And let’s further assume that the US intel is off and it’s 30% that have run out of fuel/food, not 70%.

30,000 troops out of a 100,000 troop contingent are now sidelined, captured, or starving in the land they just invaded days ago. This doesn’t end well for them, or the Russian military. It’s not just the men who get captured. It’s the equipment too. Russia’s military doesn’t have easy resupply either. They can’t just order up new tanks either. Or deliver them to the battlefield. The strategic goals aren’t being met, Russia’s military is vastly underperforming as compared to expectations from prior conflicts, and this bodes badly for Putin and well for Ukraine at this point in time.

How many business operations are centered around the latter, as opposed to the former? I mean, even in America, you look at the top 500 American-based companies, and maybe 25 of them don’t have some critical business system that does something with Oracle, one of its subsidiaries, or SAP. Legacy systems are very slow to get retired; far too slow, in my opinion, though I understand why.

Ms. Freeland, who’s also the Canadian Deputy Minister of Finance, came up with separating Russia from it’s “rainy day fund”.

@cafreeland
came up with the idea of cutting off Russia’s Central Bank and their rainy day fund that was intended to be used as an economic buffer.

“She was the one who circulated the theory among prominent Central Bankers in the Western world and fought for it.” Marty Sheil (who’s himself a 30 year IRS criminal investigator)

“I don’t know if the timing of its activation was intentional or serendipitous, but it turned out to be sublime.

“Putin was caught with his pants down. The Russian stock market has been closed for the week.”-Marty Sheil

“Please note—it was only after this particular sanction maneuver was announced that Deripaska and Fridman and some other oligarchs started publicly squeaking.

“Chrystia Freeland is my new hero—after you of course.
But spread her name from the rooftops Heidi!”- Marty Sheil

Russian fighter jet has violated Swedish airspace
Four Russian fighter jets have violated Swedish airspace, the Swedish Armed Forces writes on its website.
The Air Force carried out an operation with Jas 39 Gripen from the incident preparedness and documented the incident, in the form of photography.
- This shows that our preparedness is good. We were on site to ensure territorial integrity and Sweden’s borders. We have full control of the situation, says Air Force Chief Carl-Johan Edström.
Two Russian SU 27s and two Russian SU 24s violated Swedish airspace. The violation was short-lived and took place east of Gotland, across the sea.
- In light of the current situation, we take the incident very seriously. It is an unprofessional and irresponsible action on the part of Russia, says the air force chief.

The whole thing reeked of a pump and dump scheme, and so far, it’s proving to be prescient. Trump has no interest in any of this, and couldn’t find social media if his life depended on it. I wonder if he found twitter by accident and stayed for the same reason. He’s pushing this new social media business, but hasn’t actually posted anything there. There’s zero reason to join if he’s not posting, and people are seeing the clusterfuck for what it is.

The next question becomes whether the SEC sees it as a scam/sham too and investigates.

Two air superiority fighters and two ground attack aircraft. Now, there is always the possibility that they were hopelessly lost, which is probably why Sweden didn’t just shoot them down (well, that and there’s probably a bit of, “do not fire until fired upon” since Sweden isn’t officially at war, yet). In ordinary times, this would be a simple matter where the Swedish air force would send up a couple of guys, escort the Russian fighters back out over the Baltic Sea, the Russian ambassador in Helsinki would get called on the carpet and read the Riot Act, and that’d be the end of it. But again, these are no ordinary times.

Anne Applebaum: “As it turns out, nations are not pieces in a game of Risk. They do not, as some academics have long imagined, have eternal interests or permanent geopolitical orientations, fixed motivations or predictable goals. Nor do human beings always react the way they are supposed to react. Last week, nobody who was analyzing the coming war in Ukraine imagined that the personal bravery of the Ukrainian president and his emotive calls for sovereignty and democracy could alter the calculations of foreign ministers, bank directors, business executives, and thousands of ordinary people. Few imagined that the Russian president’s sinister television appearances and brutal orders could alter, in just a few days, international perceptions of Russia.”

“And yet all of that has happened. Volodymyr Zelensky’s courage has moved people, even the hard-bitten CEOs of oil companies, even dull diplomats accustomed to rote pronouncements. Vladimir Putin’s paranoid ranting, meanwhile, has frightened even people who were lauding his ‘savvy’ just a few days ago. He is not, in fact, someone you can do business with, as so many in Berlin, Paris, London, and Washington falsely believed; he is a cold-blooded dictator happy to murder hundreds of thousands of neighbors and impoverish his nation, if that’s what it takes to remain in power. However the war ends—and many scenarios are still imaginable—we already live in a world with fewer illusions

What’s weird(est) is trump’s natural desire to be the most followed, most loved, et al, gave up. He could have been the top dog, now he’s just rolled over and is playing a dead dog.

