I AM THE SHAMAN

Yon wheeling of great stars has cast a silver web around my heart
On an Elfin Sea in a Ship of Filigree
And look upon her prow - a sign upon her brow
She guides us on our way when hearts they go astray

Lorelei Lorelei who will dry your pretty eyes
Lorelei as you fly around those starry skies
Lorelei why O why why O why O Lorelei

Yeah Mon - I am The Shaman
Yeah Mon - I am The Shaman
Yeah Mon - I am The Shaman
Yeah Mon - I am The Shaman

All those wheeling of great stars they cast a spell on me
As I wander through the stars Linda Love and me
I don’t know how I got here but I know where I go
As I wander all I know all I know

Yeah Mon - I am The Shaman
Yeah Mon - I am The Shaman
Yeah Mon - I am The Shaman
Yeah Mon - I am The Shaman

Yeah. People frequently point to the Eisenhower era as being the last time Republicans were decent, but that’s a mistake IMO. Even back then, there were clear differences between people like Eisenhower and the Spiritual Leaders of the Party. Enough so that Eisenhower was clearly a better person than many in his party, and was called a communist by them for his trouble.

I have no problems with Republicans of the Teddy Roosevelt era, so sometime shortly after that the party became committed to its path of degeneration. IMO it was already worthless in the 1920s and this first round of rot was exposed by the Great Depression.

Then what happens?

If an Order to Show Cause comes down, then they go before the judge and get to beg and plead why they should not be held in contempt of court, and/or fined for attorney’s fees and court costs for wasting the court’s time.

IMO all election related suits by Republicans should face a preemptive order to show cause. Trump should also face this barrier if he wants to sue anyone. These people are frivolous and vexatious litigants, and their abuse of the courts needs to end.

I remember reading, though I don’t remember where, that Ike chose to run as a Republican simply because he felt the Democrats had been in power for a long time and his two terms might kill off the Republicans. Now we might think that’s a GOOD thing now but at the time he looked at our system as needing two fully different parties. But the reality is that the Republicans after 1877 were not worth a shit. Never forget that the GOP bosses made Teddy Vice President as a way to castrate his political ambitions not thinking that McKinley would be assassinated. He was the exception that proves the rule. Just look at Taft.

The Democrats after 1877 also had big issues (especially since they were the bad guys in the compromise of 1877), so I don’t think you had the clear-cut good vs. evil distinction between the parties back then that is so characteristic of US 21st century politics.

I’ve mentioned before that I think the US is only governable when the two parties agree on how racist the country should be, and the compromise of 1877 is one of those points of agreement (i.e., each state could be as racist as it pleased, as long as there wan’t anything too clearly analogous to slavery).

More than 100 Republicans, including some former elected officials, are preparing to release a letter this week threatening to form a third party if the Republican Party does not make certain changes,” the New York Times reports.

“The statement is expected to take aim at Donald J. Trump’s stranglehold on Republicans, which signatories to the document have deemed unconscionable.”

I really don’t like Liz Cheney, but what she’s doing, for whatever reason, is critical. If the entire GOP lined up behind the big lie I think we could be in for big trouble. Now, we may still be in for big trougle; and Liz may later play a role in that big trouble; but for now they have to dispute the truth in the open, and that’s all that matters.

I think Cheney’s angle is simply that she expects to outlast Trumpism. It’s not unreasonable. Trump is old, has no heir apparent, and might even get dragged into court.

I don’t think that’s such a no-brainer. The only thing Republicans care about is power, and the only near-term threat to that power is forming a third party to draw non-Trumpists away from Trump.

Meanwhile, any anti-Trump Republican that tries to reform he GOP from within will just be ignored.

OOPS…

Caitlyn Jenner caught in lie about voting in 2020

Republican gubernatorial candidate Caitlyn Jenner was asked about her vote in 2020 and whether she cast a ballot for her longtime friend Donald Trump.

Speaking to CNN’s Dana Bash, Jenner explained that she opted to go golfing instead because she “couldn’t get excited” about the ballot measures. It’s unclear if Jenner knew at the time that voting records are public.

“I didn’t even vote,” Jenner said. “Out here in California, it’s like, why vote for a Republican president? It’s just not going to work. I mean, it’s overwhelming.”

Say boys and girls! Let’s ask the Los Angeles County Registrar/Recorder to see if this jerk told the truth…

That’s not even the worst of it. As we’re seeing with Liz Cheney, any anti-Trump Republican who tries to reform the GQP will be destroyed and cast out from the party. The GQP cult is literally forming the third party as we speak, through their own actions. The battle lines are drawn, the pieces are in motion, the die has been cast, the Rubicon crossed.

The survey’s results were especially bleak for retired Olympic gold medalist Jenner, as just 6% of Californians who took part in the survey said they would vote to have her replace Newsom — a vast majority of Democrats, Republicans and unaffiliated or independent voters said they would not be inclined to support her candidacy.

