Today’s program from our podcasting affiliate, The Bob Cesca Show:

Michael Hiltzik vs Bill Maher — Michael is a Pulitzer Prize winning journalist and the author of a new op/ed in the Los Angeles Times titled “These pundits and pols say they’re ‘done with COVID.’ But COVID’s not done with us.” He’s also the author of seven books including his latest, out now: “Iron Empires: Robber Barons, Railroads, and the Making of Modern America.” You can follow his work on Twitter here. Today we talked about the Pretend-COVID-Is-Over take, marketed by Bill Maher, Bari Weiss, and others and why it’s so counterfactual and delusional. I hate the term ‘counterfactual’ - it’s just a dodge to deny reality.

Sheesh. I leave for an hour, and now we’re talking about soup Nazis. This is the problem when a major political party is 1) completely bugfuck nuts, and 2) driven by the power of social media and trying to get TikToks and sound bites.

IOW, rich people got scared that they’d have to share their neighborhood with poor folks and threatened to pull their money out of the community unless it agreed to keep the poors out.

From the bit of Faux I got exposed to today, the new talking point is “WE WERE RIGHT ALL ALONG ABOUT COVID! END THE MANDATES! WE WANNA GO BACK TO NORMAL!!!”

This included totally ignoring that the Surgeon General mentioned nothing at all about masks when testifying about the psychological challenges children have faced due to the pandemic to declare that the driving force behind those challenges is mask mandates in schools.

My father hates cats, and always said that he thinks they’re sneaky.

I never saw it before, but Mork is a sneaky cat. He walks low to the ground if he thinks he’s being watched, and will freeze to try to not be seen.

He’s also a snuggly cat that will jump into my lap and demand attention, and scratch on me in the night to get some petting.

When I was a kid back in the 90s, all my uncles worked for either one of the major factories in SE KY or were in business for themselves (ex: one of them owned a tree-trimming business). They made good money, had benefits that took care of their families, and even had money to buy stuff that my folks (career Navy) were reluctant to splurge on.

In the decades since, every one of them has ended up basically crippling themselves working whatever jobs they could find once those factories shut down. One ended up nearly dead from a widow-maker heart attack from all the stress he was under doing home renovations, another had to retire early due to his own heart-related issues, another is practically in a wheelchair before 60, and the last developed MS which is slowly making it impossible for him to work.

All just to make enough to survive in a small KY town in which hi-speed internet is a new-fangled innovation.

This depends but in most cases getting back your Wordle streak simply isn’t possible. The local file once deleted, is permanently deleted from your system. The file won’t show up in the recycle bin and most recovery software will identify it as deleted cache and fail to recover it.

A great many French sailors served as infantry during the Great War. Like the other great powers, France had built a huge battle fleet in the early 1900s, requiring tens of thousands of men to operate. It had not invested so heavily as Britain or Germany, and its ships were not to the same technical standard though. With the coming of war, most of the battleships were basically surplus to requirements and other work was found for their crews.

I want to underline and star the hell out of that. Microsoft Teams is a fucking abomination, worse than Skype for Business in some key ways. They got rid of the ego filter. THEY GOT RID OF THE EGO FILTER. Which means that either I keep all the little “bong bong bong” notifications on all the time so I’ll remember I’m working, or turn them off and take the risk I’m going to miss a notification. With the ego filter, I could go off and get into something that took a bit of time to do or required more concentration, and I wouldn’t be disturbed until someone actually mentioned me. Now I’m on fucking hyper alert and for someone like me, already dealing with anxiety, it’s bullshit.

I would have liked to have been a fly on the wall at the discussion where MSFT developers discussed removing the ego filter, because I would have done a kamikaze flight into that person’s nostrils, in hopes of killing them. Because Teams without an ego filter is a fucking abomination, very bad for mental health, a constant fucking bong bong bong. I absofuckinglutely do not understand why this happened. There are other bad things about Teams, but this is completely the fucking worst.

But it was the case a year ago. Vaccines were starting to become available to the under-65 crowd, the number of new cases was starting to decline from the January peaks, and businesses were “signaling optimism” that they could possibly start rolling back restrictions and mandates by the spring. We were basically told that with the vaccines, we’d be back to “normal” by the summer and the pandemic basically “over” in time for kids to go back to school in the fall.

