I’m only posting this for the visual (not for Marcy’s commentary). At different times in my life I’ve tried to grow facial hair, and the thing that always stops me is the need to groom so that it’s not hanging over the lips and getting in the way of food and drink. I just don’t see how anyone could function this way. ETA: you have to click on the AP link for Durham’s image and stop looking at tits above.

But that is the thing about so many minimum wage jobs today - companies don’t really care about expertise in their minimum wage employees. The whole gestalt of American society today is that ever-cheaper is the true meaning of life.

My own personal take is that I don’t go to fast food restaurants. I rarely even go to Walmart or Target, etc. I live very humbly, but I also don’t like cheap things.

Some large swath of America really is fine with people forced to work for sustenance wages because a large swath of America is fine with someone else’s poverty.

We know for sure that same sex couples, if they get their kids from adoption, or surrogacy… they definitely didn’t get them from too much tequila the night their team won (or lost) the championship. Gay couples’ kids are always on purpose.

re: #8 Shiplord Kirel: Fan of USPS, Goodyear, and Oreo

Well, if we’re sharing protests, here’s a picture & two video clips from before the second service today.

It really does look like Driscoll has decided that he’s sending out members of the security team to counter me. *shrug* All I do is sit there and tell them truths about Mark Driscoll, how he used $250K of Mars Hill Church money to buy his way on the NYTimes bestseller list in 2012 (for “Real Marriage”), about how he cratered his church in 2014, and how he’s got a cult of personality here.

And, why yes, I’m extremely annoying and insistent. I guarantee you, I am NOT like that at work.

Oh yeah, other things.

* Got a thumbs up from a guy in a car going westbound on McDonald.
* Got a thumbs up from a woman in an SUV in the church’s parking lot. That kind of blew my mind.
* I need to see if I have a shot of the woman making the “0” sign when I asked about the December 2020 COVID-19 outbreak, which one of my sources told me about this afternoon.
* I drove by the location of the $740,000 office condo about 8 miles north of the church that the church bought at the end of March and took some video and pics.

After I got home, one of my sources dropped another blog post called “The Trinity Church May Be Watching You. wthrockmorton.com My response? “This is what Scientology does.”

I dunno if it’s official, but he’s definitely in charge. It’s bizarre.

ETA: the blog post I linked to names the former director of security, who recently left the church. Guy is ex-enlisted, current reserves in the Marines. He has good credentials. But the spying on people who were thrown out of the church…NOPE…that was his last nerve..

“…Even if [Rep. Liz Cheney] is cast out of power in the House, she has made clear that she will not stop, promising to take her argument against Trump to the campaign trail in Wyoming, where he garnered 70 percent of the vote in 2020. She has told others that blocking Trump from leading the party is a fight she sees as just beginning, no matter how Wednesday’s vote goes.

“The Republican Party is at a turning point,” Cheney wrote Wednesday in a Washington Post op-ed, “and Republicans must decide whether we are going to choose truth and fidelity to the Constitution.”

Not that I’d have been able to RELAX with it anyway since the Rapids are being blown out at home by a team they were favoured over a ridiculous margin (I honestly KNEW Minny would get a clean sheet, but stupidly put my money on the Pids managing one too), but…

Background: the game was specifically billed everywhere online as ONLY available on ESPN+. I didn’t know it at the time, but that’s because the broadcaster in the home market can only provide two feeds to DirecTV (and AT&T Television, for those few who have that), and obviously if the worst team in New World top-division soccer is playing, it’s the one that gets bumped to a tape delay when the others are low-returning plays to win their league this year.

But any org interested in maintaining its fans’ loyalty should know they don’t much like watching a game whose outcome is already determined. I suspect they lose 20 fans every time they black out a national feed while they can’t put up a competing stream.

Regarding the current Covid outbreak in Nepal:

As April progressed, Nepalis gathered for religious festivals at home and across the border in India, where Nepali devotees joined Hindus who bathed in the Ganges for Kumbh Mela, one of the world’s biggest religious gatherings.

They included Nepal’s former King Gyanendra Shah and Queen Komal Shah, who were admitted to hospital with Covid-19 on their return to Nepal, according to a statement from Norvic International Hospital in Kathmandu.

Around the same time, thousands of Nepalis gathered in the capital to celebrate the major religious festival Pahan Charhe. Others came together in Bhaktapur, a nearby city to celebrate Bisket Jatra, despite authorities ordering them not to, according to local media. One placard in support of the event read: “Our festival is dearer than our lives to us.”

Stupid selfish bastards.

And you’d think that the reason for denying a delay while DNA evidence was tested might be because of some legal precedent or error in the filings, but no:

The Innocence Project and the A.C.L.U. have pushed for additional DNA testing at previous times, including the eve of Mr. Lee’s execution. The request was denied. A federal judge rejected Mr. Lee’s request for a stay of the execution, saying that he had “simply delayed too long,” according to a complaint filed by Ms. Young.

By why might the courts be rushing forward?