That said, he could have bigger issues in his mind, like that all his finding is kaput and NY is still coming at him and the January 6th committee is on those save heels.

Cats Peek Out from Shirt Pockets in Hiroko Kubota’s Clever Embroideries
thisiscolossal.com

Cats are known to wedge themselves into tiny spots and generally treat people as human jungle gyms, and artist Hiroko Kubota (previously) translates that lack of spatial awareness into her tiny embroideries. Stitched onto collared shirts, the Nara-based artist’s portraits are cleverly placed to depict furry faces peering over the edge of a pocket and sometimes, attempting to climb out from their garment confines.

These are the cutest thing I have ever seen!

French pilots are actually quite good. As are Ukranian pilots, we’re now learning. The fact that Russia still doesn’t own the air is one of the biggest surprises of this war. We ensured we owned the skies over Iraq both times we invaded.

I haven’t seen a Russian sortie on the news flying over any of the Ukranian cities because Ukraine still has anti-aircraft capacity to fuck them hard…

NO BUYERS: Surgutneftegas, the Russian oil producer, ***fails for the 3rd consecutive time*** to sell Urals crude via its regular tender. I can not recall ever a situation like this: there are not buyers for Russia oil, even at record discounts | #OOTT #Ukraine #SelfSanctions

I Am Not A Petroleum Engineer, but what I understand is that many of the oil fields in Russia cannot be shut down without a high chance they can’t be started up again (because of water in the deposits or something). The Gulf doesn’t have this problem. So they will have to sell, at whatever price, maybe negative price, when their storage is full.

Playbook: “Finally, you could not have watched Biden’s speech without noticing an unusual number of verbal miscues. Sometimes, they happened when he had trouble reading his teleprompter. Other times, they came when he added something that wasn’t in his prepared remarks.”

“We’ve seen various explanations for this. It’s a staple of the Breitbart-Fox-MAGA media complex to suggest, without evidence, that the mistakes are a result of ‘cognitive decline.’ On the other hand, Atlantic writer John Hendrickson argues that some of Biden’s verbal bobbles are an artifact of his childhood stutter — an idea that Biden rejected in a 2020 interview with Hendrickson, but later, during a CNN town hall, suggested was a possibility ‘when I find myself really tired.’ Either way, there were some odd moments Tuesday night.”

Trump supporters claim that Putin didn’t invade Ukraine during his term in office because Putin feared Trump. Certainly there are many reasons that Putin may not have taken that step but is it possible that an invasion was planned and then COVID interfered. There have been many claims that both cases and deaths were at least 3 times has high as the official Russian reports. The military may have told Putin until the virus was under control there was too much uncertainty about their forces being sufficiently healthy to launch a successful attack.

yes, covid would have run rampant through troops in such close quarters.
it would have taken scads of them out of action and outright killed who knows how many.

also, putin was probably waiting till trump got re-elected and then withdrew from NATO, as he claimed/promised/threatened

“The Tribe of Dana” tells of a small tribe in Bretagne fending off an invasion, and a young tribesman going to war for the first time.

If there was an actual invasion, this song will play on all the stations all over France!

Technically an invasion of dignity or privacy of a PoW. If I had to, I’d post pictures, but with dog tag numbers etc. on a sheet of paper. And I’d very much prefer permission from the PoW.

However, since the US had advance intel that the Russians planned systematic war crimes and crimes against humanity, and that that intel has proven correct, these might not be PoW’s, but captured unlawful combattants.

According to Daily Mail, they went into a lot of detail mentioning it really is roughly 40 miles long. It’s probably not one convoy. It’s a number of them, with vehicles that have just run out of gas/food/people to move them. If a March storm blows in, they’re absolutely fucked nine ways to Sunday.

Yes, this “no taping!” thing is simply bullshit. PWs cannot be forced to read confessions or be put in humiliating positions on tape, things like that. Or marched through the streets being jeered at, like the DNR “separatists” did to Ukrainian PWs, for example. The goal of this rule is to make sure that soldiers know they will be fairly treated as PWs, so will surrender and reduce loss of life if their situation is hopeless. So, releasing footage of soldiers being treated humanely encourages that. There’s no privacy expectation, precisely the opposite: they must state their name/rank/serial number like in the movies, and that must be registered with the Red Cross to prevent them from “disappearing”.

Unlawful combatants, like spies and saboteurs who are not clearly and correctly uniformed, do not get Geneva Convention protections but shall be tried for those crimes under the laws of the country they are in.

You know what is against the Geneva Conventions? Pillage. Russian soldier vs. electronic store door: very funny! Now speculate why a soldier would want to get into a closed electronics store.