What changed that? Delta making its way to our shores and eating through the unvaccinated like Skittles. So that we’re now here, over a year later, only the unvaccinated have managed to convince enough of the people they pissed off that the mandates don’t work and we need to just accept thousands of deaths daily as the price of “normal.”

There are 3 genes responsible for it, and it is more common in people of east Asian and European descent apparently. South/West Asian, and Native American/Latino seem to have the lowest percentage with these genes. I didn’t see any info of people of African descent.

I only know for sure of one person that thinks it tastes like soap and he is half Pacific Islander, half eastern European descent.

If you are suggesting the the NYT is a “broken institution” it is not. It is functioning exactly as it intends to under the upcoming fascist right wing theocracy. It is an institution built to survive and make as much money as possible for its owners. A right wing NYT will be a valuable asset to the upcoming Republican Party-led hybrid authoritarian state.

The NYT has been busy adjusting to the new reality for years now, its leadership well aware of the Democratic Party base that refuses to actually come out to vote except in extraordinary circumstances, and a minority right wing voter base that will drag itself over broken glass and barbed wire in order to get to the polls.

Good morning Lizards:

From the New York Times article this morning, their political reporting is terrible:

If Mr. Trump was found to have taken materials with him that were still classified at the time he left the White House, prosecuting him would be extremely difficult and it would pit the Justice Department against Mr. Trump at a time when Attorney General Merrick B. Garland is trying to depoliticize the department.

The department and the F.B.I. also still have significant scars from its investigation into whether Mrs. Clinton mishandled classified information, as the bureau was accused of unfairly tarnishing her and interfering in the 2016 election.

Not only is the story halfway down the page, it concludes that since everyone was mean to Hillary that they shouldn’t try to enforce the law on Donald at all?

I read about a publishing house that pulled a scam like that to get a free translation of a novel: they sent each chapter as a “test chapter” to a number of translators with the promise that if their work was satisfactory, they would get the whole work at a favorable rate, and then just compiled everything that the unwitting translators sent in…

a fantasy of mine
tfg did so much illegal stuff
both before he was president and while presidenting.
a lot of the ‘while president’ crimes were official, office or government related.
i assume he committed generic crimes while president too - say through the trump org.
then there’s the civil stuff

so ‘they’ are analyzing and amassing all this stuff that he did, from all quarters.

it’s a gish gallop of criming.

there is no way to prosecute all of it
there’s no way to single just one thing out as somehow representative of it all

so ‘they’ use this huge ball of evil and go for the 14th amendment, the destroying documents reg, etc to make the case ‘that’s why he can never be president again’

sh-boom

Gotta say, I’m somewhat guilty of this myself. I think the evidence is quite clear that serious Covid is, for the most part, a problem of the unvaccinated. Yes, many people cannot have vaccines or have reduced effectiveness. Yes, vaccinated people are dying every day. What we aren’t saying clearly enough, though, is that unvaccinated people are killing them. Sometimes directly, by transmission, and always indirectly, by refusing to take any preventive measures whatsoever so the pandemic keeps going.

The argument over reducing mask mandates and so forth is a canard. There are no mandates in the US. Nobody cares enough to do anything. We make attempts with federal vaccine mandates and so forth, but any white person who gets upset enough is simply allowed to do whatever he wants, because that is America. Countries that have actual mandates have requirements over who can gather, how many can gather, how many people you can invite to your home, where you have to wear a mask, and so on. America has never had and will never have anything similar. We still talk about it because angry white people cannot stand that anyone might even look at them funny for not wearing a mask or being antisocial, and thus will not stop until everyone is forced to meekly accept their terrible behaviour and praise them for it.

Should we have more mandates and more mitigation measures? Yes, absolutely. That’s what functioning societies do to prevent death and uphold the common good. But America is not a functioning society, it is an armed labour camp where the power of the state is designed to force the lower classes to serve a very wealthy few. Part of that state power is America’s ‘laws’, part is the armed occupation force they call ‘police’ and part of it is the soft power where prevailing US culture is dictated to normalise the experience of average white people and ensure that their worldview is catered to at all costs, so that they feel like they are privileged and everyone else - browns, blacks, gays, foreigners, liberals - are the ‘other’. It’s that last part that is straining right now, because there’s a virus that won’t just infect the blacks and liberals, and white people have to be convinced to just ignore the deaths among their own so they can still feel privileged. They’re doing it, because they always do what their TV tells them to, and they won’t rest until we all do it too so their privilege remains intact.

