Becca Stevens - “The seed of this song came from a desire to inspire our male counterparts to do their part in advocating for gender equality. When Mike and I were writing the lyrics, we were addressing this theme from a perspective of two people working together at a common goal, and that through this kind of teamwork progress is made. In the creative process we addressed this idea of teamwork from different angles; sometimes working side by side, sometimes holding the other up, and sometimes sitting back and just listening.”

“Over The Line” Lyrics
I can lift you up
I can lift you up
I can lift you up

I know you’d like to think you’re on our side
And now I want to see you prove you’re right
First to speak on what you think I like
But I need you listening tonight
Love is a wave that breaks the blind
Doing this takes us more than time
I need you (I can lift you up)
To push this over the line
I can lift you up now baby
Soon (I can lift you up)
Whether by chance or design
We’ll take what we’ve been denied
Now I know your heart is in the right (Now I know your heart is in the right)
It’s time to set your sympathy alight
You’ve always been the first one to agree (First to agree)
Now I need you in the fight with me

You can choose (I can lift you up)
To push this over the line
I can lift you up now baby
Soon (I can lift you up)
Whether by chance or design
We’ll take what we’ve been denied

You (I can lift you up)
Can push this over the line
I can lift you up now baby
Soon (I can lift you up)
Whether by chance or design
We’ll take what we’ve been denied
You can choose (I can lift you up)
To push this over the line
I can lift you up now (I can lift you up now baby)
Whether by chance or design (I can lift you up)
We’ll take what we’ve been denied

You (I can lift you up)
Will push this over the line
I can lift you up now baby
You (I can lift you up)
Whether by chance or design
We’ll take what we’ve been denied

Yes, that’s what I had to do yesterday. See the long string of comments I left.

I had to tell OSX to explicitly Always Trust that same cert.

I don’t really want to “always trust” something in the world of computers, but that where we’re at today.

Ah, I missed that thread! Firefox seems to be maintaining its own certificate cache, but it will probably expire there too pretty soon.

Chrome isn’t the problem - Letsencrypt let their old root certificate expire and just installed a new one that relies on a new protocol that older devices don’t support. Apparently the possibility that they were causing chaos for many, many users never entered their heads.

Arguably, Firefox is the “problem” in that it is not reporting in a timely fashion when the root certificate expires. LetsEncrypt’s poorly thought-through decision is more of a contributing factor.

So my Chrome seems to be working fine, without my doing anything techie (except the bare minimum of updating Chrome when new version is released and tells me). So can someone explain using very simple language why I’m ok and others aren’t? I am using an ancient computer passed on to me by my sister, but one that has Windows 10 installed.

No. Let’s encrypt did it right.

It the TLS library authors who screwed up

Let’s encrypt made the naif error of thinking that people would follow the standard.

The operating system version is the key here. Older operating systems are unable to update their certificates to record that LetsEncrypt renewed theirs. The issue is that the version of MacOS that is incompatible with the new LetsEncrypt certificate is new enough that many people appear to still be using it.

An even larger issue is that Apple aggressively grandfathers their older machines. I’d happily upgrade to the latest Mac OS but my Mac Pro is too old. It still runs great, and this was not a cheap box.

There are hack solutions that would let me use a more recent Mac OS, which tells me that Apple could continue to support their older hardware, they just choose not to bother with it. Which sucks.

I understand why they don’t; it’s an increasing amount of effort to support the newer OS’s on older hardware, as opposed to just cutting them off. It’s a thing with iOS, too, and let me tell you, that SUUUUCKED when we got cut off at iOS 6 when they did that massive changeover. However, the security implications of neither supporting the old OS, nor of building their new OS to be a little more backwards compatible, are staggering. And this is a great example of why.

re: #1 Charles Johnson

The problem isn’t that the Identrust “DST Root X3” certificate has expired.

The problem is that Let’s encrypyt, using the existing protocols, issued certificates signed by “DST Root X3” and also by their own “ISRG Root X1” certificate.

Nowadays everyone (or almost everyone) accepts certificates signed by “ISRG Root X1” (aka Let’s encrypt).

But what happens if a certificate is signed by a valid certificate (e.g. “ISRG Root X1”) AND ALSO an expired certificate, e.g. “DST Root X3”“? Well, it turns out that some old TLS libraries decide that the certificate is bad.

Let’s encrypt were naif, they thought people would follow the documentation.

I understand the software issue. But if, like me, you have a Mac Pro that can’t be upgraded to a compatible version of Mac OS, the fact that their certificate expired with no alternative is indeed the problem. Force-trusting their expired certificate is the only way to solve that problem right now, if I want to keep using the internet.

Yeah. It’s fundamentally a lack of support issue; sure, there’s an underlying software bug, but that bug wouldn’t be a problem if there was proper legacy support from a company that is notorious for its emphasis on planned obsolescence.

No.

I said I’d be gone, but I can’t let this go.

Let’s encrypt certificates are signed by a certificate that has expired and by a certificate that hasn’t expired.

All systems that are not decades old accept the new certificate.

The problem is that some oldish implementations of the whole TLS/certificate thing (openssl 1.something and Gnu TLS version something and a Android TLS version wgho the fuck knows) all make the error of deciding that if a certificate is signed by an expired certificate then it’s bad, without considering that the certificate is also signed by a valid certificate.

Sorry for being a geek, but this is my life. Unfortunately.

‘Relocated Items” are things you installed in the previous OS version, that may be incompatible with the new OS. The updater moves them here so they can’t crash the new OS. If you look at the names you can usually get an idea what they were. It’s almost always safe to trash that folder, once you’ve inspected it.

President Biden told the House Democratic caucus that bipartisan infrastructure package “ain’t going to happen until we reach an agreement on the next piece of legislation,” Punchbowl News reports.

Republicans will obviously force her to carry it to term since they think it will vote for them by default when it comes of age.

“Anencephalic” is an accurate description of the Republican caucus.

According to the article, she went out of state for the abortion, because she had the resources. Too many others don’t have that option.

I like his and Roslynn’s wedding photo; it looks like Mickey Rooney and Judy Garland.

re: #61 Charles Johnson

It’s one of those things that in the big picture of our data driven world that often gets overlooked - the huge installed base of older systems that people use that cannot move to the latest operating systems.

In my mind, designing a security infrastructure, such as the certificate environment for websites, without planning for backwards compatibility for decades was a big mistake.

When I worked for the DoD, we had systems still in place that were using 40 year old tech. One has to design for multi-decade life cycles.

What surprises me is that Texan women are overrunning Oklahoma facilities. Is Oklahoma different from other Southern GOP states when it comes to choice?

It probably has more to do with proximity than law.

So Bill Maher has as his panel Matt Taibbi and Katherine Mangu-Ward, editor-in-chief of Reason Magazine. It seems as though he doesn’t want people who challenge his ignorant libertarian philosophy and his disparagement of education. Sometimes he has insights but rarely.
