I live in Warren Co. Pa. It has the lowest vaccination rate and highest infection rate in the state. It’s also lily white and redneck. The ignorance and stupidity here is stunning.

correction, sort of:

a couple of days ago

i said
um H.R. Haldeman?
chief of staff? check
prosecuted? check
went to jail? check

meadows: not a precedent

the other possible angle that i missed was that last time a current or former representative was held in contempt of Congress. that was 1832 (sam houston).

so not really a ‘precedent’ either

of course wapo was trying to say no matter what this could ‘hurt’ the doj somehow.

they’re still wrong.

I guess Pope Francis is going all in on attempting to snuff out the Latin mass movement and its attendant hyperconservatism and enforcing the norms agreed to at Vatican II.

ROME — Pope Francis has approved further clarifications regarding restrictions on the traditional Latin Mass in an effort to ensure that liturgical reform is “irreversible” and that liturgical celebrations adhere to the changes made after the Second Vatican Council.

The clarifications, published Dec. 18, ban priestly ordinations and confirmations in the old rite and limit the frequency in which priests who receive a dispensation to celebrate the traditional Latin Mass can do so.

*snip*

In explaining his original decision to reimpose restrictions on the traditional Latin Mass earlier this year, Francis lamented that it had become a source of division in the church.

Since then, the decree has become a lightning rod for a vocal minority group of Catholics who still favor the traditional Latin Mass, many of whom also have expressed skepticism or even outright rejection of the reforms of Vatican II and of the legitimacy of Francis.

Among the reforms of Vatican II was the approval of the translation of the liturgy into the vernacular, in an effort to make the Mass more accessible and involve greater participation of the laity. In 2007, Pope Benedict XVI relaxed restrictions on the Latin Mass in an effort to foster greater unity with breakaway Catholic groups.

It’s going to be interesting to see if we see a new wave of splitting off (e.g. the SSPX, which split off when Marcel Lefebvre consecrated four bishops in 1988) or actual sedevacantism (e.g., SSPV, an offshoot of the SSPX) or follow Richard Williamson (one of the bishops consecrated by Lefebvre, later outright excommunicated twice from the Catholic church, also a convicted Holocaust denier) or some other person/group. Let’s just say there are a lot of places that people disagreeing with Francis can go; it’s just a question of how far OUT they want to go.

At the hospital where The Husband is right now there are 660 beds. As of yesterday, there were 165 covid patients. Of those, 80 percent are unvaccinated. The head nurse on this floor told me this morning that there are 50 patients in the ER and there are not enough rooms for them. They built a huge ER here that opened last year. They only added about 30 beds to the actual hospital. There’s a ton or remodeling happening here, but it’s going to be 2024 before a lot of it gets done. I can’t even imagine working in this field in any capacity right now.

CNN YouTube has a clip entitled “Columnist says Biden should announce he isn’t running in 2024”. I wish I could see the number of dislikes it’s getting because the comments are not appreciating this kind of vapid reporting. I didn’t watch the clip.

So over in Great Brexit: the Brexit minister has resigned because BoJo is being … BoJo.

And those right-wing NI Unionists are huffing and puffing because they can see the writing on the wall:

Furious response from DUP over Northern Ireland protocol

The government’s retreat from its hardline position in negotiations with the EU over Brexit arrangements in Northern Ireland has elicited a furious response from the most senior unionist in the House of Lords.

Lord Dodds, the former deputy leader of the Democratic Unionist party, has issued a veiled threat of “action” unless it restores the option of pulling the plug on the Northern Ireland protocol by using the article 16 process.

“Every day that passes with the protocol in place is another day which sees Northern Ireland and Great Britain move further apart. This is unsustainable.

[…]

What’s the DUP going to do, hold it’s breath?

If it leaves the government coalition, that will simply be the demise of BoJo. If the Labour party ever wins back control of Parliament the Labour folk won’t care about the DUP.

