graduated steps (computer analysis, in-vitro, animal tests, initial human tests, mass human tests, carefully monitored release to consumers) with each test gapped by a months-long review and analysis process before moving on to the next step if it is deemed appropriate — having some or all the test subjects turn blue and explode usually means the next stage is not progressed with. For COVID-19 vaccine a lot of corners are being cut, a lot of the fat in terms of time trimmed out. This may be a bad thing, it may cause real problems which in hindsight we should have avoided since those reviews and analyses are deemed to be important in normal circumstances but we can’t wait.

re: #330 sagehen

Not start production; building the factories. So production can start immediately when they know which one. Because each of the candidate vaccines, if chosen, will require a factory with specific unique configuration, so they’re preparing for all the possibilities.

I bet there are ways to maximize utility, modular construction and such. There must be commonalities among the range of possible configurations. I think it would be an interesting study.

re: #335 jeffreyw

There are reportedly over a hundred different vaccine development programs being carried out around the world, using at least half a dozen approaches — RNA, viral capsule protein coating sensitivity, attenuated virus, inactivated virus etc. These different types of candidate vaccines each need very different equipment, feedstocks, handling and processing machinery, packaging lines and so on.

A specific vaccine type such as inactivated virus might well be able to share common hardware for several different possible vaccines but we don’t know which KIND of vaccine will be the first to reach full-scale production, at least not yet. That’s why building all the factories now, basically one for each type of possible vaccine is considered a good idea. Once the bugs are worked out we can build a lot more of the right kind of factory.

Longer term, SARS-CoV-2 is not going away. The first vaccine(s) are likely to be less effective than the followup vaccines we’ll develop over the next five to ten years — they’ll provide higher levels of protection, their protection will last longer than the first lifebelt vaccines we hope to see rolled out to the general public early next year.

If she doesn’t have a role in Biden’s administration. I want Val Demings to run against the original water weirdo. Ditto Mayor Bottoms in Georgia. Not sure who else is up in 2022. Neither of my Senators are up that year. Warner is up this year and Kaine just won re-election wto years ago.

Barr is up in NC, and that could be a Democratic pickup. Lisa Murkowski in Alaska. Pat Toomey in PA. Ron Johnson in WI. Rob Portman in OH. If you want to dream bigger, Roy Blunt in MO and Jerry Moran in KS.

Democrats will have to defend their two pickups from 2016, Tammy Duckworth in IL and Maggie Hassan in NH. One of those will be easy…

Oh, and Arizona will be in play again - whoever wins the Kelly-McSally special this year gets to run again for the full term in 2022.

Yes. It makes good sense to take the shotgun approach to this virus, given that it has been identified and sequenced. I was musing about preparing for the next pandemic, studying engineering solutions, identifying commonalities, researching production techniques, adapting known processes. All of this is fertile ground.

And the (D) seats seem to be mainly in reasonably secure “blue” states. If anyone cares, here’s the full list, with current incumbents:

REPUBLICANS:
AL - Shelby AK - Murkowski AZ* - (inc) AR - Boozman
FL - Rubio GA-B* (inc) ID - Crapo IN - Young
IA - Grassley KS - Moran KY - Paul LA - Kennedy
MO - Blunt NC - Burr ND - Hoeven OH - Portman
OK - Lankford PA - Toomey SC - Scott SD - Thune
UT - Lee WI - Johnson

DEMOCRATS:
CA - Harris CO - Bennet CT- Blumenthal HI - SChatz
IL - Duckworth MD - Van Hollen NV - Cortez Masto
NH - Hassan NY - Schumer OR - Wyden VT - Leahy
WA - Murray

* GA - B and AZ incumbents will be winners of Specials this year.

Some races are going to be hopeless, of course, but a popular Admin and decent campaigning could probably flip a couple more seats.

Or it is the anti civil rights issue of all time. He can’t remember, doesn’t care.

re: #375 A Mom Anon

You would think that cops and their unions would stand up more to demand demilitarizing the stupid general public. This crap makes their job more difficult, whether some will admit it or not. The police could do more to help with this issue, is there a reason they can’t legally?

Not “legally”, I’m guessing; probably more “culturally”. Used to be (not all THAT long ago) that police organizations tended to be in the forefront of those lobbying for sensible gun-control measures (quite understandably, since they’re the ones who will be dealing with the consequences of a “militarized” Stupid General Public) - but I think those days are gone. Of course, not ALL cops are bigoted RW gun-nut/militia types: but I think enough of them (particularly outside the big cities) are -or know someone who is (likely in their own families) - that it’s going to permeate the culture of the Blue Tribe. No one is going to benefit by overtly pushing for “gun control”*; nor likely to want to jeopardize the bonanza of expensive bang-bang toys the Federal government showers on their departments.

*”gun control” as interpreted via RW dogma as “unconstitutional disarmament of white people via forcible involuntary confiscation” - the only permissible interpretation.

Neither did the judges when the original ruling came down.

Who’s the Mengele who determines who gets the real stuff vs the placebo? I can’t wrap my head around studies like this.

It’s done by computer and the clinicians never see the list. Only the architects of the study, the governing IRB and the project biostatisticians get to break the veil and see exactly who was on what. With the percentage who die in a ventilator already so high the barrier for initial IRB approval is going to be a lot lower.

I grew up a mile from a shopping center. We’d take shortcuts to get through the neighborhood all the time. I don’t think the cops ever so much as gave us a warning let alone pulled a gun.

No quarter. A squeaker will not be good enough. Utter electoral annihlation is the only remedy. Banishment to backwoods to dance with their snakes and play with their guns. Complete removal from all levers of power.

re: #374 Belafon

There were some twitter threads a couple days ago about what happens to cops that report corruption. Most police departments don’t get rid of the bad ones, they torture the good ones into submission.

His EO is meaningless since the federal government doesn’t have much control over local forces. And if he withholds military equipment, good.

‘calling, advocating, encouraging’
meaningless bullshit unless there’s funding
so you drop it in congress’s lap?

you had no problem finding funds for wall building

School choice” is a dog whistle for all those whites-only “Christian” schools that sprouted after public schools became integrated in the ‘50’s and ‘60’s. Black students are generally not accepted by those schools except for a handful of “tokens.”

…for funneling taxpayer $ to all those whites-only….

A new Public Policy Polling survey in Georgia:

Joe Biden leading Donald Trump in the presidential race, 48% to 46%.

In the U.S. Senate race, Jon Ossof (D) barely leads Sen. David Perdue (R), 45% to 44%
