This seemed like an extremely bad idea to me. Huge potential downside to solve minor or nonexistent problem.

If someone breaks into either our water tower enclosure or the village shop, the water system immediately calls everyone on the village board, the water operator, and the sheriff.

The issue I think with Oldsmar would be “lazy.”

The video appears to show the truck hitting a snowbank on the right shoulder seconds before the fall.

The driver lost control and went over the barrier wall.

He then plunged 70 feet down onto the westbound I-94 distress lane.

When deputies arrived, they found the pickup upright.

Two people were helping the driver, who was conscious and breathing.

The sheriff’s office said he did not show signs of impairment.

He was taken to an area hospital to be evaluated.

“If you can’t trust a cop, who can you trust?” Some people invested their life savings in a gun dealership run by a Dodge County sheriff’s deputy. It turned out to be a massive Ponzi scheme.

Ex-Dodge County sheriff’s deputy bilked $11 million from investors and bank (Omaha World-Herald)

Craig Harbaugh carried himself with all kinds of credibility.

After all, he was a Dodge County sheriff’s deputy with a side business as a federally licensed gun dealer.

He even took potential investors to the bank with him — carrying not only his badge and his duty weapon but also what he said were purchase orders by businesses like Werner Enterprises and law enforcement agencies from Wyoming to Missouri to Tennessee.

He sat down with the investors and the bank officials and convinced them to invest their life savings or lend him millions.

Then he bilked them all out of $11 million — thought to be one of the largest individual embezzlements in Nebraska history. (A Gretna accountant once bilked an Omaha candy and tobacco distributor out of $4.1 million.)

He bilked Great Western Bank out of $4.1 million. It was the bank which uncovered the Ponzi scheme. He also bilked retirees out of their savings.

NORTH PLATTE — The Lincoln County Republican Party voted Sunday to join an effort to censure Sen. Ben Sasse.

Despite the snowy weather, 32 people attended Sunday’s meeting, according to county GOP Chairwoman Carol Friesen.

The censure resolution received unanimous approval, she said in an email.

The resolution criticizes the Republican senator for “dismissing the legitimate concerns” of Nebraska’s secretary of state, attorney general “and a huge majority of Republican voters” regarding allegations of fraud in November’s presidential election.

It also says he issued “statements inciting radical proposals and retributions against law-abiding elected Senators,” referring to Sens. Ted Cruz and Josh Hawley, who objected to certification of the Electoral College results. And it accuses Sasse of “failure to respect the high office of the President of the United States.”

Yeah, that isn’t enough, Gov. Ricketts, though breaking the ice on the idea might get the ball rolling in the future.

LINCOLN — A long line of supporters testified Monday for a proposal by Gov. Pete Ricketts to spend $40 million in state funds to help expand high-speed internet service into Nebraska’s rural areas.

Representatives of telecommunications companies and school, business and rural organizations all said the COVID-19 pandemic has illustrated the importance of broadband, as people were forced to work and to do schoolwork at home. It also underscored the “digital divide” between the adequacy of service in urban and rural areas.

Ricketts and others said they’ve heard too many stories of families having to drive their kids to libraries in town, parking lots near schools or high hills near their ranch to access adequate internet service to do homework. Businesses, they said, won’t locate or expand in a rural areas unless they have high-speed internet.

re: #49 Anymouse 🌹🏡😷

More:

Ricketts said his proposal would bring broadband to an additional 30,000 households in Nebraska.

Right now, he said, an estimated 80,000 households don’t have access to internet that meets the federal definition of broadband set in 2015: 25 megabits per second download speed and 3 megabits per second upload speed, referred to as 25/3.

Under LB 388, state grants would cover 50% of the cost of a project and would have to provide internet speeds of 100/100, which Ricketts and others said represents “quality” internet for today’s needs. About 150,000 households in the state, he said, now lack access to 100/100 internet speeds.

I think that number 80,000 is probably low.

Right now according to Ookla my speeds are:

Ping: 67 milliseconds.
Download: 9.54 Mbits
Upload: 810 kilobits.

.

Of course, unlike your place, we have the option of buying into Comcast service, which at the moment we have (at 125-150 Mbps depending on the surrounding circumstances).

The problem, however, lies in our family also being Avalanche fans, which until such time as Altitude TV wins its lawsuits against Comcast and Dish, means that we sort of need DirecTV.

But what did just start getting offered here is Rise, which is basically a second LTE antenna in the neighbourhood that broadcasts to an external antenna and provides a shared 25 Mbps to the whole house (for just under 60 a month with no data cap, or .40 with a 350-GB one).

So there’s a reasonable chance we do that and switch Comcast out entirely in favour of DirecTV.

Hey. I’ve been busy. Ski area saw record numbers on Saturday, a foot of fresh snow greeted the guests, our parking lots filled up a half hour after the lifts opened, cars were parked on the access road a mile from the lodge. It was the same story at the big resorts.

It’s been a dry winter, so when the big snows came everybody and their dog just had to show up. People are understandably getting cabin fever from the rona, but the big ski areas said they’d limit capacity through reservations to maintain social distancing (the ski area I work at has no such system, and as a result we got slammed, I’m told it was top 5 busiest days in company history). Reservation system or no, the ski area lift lines and lodges were too damn crowded this weekend. One in 14 Colorado residents have been infected with the rona, so…

I missed all the fresh snow, had to work in the trenches to make it happen for everybody else. I got to ski today. We’re going through a prolonged wind event, so the 2+ feet that fell over the weekend got blown around and buffed out, leaving the surface nice ‘n crusty. Still found some quality turns today, they opened an expert area at Beaver Creek today.

In much sadder news, four guys from my county, all beloved dudes, all super-experienced well prepared skiers, died in avalanches last week. The community is reeling, this shit is totally unprecedented. I didn’t know any of them, but I used to hang out at Bonfire Brewery and drink their microbrews, one of the founders was among the deceased.

And four more people died in Utah outside SLC in an avalanche this weekend. My heart is heavy.

This is one reason why there was urgency at the start of the pandemic, to control it as quickly as possible.

Album sales surge for Morgan Wallen after racist comment

NASHVILLLE, Tenn. (AP) — Fans of Morgan Wallen are buying up the country star’s latest album after a video showed him shouting a racial slur last week.

Wallen’s sophomore record, “Dangerous: The Double Album” retains its top spot for a fourth week on Billboard’s all-genre albums chart, less than a week after Wallen apologized for using racist language.

The country music industry acted swiftly to publicly rebuke him and radio stations and streaming services removed his songs from their playlists. But fans responded by playing him even more.

Billboard reports that his latest album sold 25,000 copies during the week ending Feb. 4, an increase of 102%, according to MRC Data. Billboard reported that that the album’s streaming numbers slightly increased by 3%, representing roughly 160 million on-demand streams. Song downloads from the album also went up by 67%.
