#SongsOfComfort: Yo-Yo Ma and Angélique Kidjo, “Blewu”

Music • Views: 24,860

YouTube

I’m grateful not only for music’s comfort, but for its connections. I heard my friend Angélique Kidjo sing “Blewu” — a dirge for the dead and an anthem of thanks — almost two years ago, and it’s never left me. This is for those we have lost and for those who risk their lives so we don’t lose more.

“Blewu,” based on a traditional Ewe song, composed by Bella Bellow #songsofcomfort

This video was originally released on April 21, 2020, as part of Yo-Yo Ma’s #SongsOfComfort project, which was launched at the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic to provide comfort in a time of anxiety and fear. The project inspired thousands of people around the world to upload their own songs of comfort in the months that followed.

Sending comfort to all in LGF-land who need it today, especially Joe and companion… three weeks or so until our nightmare starts to abate.

Looking at this Rothkopf fluff and it’s tweet-spawn…well, it’s all bullshit because it refuses to acknowledge the material conditions that have led to the current day.

Almost all this “millenials are fucking up, X is to blame for why they suck” steps around the way that the entire world has been altered in the last three decades such that the kids can’t be alright.

I mean start with the obvious: stagnant wages while everything goes up in price, new logistics systems and automation transforming labor. But then…consider that a job is now an entirely different thing than it was in ascending generation: no fixed hours or schedule, no benefits, employment at will. The thing that was the beacon of normalcy in the USA—a 9 to 5 that lets you have your suburban life—just doesn’t exist the same way.

And that’s just the surface. I’d the deeper problem is that the generation doing the “those coddled kids” bit have destroyed—and if not destroyed outright, destroyed trust in—all the institutions that made society feel safe and stable. If you’re a millennial, you’ve lived through multiple financial disasters that were seeded by wild speculation and concluded with powerful people becoming even more wealthy (while the job market contracted, wages stayed flat, hours decreased, more stressful time-motion monitoring was implemented, etc). Most of their lives, there’s been a war, there’s no actual end to the war anticipated, and the complete inefficacy of that war is always visible because they’ve also grown up with constant, instant global news. The same is true of climate change—this is a generation watching their elders, who have the power and capital, construct excuses for why the future can be leveraged. To say nothing of the more direct and exploitative leveraging of the future, that the kids are saddled by debt that they took because they were told it was a necessary part of buying into the system…only to have it turn out that the terms were bad, and the people who gave them the advice were acting in bad faith. And this year both BLM and coronavirus have demonstrated even more graphically that they don’t matter, compared to abstractions such as “law and order” and “the stock market.”

I don’t think the last couple of years of uncovering sex crimes and eploitation has helped the situation much, either. Even though some of those stories extend back to the 70s, they establish that there’s another, un-illuminated side to how the ascendant Boomer generation has consumed the younger people. I’m a 90s kid and I can remember when this participation trophy/too much feelings/political correctness thing was being used to scoff at the idea that rapey, coercive sexual behavior was a normal thing men do, and that’s carried through to this day.

The kids aren’t just stressed out and angry because they’re not materially making it, but because there’s every indication that they don’t matter to the people who have the money, the power, and cultural cachet that maintain the status quo. Mass death is okay…be it from corona or forever wars or climate disaster…as long as the bank account numbers of the old, richer people gets higher. They’re accurately assessing that their lives are devalued, and that they are being treated as means to venal and hedonistic ends.

But the other half of this is…all of these crusty “the wokeness and the delicacy of these kids is ruining everything” takes are flatulent acts of self-justification. The people who made all the stupid decisions, cruel decisions, and self-indulgent decisions that created the current terrible state of play are now covering up what they did. Almost everything they accuse the young of—participation trophies, unearned entitlement, whininess—are things they indulge in…but beneath that superficial projection they’re refusing to acknowledge the dark, fucked-up stuff they’ve been party to.

My daughters all left today, two back to Lille, France where the oldest (22) is studying and the youngest (16) has moved to get away from her mother (long story)

Middle daughter (18) has taken up a job as a live-in caregiver with an elderly woman (mother of a bandmate of mine) in a village not too far away (about 35 minutes’ drive) and returned there today as well.

