… While the Vietnam War was raging and civil unrest was convulsing American cities, TV talk show host Johnny Carson did something special: He stepped away from “The Tonight Show” perch for a week.

Then something even more special happened: Belafonte took over.

For five nights, the Black singer, actor and activist entertained white middle America with his cool wit and an astonishing array of guests — the Rev. Martin Luther King Jr., Sidney Poitier, Robert F. Kennedy, Paul Newman, Dionne Warwick, Aretha Franklin, Petula Clark, Bill Cosby, Diahann Carroll and Lena Horne, among others.

That fascinating week of late night is the subject of the new Peacock documentary “The Sit-In,” which airs Thursday and celebrates Belafonte’s strategic and profound mix of art and politics…

In addition to his high-powered guests, Belafonte showed home movies of his family water-skiing and boating — conscious efforts to connect with his white audience.

Democrats are amassing an enormous lead in early voting, alarming Republicans who worry they’ll need to orchestrate a huge Election Day turnout during a deadly coronavirus outbreak to answer the surge.

The Democratic dominance spreads across an array of battleground states, according to absentee ballot request data compiled by state election authorities and analyzed by Democratic and Republican data experts. In North Carolina and Pennsylvania, Democrats have a roughly 3-to-1 advantage over Republicans in absentee ballot requests. In Florida — a must-win for President Donald Trump — the Democratic lead stands at more than 700,000 ballot requests, while the party also leads in New Hampshire, Ohio and Iowa.

Even more concerning for Republicans, Democrats who didn’t vote in 2016 are requesting 2020 ballots at higher rates than their GOP counterparts. The most striking example is Pennsylvania, where nearly 175,000 Democrats who sat out the last race have requested ballots, more than double the number of Republicans, according to an analysis of voter rolls by the Democratic firm TargetSmart.

They also note that while Trump has repeatedly bashed mail-in voting — virtually ensuring that most of his supporters cast ballots in-person on Election Day — Democrats are placing a heavy emphasis on it. An NBC News/Wall Street Journal poll released last month showed that nearly half of Biden’s supporters planned to vote by mail, compared with just about one-tenth of Trump supporters.

I do wish Democrats were going to vote in person more, especially with early voting. But then again, I wonder what the numbers look like if you take out California.

Trump wants respect, but has been denied that by New York society due to a pre-existing condition: terminal buffoonery. He thought being president would force that respect, but since respect is earned, it’s a Sisyphean task.

Laughing at him and denigrating him, especially in the face of his threats, is likely an effective tactic. And there’s the added benefit of the catharsis in doing so.

As a malignant narcissist, Trump will refuse responsibility for anything bad and will lie, rewrite history and find ways to blame others for his mistakes. Hammering the long list of his mistakes and failures will certainly generate narcissistic injury; his response will be to lash out and lose control. This is another effective tactic.

There are a number of tactics that can be used against the pimple of a president. Especially if his primary strategy is selling fear and hate. I’d focus on tactics that force PimpleOTUS to respond, since his mouth is quickly becoming his worst enemy.

The Trumps have been seeking the approval of NY high society for ages and have never found it because their family history is well known: A fortune built upon pimping, profiteering, and being slum lords. And the revelation in the past few years that much of their money comes from tax fraud only deepened the divide. Wealth can’t buy class and it’s something that the family has never managed to attain, despite all their efforts to the contrary. The unwashed masses may be impressed by dressing up apartments like French brothels and covering themselves in expensive gems, but their peers see through it to the rotten, bitter souls that lie underneath.

Trump’s most reliable federal goons, ICE and BoP, need to think long and hard about what will happen to them if they support an illegal Trump power grab and it fails. A martial law declaration would be useless to them because the military chiefs have made it clear that they want no part of it. That leaves Cheeto with spotty support from local police and, of course, his numerous but cowardly and inept private militia supporters.
In fact, martial law could backfire epically if the chiefs back the incoming legal government and use Trump’s own proclamation to round up or eradicate his goober militia and rogue cops.

They want no part of it, but after war criminals like Gallagher getting pardons, I don’ think we can dismiss entirely the possibility that one or more officers may decide to throw their lot in with Trump on the belief that when the dust settles, they’ll be regarded as “heroes” and cleared of their crimes. Or Trump’s appointed flunkies in the DoD bypasses the chiefs to give direct orders to military units, figuring that enough of them will obey those orders to do some real damage.

