Right Wing Hatebloggers Falling Like Flies: The Pamela Geller Edition

Wingnuts • Views: 38,160

Yesterday it was Jim Hoft, today it’s anti-Muslim fanatic Pamela Geller’s turn to be permanently suspended from Twitter.

They survived for years on Twitter, getting verified badges while spreading hatred, bigotry, and conspiracy theories, but when they signed on to promote Donald Trump and the GOP’s Big Lie about the 2020 election, Twitter brought the hammer down. It wasn’t all that other stuff, it was helping Trump try to steal the election.

One has to wonder if all this Twitter housecleaning was prompted by the voting machine lawsuits.

I made the brilliant decision to take a trip to the grocery at about six pm this evening, and it was fabulous. There was NO ONE there except me and the clerks. I strolled leisurely through the aisles, sometimes even walking against the grain of the new arrows on the floor telling you which direction to go. I took my time in the produce section. I read labels. I didn’t have to wait for anyone standing in the middle of the aisle obliviously talking on the cell phone. There was no one walking around without a mask on invading my space. It was fucking beautiful.

I followed football for a few years when I was in college and all of my college buddies were die-hard Colts fans. Those were the futile years, when said Colts got repeatedly bitch-slapped by Brady’s cheating Patriots before they could even make it to a Superb Owl. However, the worst one to watch was the infamous game when the Colts appeared to have it won against the Steelers, except for Ben Fucking Roethlisberger getting up off the ground after being hit (throwing an interception) to tackle the runner and end the game.

hi

Regarding the topic of this thread (hatemongers finally being banned), it might also be related to this (long read):

War on Section 230 begins in earnest as Dem senators look to limit legal immunity for social networks, websites etc (The Register)

US Senators Mark Warner (D-VA), Mazie Hirono (D-HI), and Amy Klobuchar (D-MN) on Friday introduced draft legislation to limit the legal protections available to social networks, websites, and anything else that provides an “interactive computer service.”

The three politicians proposed a bill they’re calling the SAFE TECH Act [PDF, five pages], which narrows the liability protection afforded to organizations by Section 230 of the US Communications Decency Act. Its full title gives a sense of the wrongs it aims to right: The Safeguarding Against Fraud, Exploitation, Threats, Extremism, and Consumer Harms Act.

From The Register:

The bill proposes to clarify where Section 230 immunity does not apply. It seeks to remove platform protection for:

Ads and other paid content, so platforms can’t profit from unlawful or harmful services.
Civil rights law and antitrust law violation claims.
Harassment/cyberstalking claims related to protected classes (e.g. sex, race, color, religion, ancestry, national origin, etc).
Wrongful death claims.
Alien Tort Claims Act claims (e.g. allowing survivors of the Rohingya genocide to sue Facebook).

The bill does not necessarily make online services automatically liable in such cases but it would allow a judge to determine whether claims cited in the bill could go forward without being summarily dismissed.

“For years, Section 230 provided a ‘Get Out of Jail Free’ card to platform companies as their sites are openly and repeatedly used by bad actors to cause damage and injury,” said Warner via Twitter. “Section 230 will be brought into the present-day with the SAFE TECH Act creating targeted exceptions.”

CHEYENNE - A local man is suing two Laramie County Sheriff’s deputies for their actions during a January 2020 welfare check that ended in the man and his mother being stunned and arrested.

In the civil suit, Devin Bryant of Cheyenne alleges that Deputies Jason Gillott and Ryan Lee violated his Fourth Amendment rights and acted negligently when they “violently ripped Mr. Bryant out of his home and stunned Mr. Bryant and his mother without legal justification.” Gillott and Lee had been prompted to check on Bryant after his estranged wife called the department about an email Bryant sent saying he had cut himself.

I just gotta say, I am not buying Queen Latifah as some sort of special forces badass in this new show.

I can think of several women who could pull it off (Jessica Alba, Sigourney Weaver, Kate Mulgrew & more) but nope, not her. Pity, the concept is interesting.

There are some Aum Shinrikyo experts who are concerned about Japanese involvement in QAnon because it reminds them of how people coalesced around Shoko Asahara. They’re keeping a close eye on things. I was about to say that they’re missing a flesh and blood leader, but the reality is they have a leader—Donald Trump. But it’s unclear what he’s up to, if he plans to start another political party or what.

This is true, but we really need to keep an eye on him, and on the worldwide activities of QAnon.

QAnon Is Alive and Well in Japan
The conspiracy theory’s rise in Japan has disturbing parallels with Aum Shinrikyo, the cult behind the 1995 sarin gas attack on the Tokyo subway.

There’s more out there, and no doubt more to come as it becomes clear what Trump plans to do. As No Malarkey! said, Trump is *lazy*. That said, keep an eye on his trial, that could have an impact on what he does next.

re: #116 Scout

Japanese society is quite different than American society in several ways. Thus, while there could be parallels between Aum and Trumpism (as now grafted with Qanon), I think the method of taking root in a society is different between the two.

Here in the US, Trumpism as a cult is made possible by fundamentalist Christianity, a factory for turning out cults. While in Japan the central factor in cults arise from the oppressive nature of Japanese society in which people can greatly struggle with finding individuality in a society that expects conformity.

We are suffering from having a major political party now captive to cultic right-wing groups. This gives power to the fringe elements of society, as they feel empowered.