All the DUP can do is return to terrorism. I wouldn’t put it past them, but no one outside of their little circle really cares about them.

And this is how the UK will finally come to the full realization about Brexit: it was all a show for right wing nut jobs, that in the end made life of UK citizens more difficult.

Former Trump adviser Peter Navarro revealed what appeared to be a significant plot to overthrow a legitimate presidential election in an interview with Steve Bannon.

Said Navarro: “You were the hero on J6, Steve. You were the guy who had the strategy to go up to Capitol Hill. Pence was the quarterback. We had 100 people working on the team who were going to make sure we remanded the results back to the battleground states.”

They never know when to shut up

It’s not for everyone. It would get way too crowded.

The county I was in had 7 people per square mile, average. People, as ever, everywhere, bunch up in towns, leaving the views.

i remember even as a kid thinking, when the electic guitar gets its lead, that it was the first time I’d heard authentic rock guitar on the television. Of course, I discovered afterwards that Buffalo Springfield, for instance, had been on Mannix earlier, but my early remembrance of rock guitar on television programs was some shitty lead that would get produced by the network orchestra because they were too cheap to pay licensing fees for real music to play when radios came on.

Still think that TV themes of the 1960’s were overall a cut above following decades.

I suspect that composers were working from two fundamental factions in American music: Jazz, and post Romantic classical (that so influenced movie theme songs.)

The 1960’s themes were often upbeat (see Star Trek, etc.), with a sense of energy. Or just plain old bar songs (Gilligan’s Island.)

I think the 1980s and 1990’s TV themes suffered from the “cool jazz” vibe, aka easy-listening.

re: #136 Dangerman

New COVID-19 cases detected with the Omicron variant are doubling every 1.5 to 3 days in areas where there is community spread, Axios reports.

So, I did a thing.

Yesterday I went to Michigan to see a doctor, and get a COVID booster.

Firstly, in the first 30 minutes I was there I saw more dead deer than masked humans.

I get to the doctor’s office… Patients in the waiting room, a few without masks. Some went back to the rooms to see the doctor, more unmasked came in. Since I didn’t want to start a big thing, but because I was pissed as hell, I wrote on my phone

“Could you call me when it’s my time? I’ll be right outside.

I’m super uncomfortable being in a room with unmasked people.”

And she immediately handed me a post it. I went outside and she calls me in a short time later.

The first person I see is the X-Ray girl. No mask.

The doc comes in. No mask.

I got the shot I wanted and left.

Their website said they had COVID protocols in place. REALLY? What are those protocols, exactly?

I go to CVS, maybe half are masked. All the pharma staff were. Got my shot, Moderna (my two prior were Pfizer). Dude warns me my arm is gonna hurt tomorrow (which is today) and I’d be sick as shit for a day or two. Ok. Fair warning. I’ll accept that for being able to breathe on my own.

I go back across the bridge into Canada and was talking to the border agent. On Tuesday they’re reinstating the PCR test mandate to enter Canada. I just eeked in getting all the stuff I’d ordered to my UPS Store expecting the border to have opened two months ago, my flu shot, my wrist shot and my booster shot. Thank goodness. I may not go back for who knows how long.

Today, I felt fine. My arm started hurting a little an hour ago. Other than that, nothing yet.

I’m going to self quarantine for 14 days because God only knows I’ve encountered more maskless people in the 6 hours I was there than I have in the past almost 2 years. Everyone up here wears masks (you may encounter a kook now and again but it’s rare). I won’t let my MIL come over until I’m sure I’m not contagious. She turns 90 next month and I love her to pieces.

Going into Michigan felt really uncomfortable. People just living they lives like nothing is going on. It’s scary as shit.

Oh and one house had a pristine Trump/Pence yard sign up. 👀😳

Yeah, yesterday was a trip.

There will probably be an update on this guy at Sorry Antivaxxer soon.