So we have a situation where the death rate is about 15:1 unvaccinated to vaccinated. It’s not quite that unbalanced, because the clogging of the hospital system is also causing further deaths and health problems, but the death cult that is American conservatism wants it to keep going because their main goal is the death and suffering of the people they hate - us, in other words. To them, 15 of them dying to kill a liberal is fine, because they can pretend really hard that that first number doesn’t exist, and also because they’re bad at maths.

I’m not happy that the pandemic continues unabated. I would be even unhappier if there were actual restrictions that I had to follow, but this being America, there isn’t actually such a thing. I don’t count minor inconveniences like wearing a mask on a plane as a restriction, because it’s not, and it only bothers angry white people for whom taking any action that might benefit someone they hate is an absolute taboo. So given that I and anyone I care about has done the right thing by wearing masks in public and getting their shots, I think I’ll continue to do those things and get together with them.

The Covid fatigue is real. But it’s not fatigue over restrictions, it’s fatigue that I find it harder and harder to care that unvaccinated people are committing murder-suicides daily. And for someone whose main job requirement is to care about people, that’s a very tiring thing.

I read about a publishing house that pulled a scam like that to get a free translation of a novel: they sent each chapter as a “test chapter” to a number of translators with the promise that if their work was satisfactory, they would get the whole work at a favorable rate, and then just compiled everything that the unwitting translators sent in…

Doesn’t seem the translation scam would work out. A translation style needs to be consistent between chapters; otherwise the novel would be very jarring to the readers. Or did they then submit the translations to an editor who would rewrite the text in a consistent style.

Glenn running with the idiot ball again.

1. The pandemic was officially declared on 3/11/20. Most of the U.S. went into a lockdown soon after that lasted until June at the earliest.

2. The official death toll reached 100 000 around 5/25/20. So that means with roughly only seven months remaining in Trumps term, we were just starting to see considerably fatalities from Covid.

3. Biden was President for nearly all of 2021, a year which saw two of the largest Covid case/death spikes of the whole pandemic. It was also the year in which most Republican-led states said “fuck it” and eliminated all covid restrictions.

Simple math will tell you that in the end far more Covid deaths will occur under Biden than Trump because Biden will be a President during Covid way longer than Trump was.

Also, the deadliest of all the variants (Delta) occurred fully under Biden.

Where’d the documents go. Investigators know there were calls made, but who messed with the logs?

This reeks of criminal conspiracy, and again shows just how desperate Trumpworld was to commit crimes to cover up for still other crimes being committed. It was a nonstop crime spree.

The DOJ has to get off the pot and start issuing indictments, because right now there’s no sign that we’re ever going to hold any of these people accountable for felony conduct, which means they’ll be free to try again to end democracy. And yeah, I also know that the DC AUSA is only on the job for a few months, but there’s no higher priority than this. Start issuing indictments against Trump officials. The public record has more than enough to indict from Trump to Meadows to Rudy to Stone on down the line.

A naked man crept into an 80-year-old Chicago woman’s bed and held her hostage for 17 hours — but she was finally rescued after her daughter called the cops because the woman hadn’t texted her the day’s Wordle answers, WBBM-TV reported.

Denyse Holt was asleep on Saturday when the mentally ill man broke into her home in the Windy City’s Lincolnwood neighborhood, according to the outlet.

The intruder — identified as 32-year-old James H. Davis III, who was reportedly bloodied from a broken window — slipped into Holt’s bed while clutching a pair of scissors, the station said.

“Fascinating, Glenn. I’m assuming that, therefore, all of the Covid deaths in Brazil are due to you being there?”

Ah, so this guy is involved in the Coutts, Alberta border crossing issue. He calls himself a minister, but it looks like he’s been involved in anti-COVID mitigation protests and now this.