While these might be valid concerns, this isn’t the logic behind these conventions. The ICRC was far more worried about PWs being mistreated and “disappeared” by the detaining power then retaliation from the PW’s government for being taken alive. The PW’s government is going to find out when the PW is repatriated, as is the detaining power’s duty after cessation of hostilities, so they’re always going to know.

The PWs can be interrogated, but they cannot be coerced to provide any information. And if the detaining power wants to make the PW a spy and the PW agrees to it, I don’t think they’ll be too keen on taping him in the first place.

What I understand is that the United States had advance intel that the Russian Federation planned to systematically commit war crimes and crimes against humanity against the Ukrainians. They are literarly ordered to commit crimes.

Sad thing is that it seems they are trying their best to provoke Europe into war…

Makes me wonder if Putin or the military leaders think that drawing NATO/EU directly into the conflict will allow them to rally the Russian citizenry against the Nazi threat from the West against the Motherland.

If they are it’s a pretty callous calculation to try to recover a losing situation by getting even more people who don’t deserve to die killed.*

The clamor over “Russian oil” is so uninformed.

Petroleum and petroleum products are traded all over the world.

One can check the EIA website and see the historical data set for imports from Russia.

The imports are mostly products, not crude.

And these products are traded, imported, re-exported, re-imported, all over the world.

So all the right wing whiners about how Biden won’t stop the importation of Russian oil are just wrong.

First off, transportation of such goods can have long lead times.

Secondly, products can be blended.

So some nation, say India, could import Russian crude, export some product, said product ends up in Indonesia, gets blended into something else, then exported to the US.

What Biden did is exactly what needed to be done: stop the flow of money.

The US is, on the whole, not as big of a net importer of petroleum and petroleum products as some may think.

We do import millions of barrels per day. We also export millions of barrels.

The net import into the US has been averaging around 1.5 million barrels per day in recent times.

That changes depending upon the US economy, the world economy, etc.

Sounds like what I heard about Jeff Bezos’ new mega sailing yacht (the one they need to take the bridge down for in Rotterdam): the sails are so large they would block the approach of a helicopter, so it’s planned to be accompanied by its own “dinghy”. Only said dinghy is another yacht - large enough to accommodate a helipad…

* - Not quite what you think. Was essentially a single building with a kitchen, bathroom, and common room. And it supported a set of docks for a group of boats (generally 20’ and under mix of sail and motor boats) for middle class people who did not live directly on the lake/river. (Section of the St Lawrence River that was wider than normal due to being dammed not too far east of the location as part of the development done in the 1950s.) Boats were there in the summer and then pulled out before winter set in since the river froze solid and fairly thick. From a former Naval Intelligence Warrant Officer:

[Embedded content]

Possible Explanations
There are several factors that may be contributing to the lack of Russian ability to achieve and exploit air superiority, in spite of their huge advantages in aircraft numbers, equipment capability and enablers such as AWACS compared to the UkrAF. The first is the limited quantities of air-delivered precision-guided munitions (PGMs) available to most VKS fighter units. During combat operations over Syria, only the Su-34 fleet has regularly made use of PGMs, and even these specialist strike aircraft have regularly resorted to unguided bomb and rocket attacks. This not only indicates a very limited familiarity with PGMs among most Russian fighter crews, but also reinforces the widely accepted theory that the Russian air-delivered PGM stockpile is very limited. Years of combat operations in Syria will have further depleted that stockpile, and may mean that the bulk of the 300 VKS fixed wing combat aircraft massed around Ukraine have only unguided bombs and rockets to draw on for ground-attack sorties. This, combined with the lack of targeting pods to spot and identify battlefield targets from a safe distance, means that the VKS fixed wing pilots’ capacity to provide close air support for their forces is limited.

re: #292 darthstar

Quite aside from any intent, or lack thereof, to commit war crimes, the lack of guided munitions and an apparent lack of strategic-level target acquisition means that the Russian army’s best strategy is effectively “spray and pray”, but with bombs and rockets. This would do plenty to explain the apparent attacks on civilians, even absent any declaration of intent to commit war crimes.

The day before the primary, the conservative outlet Breitbart News posted a story that Taylor had had a monthslong affair with a Plano woman, Tania Joya, who he had paid $5,000 to keep quiet. The publication reported that she provided it a phone screen shot purporting to be communications with Taylor and a bank record showing that she deposited $5,000 into her account. The Texas Tribune has not been able to independently verify the report.

Taylor is married with three children.

Joya is known as a former jihadist who was once married to a commander for the Islamic State. Tabloids have referred to her as “ISIS bride.”/blockquote>

re: #168 ericblair

Well, yes they can. It happen(s)(ed) all the time. US pilots at the Hanoi Hilton were taped while being forced to make confessions. They also opened and closed their eyes to Morse Code tapping out “Torture”.