Washington state Sen. Doug Ericksen dies after battle with COVID (Seattle Times, 4:36PM PST)

State Sen. Doug Ericksen, a stalwart conservative, former leader of Donald Trump’s campaign in Washington and an outspoken critic of COVID-19 emergency orders, died Friday. He was 52.

Ericksen had said last month that he tested positive for the coronavirus while on a trip to El Salvador, although his cause of death was not immediately confirmed on Saturday.

“We are heartbroken to share that our husband and father passed away,” Ericksen’s wife, Tasha, and his two daughters said in a prepared statement Saturday. “Please keep our family in your prayers and thank you for continuing to respect our privacy in this extremely difficult time.”

Lawmakers reacted late Saturday afternoon with shock and sadness.

There is nothing shocking about an antivaxxer dying of a preventable disease. It is entirely predictable.

He is not high enough in the hierarchy of conservatism’s model to matter. He was sacrificed to kill more people, sort of like sacrificing a pawn in chess to capture a more valuable piece or position.

Story from yesterday
Calls for Colorado boycott grow after 110-year verdict against Latino trucker

Rogel Lazaro Aguilera Mederos, 25, was convicted of vehicular homicide and other charges by a Jefferson County jury on Oct. 15 in connection with the April 2019 crash on Interstate 70 west of Denver, The Denver Post reported.

During his sentencing on Dec. 13, Aguilera Mederos reportedly wept and said he can’t sleep and thinks about the victims “all the time.” He also said he wasn’t a criminal.

Aguilera Mederos testified that the brakes on his semitrailer failed before he plowed into vehicles that had slowed because of another wreck in the Denver suburb of Lakewood.

Prosecutors argued he could have used one of several runaway ramps as his truck barreled down from the mountains. The chain-reaction wreck ruptured gas tanks, causing flames that consumed several vehicles and melted parts of the highway just after it descends from the mountains west of Denver.

In response to the brewing boycott, which has taken on the hashtag #NoTrucksToColorado, the Colorado Motor Carriers issued the following statement on Twitter: “Feel for driver. #NoTrucksToColorado has some info that is not accurate. Not mech. failure - brakes gave way due to inexper. driver traveling in mtns above posted speeds/ not gearing down — overheated brakes gave way. He knew of hot brakes yet bypassed runaway truck ramp.”

This didn’t just suddenly happen today.

re: #183 Michele: Out of the closet, Into the fire

That’s not a video of a strike for anything. It’s weather related icy road stuff.
A trucker strike, especially today, will not be a convoy of trucks sitting. If they boycott Colorado it will mean shipments sit unshipped going out and deliveries into Colorado will take longer. And if you are company and not independent, it won’t matter. Unions don’t support owner operators and O/O don’t support Unions.
So it will fall to independent truckers to do a boycott. And half of them will just make more money and eff the boycott.
If the Teamsters got involved it might go somewhere.
Truckers today have to put up with more crap than you can possibly imagine.
Part of the reason they have a driver shortage is if that wheel ain’t turning it ain’t making no money and money is why that truck was bought.
Home weekly. Very weakly.
And any cop can wave you over and just ruin your day.
When I was still driving there was a rollover of a semi on an overpass. He was hauling huge coils of paper. All you can do with that inside a trailer is brace and keep it from shifting.
When he put it on it’s side, the coils burst through the roof and one crushed a car and killed the driver below.
They locked him up on the spot. Took him away. That sent a chill down my spine.
Just carted him away. Never heard what happened, but damn.

Conservatism always tends toward genocide.

That’s why my state governor says the same thing, long after this came out.

Ohio’s governor has activated the National Guard to help overwhelmed hospitals. Gov. DeWine still will not impose mask mandates or require vaccines.

Nebraska’s hospital system is about to be overwhelmed. So far Gov. Ricketts won’t even bother with the National Guard; he’s too busy fighting in court with our tax money against getting the National Guard vaccinated.

Yeah I have a friend who is a long haul driver. He quit his last job when they started to replaced tires on his tractor, with retreads, in violation of the law. Stuff like that probably played a part in his decision.