“Even among Republicans, only 13% say they’d be inclined to vote for her,” DiCamillo said. “It’s a very poor showing.”

Online moderation is usually ticky-tack language policing etc. that lets neo-Nazis and KKKluxers slide if they just leave off the “kill the ____” part of their agenda. Meanwhile decent people who get upset at this can very easily get banned if they aren’t ice-cold emotionally when fighting back against this shit.

Cheney’s powerful speech may have supported the legitimacy of the last election and she may be paying a political price for this support, but both she and other House Republicans who supposedly support democracy failed to vote for the House voting rights bills. Maybe I am mistaken on this but I don’t think they have denounced the voting suppression legislation being passed nationwide in order to prevent Democrats from winning again. Yes, we should applaud her denunciation of Trump and GOP lies — but the applause should remain muted unless she also joins the efforts to expand the franchise and stop these full-throated efforts to silence people of color.

Only one of those things is actually true: there were two working vaccines on Inauguration Day. Everything else is absolutely horseshit.

There was no vaccine distribution plan beyond “Dump the vaccine vials at the local airport and let the state figure it out.”

An economy set to boom? The economy contracted by 3.5% in 2020, the worst loss since WWII. So even moderate growth in 2021 would be a “boom” by comparison.

And peace in the Middle East? A bunch of “agreements” backed by arms sales does not peace make.

There were “talks”…by which I mean Israel talked about how they (with US backing) were going to help themselves to even more Palestinian land, in exchange for the “promise” of developmental aid for the Palestinians. The Palestinians never had a seat at these “talks” and outright rejected the “offer” that Bibi and Jared were making with somebody else’s money.

It depends what you’re measuring.

Last year had more job losses, especially in leisure and entertainment sectors, but production in other sectors was pretty static, and the health care and funeral industries and on-line shopping saw big increases. In 2008, it was the banks and mortgages/foreclosures, the stock market, credit froze, the auto industry flatlined, construction came to a standstill… basically anything that relied on credit.

I’m not sure if this was mentioned here, but what Hamas and Palestinian Islamic Jihad are trying to do right by firing hundreds of rockets at a time at Israel, is determine and exceed the capacity of Iron Dome.

Iron Dome is a system that Israel uses to destroy short range (up to 70km) rockets launched at Israel. The Iron Dome system is divided into batteries. (Probably 10-15.) Each battery has several launchers (probably 4), a control system, and a radar. Each launcher has a load of about 20 interceptors that it fires at incoming rockets. The radar can only track so many targets and guide so many interceptors at a time.

That is why they are launching 100+ rockets at Israel at a time.

While Hamas and PIJ have a many rockets, they do not have a massive number of them. Nor do they have the strategic depth to fire them over many days before they are shut down by Israel artillery fire, aircraft, or ground troops.

However, there is one other local Iranian client that has hundreds of thousands of rockets, tens of thousand of para-militaries, and thousands of square miles of territory from which to fire them. That is Hezbollah.

What’s going on in the GQP ranks is that the party prepared for a repeat of ‘09 and have instead found themselves in uncharted waters. When McCain lost in ‘08, the party readily embraced the racist uproar that was the “Tea Party” and used it to drive their base into a frothing rage for ‘10. In the long run this was a massive mistake, as it ended up costing them a lot of the party stalwarts (Cantor, Boehner, Ryan, etc) but it also gave rise to the beginning of what we now know as “Trumpism.”

Thing is, “Trumpism” could just as easily have been “Cruzism,” as the two of them accounted for 70%+ of the GQP primary votes cast in ‘16. If Trump hadn’t run, it’s probable that it would have ended up being Cruz’s election to lose. The only key difference is if Cruz had lost either election, he would probably not have turned that loss into an attack upon America itself and declared that the party agree he was the “winner” of the election lest he threaten to start up a “Patriot Party” to start challenging incumbent Congresscritters.

But let’s not fool ourselves, the Cheney brand of “loyal opposition” doesn’t oppose voter suppression laws or support Biden in any way. What they are are the business wing of the party that is scared shitless of the long-term damage done by the party embracing a failure like Trump. The order of things was that Trump was supposed to concede, the GQP were supposed to accept that they’d lost even if they didn’t agree with the results, and period between now and next November was supposed to be about “politics as usual.” Instead, everything the party does is through the lens of their loyalty to Trump, which is poisonous when the man’s favorability is lying on the bottom of the Challenger Deep.

I agree with you that the donor class has a major say in the behavior of the GOP. But many of them may have very narrow interests centering around money. And others, such as the Koch network, may have been among those who set up the current version of this GOP. It will be interesting to see how the donors react to the idea that Trump is stealing all of their hard earned bribes.