Mr. Lee’s execution, on April 20, 2017, was the first in Arkansas in more than a decade. Some accused the state of rushing Mr. Lee and several other prisoners to their deaths that month before the expiration of its supply of a lethal injection drug.

I suspect the opportunity to kick BoJo right in the jimmies in the biggest fashion possible in public is what is motivating a lot of this at the ground level. But in the leadership, the opportunity to twist England’s arm by making clear that the continuation of the Union depends upon the will of the member nations is just too juicy to ignore.

I’d like to hear from our Scottish and English contingent about it, but I think it’s not a feint for most people there and when they say they want independence, they want independence. They’re also looking at an entrenched Tory majority in Westminster, who doesn’t give a shit about Scotland.

I’m not saying it’s a feint, or rather not entirely a feint. There certainly is a very strong pro-indie motivation here, but not everybody’s on the same page about it.

I imagine there’s also a good deal of resentment over the fact that the last time independence was put to a vote, part of what defeated it was promises made that there would be no “Brexit” vote. Then the Tories won the following year and went back on that promise, even if they genuinely thought at the time that the referendum would fail.

Omaha World-Herald:

Farewell, hangar queen.

Offutt Air Force Base’s 45th Reconnaissance Squadron said goodbye Friday to one of its most trouble-prone jets, an OC-135B that logged 36,064 flight hours and 6,135 takeoffs and landings in nearly 60 years of military use.

“Jets get old, people get old,” said Lt. Col. Andrew “Tripper” Maus, the squadron’s commander. “Bittersweet’s probably the best word for it.”

The aircraft, tail number 61-2672, spent the last 20 years flying aerial photography missions — primarily over Russia — in carrying out the international Open Skies Treaty. It was no longer needed after the Trump administration pulled out of the 34-nation pact last November.

The second Open Skies jet (tail number 61-2670), which has an equally troubled maintenance history, is slated for retirement June 4. Both will be flown to the Air Force’s desert boneyard near Tucson, Arizona, to be stored and, eventually, scrapped.

Indeed, the rise of Waze, Google Maps, Inrix and other apps that respond to live traffic data to reroute drivers accordingly — not to mention the concomitant proliferation of app-following Uber and Lyft drivers — has turned millions of formerly main-route-following drivers into sneaky shortcut seekers. Formerly quiet peaceful neighborhoods may never be the same again.

On the plus side, the widespread use of these apps saves individual drivers some time and may slightly reduce the amount of time we all spend burning extra fuel by idling in congested traffic. But the data on this is mixed and warrants further research.

While you may have gotten to work three minutes faster this morning, what was the cost? Neighborhoods everywhere are miffed at the proliferation of cars racing through formerly quiet back streets to circumvent the latest highway logjam.

The problem has been especially noticeable in already car-crazed Los Angeles, where neighborhood streets filled up with traffic once Waze hit the market in 2011 and started alerting Angelinos of the fastest, least congested routes to and fro. As more and more drivers followed Waze’s directions, the app sent them deeper and deeper into formerly forlorn byways. With Google Maps, Inrix and others following Waze’s lead, the problem has only gotten worse in recent years.

(more at the Scottsbluff, Nebr. Star-Herald)

That is not a real problem here though: Any traffic jam on our very few highways in the Panhandle (US-26, US-385, US-30, NE-92, NE-88, I-80) would direct you onto dirt roads.

This is why I tip very well everywhere I go, now that I can afford to. I was introduced to the power of good tipping when I went on business trips with a former company; when we went to established clients they had visited before, and to restaurants they frequented when visiting said clients, our servers were prompt and attentive and our meals were perfection. I took note of this. Yes, that may be slightly selfish, but I do also tip well out of compassion and the desire to take care of those who are working in jobs that I wouldn’t want to do. Scariest thought to a “capitalist” is that those who labor will one day realize that they’re being cheated by those who profit.

That’s why we continue to
a) brutalize our workers with an inhumane and unrealistic Work Ethic
and
b) regularly allow in hordes of undocumented workers who will depress labor prices

PM calls Union summit as Sturgeon says second referendum is ‘will’ of Scotland

one of the chief arguments against Independence was that it would have left them outside the EU with no guarantee of being taken back in.

At this point, they have little to lose even if the EU will not accept them. And I see a distinction between not accepting a breakaway country from the EU to letting back a part of the EU that overwhelmingly wanted to stay in the initial Brexit referendum.

What needs to happen to fill the restaurant jobs in Lincoln? Some restaurants are cutting hours or shutting down on certain days because of a lack of staffing — what some call an “employment crisis.” Others are offering more pay and hiring bonuses.

Cut opening hours: less overall revenue, same fixed costs

Raise wages: more revenue but slightly higher variable expenses.

Same bottom line.

What a no-brainer.

I think we’ll find that many of these employers are not raising their offered wages because their employees “don’t deserve” more money. It’s less to do with finances then keeping everybody in their place.

