Biden Promotes Eugene Vindman After Trump Sh*tbirds Tried To Bury Him (Wonkette)

The Great Unfucking continues apace! Yesterday the White House approved the promotion of Lt. Col. Yevgeny “Eugene” Vindman to colonel after Trump and his lackeys tried to torpedo his career in apparent retaliation for his role in the Ukraine impeachment scandal. Which makes TWO nicetimes posts in one day! See, the earth really is healing.

I suspect that former military folk already knew this. But notice in the picture accompanying the article that AnyMouse posted. The Colonel insignia is the only Army rank insignia which comes in pairs because a different insignia goes on the right shoulder than goes on the left shoulder.

I am glad that Y Vindman is receiving his long overdue promotion to O-6. It will be interesting to see what happens for O-7. certainly before the Trump thugs went at him, he was in the very top of his promotion class.

I believe that his brother is currently working on his PhD and on a book.

Hopefully the thugs will face consequences to their behavior. Although I suspect that isn’t going to happen.

A North Platte high school senior tried to publish in the school newspaper an article about rampant racism in the school. The principal refused to allow the article to be published, claiming “inaccuracies” (without saying what the inaccuracies were).

The faculty advisor for the school paper went over the article with the student, finding no inaccuracies. The principal continued to stonewall the article. After three months, the principal said the article was not timely and the student should move on.

That student also writes for the North Platte newspaper. The owner ran the student’s article in the North Platte Bulletin.

The principal has also prohibited the teacher from speaking to the press about the issue.

State senator Groene of North Platte (R-asshole) says the principal is fully within his rights (fuque the Supreme Court). State senator Adam Morfeld (D-Lincoln) has introduced a bill in the Unicameral to protect student journalists.

Nebraska high school journalist refuses to back down, publishes her censored article on Confederate flags and racism at school in local paper (Student Press Law Center)

When the Confederate Flags Fly, People Talk (North Platte Bulletin article cached at Google Docs)

Hah, we fought that war here in CA 50 years ago. A Free Student Press won back then, too.

My state senator Steve Erdman (R-Bayard) is opposed to the bill, on the grounds that “students shouldn’t be writing about politics or abortion” in school newspapers.

Sen. Groene said if he was the school superintendent, he’d shut the school newspaper down.

Thread on the debate yesterday on Sen. Morfeld’s bill. You can see who the Republicans are by those who want to restrict free speech in the student press.

Sen. Groene went so far as to claim that there was no suppression of student’s free speech because the writer got to publish the article in the North Platte Bulletin, and students can use social media.

Why does nearly every American city have a Chinese restaurant, grocery store and/or a Chinese laundry?

The Chinese Exclusion Act made it illegal to hire Chinese as employees, so they had to go into business for themselves. And make sure their children got a college education so they could be self-employed professionals and not just restaurateurs, shopkeepers or launderers…

re: #9 Belafon

[Embedded content]

(ahem) 1. Yes, God has foreknowledge. But because he loves us more than can be said in words, he gave us Free Will, which means even though he knows what we will do, we have the full freedom not to do it. He knew we would eat from the tree, because he has foreknowledge. We didn’t have to eat from teh tree, because we have free will. I know, this sounds like Augustine trying to explain why his essay is three days late, but shouldn’t take the late penalty.
2. It is true that Jesus’ divinity is a sticky wicket to try to parse. Mary supposedly was knocked up by God in an Immaculate Conception. The Holy Ghost is typically represented by the Dove. This seems uncomfortably close to Leda getting knocked up by the swan, or the other gal getting knocked up by the bull (who also turned out to be Zeus). But religion is full of kind of uncomfortable moments for particular faiths where other particular faiths have stories that seem a little too close to a particular scripture to be comfortable. My father would have explained it by saying that all the organized religions of the world have bits and pieces of the revelation that God has, well, “revealed” to us, to define a term with the same term, which I hate to do—but I digress—and that Christianity and its particular scripture is a kind of culmination of what we as Christians of course believe is the “right” way of viewing things. I’m oversimplifying what I think he would say, because Dad was a fucking genius, and I’m merely pretty smart, so assume that maybe half of that paraphrase is accurate.
3. Getting back to Jesus, which I have to do in point 3 because I just ate the fucking hell out of the space I had reserved for 2, Christ’s appearance in the world is of course foreshadowed in holy scripture—torah—and the only issue really between Jews and Christians is that Jews at the time of Jesus’ appearance were being inundated by charlatans who claimed to be the Messiah and ultimately weren’t, so it’s hard to get upset with the Jews for assuming that Jesus was one more charlatan in a long line of them, that extends all the way up, as I recall, to some guy in Poland in the fifteenth century who got shut down pretty quick. Why is Jesus’ appearance foreshadowed in Torah? (from a Christian perspective). Because God so loved the world that he sent his only begotten son (important word there!) into it, to suffer as humanity suffers, including death, because of course God had to have a plan in place for saving humanity from the corruption and ultimate spiritual death that we spawned through our disobedience concerning the Fruit, and Our First Disobedience that brought Death Into the World, to quote the Reverend Blind Milton. And the only way God could save humanity from its own corruption was with that sacrifice. And before you say, “Hmmm….some sacrifice! Jesus was God. He was just play-acting. He knew all along, as did God, that Jesus would be returned to the Godhead, so any suffering he experienced wasn’t real, in the sense that humanity experiences real suffering. To which I can only say theologians have been struggling with that for 2,000 years. Some groups believed that yes, Jesus was in a sense play-acting, and that he was fully divine and was essentially God walking about on earth. Others tried to split the question down the middle, with Jesus being half human/half divine, like an alloy. I believe current church doctrine is that Christ is fully human and fully divine. I just report this stuff, I don’t try to explain it. It is interesting though that if you ask a physicist, he/she will tell you that light is a particle, and light is wave, and which it is depends on how you experiment on it. They’ll also tell you an electron can be found by place or by speed, but not both at the same time. I think I’m saying that right. So apparently, complete paradoxes are not the territory of religion alone, and the fact that Christians can’t adequately explain everything that happens in the Book of God does not make religion any less valid than science is by being unable to explain everything in the Book of Nature.