Trump was supposed to be a meat puppet, just like the party treated Dubya: Someone who was elected on a platform he was never going to make happen, surrounded by party men who’d steer him in the direction the party wanted, with little agency to do more than sign the bills the the Repub Congressional majority churned out.

Which is why the last four years are such a thorn in their sides, because he went rogue and did enormous damage to the party’s power base. He was supposed to be little more than a hired thug, and instead he has dreams of being the mafioso himself.

And it took the Cold War to force America to own up to the fact that it could not condemn Communist Oppression in other countries without facing its own racism and legal/educational/economic apartheid at home

IMO all election related suits by Republicans should face a preemptive order to show cause. Trump should also face this barrier if he wants to sue anyone. These people are frivolous and vexatious litigants, and their abuse of the courts needs to end.

Arizona has a “vexatious litigant” law. If a person is deemed “vexatious” they do, in fact, need to get court permission before filing anything. Getting a person labeled vexatious is a pretty hard standard to meet, though.

And this is further evidence that NJ has it right - no one should be allowed to pump their own gas because dumbasses like this don’t get how gasoline works, or that nonapproved containers pose a risk of fire/explosion.

Seriously, the states that are showing the greatest shortages and runs on gasoline are those watching Fox and right wing outfits, while NYC metro (which is the destination of the Colonial Pipeline in Linden NJ) has seen no disruption. Weird. Seriously, no disruptions here. We drive. A lot. And no shortages.

Thing is, if you have a helicopter fly over Costco gas today, you’d see long lines.

That’s what you’d see EVERY FUCKING DAY since Costco gas always has long lines b/c the gas prices there are invariably 5-10 cents per gallon cheaper than other stations in the region.

Picked up a couple of black cod from the docks on Sunday. Had fish & chips Sunday night with one and marinated the filets of the second in miso, mirin, sherry(no sake) for two days. Basically the Nobu miso cod recipe. Tasted pretty good, but the black cod is so soft I think I may try it with a firmer fish like ling cod or halibut.

I was actually just thinking Hamas has been building up a stockpile, probably starting not long after the conclusion of the 2014 conflict. That’s a little over six years, give or take a few months. If they’re making their own in production facilities (so to speak), they could keep this going for quite awhile.

Eisenhower was the only Republican presidential candidate that my father ever voted for.

Given that he was raised on the Louisiana politics of Huey Long, he did not suffer political fools gladly; down ticket he would vote for selected Republican candidates.

They’re just afraid the US government will name them a terrorist organization and come down on them like a ton of bricks. Personally, if a couple of them fell out of 5th story windows I would be ok with that. There is a specially place in hell for hackers and people who release malicious viruses into the wild.

Cyber is a domain of war now, per US national strategy and NATO policy (and in Russian national strategy as well). This has clarified a lot of legal issues about retaliation: a sufficiently bad cyber attack on national infrastructure can justify a proportionate response with other means in line with the laws of war. In this case, though, it’s fairly clear that DarkSide is being protected or harbored by Russia, and nobody has died yet, so that ain’t happening any time soon.

A lot of weak response to cyberattacks historically was due to the fact that it was legally a criminal matter, and most often an international one with unclear attribution. It’s like having tanks driving across your border, and all you could do was give them speeding and parking tickets.

Yup! I’m also wondering what the regulations are for transporting and storing over 300 gallons of gasoline. (Looks like he has 6@55gallon emergency water storage tubs.) Particularly in a single family home (I would hope not a multifamily building) in a suburban or urban environment. And because of the fact that gasohol attracts water, also in disposing of hundreds of gallons of unusable gasoline.

Not withstanding potential static electricity discharge due to gas containers not being on pavement while being filled.

His other immediate problem is that a 55 gal drum filled with gasoline weighs approx 330 lbs. A full plastic gasoline drum not on a pallet is a weighty issue.

Some good news to brighten up everyone’s day.

A Minnesota judge has ruled that there were aggravating factors in the death of George Floyd, paving the way for the possibility of a longer sentence for Derek Chauvin, according to an order made public Wednesday.

In his ruling dated Tuesday, Judge Peter Cahill found that Chauvin abused his authority as a police officer when he restrained Floyd last year and that he treated Floyd with particular cruelty. He also cited the presence of children when he committed the crime and the fact Chauvin was part of a group with at least three other people.

That being said, it’s still unlikely that Chauvin would get more than 30 years, even with the aggravating factors.

As we have noted multiple times, Cheney is playing the long game here. She foresees a time when the GOP will no longer be the cult of Trump, and she wants to be in a position to assume leadership once that era commences. She actually welcomes today’s vote, since it will compel every Republican member of the House to go on the record as to whether or not they believe the Big Lie (and whether they value that over loyalty to their party). There will come a time when Cheney Republicans and/or Democrats will wield those votes like a weapon.