I do think greed has a lot to do with this though. The wealthy jerks that own these companies can’t find a way to live on a mere 20 million dollars a year instead of 25 and that is the fault of those horrible workers who have the nerve to slow down their wealth hoarding. You are right through, the rich have spent more than a century making sure the lower classes are too busy fighting and blaming each other to notice who is really to blame. They even got the middle class to blame the poor for their poverty and fight against unions and raising their own wages.

I hope that the pandemic really drives home who needs to be paying who.

On the vaccination front, San Diego County is 45.6% fully vaccinated. 63.8% of the population has had at least one shot. These numbers apply to the population age 16 and above.

The numbers are not bad the it does seem that the will to be vaccinated by the young is not keeping up with the supply. The county currently reports over 417k doses waiting to be administered, much higher than just a couple of weeks ago.

I go in for my second Moderna shot this week, so I’ll be moved over to the fully vaccinated column soon. But we need a much higher number in the fully vaccinated condition to really drive the infection numbers to near extinction.

Realizing there will be those who will never be vaccinated, it seems that SARS-Cov-2 is going to be with us forever.

I guess the goal is to make Covid-19 rare enough that hospitals are barely affected by it.

That’s pretty much the more-or-less unspoken policy of the Czech Republic. The goal is to keep it down at a manageable level where the healthcare system doesn’t end up completely overwhelmed. And yes, there’s still a sizeable chunk of the Czech population that won’t get vaccinated - sadly, conspiracy theories and Russian disinfo have seized the minds of many here.

The one’s refusing to get vaccinated are also the ones demanding everything open up at full capacity with no mask mandate, when the CDC just confirmed that the virus is airborne, you can catch it from someone more than 6 feet from you, and it accumulates in poorly ventilated indoor spaces. Its like they want to get sick.

The young good-looking Gupta who does pandemic talk on MSNBC says waiving the patents doesn’t help with one of the current problems… there’s a limit to the existence of the ingredients for manufacturing vaccines. Waiving patents for more companies to be allowed to make the vaccine would create intense competition for who gets those ingredients, without necessarily increasing the total worldwide production.

I’m sitting in a parking lot down the street from Driscoll’s church, drinking a bottle of tea and resting during church. They’re still doing Scientology Sign Tech (send someone out with a sign that says “Honk if you love Jesus). Older parking lot dude told younger sign waver dude to ignore me. I had a young woman tell me I was rude and divisive (I’ll pull out the vid when I get home).

When I drive back, I’m going to park in the Via Linda park’s lot and walk over because Driscoll’s 9 am attendees are clogging up the neighborhood streets.

He could not get it on Lag B’omer so now he is aiming for Shavuot. I do not think it is going to happen.

Well, 45 Jews died on Lag B’Omer so he’s probably delighted about that.

I’m sure he’s got a bunch of Nazi tattoos on his sleazy body.

Thanks for the mental picture. I’ll be right back.

Happy Mothers day. All you Moms deserve immense credit for raising us, sometimes when it was inhumanly hard to pull off. Dads and offspring? Happy Sunday. Make it an amazing Moms day.

We must admit 25% of us (at least) bought into the right-wing/Trumpist denial and or conspiracy theories as relates to Covid and the vaccine. Shot with a Beer? Ingenious yet not quite gonna cut it. Can’t get a job and hate unemployment/food help? Suddenly the vaccine looks acceptable. It’s really too bad the “one and done” J & J vaccine had that very rare side effect.
It does not help that mask guidance varies so much either…

One of my son’s friends got the vaccine, but his mom is putting up on Facebook that she will never get the vaccine, so the planned wedding reception - he got married last year in a tiny ceremony - May not include mom.

Best of luck to your boy. Cracked teeth can heal - especially in young people.

One of them got pushed back a bit, so we will see what needs to be done.

The New Yorker exposes another Xtian radical in Pennsylvania.

On a Monday afternoon in February, at the statehouse, Mastriano stood at a lectern, wearing a gray suit and a yellow tie, and gave a speech celebrating the first day of the Fast of Jonah. He spoke of the Assyrian Christians who were forced by isis to flee Iraq, and compared them to early American settlers: “The parallels between the people of ancient Assyria as well as those Quakers of William Penn’s ancestry, who settled Pennsylvania, are likewise profound.” Following Mastriano’s speech, Tim Kearney, a Democratic state senator, addressed his colleagues via Zoom. He called for further investigation into Mastriano’s role in inciting violence at the Capitol, quoting a claim that Mastriano had made a day before the insurrection that Republicans “were in a death match” with Democrats. He said, “If you call for a death match with your political opponents, you cannot be surprised when people turn to violence.”

Good wishes here for a successful outcome: hopefully if it’s just “loose” (not cracked or broken) it can heal back in place (incisors can be a PITA to fix).

My daughter in Israel called to wish me Happy Mother’s Day. We chatted about her very gifted son Sammy who came to visit last week. Her oldest son, Israel, was at Meron on that fateful night but missed the disaster because his group left early.