This is why we have to persevere and make sure the GOP pays at the ballot box. Only successive defeats in national and local elections will kill this beast.

It was, but he thought he had an iron-clad “no editing of my screeds” agreement as part of his employment contract…and the editors disagreed. So he did what all drama queens do: He doused his career in petrol, struck a match on his way out the door, and declared it was their fault for letting him do that.

Now when the subject comes up, he plays the victim of his own decision, screaming that it was “censorship” on the part of the editors to tell him not to publish one prolonged vowel movement about how the rest of the media was in Joe Biden’s pocket.

Some folks were talking about fracking and quakes a couple of threads down based on a 3.3 SE of San Antonio near Smiley, TX. Okay, here’s a Geologist talking. This is really long.

Yes, there’s a relationship, between fracking and quakes, but not what you might think. Fracking uses a Devil’s brew of specialized fluids to fracture big thick layers of black shales and release oil, condensate (white gas), and natural gas from those source rocks. Those hydrocarbons normally take hundreds of years to move a foot or two in the shales and migrate to a more transmissive rock like sandstone or karst limestone, which are traditional hydrocarbon traps, or reservoirs, in traditional, pre-fracking oil and gas production. The hydrocarbons did not start in those reservoirs, they migrated there over millennia from the black shales.

Fracking fluids are tailored to the source rock, but generically contain water, propants (like sand, which hold open the shale after it’s been shattered) and surfactants (think Dawn dishwashing detergent) to help allow hydrocarbons to move to the well bore and up to the surface. There’s also a bunch of other crap that can include strong acids or bases.

Now each well is fracked with 2-3 million gallons of that liquid, which sounds like a lot, but really isn’t, relatively speaking. After the black shale is fracked, those fracking liquids are returned to the surface by reverse hydrostatic pressure (that oil and gas wants to get the hell out of that formation now that it can).

Some Important background:

In the past, the vast majority of oil and gas wells were vertical, which is why porous/transmissive rocks like sandstone and karst limestone were the reservoir targets. So if a reservoir was 50’ thick, you could make good money by sucking out of that reservoir because the porosity and transmissivity of the rock allowed you pull everything within a 1/2 mile radius to the well bore. When you drilled vertically through black shale source rock, which may 500-800 feet thick, you’re radius of influence may be only 5 feet. Not viable economically.

But everyone came to realize that the vast majority of hydrocarbons were still locked in the black shales- the source rock. They were still migrating into the reservoirs at the same glacial pace, but you could not extract it economically.

Then came offshore drilling. The first offshore wells were in shallow water and drilled by drill barges, which float out into the swamps and just offshore, drill away, and, if they hit good reservoirs, would leave a pressure protected assembly at the site until a production sleeve could be built around it with oil/gas separators, crew quarters, pipeline tie-ins to get the product back to land, &c. But the farther off shore you got, the deeper the water got, and the more expensive it became to build those individual production sleeves. One well per sleeve had an economic depth limit.

So they built jack-up rigs, which had legs you could extend down to the bottom and raise the rig out of the water. You could use those rigs in water up to 700 feet deep.

And they built semi-submersible rigs and drill ships, where you can drill to depths of 12,000’.

Now, if you found a really good oil field in water over 100’ deep, you could put a really BIG production sleeve at the bottom of the ocean. But you needed some way to space out a bunch of wells from the top of that sleeve or you would be getting in the way of that first well.

So you would drill 12, 18, 24, 36, whatever number of wells you needed to make it work economically, and you would do it by drilling directional wells. These used new subsurface navigational tech to kick wells off of the vertical in precisely placed paths so that the 1/2 mile radius of influence could be maximized for each individual well drilled from a single platform. This made offshore drilling a real moneymaker.

So, to end the background lesson, someone said, “Hey, wait, how close to the horizontal can I get with one of these downhole directional assemblies before I start chewing the bore hole to pieces?” The answer was around 5-40 degrees, depending on what you were drilling through. The harder the rock, the lower the angle.

“So if the rock was hard, like a black shale source rock, instead of drilling through 500’ of it 90 degrees, I could drill through 9,000’ of it at 5 degrees?”

“Yeah, but with a 5’ radius of influence you’d still get squat for production.”

“What if I used a hydraulic hammer to bust that rock to fine gravel and increased my radius of influence to 200’ and used sand and surfactants to keep it broken and flowing?”

And Lo! Fracking was born.

Now, as I said above, after the well is fracked, 2 to 3 million gallons of fracking fluid is pushed back up to the surface by downhole pressure. That’s 250 to 375 tanker trucks at 8,000 gallons a pop. But that fluid can’t be economically recycled because there’s so much shit in it. So it has to be handled as Haz Waste.

What to do with it? Let’s drill a real deep injection well into an unusable salt water formation and pump it down there! Which would be OK, if it was accepting frack fluid waste from just a few wells. But they aren’t. They often have open permits which say you can take X, Y, and Z type wastes at whatever your pumps can handle.

Remember that radius of influence that an oil well has to extract fluids? Injection wells also have radiuses of influence, and they are filling that saltwater bearing reservoir with additional fluids under pressure. If the system is really transmissive and really, really deep, it probably isn’t a problem. But if it isn’t, or if you are disposing billions of gallons of frack water from thousands of wells, eventually you are going to have a rupture, which will look just like a 3.3 earthquake on the Richter scale.