Although the situation is ever-changing, as the bail hearing took place Wednesday afternoon, traffic in both directions was impeded as protesters continue to demand an end to vaccine mandates for cross-border truckers, as well as the lifting of other pandemic-related public health restrictions.

Just going to point out EVEN IF Canada were to end the mandate for cross border truckers to be vaccinated, the US and Mexico are still requiring it. So it’s a huge steaming pile of horse puckey.

That said, this would be amusing as hell, white dude bit in the azz by legislation intending to shut down Indigenous protests.

The RCMP has not yet responded to a request for information on whether Pawlowski is the first person to be charged under the Critical Infrastructure Defence Act in connection with the Coutts protests.

The new legislation is controversial and has been criticized as unfairly targeting Indigenous people.

The legislation was introduced in Alberta in 2020 against the backdrop of protests involving the blockade of rail lines, commuter train routes and roadways in solidarity with Wet’suwet’en hereditary chiefs’ opposition to the construction of the Coastal Gas Link pipeline through their northern B.C. territory.

Race relations in the USA were probably the last thing on Tolkein’s mind when he was writing his epics, which are in fact based on Northern European mythology.

The trend in British TV and film production, though has been to have the casts reflect the current racial makeup of the UK, heck there were even black and Indian characters working in the 1938 British Foreign Office in the recent Munich: The Edge of War, which is historically way off the mark.

And don’t even get me started on Bridgerton, for Chrissakes, it is all historical fantasy.

I’m surprised they kept logs at all in Trump’s White House. They can get that information from the telephone company, though. All calls, times, and numbers are there if they want them.

You can probably also bet that the NSA or some security group also logs those lines, and probably any electronic emissions from the White House and other secure federal buildings. White House probably has it’s own “cell tower”.

In 1980, I was driving my mom’s car with my mom and youngest brother as passengers. We were in Montana, and decided to make it an international trip by going to Canada for an afternoon. The plate on the car was from California, so I was unimpressed by the border guard’s first question.

BG: Where you from?

From Wiki:

The term “Black Irish” is sometimes used outside Ireland to refer to Irish people with black hair and dark eyes. One theory is that they are descendants of Spanish traders or of the few sailors of the Spanish Armada who were shipwrecked on Ireland’s west coast, but there is little evidence for this.

Also, there was a Roman-era grave excavated a few years back, and its occupant (a woman of some means, buried with quality jewelry) genetically tested out as Black (I.e sub-Saharan African). It’s theorized she was the wife of some Roman official posted to Britannia from North Africa. Though despite the occasional inmixture, “England” has always been pretty “white”. - no surprise given the climate….

Opinion: A Trump adviser’s angry eruption over Jan. 6 bodes badly for democracy
Greg Sargent
washingtonpost.com

One of Trump’s leading Jan. 6 co-conspirators — former adviser Peter Navarro — just doubled down on this notion. He’s not alone: The persistence of this among some top Trumpists — and the refusal of others to unequivocally side with Pence — bodes badly, as Trump’s movement adopts the idea that the only thing wrong with his coup scheme was that it failed.
Navarro’s restatement of the Pence-as-betrayer myth comes in response to a subpoena he received from the House select committee examining Jan. 6. The committee is examining Navarro’s role as a key orchestrator of the effort to get Biden’s electors invalidated in Congress.
Here’s how Navarro responded, in an angry email to the New York Times:
“Pence betrayed Trump. Marc Short is a Koch Network dog. Meadows is a fool and a coward. Cheney and Kinzinger are useful idiots for Nancy Pelosi and the woke Left,” Mr. Navarro wrote in an email.
To Navarro, Pence wasn’t the only traitor: Top White House advisers Mark Meadows and Marc Short have cooperated in a limited way with the Jan. 6 committee. The perfidy of Reps. Liz Cheney (R-Wyo.) and Adam Kinzinger (R-Ill.), both committee members, goes without saying.
It might be easy to dismiss Navarro’s eruption as bluster. Instead, let’s take this seriously: It’s very bad that even as we learn extraordinary new details about the scope and intent of Trump’s plot to overturn our political order, some of his top lieutenants are expressly adopting the stance that the main transgression here was Pence’s failure to carry it to fruition.