Trump set up residency in Florida for a reason. First, to protect at least Mar-a-Lago in the event of a bankruptcy. Second, if NY issued an arrest warrant, he could (and likely would) try to fight extradition back to NY from Florida. Not saying that second strategy would necessarily work, but to Trump’s thinking, it sounds good.

The data is from 2019, when UE was indeed under 4%. However, even basic back of the envelope math shows that this is a tempest in a teapot. They’re alleging that roughly $346 million came from 4.7 million individual donors that put themselves down as “no employer/unemployed” and there’s no way so many unemployed people could have had money to donate such large amounts to ActBlue.

That math bit I talked about? $346 / 4.7 works out to roughly $73.61 per donor. I think I got about that much in my piggy bank at home.

Biden endorses Eastman in Omaha area House race; Trump backs Bacon (Omaha World-Herald)

Democrat Kara Eastman has secured the backing of her party’s presidential nominee in her race against Republican Rep. Don Bacon.

Former Vice President Joe Biden made it official Saturday, endorsing Eastman in Nebraska’s most competitive House race.

“Nebraskans face a choice between Eastman — an advocate for working families — and Rep. Don Bacon — who supports Republicans’ attempts to overturn the Affordable Care Act,” Biden said.

Bacon has had President Donald Trump in his corner since March. In recent weeks, the Trump campaign has sent surrogates to the Omaha area’s 2nd Congressional District, including second lady Karen Pence, to boost Bacon and stump for Trump.

The Trumps have been seeking the approval of NY high society for ages and have never found it because their family history is well known: A fortune built upon pimping, profiteering, and being slum lords.

He could have overcome that; we’re not French or British, 2nd generation gets an almost clean slate from their dad’s reputation. But Donald…

His first foray into Manhattan, building the tower that bears his name, on the site of Bonwit Teller…

Bonwit Teller was a classic NYC institution, the building dated from 1929

All in all, it was a grand building. Vogue called it a “convincing demonstration of the aesthetic possibilities of functionalism.” American Architect compared the entryway to “a sparkling jewel in keeping with the character of the store.” Times columnist Walter Rendell Story said it “epitomized what might be termed a classic expression of metropolitan architecture.” On October 16th, 1929, Stewart & Company threw open their doors with great fanfare and a gala luncheon attended by Police Commissioner Grover Whalen, architect Raymond Hood, and Eleanor Roosevelt.

secretsofmanhattan.wordpress.com

The original owners lost everything in the ‘29 crash, that’s how a department store came to own the building in the first place. But the grillwork on the ground floor, and the friezes up the sides, were Art Deco masterpieces. Among the world’s finest. And Trump promised to carefully preserve these pieces through a very careful demolition, and donate them to the Metropolitan Museum.

The Museum was excited as hell, anticipating the arrival of these works. They planned to renovate a whole wing to be able to display them properly. It was a big, big deal.

But Donald decided to save a few bucks by using jackhammers to remove the sculptures in the middle of the night and drop them 9 floors to the street, where of course they shattered. They took acetylene torches to the grillwork. He saved about ten thousand dollars by doing things this way, and everybody associated with the Met has hated him with passion ever since.

Significant Met donations are a measure of a wealthy New Yorker’s value to the city’s culture, and their standing in “society”. Among the biggest early donors were Cornelius Vanderbilt, JP Morgan, 3 generations of Rockefellers; more recent big donors include Robert Lehman (one of the brothers) and Leonard Lauder (a billion dollars worth of art). All the Wall Street bigshots donate six figures every year.

To piss off that list of people, just to save an amount less than any of them spent on their daughter’s prom dress, rates permanent banishment from any and all Society functions. Being President isn’t nearly important enough to overcome their disdain. The whole reason Melania cultivated Stephenie Winston Wolkoff as a friend was to get invited to the Met Gala… which Anna Wintour says Donald and Melania will ever be invited to again.

Having seen Trump in action the past few years, I imagine that the whole “carefully preserved” business was said when he thought he might be able to make some money off a “deal” with the Metropolitan Museum. But when he realized that they’d view it as a donation and he wouldn’t see a dollar for it, he decided that it was too much to “waste” on something he’d see no benefit from.

The buyer was none other than Donald Trump. In 1980, Trump demolished Warren & Westmore’s elegant Art Deco emporium to make way for his $100 million Trump Tower. In what became a sadly typical turn of events, Trump cut corners everywhere he could and bullied those who stood in his way. To pour the foundations, Trump enlisted S&A Concrete, a known mob front for Paul Castellano and “Fat Tony” Salerno.