Just me and my son (14) now, just watched 1917 on video, now moving on to El Camino

A PSA brought up from the last thread:

re: #103 PhillyPretzel

OT It has been over a month since I worked the polls on Election Day and I finally got paid. It was a little more than what I was told I would get. The only problem is that now I have a check that must be deposited into my account. I will try to contact my credit union sometime today or tomorrow morning. In April of 2021 I will ask if they can go for direct deposit. It will much easier during this time of COVID-19.

re: #185 FFL (GOP Delenda Est)

Does your credit union have an (convenient to reach) ATM that can take deposits?

My local bank branch is closed, but their ATM is available and I was able to deposit a few checks there a couple of months back.

A tip for those who bank with a credit union: if your CU is a CO-OP Network member, you have access to branch banking at participating CUs and to no-fee ATMs nationwide.

“We’re starving”. Americans brace for even harder times as Covid unemployment relief ends.

I only have $100 left to my name,” said Jo Marie Hernandez, USA Today reported. “My whole world is shattered. We can’t wait a few weeks for help. We’re starving and will be out on the street soon.”

The 32-year-old from Olean, New York, lost her job at a gas station in the spring and has been forced to put her car up for sale to raise money.

“I’m asking to be able to keep my apartment,” said Stephanie Lott, 30, The Washington Post reported. “To be able to live, and not live on the street. I’m not asking to be put in a golden apartment or anything. I just want to be able to live.”

What I’m saying is:

George W Bush and his flunkies decided “we create our own reality” and downstream of that is several million dead people.

This kind of unreality is apparently acceptable.

The concept that there is a “West” such that modern Americans who do not personally understand science, or the philosophy of the Enlightenment that supposedly forms the basis of our ethics and governance, can claim to be the successors of the individuals who created and implemented those ideas.

This kind of participation trophy is apparently acceptable.

Moral failures—such as segregation and the various sex abuse coverups—and practical failures—such as most US foreign policy and wars, neoliberalism, etc—are not indicative that back in the 70s/80s/90s/00s the fully adult people with money, power, and education were wrong, or stupid, or immoral…they were doing their best and deserve credit (all the credit, in their own accounting).

This kind of “but we tried, and trying is important” rhetoric is apparently acceptable.

I often observe that the US “right” is a series of groups who overlap in that they all believe in a distinction: the hard rule for other people, mitigation and nuance for themselves. Many, many of these generational critiques are rooted in a similar self-serving horseshit.

At this point, British royalty should start embracing and celebrating depictions of diversity because the alternative is to contemplating several centuries of inbreeding.

Like the Sax-Coburg-Gotha line should just count their blessings that extinction of the German and Russian branches circa 1918 has greatly reduced the prominence of “oh shit, all these people look identical and have hemophilia and possibly brain issues.”

Interesting note is that the Catholic Church initally tried to make it a hard rule that any intending spouses should be at least 7 degrees apart in terms of consanguinity. But that got watered down to 4 or even less by the powers that be.
And we still live with the results…

I’ve said for a bit now that Trump doesn’t need to damage the country through willful action, he just needs to refuse to do his job and let the country fall apart in the last weeks out of sheer spitefulness. I never imagined that he would do that, not because he blamed the country for his loss, but because he wanted to make Repubs suffer for not agreeing to install him as a dictator.

The male-line Royals have spent time in uniform and quite often been on the front line for well over a century now. King George VI enlisted in the Royal Navy as a midshipman at age 13 and he was a turret officer on board HMS Collingwood in the Battle of Jutland in 1916. Prince Andrew flew helicopters during the Falklands War, acting as an anti-shipping missile decoy at times. Phil the Greek was in action during WWII in the Med in the Royal Navy, being mentioned in dispatches for his service on board the battleship HMS Valiant during the Battle of Cape Matapan (a night action, RN battleships with radar versus Italian heavy cruisers without radar. So one-sided it was almost embarrassing.)

Even Charlie reached the position of Captain of one of his Mum’s ships, a minesweeper, for a couple of years before he quit the Royal Navy to take up his Royal duties as Prince of Wales and heir.

The royals are a brand, and image maintenance is a necessary component of that brand. Looking and sounding good is the entire job, and he will look and sound good until the exact moment he doesn’t. His success is that he’s media savvy because he’s younger and understands virality and the smartphone panopticon, where as the ascending generation is still thinking in terms of impression management under the conditions of print media.

