On schools, we are the only country attempting to open schools while the pandemic is raging. Even with countries that have it largely under control, common requirements for re-opening include smaller class sizes, staggered drop offs, spacing, mandatory hand washing, and some level of mask usage. We are, of course, largely doing none of those things.

We are, of course, largely doing none of those things.

Which is a point that McEnany specifically lied about in her “The science should not stand in the way” response:

The president has said unmistakably that he wants schools to open. And I was just in the Oval talking to him about that. And when he says open, he means open and full, kids being able to attend each and every day at their school. The science should not stand in the way of this. And as Dr. Scott Atlas said, I thought this was a good quote. Of course, we can do it. Everyone else in the Western world, our peer nations are doing it. We are the outlier here.

When haven’t conservatives been violent? They blow up abortion clinics and federal buildings. They revolted in a civil war, they fought for the crown, they joined Nazi organisations in the Thirties and the Klan in the Twenties. Wallace’s youth group became the best-financed and most dangerous Nazi organisation in the country (the National Alliance). Their Websites now are tied to scores of murders and beatings.

Conservatives being violent is a day ending in -day.

O’Shea said he ran when he saw people wearing camouflage jump out of an unmarked vehicle. He said he hid when a second unmarked van pursued him.”

Another Eric Boehlert (who is, IMO, excellent): NY Times’ comical attempt to fact check Biden in the age of Trump lies

Biden’s claim that Trump hasn’t provided a “uniform plan and guidance” for the pandemic is spot-on accurate. For the Times call it an “exaggeration” and “inaccurate” is absurd. It’s even more dangerous for the Times to hold up its fact checks and pretend Biden and Trump have similar trouble telling the truth.

News from this neck of the woods, Governor Polis has just (finally) issued a statewide mask order for Colorado. He specifies that cities/counties/etc can require stricter rules, but provides the baseline for the whole state.

Today, I announced that a statewide mask requirement will go into effect at midnight tonight, mandating that every Coloradan older than 10 wear a mask or a face cover in all indoor public spaces, unless that individual has a medical condition where wearing a mask would put them at risk.
….
The ordinance I signed today mandates mask-wearing for those older than 10 in all indoor public spaces. This includes using or waiting for any form of public transportation, a taxi service, car service, or ride-sharing service.
….
Furthermore, businesses are now required to post signage mandating mask-wearing, and must refuse entry or service to people not wearing masks or face covers. To put it simply: no mask, no service.

There are, of course, some common sense exceptions to the mandate, including:

Eating at a food service establishment
Exercising alone
Receiving a service where the mask would interfere with the service like a facial or a beard trimming
Public safety personnel such as law enforcement, firefighters, or EMTs
Religious officiants
Speaking to a televised audience
Having to remove your mask for purposes of identification

This is a relief. The local Tri-County health dept. issued a mask order effective July 24th but allowed cities to opt-out if they chose. Apparently there were five votes on Centennial’s city council who were likely to vote for that, so we’ve been calling reps and sending emails to urge common flippin’ sense.

As the Gov points out, we’re seeing a steady rise in cases that looks like the pattern some of the neighboring states saw shortly before they exploded. Would be nice if we could short-circuit that, please.

Bordering the Nebraska Panhandle, Weld County, Colorado is raging out of control.

weldgov.com

Cases: 3,155 (+21 since yesterday)
Most by age: 20-29
Deaths: 91 (no change since June 27)
Most by age: 80-89
Most by Zip Code: Greeley (surpassed the rural area which had the most cases)

Putin has wanted revenge on the United States for the dissolution of the Soviet Union. Now, with his asset as President, he seems close to reaching this goal. What is going to happen when these jackbooted thugs start invading other cities throughout the country? I am confident that these policies were all hatched by the FSB and Trump, in his continuing efforts to distract from his total malfeasance in handling the pandemic, is promoting this new strategy to solidify his standing among his base and, as a byproduct, destroy our nation. Are we really going to be able to make it until the November elections? Will he not seize this opportunity to declare martial law?

Wyoming was bragging for a long time they only had seven deaths since April 23. That is rapidly growing; since then it’s risen to twenty-four.