Paul Castellano, for those unaware, was the head of the Gambino crime family, one of New York City’s “Five Families”. He was later killed by John Gotti in an unsanctioned assassination in front of Sparks Steak House, who took over the Gambino family.

Salerno was both an underboss and later, front boss, for the Genovese crime family.

Voters across Russia are casting their ballots in dozens of local elections that are seen as a big test for the ruling pro-Kremlin United Russia party.
Nearly 160,000 candidates are vying for seats in local parliaments. Governors are also being elected in many regions.
The polls come only weeks after the suspected poisoning of opposition leader Alexei Navalny with Novichok.
His team allege this was done on the orders of President Vladimir Putin - the Kremlin denies any involvement.

Well, it looks like I killed the thread tonight, so I guess I’ll go back to the 1897 arc on “Dark Shadows.” Angelique has been resurrected (again), this time by the duplicitous lawyer for Quentin, after Barnabas caught the gypsy Zardoz forging a fake will for the recently deceased mistress of Collinwood, Edith.

The proper will gives the entire estate to her daughter Judith, cutting out all the men from the will, but allows Quentin to stay on indefinitely.

Meanwhile, Angelique has already attacked the latest iteration of Josette Collins, the childrens’ governess Rachel, who looks amazingly like Maggie from the 1969 arc (because it’s the same actress, who is also the person in the portrait of Josette and played Josette in the 1795 arc).

It’s all quite confusing.

Meanwhile, the winter pause we had here is coming to an end, as the temperatures will go back to the mid-nineties by Tuesday. The furnace is on now, but the air conditioner will probably be back on tomorrow afternoon.

Oldest living US World War II veteran turns 111 (The Hill, more at the link)

The Defense Department on Saturday celebrated the 111th birthday of Lawrence Brooks, the oldest known living U.S. veteran from World War II.

“I salute your service and your lifetime of determination,” Defense Secretary Mark Esper wrote on Twitter.

Of the 16 million U.S. veterans who served, about 300,000 are still alive today, according to the Department of Veterans Affairs.

The Louisiana native was stationed with the Army as part of the predominately African American 91st Engineers Battalion in the Pacific Theater. He served in Australia, New Guinea and then the Philippines.

Brooks served before the military was formally desegregated in 1948 and spoke with National Geographic in May about the racism and hostility he faced in the service, 75 years after the end of the war.

Maintenance tractor catches fire at Florida’s Ben Hill Griffin Stadium, no structural damage at ‘The Swamp’ (CBS Sports)

It’s unclear if The Swamp will be ready for the home-opener on Oct. 3 vs. South Carolina

Florida announced on Saturday that a maintenance tractor caught fire inside Florida’s Ben Hill Griffin Stadium on Saturday afternoon, shooting black clouds of smoke high in the air over Gainesville. The fire occurred on the third floor of the building and nobody was injured, according to Claudia Bellofato of WCJB-TV in Gainesville. It was extinguished shortly after fire officials arrived and the damage to the stadium is not believed to be structural, according to Pete Thamel of Yahoo Sports.

It’s unclear what caused the tractor to catch fire or how long it burned before being put out.

Video of the fire was posted to Twitter.

Now that they’re personally affected. I suppose we should give them a cookie for figuring it out now.

Navy veteran: For 2 decades, VA never told him he had HIV (Navy Times)

He’s entered a federal lawsuit against the Veterans Administration.

A U.S. Navy veteran says that, for more than two decades, he had no idea he was living with the virus that causes AIDS because government health care workers never informed him of his positive test result in the mid-1990s.

In a federal lawsuit filed this week, the South Carolina man says he ended up with “full-blown AIDS” because he never received treatment after being kept in the dark.

“The treatment he’s getting now is effective, but he’s had essentially 25 years of wear and tear for having no treatment,” said his lawyer, Chad McGowan. Conditions related to his unknown HIV status included an infection of his brain tissue, McGowan said.

“He feels extremely guilty about the girlfriends he’s had over the last 25 years because he didn’t know,” McGowan said.

Dakotas Lead US in Virus Growth as Both Reject Mask Rules (Voice of America)

SIOUX FALLS, SOUTH DAKOTA - Coronavirus infections in the Dakotas are growing faster than anywhere else in the nation, fueling impassioned debates over masks and personal freedom after months in which the two states avoided the worst of the pandemic.

The argument over masks raged this week in Brookings, South Dakota, as the city council considered requiring face coverings in businesses. The city was forced to move its meeting to a local arena to accommodate intense interest, with many citizens speaking against it, before the mask requirement ultimately passed.