Until further notice, that makes him Kim Kardashian: intelligently cultivating a personal image. The monetization scheme is just different: the latter has to be a mix of accessible and scandalous to sell stuff; the former has to be authentic and milquetoast but regal, so that people don’t start asking questions all that real estate the royals tie up.

But the fact that he’s doing the thing well does not change that the thing is fucked up.

CNN desperately feels it needs at least one panelist to represent the GOP/Trump view — and that means having one person who is committed to lies. They haven’t yet figured out that having a Trump supporter is akin to hosting a member of the KKK to provide a different perspective on race or a Nazi to provide another perspective on Judaism. For Fox, it’s easy to present an opposing view — they only need to host someone dedicated to telling the truth.

They spent May-July asserting (as did Donny) that the economy was on the mend so there was no need for another bill, but would mumble something about “We’ll see what next month looks like.”

Then August came and only after it became apparent that the economy was starting to stall out did Mitch take up the task of beginning to talk about the possibility of starting a conversation on the negotiation of a new relief bill. And not by voting on the House-approved bill, but by hammering together a $500B bill that fell apart the moment he realized that he couldn’t get it through on a party-line vote because half his caucus thought “Starve the poor” was a perfectly valid response to a national pandemic (the other half refusing to acknowledge there was a pandemic at all).

So what did Yertle do? What he always does: Pawned off the task to others (i.e. the WH) so that when it came crashing down, he could escape direct blame by moaning that the parties involved couldn’t come to an agreement that would allow him to act.

The two British princes performed their military service well alongside many many people taking the same risks who did not get a title, a subsidized lifestyle, and millions of pounds of income.

This is what I mean about royalty being a brand: “the Windsor boys did something that normal people do” is run through the filter of monarchist mystique and becomes notable…but only because everyone’s become habituated to the premise that royalty don’t have to do anything normal, or do things well.

So I posted yesterday that I was making refrigerator pickles (dill & spicy garlic). Followed the package directions and popped into the fridge. Package said ready after 8 hrs. Waited closer to 20. Results were: Did not meet expectations (still had a strong cucumber taste). A bit of research shows that 5 DAYS is the minimum time needed to properly produce decent refrigerator pickles. Were they hell they came up with 8 hours I have no idea. Next batch will be a hot brine and water bath in glass jars. Guess this is what I get for trying to take a (commercially produced) short cut. This is what I mean about royalty being a brand:

The brand means the male line Royals enter military service even if they don’t want to (vide Prince Edward) because it’s expected of them. Noblesse oblige, and when there’s fighting going on, such as defending the United States against the existential threat of a bunch of religious nutters holed up on some caves on the Afghanistan border it’s expected they go to the pointy end and do their duty. It’s one reason you hear the term “Heir and a Spare” used.

And where my wife was teaching public school until we decided she should quit (no benefits, no UI) rather than be forced to return to in-class teaching in September. We’re in the process of switching over our legal residence from OK to WA since we got here Nov. 1; mostly I’m cautious about screwing up existing benefits so we’ve slow rolled some things. Now we’ll likely be kicking them into high gear. Peace lizards! Gonna try to knock out at least a couple more job applications and bids on freelance gigs this afternoon.

re: #168 Charles Johnson

We’ve known for years that right wing domestic terrorism has been the biggest threat to the nation. We’ve known for years that white supremacists and right wing domestic terrorists have been coddled by Trump and the GOP because they form the most ardent of GOP supporters. The GOP have radicalized these people to act on their violent fantasies.

The GOP radicalized and fed these extremists nonstop propaganda and hate, and kept them in a hate-filled frenzy for decades now. That’s what the GOP built.

We’ve known that Trump and his corrupted DOJ have buried the reports showing the extent to which law enforcement is riddled with white supremacists. We’ve known that they too have buried the warnings about right wing domestic terrorism while elevating antifa to the worst in the universe when there’s precisely zero threat from them.

It’s projecting like IMAX, and it works because the base is all worked up to carry out more violence to preempt anything “antifa” might do. It’s a circle of violence and it started with the GOP and Trump.

It’s the perfect response, though, from the judge - “I’ll hear your case as soon as Plaintiffs have filed notice that all Defendants have been served.” In other words, shortly after hell freezes over.

Okay, I realize I’m being a gadfly today and I’ll promise I’ll stop after this, but…

I’ve run into a lot of “normal people” through my years and very few of them have actually served. It’s seems to be an even lower ratio among those who think they’re doing the country a great service by being conservative.