Likewise cases: On April 23 they had 326 cases; now they have 2,026.

On July 1, South Dakota had 93 deaths. Today the number is 115.

Our little sliver of land is surrounded by idiots.

Of course there will be wingnut doctors and armed protestors and the inevitable screeches of ma freedumbs. But more people will go along with it, and all we can do is try to engrain the habits. A single standard removes the excuse of “I forgot ___ city/suburb requires masks because ___ a mile away doesn’t and how are we supposed to remember?”

Donors are refusing to pony up for a second convention after plowing money into NC, delegates are coming up with excuses for why they can’t attend, they’re trying to move things outside due to fear they won’t be able to fill the intended arena, and all this is assuming that Donny won’t change his mind again.

And another Republican off to jail. She was convicted earlier in the month.

TORRINGTON [Wyo.]— A former Goshen County Court Clerk was sentenced to three to six years in prison on Thursday. Some family members and friends say imprisonment will be a “death sentence” for the woman.

In June, Kathi Rickard pled [sic] guilty to two felony charges of theft related to a 2019 investigation that revealed she had embezzled $125,400.15 from Wyoming’s Eighth Judicial District Court.

The judge presiding over the case was the Honorable Judge Scott Peasly of Converse County.

The investigation began when then-Deputy District Court Clerk Brandi Correa notified Goshen County Attorney Eric Boyer that she had received notices about checks bouncing due to insufficient funds. The money was missing from bank accounts that Rickard had administered and maintained.

Not a classroom, a 10,000 square foot room, with 145 people sitting the exam. Allegedly there will be six feet space between the examinees. But we know that’s not the problem. The problem is being in a room for two separate days with air circulating. It’s the same problem my room at work has.

omaha.com

Arizona is also forcing people to take the bar as well. Texas at least cancelled the bar and is rescheduling it. None of this is good. I’ve said this before, but if I was less than two weeks from the bar exam and having this hang over my head, I would be completely losing my shit. (Actually, I’m wondering how I managed to get through law school and the bar. I don’t want to say it was the drinking, but I think it might have been the drinking.)

ETA: I’m thinking that we in Arizona might have evidence of a spike in COVID cases by August 17, which is when Gov. Doug Ducey (R-completely up Trump’s backside) wants to reopen the schools. That’s more than two weeks after the bar exam, you know, in a big room with a lot of people for two days…

That’d certainly work as well. Anymouse here’s a link!

rawstory.com

On Thursday, The Daily Beast examined “Patriots’ Soapbox,” a YouTube channel popular among the QAnon community, to reach out to conspiracy theorists for votes.

“The channel, which has nearly 80,000 YouTube subscribers and a popular Discord chat server, has been one of the most vocal QAnon outlets since the conspiracy theory began with a series of anonymous clues posted by a mysterious ‘Q’ in October 2017,” reported Will Sommer. “One of Patriots’ Soapbox founders, Coleman Rogers, who goes by the handle ‘Pamphlet Anon,’ is so involved in the beginnings of QAnon that rival conspiracy theorists have accused him of being Q himself, a charge Rogers denies.”

Daily Beast Link:

thedailybeast.com

Patriots’ Soapbox is a 24-hour, 7-days-a-week full-face dive into the heart of QAnon. It is the hub of a devoted community of tens of thousands of QAnon believers eager to share the off-the-wall ideas with each other. The various “shows” running on Patriots’ Soapbox often open with a Q-themed song like the Western-style “When Q Came to Town,” before launching into fevered dissections of QAnon clues and interpretation of current events through a QAnon lens.

Visually, Patriots’ Soapbox’s constant livestream looks like nothing else on YouTube. Other conspiracy theorists on the platform, like the producers of the slickly produced coronavirus conspiracy theory video “Plandemic,” rely on high production values to win new adherents to their ludicrous beliefs. But Patriots’ Soapbox relishes getting into the byzantine details of QAnon, with hosts sharing their screens to the audience as they flick between QAnon clues, tweets, and articles they claim prove the ultimate conspiracy.