Morning Lizardim. Spent my AM pre-work time replacing a power outlet in my living room. Not because anything broke, but because Mrs. Fish wants to start installing outlets with USB charging ports in them. It’s not a bad idea, so I bought a box of them from Amazon and identified the first targets for replacement, and knocked out the highest-priority one this morning before work. A pleasant surprise for her to wake up to. How go things among the lizardfolk on this cool pre-spring Wednesday?

‘We want to be educated, not indoctrinated,’ say Trump voters wary of covid shots

The responses of focus group participants suggest they can be persuaded — but perhaps not by politicians, including the former president

“These people represent 30 million Americans. And without these people, you’re not getting herd immunity,” said Frank Luntz, the longtime GOP pollster who convened Saturday’s focus group over Zoom. The group followed what Luntz characterized as a remarkable arc: By the end of the two-hour-plus session, all 19 participants (one dropped out early) said they were more likely to get vaccinated, and Luntz said he had begun nationwide polling to see which messages resonated with a broader population.

re: #54 Belafon

A quick thing on the paradoxes of which you are talking about at the end: they are only possible paradoxes because particle and wave are words we use to describe things at the macro level, but that separation doesn’t apply at the quantum level.

The thing is — human “understanding” of the world only works (mostly *) at the Newtonian level (not too small, not too fast). That we think of quantum and relativistic effects as “paradoxical” is simply us working outside our grassland living ape envelope, it isn’t anything important about the actual universe.

(* I say “mostly” because most humans don’t instinctively grasp Newton’s laws of motion, we just assume that things at some velocity will slow down without more push).

Fun stuff. I put a smart light switch to operate the light outside our front door. I have the front light come on at 7 and turn off at midnight. Going to set a few more up in the house for when we start going on vacation again to give the illusion of occupancy…not that I worry (lived here 10 years and probably only locked all of the doors a couple of times).

Thinking about adding USB port outlets though. Makes sense.

Authorities said Long took responsibility and believe he acted alone. “He made indicators that he has some issues, potentially sexual addiction, and may have frequented some of these places in the past,” Sheriff’s Capt. Jay Baker said at a news conference. “We still have a lot of things to process.”

Baker later added that in their interview with Long, 21, the suspect indicated that the spas were “a temptation” for him. “It’s a temptation for him that he wanted to eliminate,” Baker told reporters. “It’s still early on, but those were comments that he made.”

There are quite a few countries with “established” Christian churches. This makes the Christians safely ignorable, much like titled aristocrats.

Germany has no officially established church, but the territory is divided up between the two de facto established churches, the Lutherans and the Catholics.

They have a (voluntary) church tax collected and distributed by the state as well as religious instruction in the schools (which one can opt out of in favor of “ethics”) and are represented in a lot of administrative bodies, the the governing board for national TV.

He blames the courts. He will take his vengeance. If Kavanaugh/Gorsuch/Roberts aren’t shitting their pants … they should be.

This is amazing on SO many levels.

1. Trump basically admits he lost and he knows he lost, and that the election had to be “overturned”
2. Trump admits he expected the courts to “do the right thing” and show loyalty to him, rather than to the American system of government
3. Trump displays the seething rage he feels at those who have betrayed him

Mafia bosses reserve their most brutal, sadistic violence for traitors. They have to. It’s the only thing keeping everyone else from getting ideas.

Also, it seems that the author of Hillbilly Elegy, has decided that the whole personal responsibility thing he espoused in his book …

Drug abuse, welfare dependency, domestic violence, irresponsible spending, and family disintegration were all omnipresent in Vance’s family and community. He wrote of children suffering from “Mountain Dew mouth,” because their parents plied them with sugary sodas, sometimes even in infants’ bottles, to quiet them. “This book,” he wrote, “is about … what goes on in the lives of real people when the industrial economy goes south. It’s about reacting to bad circumstances in the worst way possible. It’s about a culture that encourages social decay instead of counteracting it.”