Amid the brute force of the pandemic, health experts warn that the infections must be contained before care systems are overwhelmed. North Dakota and South Dakota lead the country in new cases per capita over the last two weeks, ranking first and second respectively, according to Johns Hopkins University researchers.

South Dakota has also posted some of the country’s highest positivity rates for COVID-19 tests in the last week — more than 17% — an indication that there are more infections than tests are catching.

Infections have been spurred by schools and universities reopening and mass gatherings like the Sturgis Motorcycle Rally, which drew hundreds of thousands of people from across the country.

Production of the holiday-shaped candies was suspended in the spring as the coronavirus spread across the state. Limited production resumed in mid-May with protocols in place to protect employees, Just Born said.

“This situation resulted in us having to make the difficult decision to forego production of our seasonal candies for Halloween, Christmas and Valentine’s Day in order to focus on meeting the expected overwhelming demand for Peeps for next Easter season, as well as our everyday candies,” the company said.

“Mike Bloomberg plans to spend at least $100 million in Florida to help elect Democrat Joe Biden, a massive late-stage infusion of cash that could reshape the presidential contest in a costly toss-up state central to President Trump’s reelection hopes,” the Washington Post reports.

“Bloomberg made the decision to focus his final election spending on Florida last week, after news reports that Trump had considered spending as much as $100 million of his own money in the final weeks of the campaign, Bloomberg’s advisers said. Presented with several options on how to make good on an earlier promise to help elect Biden, Bloomberg decided that a narrow focus on Florida was the best use of his money.”

Plus even if that “unemployed” donor figure was true (and the national figure of 4% is clearly not), that doesn’t mean a person can’t donate to a political candidate.

Martha McSally recently told people to skip a meal so they could donate to her. If the money is going to Republicans they don’t seem to mind people scrounging up a donation.

It’s Lebron James -

TampaBay: Lebron James to Help Florida Felons Regain Vote Right

Electoral Vote had a post about it, and also mentioned this possibility:

So far, the voting-rights groups that support reenfranchisement haven’t announced their next move. They could try to get judges in blue counties, like Miami-Dade, to order all fines and fees wiped out, something that has already happened with some voters.

Seems only fair if Republicans are also making it difficult for released felons to even know how much their fines are, let alone pay their fines.
As I see it, if Blue counties do decide to waive fees for residing released felons, it would basically force Red counties to do the same.

But don’t forget that majorities favor mask wearing — and 80-90% of people say they wear masks indoors if they can’t socially distance. Unfortunately, the number of people who do the same thing outdoors is just under half, so we need to point out that less dangerous doesn’t mean not dangerous, but clearly the message is spreading.

Over the last 50 years, the Republican Party has managed to mobilize flat-out evil into a political power base. When Trump is removed, he and his cronies must be punished of course, but it shouldn’t stop there. The base, the everyday, arrogant, murder-apologist brutes and hypocrites who have supported him, must be punished too. Obviously the Biden administration cannot do this overtly, but that does not mean it can’t be done. The best way is to cut the umbilical cord of incitement that feeds their hate addiction. Broadcast ownership restrictions and possibly even the fairness doctrine can be restored. Foreign agent registration violations can be pursued to exhaustion, and accomplices punished along with primacy offenders. Most importantly, though, the tax status of various religious fronts can be microscopically examined, exemptions revoked, and violations prosecuted where the law that is already on the books has been broken.

Y’know, maybe I’m misremembering things I read a few months back, but I could have sworn that it was reported that Durham had finished his “report”, and that the AG was just polishing the details before releasing it. And that said release was interpreted (incorrectly, of course) by the starboard claque to be leading to a raft of “indictments” - if not well-publicized trials and lengthy jail sentences - for all those miscreants involved in the “Crime of the Century” of “illegally” “spying” in the Trump 2016 campaign.

So the Durham Report ISN’T done yet?

Not surprising: the Trump gang doesn’t even seem to be competent at ginning up even fake, non-credible “scandals”: so I wonder how this latest iteration of the “October Surprise” is going to be received,

re: #205 Eclectic Cyborg

Oh, and about that BS about Joe Biden being “terrible to Hispanics”?
Perusing the Washington Post (alert: possible paywall issues), I saw they had a link to a Spanish-language ad (“Arroz”) his campaign put out reminded the listeners of Trump’s poor handling of hurricane and earthquake relief for Puerto Rico. Which I think will probably have more relevance to the Hispanic electorate than Bernie Sanders’ “influence”….