… well, now that he might ride to Congress on a wave of white grievance and fake outrage, well now, that’s a horse of a different color.

My brother just texted me, he got our mom an appointment on Sunday for the vaccine at the CVS half a mile from her house! He’d held off on getting her an appointment because the places that had spots open were 30 to 45 miles away, and we couldn’t see taking a sometimes incontinent 81 YO on what would essentially be a road trip.

I’m very pleased. My brother had been coming across as vaccine hesitant but he’s got an appointment for tomorrow and now mom on Sunday.

Note: If Orange Caesar was still president, we’d be in the middle of a shitshow, just like Brasil right now.

Brazil is experiencing a historic collapse of its health service as intensive care units in hospitals run out of capacity, its leading health institute, Fiocruz, has warned.

Covid-19 units in all but two of Brazil’s 27 states are at or above 80% capacity, according to Fiocruz.

In Rio Grande do Sul state there are no intensive care beds available at all.

Today’s electoral-vote.com re the filibuster and McConnell:

“Nor do we find McConnell’s bluster to be particularly persuasive. After all, he makes these same threats every time the filibuster appears to be endangered. And the odds of the Republican Party claiming the trifecta again, anytime soon, are pretty low. By the time they do, the Supreme Court will have already decided, one way or the other, if it’s sticking with Roe v. Wade, while America’s auto fleet will be well on the way to being all-electric. Meanwhile, Planned Parenthood has already lost the majority of its federal funding, while all red states (and many blue states) already allow some form of concealed carry. Point is, these specific threats are rather empty.”

A forgotten Cold War experiment has revealed its icy secret. It’s bad news for the planet. WaPo

At first, Andrew Christ was ecstatic. In soil taken from the bottom of the Greenland ice sheet, he’d discovered the remains of ancient plants. Only one other team of researchers had ever found greenery beneath the mile-high ice mass.
But then Christ determined how long it had been since that soil had seen sunlight: Less than a million years. Just the blink of an eye in geologic terms.
And it dawned on him. If plants once grew at multiple spots on the surface of Greenland, that meant the ice that now covers the island had entirely melted. And if the whole Greenland ice sheet had melted once in the not-so-distant past, that meant it could go again.
“Oh my god,” he thought.

two non-Asian women were also slain, as we as an injured male.

There were reports that he was shouting “Kill all the Asians!”…let’s see what comes out of the official police statement

You have to be truly demented or lying to believe that Trump ever cared about anyone except himself — and certainly never the middle class. Cawthorn is such a dishonest weasel but not quite as stupid as MGT.

And once again, you have “liberal” media running interference and all but idolizing GOP governors and pols in ways you’ll never see them talk about Dem leaders that actually deserve respect.

They’re going to carry his re-election on his back all because of their hard-on for ‘Strong Republican Leader Who Defied The LIberal Odds” bullshit.

Which means, Madison, you’re old enough to remember when, in 2008, it cost $90 to fill up your truck because gas was $4/gallon here in Texas.

Let’s see … violent video games? Hollywood pushing porn? Economic insecurity?

What’s going to be the big excuse on Fox & Hate Radio for this shitsmear?

Has SMOTI declared he is a registered Democrat yet?

The beard. It’s surely a sign of a lone wolf.

If you grew up in the Upper Midwest, this guy is immediately recognizable as the creepy angry guy that is prone to get shit-faced and then driving recklessly.

Many of my classmates were this way. Many also died when their shitty cars skidded off snowy roads and into trees, deep ditches and bridge abutments.

Strangely, I do not mourn their loss.

I think this is a rather surface take. Why is the killer linking sex with massage parlor? Why is he looking only there for sex?

The linkage of Asian women with available sex is a result of both misogyny and racism, and it’s been well known for an extremely long time. And it’s common. It’s not leaping to conclusion, but it’s articulating a well known relationship.

Dim Jim Hoft has apparently gotten the perma-ban from Twitter. I can only hope that this gradually shrivels his reach & appeal.

And yes, I know, they all run away to private boards like 8chan or Parler or Gab or whatnot. This makes it easier to identify and round them up.

I assume he also still has his website, The Gateway Pundit. I won’t link it.

Prolly because this dude is an sex starved Incel who ran out of money..

Sounds like Christian guilt over enjoying sex and rather than smoking a joint and chillin out, he wanted to remove the temptations. At least if the reporting is to be believed. Clearly sex is worse than murder since you can show killings on prime time TV, but can’t show nudity.

Thinking out loud here, but could misogynistic and racist prejudices play a role in an alternate way, like the dude goes to said business establishments for sexual services, but gets turned down, maybe repeatedly, maybe even harshly, triggering him because they fail to live up to his prejudices.

A common source for narcissistic injury and trigger for rage is when what is outside the narcissistic entity (the self for the individual, plain vanilla garden variety narcissist, and the ingroup for a group/collective narcissist).

If you, as me, subscribe to the notion of some forms of extremism being manifestations of group/collective narcissism, them acting shooting out makes a bit more sense that way.
